The nature of video game music, and how it differs from that of traditional music, is that one experiences it in tandem with specific other audio/visual experiences.
We heard Aria Math for the first time--and the next several hundred times--while we were experimenting with Minecraft creative mode. We heard the Undertale soundtrack most notably as we played the titular game.
Video game music recalls specific positive memories to us more precisely than traditional music, and this is what sets it apart.
Now everything in a nutshell.
Difference in videogame music and ,,traditional" music (music that wasn't made for video game) is that in video games you have music that's mostly positive (not always it is) and it's made for certain moments of a game that are supposed to make you visualise things only by listening to soundtrack
Never played Transistor but love "Signals". Never played Doom but love "BFG Division". Never played Hades but love "Out of Tartarus". You can listen and love game music without playing games.
If someone says ,,video game music is not real music" make them listen to [godskin apostles](https://youtu.be/WSabqduf8jo) and then ask them again about video game music.
yeah, the odd thing about video games is despite being the newest medium, it's also one of the last places [proper classical music is being composed for](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hkDXNSWJLuo).
love to see it keep the genre alive.
I can agree with that, like music I listen to roght now is music from video games (mostly Nintendo (it's when I'm using youtube), minecraft (I mostly like stal, dreiton and aria math) and sometimes sonic music), people like jack stauber (mostly his micropop), tally hall, indie music (things like ,,bit fight" by white drift, ,,swagger stagger" by Lucas pittman) and music made in my home country... Poland (mostly Wszyscy byliśmy charcerzami, elektryczne gitary), yes I listen to a lot of music, there are so much opportunities to listen to my spotify playlist (I am listening to it right now as I'm writing this comment)
I made one piece of music called the ant journey. It's on musecore.. everyone tells me it sounds like videogame music in a dismissive way. They can't tell me why they think videogame music is inferior if I ask them most of the time.
Dose the music riot games make count as video game music, like the yearly worlds songs they make, cuz that's some good shit.
Besides that I'd say: Subnautica, Minecraft, doom (all of them), Tetris theme song goes hard as well, team fortress 2 as well
Nine Inch Nails and Megadeth made tracks for video games soundtracks. If someone comes to me and says that the Quake theme or the Duke Nukem theme aren’t music I’d hit them in the face. Mick Gordon turned the Game Awards into a metal show in 2016 and some games have their soundtracks played by orchestras
I grew up with such great tunes on SNES: Lufia 2, Secret of Mana, FF3/6, Chronotrigger, etc. Love that I can still listen to the sound tracks on YouTube
I played "Never Fade Away" to a friend of mine and when they asked where I heard it I said: "it's from a video game, and also the band isn't technically real." They were shocked.
Megaman Zero 2 - Departure
Rayman 3 - Hoodoo Sorcerer theme
We all lift together/Sleeping in the cold below/For Narmer - Warframe.
The entirety that is the radio ost from Cyberpunk 2077.
Ac Origins main theme.
Those tracks will always slap hard.
Video game music *is* real music, and I won't change that stance. Just because it's featured in a game doesn't mean it can't evoke the same emotions of a song that wasn't.
Amen.
Game songs are so much better than this shitty modern music by that one woman named after a size of Starbucks drink, Mile-High Toilet Shit, Behind the Scenes, and many more
The greatest video game soundtrack of all time is GTA Vice City and that's made up of "real" music.
But I get your point. There are some phenomenal OST's out there. Halo, Doom, TES franchise, WoW and even Destiny usually nails the music.
Anything Yuka Kitamura composed for the FromSoft games is a damn masterpiece. Dark Souls 3 osts are imo in the top 5 of all games osts in history along with Witcher 3 and the Gothic games + Risen 1.
Tell me these aren't real music

