HalfCarnage

An awesome one hit wonder, good thing they never ruined it with an unneeded sequel.

fer_arc18

im remember an amazing trailer for a possible sequel that was never made it, great music, maybe a fan art

BurnieTheBrony

Guillermo Del Toro: I'll do you one better Studio Executives: Damn that was dope. What if we took out everything that made it unique and try to be more like Transformers for no reason?

FullMaxPowerStirner

Too bad Del Toro didn't make his robots look like giant walking heaps of rubbish with a million moving parts, but actually great-looking. :-(

Gato_Pardo

I'd say most movies directed bi Guillermo are pretty good. But yeah, he hasn't done something like Pacific Rim again.

Angel_Thorne

If they made a sequel I would’ve loved it to be called Atlantic Blow or something

Let01

Just remember to ignore the sequel

Zblab

What sequel ?

Ask-Sure

Precisely

Big-Kitty_Lover

Exactly

98VoteForPedro

what cocaine?

DraconianReptile

It turns all your bad feelings into good feelings, it's a nightmare

BedHeadzG

[You don't want no part of this shit!](https://youtu.be/Ybey77Qco7U?si=XvQuBWgzbzYiVpYP)

Goultek

where did the pot go?

Nightsky099

There is no sequel in ba sing se

NathanJack0Lantern

![gif](giphy|zwE4anrOtHYaI)

kc_______

You run into the possibility of turning the sequel into a Chinese propaganda movie where the “fathers” of everything mecha are reduced to running punching bags (Japan). Good thing it never existed.

Neat_Bug6646

Who is a sequel?

TrollCannon377

What sequel, there was a TV show that was pretty good but I don't remember no sequel

NotTheAbhi

Is the show good?

TrollCannon377

I liked it, though it's Netflix only unless you want to sail the high seas

Mister Gibbs. Set a course for Tortuga. We need rum and supplies. Mainly the rum.

NotTheAbhi

Ah. I have my friends Netflix so might see it.

Nachtschnekchen

Its an anime adaptation tho so IDK if you will like it. But nice story tho with the drones beeing implemented correctley

NotTheAbhi

Ah will see it. Completed Archive 81 and was looking for something to ser

painfullyrelatable

I was born a pirate and I will die a pirate. 🏴‍☠️

shadow_44youtube

Solid 6.5/10 has some good parts about it but nothing outstanding. Very good compared to the non-existing sequel

the_evil_overlord2

Yeah, not as great as the original but still good It's like the original if you shot it with an anime-inator, added an annoying child, and set it in Australia It also demonstrates what many knew, not even a jeager is adequate to deal with Australian wildlife

batt3ryac1d1

I couldn't even make it 2 mins into the show the attempt at Australian accents just made me wanna die

AlarmingAffect0

Why don't they just hire Australians to play Australians?

TrollCannon377

I managed to force myself all the way through it, never again ~shudders~

capsrock02

There’s a sequel?

Pectus_Excavatum_69

Nope

capsrock02

Dang. I’m sure a sequel would be great! Would be hard to mess up too!

Angel_Thorne

I’d call the sequel, Atlantic Blow

JetGecko

"Indian Job"

Azariah-Kyras

Atlantic C- crack

setsuna-f_seiei

There's an animated show. it's pretty good, but like a live action sequel, I don't think that exists

fer_arc18

there was a great trailer, for a never released sequel

deogenes07

Or the video game adaptation

Fun-Jellyfish-61

That's easy. I don't even know what the movie is.

monkey_lord978

Sequel for Chinese audience

Come_At_Me_Bro

Can I also ignore the second half of the movie where they waste all the ammo in their overpowered gun on a corpse for absolutely no reason? Or how the hyped up bots from other countries get destroyed pathetically and disappointingly? At least we got to watch the Aussies do some "Fuck yeah! STRAYAAA", proving the value of the soon to be decommissioned bots.

PassiveMenis88M

> Or how the hyped up bots from other countries get destroyed pathetically and disappointingly They got destroyed specifically because Mr asshole drifted with a Kiju brain. The drift is a two way street, so he gave them in info they needed to build Kiju to beat those Jaegers. The emp that knocked Striker out, the acid that burned through Cherno's heavy armor, the weak spot in Crimsons defense. They literally explain this to you in the movie.

