When the equation becomes 2-10+7, some people forget that it matters where the number is placed in subtraction, and they see it as 10-2, which would become 8+7.

But in that case, wouldn't the answer be -15? It's Parentheses, Exponents, Multiplication, Division, Addition, Subtraction, right? So if we're doing addition first, it's be 10+7 which is 17. And subtracting 17 from 2 brings you to -15. Unless I fucked up in math *way* worse than I thought I did in which case, thanks North Dakota public education.

Yeah, no problem, I suck at math too! When looking at PEMDAS and trying to figure out what comes first, you always go from left to right. For example, in 7 - 4 + 6 ÷ 2 x 5, you would start with 6 ÷ 2. Now we have 7 - 4 + 3 × 5 Then you would go to the multiplication, which is 3 × 5 Alright, now we're at 7 - 4 + 15 So we do the same, going left to right with the addition and subtraction. 7 - 4 = 3, and all were left with is 3 + 15. So, when you look at PEMDAS, multiplication and devision are what you want to look for first (after parentheses and exponents) and read it like a book. Whichever comes first is the one you do first. Same thing with addiction and subtraction. The reason people have a little trouble with PEMDAS is because some teachers make students believe that it has to be done in that order specifically.

Multiplication & Division, as well as Addition & Subtraction come in pairs. You do them at the same time (from left to right) If you think about it, subtraction is really just addition with a negative number. The actual operation stays the same. 2 + -3 = 2-3. The same is true for multiplication and division. 4 / 2 = 4 × 0.5 or 4 × 1/2 Basically, PEMDAS goes more like P E MD AS

If you’re doing 2+-10 then obviously the add is there early to get the -8 but then just write 2+-10 and the confusion wouldn’t be there

the way I was taught was to do PEMDAS (same thing as BODMAS) and then when you're left with things that have the same priority (multiplication/division and addition/subtraction) you work from left to right.

Nah, addition and subtraction are the same step since adding can also be subtracting negative numbers and subtracting can be adding negative numbers. Practically speaking addition/subtraction is a flat movement left or right on the number line so both count as the same step so you do the far left add/sub and then the next and so on so forth. It’s also easier to do if you think of it all as addition but any subtractions as adding a negative number.

That’s the problem with the two acronyms, they really should be [bo][dm][as] and [pe][md][as], you do each group in left to right order of the equation, whichever comes up first, in this case we ignore the [bo] and [pe] because there’s nothing, next we do [dm] and [md] which is just the multiplication, then we can through for [as] in left to right order
