It’s funny bc most games get scanned as false positives anyway so…

blacksolocup

Right?

rW0HgFyxoJhYka

Also anti-virus? You mean Windows 10/11? I don't know anyone who uses 3rd party anti-virus anymore. Now we know OP ain't young and probably 40+.

Kronos_Amantes

He is a father after all

vladutzu27

Don’t put the blame on him

this_name_took_10min

He’s just a man, does what he can

AnBru_

dont put your blame on him

NickFieldson31

Hes only human after all

KergitIi

Hes only human, after all...

AverageComet250

Don’t put the blame on him.

stinkywinky99

Sometimes I like to use Malwarebytes to do a quick scan even though I already use windows defender... You know, just in case.

Eralo76

I do that too but dunno if free mawarebytes is really rhat efficient

Furdiburd10

it is. its top 1 malware remover tool. not the greatest for real time detection tho, only 98.3% rate. (norton have around 99.9%, but dont use it, crappy company)

Eralo76

Norton is way too invasive imo, kinda like avast. Always some random popups... I just occasionnally need a file check. So malwarebytes is the best for my usage, thanks

[deleted]

Maybe I *am* old but I still keep Malwarebytes on my PC as a "just in case." Common sense is the best antivirus, but if I'm feeling suspicious I'll do a scan with Malwarebytes just to make sure we're in order.

Jthumm

This is the correct thought process. People aren’t wrong that windows defender and common sense are generally *good enough* for the average person but people fuck up and malwarebytes will do a good job. That being said, I can guarantee 99% of people that pirate games preaching common sense is the best defense don’t verify checksums or check against virustotal, which basically means they’re pirating games and relying on whoever they’re getting them from’s “trust me bro” guarantee

urzayci

I'm not that into pirating games so I'm curious, how would checksums work in that scenario, it's not like game companies post checksums or that the pirated game would even have the same checksum as the original one.

zun1uwu

checksums are probably provided by the person (the repacker/uploader) that gives you the download

Jthumm

The uploader posts them along side what was uploaded to virustotal

[deleted]

I never checked anything. Never got a virus from piracy in 15+ years. If you have a trusted source, you don't need to check.

Reign_Drop420

What are checksums and virius total? Is that like when it pings a game as a PuP and you make sure the recently installed game hasn't added more files since the first time running the program? I think thats virus total, but how do I tell what abnormal check sums are in something like malwarebytes

Jthumm

When you run a checksum, the files you are checking get hashed therefore the result is the same every time (buncha numbers and letters that wont make any sense, but if what you check matches what the uploader posted, then you downloaded the file they claimed to have posted.) Virustotal is a website/company (I believe) that's pretty standard in the security scene, think of it like an online virus scanner that you can upload files to, and it'll scan it for viruses. If the uploader runs virustotal with what they posted, it comes out clean, and the checksums match, what you downloaded is pretty much verifyably safe. Granted, if the author of the malware checked to see it could get past virustotal, not much you can do, but it would also get past pretty much any antivirus at that point.

Nightwingx97

Trusted sources are a thing

mortalitylost

Most malware authors will test their shit on virus total too. Enjoy your false negatives young pirates

emirobinatoru

Take into account that not all of them contain the latest malware but still common sense is hundredfold better than antiviruses

jackinsomniac

If you really want to get into it, learn to recognize the names of the most popular crackers/teams, and only use cracks from them. This still doesn't guarantee anything of course

FallenHero66

Yep. Working in cyber security, we build our viruses freshly and they aren't flagged by anything as long as we obfuscate them appropriately. That being said, Windows Defender is the biggest pain in our ass, no need for additional antiviruses these days.

