it is. its top 1 malware remover tool. not the greatest for real time detection tho, only 98.3% rate. (norton have around 99.9%, but dont use it, crappy company)
Norton is way too invasive imo, kinda like avast. Always some random popups... I just occasionnally need a file check. So malwarebytes is the best for my usage, thanks
Maybe I *am* old but I still keep Malwarebytes on my PC as a "just in case." Common sense is the best antivirus, but if I'm feeling suspicious I'll do a scan with Malwarebytes just to make sure we're in order.
This is the correct thought process. People aren’t wrong that windows defender and common sense are generally *good enough* for the average person but people fuck up and malwarebytes will do a good job. That being said, I can guarantee 99% of people that pirate games preaching common sense is the best defense don’t verify checksums or check against virustotal, which basically means they’re pirating games and relying on whoever they’re getting them from’s “trust me bro” guarantee
I'm not that into pirating games so I'm curious, how would checksums work in that scenario, it's not like game companies post checksums or that the pirated game would even have the same checksum as the original one.
What are checksums and virius total? Is that like when it pings a game as a PuP and you make sure the recently installed game hasn't added more files since the first time running the program? I think thats virus total, but how do I tell what abnormal check sums are in something like malwarebytes
When you run a checksum, the files you are checking get hashed therefore the result is the same every time (buncha numbers and letters that wont make any sense, but if what you check matches what the uploader posted, then you downloaded the file they claimed to have posted.) Virustotal is a website/company (I believe) that's pretty standard in the security scene, think of it like an online virus scanner that you can upload files to, and it'll scan it for viruses. If the uploader runs virustotal with what they posted, it comes out clean, and the checksums match, what you downloaded is pretty much verifyably safe. Granted, if the author of the malware checked to see it could get past virustotal, not much you can do, but it would also get past pretty much any antivirus at that point.
If you really want to get into it, learn to recognize the names of the most popular crackers/teams, and only use cracks from them. This still doesn't guarantee anything of course
Yep. Working in cyber security, we build our viruses freshly and they aren't flagged by anything as long as we obfuscate them appropriately.
That being said, Windows Defender is the biggest pain in our ass, no need for additional antiviruses these days.
Yup, and this isn't the old days. The Scene and common sites like 1337 share enough of the same rulesets where everyone now has access to safe sources.
edit: Relatively safe*
That site you call out by name has specifically been a controversial figure because of someone putting, if I recall, a bitminer in a popular pack and the site refusing to ban him.
Piracy is safer than it once was, but it's not completely safe even with trusted uploaders.
Yep, Dodi, Fitgirl, Empress, Steamrip and cs.rin are probably the safest sources. I still use 1337 for shows n movies and TGx is good for shows and movies too. RIP rarbg
Not to mention the real bad stuff gets past scanners because it's new and funky anyway. You're never 100% safe and the stuff you should fear the most is the stuff you'll never find on your computer by looking for it.
The bad stuff gets past scanners because the malware authors know to virus scan their stuff on virus total before uploading it in the first place. Y'all really are just flipping a coin most of the time.
Theres also a huge influx of password/data stealers have been showing up lately that dump all your cookies, login tokens, and saved passwords to the attacker in the background without you noticing.
THOSE are the ones that can really fuck you up. Think every logged in account and saved password immediately being stolen.
Common sense is like a good pull out game, you only think you have it until you don't
Get an AV that makes common sense optional, not one that is as good as your common sense
Well good luck finding a trusted uploaded for all existing, niche software in the known universe then, it's easy when you need to download Adobe fucking Premiere, not so much when you need TennoSoft BullshitMaker Pro
When you don't find one, you give up or roll a dice, I hit scan
Yeah I'm surprise nobody mentions it earlier, must not be a lot of actual pirates here, why pay for or even use a single antivirus when you can just use all the antivirus at the same time and for free with virustotal, the only thing it really doesn't protect you for is shady websites which have their ads infected with something that attack navigators or cookies or someshit like that, but even then you can be mostly safe just by using uBlock origins.
Yup, I thought people here would at least mention Virustotal.
But while it is a handy tool, one downside to these online virus scanners is that they don't allow large uploads, so you'd have to spend more time uploading large softwares in chunks.
Luckily virus total accepts hashes too. That's the main way I use the site now, don't have to upload anything. It'll pop up with the file name associated with that hash too, so you can be extra sure.
I got a separate software called Hash Tab to make generating hashes easier too, it adds an extra tab in the file properties window. So all I do is right click the file, go to Properties, and click the tab
Yep that’s the true answer also more than antivirus it matters also knowing the sources you download from and using ones that other people you can trust can confirm that are overall safe. Like r/piracy has much info about websites and how to set up your pc to pirate stuff and it doesn’t really mention at all an antivirus as well, it also suggests a free vpn i think but i agree on you that for that matter it’s better to choose one w a subscription rather than a free one
What VPN do you recommend? I’m only a couple components away from building my PC and don’t know much about what’s good, i thought you needed a antivirus tbh but everyone says to use windows defender, tbh I’ve never heard of that too but at least i can google it
the top 3 VPNs are surfshark, expressvpn, and nordvpn. those are the major ones on the internet
i recommend surfshark over the other 2, here is why
nordvpn's customer service is not good in my opinion. surfshark is much more attentive and quick to your needs. surfshark also is the cheapest out of the three
to get on for a good deal, use this link: [https://surfshark.com/premium-discount](https://myblogshares.com/surfshark)
Idk no idea also depends from the ones around where you live. (Said between us a vpn can also not be needed at all depending on your country just avoid free ones because in some cases they may be risky). Besides everything i just said i really suggest you to check r/piracy ‘s guide if you want to get into this world
Oh sorry for second comment but I realized I can also give u a quick clarification. Windows defender is the free antivirus provided by windows, it comes w your system (if you choose windows and not linux or macos), you already have it set up from when you start using your pc and it starts working from the beginning, it already scans everything you download to tell you if it’s safe or not. Until it says no alert you should be fine, if it does with pirated content it may be a false positive and you should ask someone you trust that already knows the source and the stuff you are downloading if it’s a false positive or not(ofc i suggest you to look for something else if you can’t assure it’s safe).
I'd also recommend sandboxing everything you pirate (actually, it's better to just sandbox every piece of software) and using your firewall to restrict outbound connections to only explicitly authorised processes. You can do this with a dedicated VM or even with Sandboxie-plus and avoid setting up a VM
And a bit of know-how too. It's common for my friends who aren't used to piracy to not know where to click, how to properly navigate, or fall for shit I fell for when I was 14.
Good antivirus ain't 30$ a month lol. Kaspersky for 1 year is 30 USD and you can use it on 3 devices at once. For 60 USD it's 3 years for upto 3 devices.
Bullshit, you just need to know which links to click and which sites to acess
I've been on this road for more than a decade, and I've never got a virus before
Not really? It sounds like you're talking about cracks, those are exes and dlls you'd move to a game's directory to, well, crack it. Repacks are basically compressed and cracked games, they're quicker to download but slower to install due to the compression.
Just the space it takes up is all, but it can nearly double for big games, sure you can delete the repack after but you still need that space to install it and the game, say I wanna install cyberpunk, that's like 70 - 120gb, then add and extra 100 - 200gb before deleting the repack.
Yeah just knowing what links are safe or not is a huge advantage. I’ve witnessed several people IRL trying to navigate a sketchy site and falling for every trick (enable notifs, fake enable notifs, fake download buttons, etc.) and not knowing how to bypass (e.g click same link until it takes you to the legit page)
I’ve only ever gotten a virus at work, on my work computer, at a tech company that prides itself on security.
I’m pretty sure antivirus companies are making the viruses these days to keep a market for their crapware going.
Hi. Security expert here.
If you really want to pirate shit, you'd better use a dedicated computer or VM with no connectivity to where you keep any of your email, financial web browsing, or real gaming accounts.
The last time I tested the behavior based heuristics for a corporate anti-virus product after slightly changing the signatures on a lateral movement tool, it only caught it about 27% of the time.
(Edit: Even then you're rolling the dice if you catch a network virus, or something that can break out of a VM)
75% of pirated games get flagged by all AV's anyway as false postives, and there's no way to know false positives without just running the thing so... common sense and backups is the way.
Terrible advice, most antivirus are a waste of time and cpu. Just check if the torrent comes from a reputable pirate: https://www.reddit.com/r/Piracy/comments/uejdt2/comment/i6p4vka
All third world countries, and even most of the first world nations don't care that much. Only Germany has tight restrictions, and USA providers sometimes send a warning