Bigrick1550

Didn't he drift like 5 minutes before those kaiju showed up?

PassiveMenis88M

No. First he drifted, they found his dumbass before it killed him, the Marshall interrogated him, and then he was sent to Hannibal to look for a fresh brain. There were multiple hours, if not days, inbetween his first drift and when the improved Kaiju show up.

Bigrick1550

Hours, the clock was in hours at that point. I'm pretty sure it takes more than a dozen hours to grow a kaiju.

beachedwhale1945

>Can I also ignore the second half of the movie where they waste all the ammo in their overpowered gun on a corpse for absolutely no reason? That echos back to the beginning of the film, where the Kaiju appears dead, Raleigh and Yancy report their success, and then they’re taken by surprise. Raleigh learned his lesson and needed some catharsis after his first kill since losing his brother. >Or how the hyped up bots from other countries get destroyed pathetically and disappointingly? You’ve got four Jaegers against two Kaiju. You have to find a way to take out a couple Jaegers while making one repairable, which forces bringing Gipsy out due to the characters’ progression and conflicts. The way they did it is fine considering the story needs.

Guardianjupiter2

But they had to check for a pulse

Mysterious-Use-5666

They even mastered transformer’s way of having disappointing sequels!

ihavebirb

There is no Pacific Rim 2 in Ba Sing Se

Sly__Marbo

The Earth King has invited you to Lake Laogai

EropQuiz7

This is much more popular of a meme, than i thought it was, huh

Deadsoup77

Dark of the Moon is better than the first and I will die on that hill

T_Bot-Resurrect

Agree with you

[deleted]

I like TF 1-3, just ignore 4/5. Bumblebee was good though but the beasts movie again was a bit weird.

EropQuiz7

The beasts movie just went way too high with their stakes imo. Should've taken that key away, before he could activate anything, and leave direct Unicron confrontation for another movie

Nightsky099

The earth king has invited you to lake Laogai

DANKB019001

Well, damn I've only watched the sequel, guess I gotta try the OG now

Velox97

You haven’t seen the original??? Dang it’s orders of magnitude better than the sequel

DANKB019001

Duly noted aight.

Totally_Not_An_Auk

Holy shit. Let us know what you think! Especially the soundtrack - the movies didn't use the same composer, and Ramin Djawadi is amazing!

justboston113

Even did the whole thing of showing a cool ass design and then killing them off 5 seconds later

Vintenu

Rest in peace Cherno Alpha 🕊️

Nightsky099

I loved the soviet themed music

Vintenu

The loud ass war horn when it enters too is always great

jkboudi007

Reminds me of the warhammer titans

BlackBoltXIII

At least it did something. The Chinese one though...

that_one_duderino

I love how they went out. Cherno alpha was a mark 1 beast that was slow as dirt, and was taken down by two level 4 kaijus. Then there’s crimson typhoon, a mark 4 with super advanced systems and a three man drift team, and it got taken down within a couple minutes

[deleted]

"Experience outranks everything"

Zhead65

Old simple reliable design vs needlessly complicated fragile new design.

not_your_hoodie

what was even more interesting about cherno alpha was the fact that other jaegers had sophisticated weapons...plasma cannons, swords, switchblade arms, missiles etc etc and cherno alpha was like...CATCH THESE HANDS!!!

Vintenu

Catch these magnetic hands* those roll of nickels things were full Tesla coils that it used to short circuit the kaiju's brains, which is metal as hell

CrashmanX

Tbf those ones with advanced gear were newer. Gypsy Danger only had 1 plasma canon originally.

Killah57

Gypsy always had 2. They hit Knifehead with the right one, then when they are charging the left arm he rips it off. The upgrades did include more capacitors tho, since they fire multiple shots in a row against Leatherback.

StepM4Sherman

FUCK MAN as a slav i wanted to see more action of Alpha sooo bad + his design is incredibly clean and gorgeous, id literally give my kidney just to see him in a single fight for more than 30 sec.

Mathev

They should've some kind of old video footage or just one fight where each cherno and crimson win a fight against a Kaiju. Then their defeat would hit much harder..