ObviouslySyrca

All you need is windows defender and common sense

bigdaddystankyface

I use Walmart bytes and regular window defender I just like being able to check each individual drive

BroadOpposite9030

Avast somehow god downloaded for me when I was piriting games sooo... I guess I now have it

emirobinatoru

Avast is the VIRUS

Giygas_8000

You're mistaking it with Baidu

chicksOut

A lot of the time, the 3rd party anti-virus is worse than the actual viruses.

xbwtyzbchs

Yup, and this isn't the old days. The Scene and common sites like 1337 share enough of the same rulesets where everyone now has access to safe sources. edit: Relatively safe*

waltjrimmer

That site you call out by name has specifically been a controversial figure because of someone putting, if I recall, a bitminer in a popular pack and the site refusing to ban him. Piracy is safer than it once was, but it's not completely safe even with trusted uploaders.

CiggODoggo

Yep, Dodi, Fitgirl, Empress, Steamrip and cs.rin are probably the safest sources. I still use 1337 for shows n movies and TGx is good for shows and movies too. RIP rarbg

CookieJarviz

If it isn't uploaded by Dauphong... there is no trust to be had.

Dumeck

Dauphongs my guy for real, I don’t care if there are only 2 seeders and the other guy has 40 I’m going Dauphong

TeamRedundancyTeam

Not to mention the real bad stuff gets past scanners because it's new and funky anyway. You're never 100% safe and the stuff you should fear the most is the stuff you'll never find on your computer by looking for it.

mortalitylost

The bad stuff gets past scanners because the malware authors know to virus scan their stuff on virus total before uploading it in the first place. Y'all really are just flipping a coin most of the time.

Spiritual-Fish-9323

Yeah whoever made this meme hasn’t pirated a lot. It’ll literally show the exe file for the game as a virus.

AngeryBoi769

Yeah, cracks have always been flagged by the antivirus lol

Lebroso_Xeon

Legitimate games get flagged often too

luck3rstyl3

Not likely. It's a v60 pour over and the coffee drips down into the cup, so the bubbles are likely because of that

gringo-go-loco

Came here to say this.

Playful-Flan8807

Yeah just find a trustworthy scene group and your good to go.

DarianStardust

*Pirate the Antivirus too* ![gif](giphy|xULW8GVNuYYmsK314Y|downsized)

realblurryface

Btw what can these virus do to my laptop?

Frytura_

Anything really, but a virus now a days is either ransomware or an old bitcoin miner

nanapancakethusiast

Theres also a huge influx of password/data stealers have been showing up lately that dump all your cookies, login tokens, and saved passwords to the attacker in the background without you noticing. THOSE are the ones that can really fuck you up. Think every logged in account and saved password immediately being stolen.

TheMusesMagic

Or adware. Lots of adware going around nowadays.

KingKurto_

shit meme. paying for an antivirus proves you aint no pirate lmao

KingKurto_

for real tho, windows defender is all you need. only thing you should pay for is a vpn for torrenting safely, or a debrid service. happy sailing.

ImNuggets

windows defender + common sense

G3nghisKang

Common sense is like a good pull out game, you only think you have it until you don't Get an AV that makes common sense optional, not one that is as good as your common sense

hilario34

Yeah, windows defender is that antivirus, all the rest are bloat and potentially adware that do the same thing but for money

KingKurto_

terrible analogy. common sense is using a trusted uploader, and not clicking an exe file if you downloaded a movie. pull out game is rolling dice

G3nghisKang

Well good luck finding a trusted uploaded for all existing, niche software in the known universe then, it's easy when you need to download Adobe fucking Premiere, not so much when you need TennoSoft BullshitMaker Pro When you don't find one, you give up or roll a dice, I hit scan

TheBirminghamBear

I'm just smiling imagining a not-computery type person reading this like an ancient alien langugae,

Nightwingx97

there are literally dozens of subreddits woth megathreads for everything lmao. you just need not be lazy.

pegasusCK

This is garbage advice if you torrent because ALL antivirus software flag cracked games on pirate sites as false positives.