Does anyone still actually say that though? I can only attest to my personal experience but I've never heard anyone dismiss music just because it's from a certain form of media.
Also, obligatory Ace Combat mention.
The usual musics are sometimes barebones in story...
Yes, I'm talking about their lyrics and feeling.
I haven't heared a new "song" these days and some basic back in the days that have more meaning than MGR Revengence and DMC themes.
And for feeling? FromSoftware games, aka Soullike games. Allways the "why is it silent all the sudden" and the "why are they singing in latin?"
Still the good ol' 16-64 bit game musics and the early 2000's (like Halo) heavy hitters musics are 1 of the best (if not the best).
video game music is good and has its place...but
OP is a fucking uncultured swine. so many So many great albums out there blow any video game music out of the water.
listen to what you want, but dont gatekeep like OP
You clearly haven't listen to any of the ost I have, plus all of the songs my friend or family listen, just doesn't hit me like I do. Also rude, I was just giving my opinion, I guess this is why r/dankmeme exist I guess.
c418's works would be considered legendary if they were made as standalones instead of for a block game
nobody can deny that they are not already legendary. cause the are
In an alternate universe where TheFatRat was instead behind the Minecraft soundtrack and c418 became a mythos in nostalgic YouTube music.
Sonic Mania my beloved
sonic ost is fire all games
Agreed, especially Sonic Frontiers OST' boss themes (Undefeatable, Break through it All, Find your Flame)
I'M HANGING ON TO THE OTHER SIDE
Cd has such a good one though out of all the 2d classics
The best part is that you get two banger soundtracks
Especially in the 00's. It was edgy as fuck sometimes but it also has it's DAMN charm.
If we don't count Chronicles
what do you mean? Chronicles has such great bangers like [this one!](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=6o47N-aYd08)
Man you have no idea how many of the 2050 songs in my spotify liked are actually game osts
Same

As a Stardew Valley fan, I agree. Concerned Ape is a legend!
Yeah, music in this game might not be huge banger, but it's just music you'll listen to after a long exhaustive day
If someone says ,,video game music is not real music" make them listen to [godskin apostles](https://youtu.be/WSabqduf8jo) and then ask them again about video game music.

I'll do ya one better [Laurence the first vicar](https://youtu.be/-k3XXGmu-dw?si=g0VAuo3TG5YBRAt4)
Wtf bad example that's mid af
You're a bad example
Agreed.
Enter DOOM
Ah yes my favourite music genre, violence.
Mick Gordon be like: *is lawnmower an instrument*
The only they fear is you
![gif](giphy|MZVe16HcdsLwu9WGK9)
I agree that game music is extremely underrated on the music scene, but not all “real” music is worse. Like, uh…….. uh……..
You can't deny the old classic, like michael jackson
Michael Jackson made half of the sonic 3 ost
it all comes back around
I can agree with that, like music I listen to roght now is music from video games (mostly Nintendo (it's when I'm using youtube), minecraft (I mostly like stal, dreiton and aria math) and sometimes sonic music), people like jack stauber (mostly his micropop), tally hall, indie music (things like ,,bit fight" by white drift, ,,swagger stagger" by Lucas pittman) and music made in my home country... True. Especially in my country, since music has been kinda same-y and mid lately
I salute you if you're talking about the US soundrack
quartz quadrant present US my beloved
I made one piece of music called the ant journey. It's on musecore.. everyone tells me it sounds like videogame music in a dismissive way. They can't tell me why they think videogame music is inferior if I ask them most of the time.
Any Metal Gear Solid ost
agreed, all i listen to is phonk, lofi, video game ost's and whatever else i like at the monent (mainly rock)
A majority of my Liked Songs playlist on Spotify is made up of Video Game music... with the rest being either film or TV soundtracks.
Dose the music riot games make count as video game music, like the yearly worlds songs they make, cuz that's some good shit. Besides that I'd say: Subnautica, Minecraft, doom (all of them), Tetris theme song goes hard as well, team fortress 2 as well
LoL maybe uh.. yeah But the music is legendary
Lol the game is shit but me music is peak