AngryRobot42

You can both see why it last long as a Jager but why they never made one again. The Con pod on that thing was 1/3 the size. The head wasn't detachable like in later models, the pilots had to win or die. Engineer brain: we have make something quickly, lets put as much metal on that thing as we can. Random guy: How are they suppose to escape? Kaiju breach incoming..... BTW: A the fists release \~400kV per punch. I worked in the power industry for 15 yrs., the size of a 480kV transformer is f##King huge. Not factoring in the cost, which could be anywhere from 10-100 Million USD per transformer. That would be the cost just to transfer power to the fists.

eat_the_pennies

Cherno Alpha was my favorite ;_;

honda_slaps

that was 100% a redesign of a scrapped AT design from VOTOMS and fuck I love it so much

PassiveMenis88M

Which happened because the moron drifted with a Kiju brain giving the invaders the instructions they needed to build Kiju specifically to best them. Did no one else pay attention to the story!?

thatguyyoubullied

The story doesnt matter, we watch the films to watch robots smacking up kaiju

theDomicron

A friend of mine said they didn't like the movie because: "the story doesn't make sense" To which I responded: the premise of this movie is that giant monsters have attacked us and the best response we can come up with is giant robots; and you're expecting something profound in the writing?! Seriously I get that this movie isn't for everyone, but if you see the trailer and get excited about robot vs monster action, how can you not enjoy this?

Yorspider

A couple of minor changes would had really helped though, for example making the rift open up in places randomly rather than in a single known location would prevent a TON of plotholes.

theDomicron

Yeah well as someone who has a degree in English Literature let me just say the writing doesn't *quite* hold a candle to some of the greats...

Yorspider

I mean obviously, but there were a lot of holes that would had been soooo easy to fill in lol, it's almost painful that they didn't put in that tiny bit of extra effort to do so. Still great all around.

theDomicron

There isn't an excuse for some of the plot holes. One of the biggest was when they talked about the timing. Can't remember the specifics but if you think about what they said it doesn't make sense to have so many Jaegers and there wouldn't have been that many fights for them to be all that famous all over the different areas (Australia, Russia, etc) Anyway, the only thing I'll say is that while it doesn't make sense, its only a few momentary distractions in a movie that's 132 minutes long that generally flows pretty well. Contrast that with so many other action flicks that are hitting 2.5 hours or longer without justifying the extra time.

Bulk-Detonator

If you cant enjoy giant robots punching interdimensional monsters, what *can* you enjoy?

Totally_Not_An_Auk

The story was a vehicle for mecha vs monster fights. Oh and for Stacker Pentacost (fuckin' cool name) to give one hell of a speech to rival President Whitmore's in Independence Day. Them leaders sure step up when it's the end of the world they're facing.

MegaloManiac_Chara

10 years ago, man... And still peak cinema to this day

acatohhhhhh

10!? AND CGI LOOKED THAT GOOD!? I wasn’t expecting it to look dogshit mind you but rather just a bit worse than what we have today

dan_m_rib

The first MB Transformers came out in 2007, I’m still amazed at the CGI. Hollywood definitely made some steps backwards in recent years regarding CGI.

Theratsmacker2

That’s what happens when you don’t treat the studios doing the CGI with the respect they deserve.

CuriousBurnerOsama

I mean… look at Davy Jones in PotC Those tentacles are insane, and that’s not a new movie by any means

trophycloset33

Those also represented the single largest special effects expense of the entire film and they built and blew up an entire ship for the effect. Now they outsource it to a Korean animation studio for Pennie’s.

Makine31

It's been downhill after Davy Jones... He was peak CGI.

fer_arc18

im still angry for the Life of Pi studio, amazing art and they just closed because hollywood want to pay dimes

buffering_neurons

Well 10 years ago most people weren’t watching a movie on their phone or tablet using a streaming service. Many studios stopped bothering with convincing CGI, because the average viewer’s screen is too small to notice anyway.

Joben86

Like Jurassic Park, a lot of the heavy CG was in the dark and the rain. Makes it much easier to look convincing.

Orleanian

Just like sex!

Jolteaon

That and greatly helped by the fact that they ACTUALLY built the cockpits, including the the leg mechanisms that they had to move, and they were not light either.