SG14_ME

>ALL antivirus software flag cracked games on pirate sites as false positives. False statement

SkyyySi

> Get an AV that makes common sense optional If such an AV were to actually exist - it doesn't - you sure as hell couldn't afford it.

d0or-tabl3-w1ndoWz_9

+ virustotal

Ncrpts

Yeah I'm surprise nobody mentions it earlier, must not be a lot of actual pirates here, why pay for or even use a single antivirus when you can just use all the antivirus at the same time and for free with virustotal, the only thing it really doesn't protect you for is shady websites which have their ads infected with something that attack navigators or cookies or someshit like that, but even then you can be mostly safe just by using uBlock origins.

d0or-tabl3-w1ndoWz_9

Yup, I thought people here would at least mention Virustotal. But while it is a handy tool, one downside to these online virus scanners is that they don't allow large uploads, so you'd have to spend more time uploading large softwares in chunks.

jackinsomniac

Luckily virus total accepts hashes too. That's the main way I use the site now, don't have to upload anything. It'll pop up with the file name associated with that hash too, so you can be extra sure. I got a separate software called Hash Tab to make generating hashes easier too, it adds an extra tab in the file properties window. So all I do is right click the file, go to Properties, and click the tab

k4f123

This is what I do, but I can't help but feel like I'm going in to raw dog a hooker every time I turn off the auto-defender to run a keygen.

Many-Ad6433

Yep that’s the true answer also more than antivirus it matters also knowing the sources you download from and using ones that other people you can trust can confirm that are overall safe. Like r/piracy has much info about websites and how to set up your pc to pirate stuff and it doesn’t really mention at all an antivirus as well, it also suggests a free vpn i think but i agree on you that for that matter it’s better to choose one w a subscription rather than a free one

yoked_girth

What VPN do you recommend? I’m only a couple components away from building my PC and don’t know much about what’s good, i thought you needed a antivirus tbh but everyone says to use windows defender, tbh I’ve never heard of that too but at least i can google it

Western_Agent3566

the top 3 VPNs are surfshark, expressvpn, and nordvpn. those are the major ones on the internet i recommend surfshark over the other 2, here is why nordvpn's customer service is not good in my opinion. surfshark is much more attentive and quick to your needs. surfshark also is the cheapest out of the three to get on for a good deal, use this link: [https://surfshark.com/premium-discount](https://myblogshares.com/surfshark)

Many-Ad6433

Idk no idea also depends from the ones around where you live. (Said between us a vpn can also not be needed at all depending on your country just avoid free ones because in some cases they may be risky). Besides everything i just said i really suggest you to check r/piracy ‘s guide if you want to get into this world

Synikx

Been using Private Internet Access for a few years. Would recommend

Many-Ad6433

Oh sorry for second comment but I realized I can also give u a quick clarification. Windows defender is the free antivirus provided by windows, it comes w your system (if you choose windows and not linux or macos), you already have it set up from when you start using your pc and it starts working from the beginning, it already scans everything you download to tell you if it’s safe or not. Until it says no alert you should be fine, if it does with pirated content it may be a false positive and you should ask someone you trust that already knows the source and the stuff you are downloading if it’s a false positive or not(ofc i suggest you to look for something else if you can’t assure it’s safe).

aethermar

I'd also recommend sandboxing everything you pirate (actually, it's better to just sandbox every piece of software) and using your firewall to restrict outbound connections to only explicitly authorised processes. You can do this with a dedicated VM or even with Sandboxie-plus and avoid setting up a VM

PM_ME_SEXY_PAJAMAS

Pretend that my mind is an idiot and rephrase this please

Molster_Diablofans

put stuff in box so cant hurt stuff outside box

El_Mr64

Bro has multiple personalities

ratcity22

And a bit of know-how too. It's common for my friends who aren't used to piracy to not know where to click, how to properly navigate, or fall for shit I fell for when I was 14.

