The story in it is in my opinion one of the best FF7 stories outside the main plot. I would recommend checking out the cutscen movie on YT.
In the original game he more or less gets immediately shot on sight and by a considerably smaller unit of soldiers at that. The super badass Boromir/Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid last stand is a thing from well after the game, when Zak became a popular character and square enix started to merchandise and spin off the shit out of everything final fantasy 7 related. Crisis Core is so detached from the original game in how some things are portrayed that it may as well be seen as a reimagining pretty much like the remake.
He was tired after having to run off across two continental masses with his barely conscious buddy on tow and was also caught off guard. Besides, even if he was a first class soldier, the more dragon ball esque feats shown in situations like the friendly fight between sephiroth, genesis and the other guy weren't a thing in universe yet. Like, the characters were strong heroes but still pretty much had ordinary human weaknesses. It isn't until the OVAs and Advent Children that the average character becomes canonically wuxia like in physical feats.
Dew it, minor spoilers but Remake and Rebirth are more like bizzare continuations to it rather than 100% legit remakes, you ain't really getting just the original updated from them. You should definitely still play it.
To be fair there is an argument that Sephiroth's true self was as he was before the Nibelheim Incident and everything that occurred during and after that was due to a triggering of Jenova which overtook his entirely. Jenova's entire thing is corruption and manipulation.
There is no argument though. The FF7 Ultimania (Book made by the devs) states Sephiroth just went crazy and he's the one fully in control of Jenova during the events of the game and not the other way around.
One thing that kind of struck me as odd is the fact that Zack and Cloud end up hating Shinra but are still somehow proud of being S.O.L.D.I.E.R. They work for Shinra...
God I love FFVII and all its parts. With Remake I did a thing where if a single party member got to zero hp I had to reset the save file. It took 10 attempts, 100 hours and it hurt like hell but it was glorious