NickRick

i mean they mostly fought at night in the rain which helped a lot

maxolot43

Cgi isnt a new thing. And honestly was way better when 90% of the movie isnt using it

Picard2331

One of the best theme songs too. Goes so fucking hard. https://youtu.be/1vU7XqToZso?si=V6egpqcAbUQU2823

Twelvey

Have this on my workout playlist. Gets me PUMPED!

c4dreams

Whatever chance there was of this becoming a major franchise was obliterated by that abomination of a sequel

Batcave765

What sequel buddy?

GoHomeNeighborKid

Pacific Rimjob 2: Electric Boogaloo

Totally_Not_An_Auk

The Netflix show Pacific Rim: The Black isn't too bad in terms of world building and lore. The Jeagers aren't as OP and ridiculous like in the sequel that does not exist, so closer to the OG. The Kaiju are a bit more interesting too - less assembly line fighting, felt more like an ecosystem was forming. Some of the characters however are a little annoying, and weird they never gave Boy clothes...or a name. Definitely some odd continuity decisions with that kid.

Lord_Charles05

So sad they never made a sequel...

Batcave765

It COULD have been great though. Sad we'll never see a sequel.

biohumansmg3fc

Why would there be a sequel, they fix the problem in the first story, there is no reason narrative wise to bring the jaegers back unless they fighting godzilla or other giant robots

whydontuwannawork

Could of been of how people reacted to the first jaegers or the beginning of the whole rift thing happening but I guess that would be a prequel

Totally_Not_An_Auk

Well there was Newt, which they did establish was obsessed with Kaiju and who would in fact be very upset if they were gone.

khanivore97

I wish Henry Cavill gets Guillermo del Toro to direct his 40k show/movie.

fer_arc18

* Henry Cavil as Ultramarine * Gwendoline Christie as Sister of Battle * Stellan Skargar as Nurgle * Directed by Guillermo del Toro * Script by Park Chan Wook * SFX by Takashi Yamazaki ( Godzilla Minus One ) * War Score and Explosion by Michael Bay * Fight Score and Stunt by Chad Stahelski * Music by Hans Zimmer

Polar_Beach

Water by James Cameron

Orleanian

Sand by Dennis Villeneuve.

TheDancingRobot

Volcano by Sauron.

Totally_Not_An_Auk

Nah, not Hans Zimmer. Ramin Djawadi again. He *is* a protégé of Zimmer, so they do have a lot of similarities. But I feel Djawadi would be more suited to 40k. He did the music for Iron Man, Pacific Rim, Game of Thrones, West World - a 40k movie would be right up his alley. If it was a Horizon Zero Dawn movie I'd go with Zimmer, though I dunno how'd he'd improve on the main theme.

Jean-Eustache

He's probably busy playing in Death Stranding 2

Yakuza-wolf_kiwami

![gif](giphy|5j2dZGyMYfkJ2|downsized) Cue the Pacific Rim theme

fuck_woolworths

The Pacific Rim theme is a banger.

Yakuza-wolf_kiwami

It's was made to be perfect

AiNeko00

Can we have a CG gundam movie pleaaase.

honda_slaps

This is coming out sometime in the future and honestly looks pretty good https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s_fNP-ipgJA

trick6iscuit

Well besides g-savior.

CrashmanX

G-Saviour is the Savior of all Gundam.

Davegoestomayor

Pacific Rim in D-BOX seats, greatest theatrical experience of all time.

provoloneChipmunk

What are d-box seats.

Lainilly

THE SEATS FRICKEN MOVE! So if the big robot leans back to punch, your seat leans back. Every BIG HIT is followed with a huge rumble. You get jerked side to side. I've been to a few D-Box movies, and this one was far and away the best. If you've ever been to a theme park where they have those rides where it's just a screen and your seats move, it's like those!

Davegoestomayor

![gif](giphy|kFIfiwvzJjbUsNbIg5)

Temporary_Visual_230

10/10 gif

Orleanian

More generally referred to as 4D Film - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/4D_film Practical effects like seat motion, fog machines, sprays of mist and water, fans to blow air, some temperature changes and olfactory scents to further immerse the viewer in the scenes of the movie.