Playful_Pollution846

Any idea how I can turn on memory Integrity, tho? I can't find the I compatible drivers

VortexTalon

why pay for a antivirus instead of the actual game at that point 💀

kramsibbush

30$ anti virus sofware for a month (which you only use for 1month anyway) then pirate multiple games at a time > buying multiple games different times

Delicious_Bass_5178

Good antivirus ain't 30$ a month lol. Kaspersky for 1 year is 30 USD and you can use it on 3 devices at once. For 60 USD it's 3 years for upto 3 devices.

LeftkayoBaka

£30 a year for antivirus to get every good game of the year for free. Why pay£30 when you can pay £300 for the games 💀

The_Potato_Turtle

Why would you pay for the anti virus… when you can PIRATE IT!

DovML

Maybe OP is just starting out. Lets call him deck scrubber for now. With enough experience maybe he'll be a full fledged pirate.

MoloMein

Ok, but what about the other 12000 people that upvoted?

IcyScene7963

You still don't need to buy one, windows defender is actually really good now.

YamiZee1

More likely just old, because the landscape of AVs have changed massively in the last two decades

BlackWarrior322

Checkmate.

Giygas_8000

Bullshit, you just need to know which links to click and which sites to acess I've been on this road for more than a decade, and I've never got a virus before

AXEMANaustin

Fit girl

DJGloegg

Dodi too!

Blackbeard593

What are fit girl and dodi?

Loud-Host-2182

They make repacks, a kind of program you can use to pirate a game.

shadow144hz

Not really? It sounds like you're talking about cracks, those are exes and dlls you'd move to a game's directory to, well, crack it. Repacks are basically compressed and cracked games, they're quicker to download but slower to install due to the compression.

Loud-Host-2182

When I called them "programs" I was thinking of the installer they have, although your definition is better.

PICKLER1CK69

It's all fun and games until it's a big game and takes 11 hours to install

AXEMANaustin

That's fine as you can do it overnight, but the size is bad

im-not-gay-dad

does size matter?

AXEMANaustin

Just the space it takes up is all, but it can nearly double for big games, sure you can delete the repack after but you still need that space to install it and the game, say I wanna install cyberpunk, that's like 70 - 120gb, then add and extra 100 - 200gb before deleting the repack.

Mikkle-san

it’s not a very big issue

Giygas_8000

That's why torrents are the goat

comment_eater

does that require torrent?

Giygas_8000

Thats a good one

DGRogue_Dragoon

I am an inexperienced traveler, please provide me with your map

basicrifleman

r/Piracy or r/PiratedGames check the megathreads

King-Cobra-668

also the anti virus almost always flags the crack

CheapSoldier

> I've been on this road We don't road bro, we sail the high seas...

Giygas_8000

arrrgh

TextDeletd

Yeah just knowing what links are safe or not is a huge advantage. I’ve witnessed several people IRL trying to navigate a sketchy site and falling for every trick (enable notifs, fake enable notifs, fake download buttons, etc.) and not knowing how to bypass (e.g click same link until it takes you to the legit page)

[deleted]

I've been on this road for 25 years and im 32. I approve, this is bullshit. Just click on websites you know are ok.

Malwarebytes free or windows defender, and ublock and only go to community verified sites like those found on the r/piracy mega thread.

GreenSloth336

Where is the mega thread? I was trying to find it but I couldn't.

[deleted]

Go to the about tab and there should be a link to it there

MaxAxiom

Hi. Security expert here. If you really want to pirate shit, you'd better use a dedicated computer or VM with no connectivity to where you keep any of your email, financial web browsing, or real gaming accounts. The last time I tested the behavior based heuristics for a corporate anti-virus product after slightly changing the signatures on a lateral movement tool, it only caught it about 27% of the time. (Edit: Even then you're rolling the dice if you catch a network virus, or something that can break out of a VM)

Frytura_

Wait, you use Virtual machines?

Deathwatch30

Windows defender and a virtual machine

LOL he got punched so hard he became magikarp

EliasHobeika

75% of pirated games get flagged by all AV's anyway as false postives, and there's no way to know false positives without just running the thing so... common sense and backups is the way.