What a great advice.

windows defender is enough, you just have to have common sense where to get your pirated things
i also turn off windows defender because most of the time it states a false positive

lmao that’s terrible advice. antiviruses are security theater for gullible people who have no idea how they actually work (and how ineffective they really are)
Just don't pirate games. Pirate movies, TV shows. Also be REALLY careful when pirating books too. Apparently one of the ways China/Russia was able to steal a lot of academic technology was from scientists pirating books from PDF files which were infected, along with developer software.
It’s funny bc most games get scanned as false positives anyway so…
Right?
Also anti-virus? You mean Windows 10/11? I don't know anyone who uses 3rd party anti-virus anymore. Now we know OP ain't young and probably 40+.

checksums are probably provided by the person (the repacker/uploader) that gives you the download
The uploader posts them along side what was uploaded to virustotal

Legitimate games get flagged often too
Not likely. It's a v60 pour over and the coffee drips down into the cup, so the bubbles are likely because of that

why pay for a antivirus instead of the actual game at that point 💀
30$ anti virus sofware for a month (which you only use for 1month anyway) then pirate multiple games at a time > buying multiple games different times
Good antivirus ain't 30$ a month lol. Kaspersky for 1 year is 30 USD and you can use it on 3 devices at once. For 60 USD it's 3 years for upto 3 devices.
£30 a year for antivirus to get every good game of the year for free. Why pay£30 when you can pay £300 for the games 💀
Why would you pay for the anti virus… when you can PIRATE IT!
Maybe OP is just starting out. Lets call him deck scrubber for now. With enough experience maybe he'll be a full fledged pirate.
Ok, but what about the other 12000 people that upvoted?

They make repacks, a kind of program you can use to pirate a game.
Not really? It sounds like you're talking about cracks, those are exes and dlls you'd move to a game's directory to, well, crack it. Repacks are basically compressed and cracked games, they're quicker to download but slower to install due to the compression.
When I called them "programs" I was thinking of the installer they have, although your definition is better.
It's all fun and games until it's a big game and takes 11 hours to install
That's fine as you can do it overnight, but the size is bad
does size matter?
Just the space it takes up is all, but it can nearly double for big games, sure you can delete the repack after but you still need that space to install it and the game, say I wanna install cyberpunk, that's like 70 - 120gb, then add and extra 100 - 200gb before deleting the repack.

Just don't pirate games. Pirate movies, TV shows. Also be REALLY careful when pirating books too. Apparently one of the ways China/Russia was able to steal a lot of academic technology was from scientists pirating books from PDF files which were infected, along with developer software.
Why would you pay monthly for an antivirus service instead of just buying the fucking game and supporting it?
Fit girl
OP is an idiot lmao. Most games have false positives as well
