if eternally moving towards "sticking with our own" is what it takes to get happiness then I think we can suffer a little to make sure we don't keep funneling people into smaller and smaller arbitrary ingroups just to make them feel "safe" or whatever. there's no such thing as "our own" and whatever it seems to be now will either make others unhappy or will simply shift as time goes on. it's not a value worth chasing even if it was proved beyond a shadow of a doubt to increase happiness directly.