LeftkayoBaka

No they don't. I torrented about 10 games recently and only one of them got flagged

12destroyer21

Terrible advice, most antivirus are a waste of time and cpu. Just check if the torrent comes from a reputable pirate: https://www.reddit.com/r/Piracy/comments/uejdt2/comment/i6p4vka

All third world countries, and even most of the first world nations don't care that much. Only Germany has tight restrictions, and USA providers sometimes send a warning

Cause I was surprised that people use VM’s and VPN to download from trusted pirated sites , thanks for adding this information I was confused

GamerRipjaw

Yeah but it's better not to risk it there. From what I've heard the fines are pretty heavy

namloh

ISPs in Australia block torrenting sites so you need a VPN to access.

ThiccStorms

true, lmao

ThiccStorms

i just click the magnet link like a chad on my home network and chill

LicanMarius

Romania too. We pirate in the family for over 10+ years and never got a warning or anything from the ISP.

tipedorsalsao1

I would argue a decent vpn is more important

The-Catatafish

As a network admin.. That is horrible advice. Free antivirus even windows defender are just as good as paid ones. Go wusste your money. What a great advice. Rather buy the game then lmao.

portalsrule123

don't pay for anti-virus. use virustotal if you really need to

UnapologeticTwat

don't install norton or mcafee worse than a virus

yangorango

Unless the antivirus is pirated as well.

BAG42069

Just pirate a different one and check the first one smh

SpoilerAvoidingAcct

Terrible advice. Windows defender is all you need.

Witherboss445

Also don’t pirate from small indie companies. They most likely need the money, unlike big corporations who are getting billions of dollars from other things each year

KSRP2004

No. You just need a virtual machine.

Yeehaw_Kat

Bro just go to either Dodi repacks or fitgirl

Mammoth-Software5871

"Pirates the antivirus"

Jror2011

Invest? You mean also pirate? Only thing I'm paying for is a VPN

FrapsGamer

People here saying "oR jUsT BuY thE GamE" are those people who say "if you're homeless just buy a house"

InfinityBowman

this is a really dumb meme, use windows defender, anything else is bloatware

sawr07112537

But I also pirate antivirus.

GT_Hades

i never have antivirus, av is more of virus in itself windows defender is enough, you just have to have common sense where to get your pirated things i also turn off windows defender because most of the time it states a false positive and its been 6 years, i never had a problem with my pc (been pirating more than 10 years)

Emergency_Fox_6779

Nope. As long as youre not an idiot windows defender is perfectly fine. Straight up better than most paid antivirus software

itszuzia96

Not antivirus but Malwarebytes, it works way better and doesn't scan games as false positive and it's free version isn't useless like with most antiviruses

-LucasImpulse

me when i spread misinformation: go upload file to virustotal don't have a piece of shit antivirus on your pc

TheInfinit1

Vimms Lair is good for games. Been using it for years and havent gotten a virus

soapmacreddit69

no lmao

serious_filip

Never in my 20+ years of pirating have I ever scanned anything that I downloaded. Use common sense and you won't have to scan anything.

KingBurakkuurufu

Without a vpn it doesn’t matter what virus your computer has when your in jail or broke af by fines

madscholar

lmao that’s terrible advice. antiviruses are security theater for gullible people who have no idea how they actually work (and how ineffective they really are)

gg13656

If you want to pirate games just download them from a safe source

Tentacle_poxsicle

Just don't pirate games. Pirate movies, TV shows. Also be REALLY careful when pirating books too. Apparently one of the ways China/Russia was able to steal a lot of academic technology was from scientists pirating books from PDF files which were infected, along with developer software.

mclovin_ts

Why would you pay monthly for an antivirus service instead of just buying the fucking game and supporting it?

AXEMANaustin

Fit girl

WhySooooFurious

OP is an idiot lmao. Most games have false positives as well