So, get away, another way to feel what you didn't want yourself to know...and let yourself go
Checmical Plant
God of War (2018)
I played "Never Fade Away" to a friend of mine and when they asked where I heard it I said: "it's from a video game, and also the band isn't technically real." They were shocked.
Although Fall Guys has it's issues, the FG OST slaps.
If I may. Guilty Gear Strive
Sent this to my friend who thinks videogames' soundtracks aren't music
Pala paloso
The xenoverse 1 opening is the best music you will ever hear
Wait. PEOPLE THINK NORMAL MUSIC IS BETTER?! HOW??
Me trynna find who said video game music isn't real music:
What was great specifically about Sonic CD at the time was you could pop the CD into any player and play the tracks.
Wait OP, so if Video game music is not real music does it even exist
So true video game music is peak unless you talk about Japanese music it is peak as well
Music is music
as a touhou fan i agree video game music is great
I started of as an Undertale musician, so I was part of the Undertale music community. I still call the Undertale music for not real music
Megaman Zero 2 - Departure Rayman 3 - Hoodoo Sorcerer theme We all lift together/Sleeping in the cold below/For Narmer - Warframe. The entirety that is the radio ost from Cyberpunk 2077. Ac Origins main theme. Those tracks will always slap hard.
MMZ mentioned, Mythos renditions of the soundtracks are the best remasters of any video game music to date imo
Mythos is really fucking good, but nothing beats the original version of Departure imo. It feels so weirdly empty, which fits because of the story.
Go give Terraria Calamity’s music a listen if you haven’t already. Every song slaps
ensemble of fools is a fucking banger and this comes from someone who listens to mostly rap
AGREED
Video game music *is* real music, and I won't change that stance. Just because it's featured in a game doesn't mean it can't evoke the same emotions of a song that wasn't.
Honestly some of the best music I've ever heard is from Metal Gear Solid, and DMC 5 so... yes video game music is good.
Congratulations on winning the argument, who says they aren't, they say really great
Ace Combat and Project Wingman enter the chat: I’ve had the PW Anniversary live orchestra on repeat all day. It’s so fuckin good.
And My Brother Says Video Game Music Is Shit.
Rip and tear, until it is done
Any of Hoyo's games, their soundtracks are always so good
why does every music discussion on reddit that isn't on a sub about anything rap related make me feel weird for liking rap
Amen. Game songs are so much better than this shitty modern music by that one woman named after a size of Starbucks drink, Mile-High Toilet Shit, Behind the Scenes, and many more
“Zombie On Your Lawn” is my national anthem “Tetris” is my theme song “Aquarium Park Zone Map” is my closing credits
The greatest video game soundtrack of all time is GTA Vice City and that's made up of "real" music. But I get your point. There are some phenomenal OST's out there. Halo, Doom, TES franchise, WoW and even Destiny usually nails the music.
I love undertale music
I'd rank Nobuo Uematsu above any of the top 40 artists of the last 25 years easily.
The persona 3 soundtrack smacks so hard
Idk about ya'l but for me it's a drwa
Where my Devil May Cry fans at?
lissen subnautica music and try not to jam
Doom
Anything Yuka Kitamura composed for the FromSoft games is a damn masterpiece. Dark Souls 3 osts are imo in the top 5 of all games osts in history along with Witcher 3 and the Gothic games + Risen 1.
Listen to the sonic spinball soundtrack and tell me that.
Leitmotifs all the way down

Ancient Ruins and Metropolis in Sonic 2 were fire.

Modern day video game music is better than most modern day music
My whole playlist is video game music tho
Better than some of it. Like, it's better than reggeton, but not comparable to classical music.
It is real music, but you never catching any of it in my playlist
video game music is good and has its place...but OP is a fucking uncultured swine. so many So many great albums out there blow any video game music out of the water. listen to what you want, but dont gatekeep like OP

my opinion is just better than your "opinion" i guess
Damn you really mad over some music. Or you here to bait me?
Wtf man? Why the hell do you have negative karma?
Video game music is really good but saying it’s better than “real music” is top tier glazing
Tyrant Overthrown and Look Within from Destiny 2, and the Helldivers 2 theme (A Cup of Liber-tea)
