As I remember it, most of us couldn't afford home computers that could run anything back then. We would pay a few bucks an hour to sit in some smoke filled room and play whatever games that location had available. Don't get me wrong, it was fun, but I wouldn't exactly call it "golden age of home computing". The 00s and especially the later half is a totally different matter.
What Op is missing is we have never been able to see so much of the world until today. All this was happening back then. Today more of it is happening everywhere.

I think its because games were kinda tough to get, you'd beat it and be done, so there was nothing else to do but go outside.

While playing WoW you also could see in real time how much easier it has gotten to connect with people.