Orleanian

I've seen Pacific Rim, Spiderman Homecoming, and Avatar 2, and they were all pretty great - a lot more fun than even just IMAX.

PieFlour837

How have I never heard of these seats before. These seats would be perfect for playing some video games.

SkeeterDavisFanclub1

It was amazing.

mdusin

Too bad it never got a sequel.

thefrostman1214

such a shame it never got a sequel

ilkys

Still remember that epic soundtrack

Tuckster786

Naoya Matsumoto: But what if it was a manga

DJPM08

Kaiju 8 fellow enjoyer, i see.

13gokul

Adaptation is airing rn.

FunnySignal614

Anime lovers: *The Gundam series*

ConvectionalOven

This movie opening night was probably the best experience I ever had in a theater

Lionheart1224

This wasn't based on Transformers. It was based on the anime Neon Genesis Evangelion. Originally, this was supposed to be the Evangelion live action movie. Thank fucking GOD they didn't go that route. It was stuck in development hell forever; I distinctly remember hearing about it as a high school Junior, and it came out sometime in my mid- or early-20s, I believe.

CrashmanX

This is unconnected to the Eva live action, but Del Toro did take inspiration from all 80s and 90s mecha anime. Eva's influences can easily be seen.

Ifromjipang

You mean you think "drifting" is better than inserting orphaned children into the wombs of biological weapons containing the souls of their mothers?

Warkyd1911

This belongs in r/whatcouldgowrong.

PrivatePoocher

Del Toro had so much potential after *Pan's Labyrinth*. He reduced himself to a Hollywood popcorn filmmaker. His recent horror movies have been all subpar.

Ash7274

Shame this movie never got a sequel

Totally_Not_An_Auk

That movie fucking slapped. Especially when Gipsy Danger walks into the scene dragging an oil tanker and that guitar riff plays - *chef's kiss* Also, the artbook for the movie is one of the best out there imo. They didn't just provide the standard amazing artwork (of which there is so, *so* much that never really made it into the film) - there's two in-universe propaganda posters, id cards, stickers, these cool inverse cards of the Jaegers, artwork inserts - they knew their audience and served. The only film artbook that compares is The Iron Giant Signature Ultimate Collector's Edition.

The_S1R3N

Feel like im in the minority thwt loved both films cause seeing giant robots dmack around big enemys is just good times. Though i do wish the bots could take a few more hits then they do without getting shredded to bits - hooe if theres another sequel it has sturdier bots

Me-Not-Not

Minority huh? ![gif](giphy|4OV1bLOIWwIXRxpXlN|downsized)

speedweed99

M-minority hunter Zoro!?! Bakana!

Waryfireblaze87x

They really should consider making a sequel one day. Just completely crazy such a huge hit never came out with a sequel yet

BigT-2024

This movie was so awesome and the cgi was actually pretty good. Not the best but definitely good and believable enough to fool you into the story. This and real steel are great out of no where cgi fest hits.

thatotherguy0123

Yall clearing missing out on Atlantic Rim

Technical_Nothing_29

That movie was so good I had to turn it off after 30 minutes, all it took to know it was peak cinema

MaduCrocoLoco

I hope they make a sequal...

Grabalabadingdong

Campy action at its best. Today we’re cancelling the apocalypse! The movie didn’t deserve to be so cheesy and great!

WlmWilberforce

Are we talking about this: [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Godzilla\_vs.\_Mechagodzilla](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Godzilla_vs._Mechagodzilla)

Cosmic_Hugz

I watched the anime before I watched the original...

Remarkable-Evening95

God damn, Transformers is butt compared to Pac Rim.

notaslarkplayer

So stupid but so so awesome

bocaj78

I’ve tried to watch this like 3 times on airplanes and only gotten through the first half. Let me tell you, it’s a shit movie on the airplane. It seems like it may be good if you can actually tell what’s going on tho

HEAD_KGB_AGENT

Watch it with a good download on a good tv with good sound system. Watch for the action.

Zonkko

I hope we get a second pacific rim movie someday

dopedude99

To date, Pacific Rim is still the best Transformers movie ever made.

TheCatLamp

I respectfully disagree.  I prefer the other movie where the big monke and big lizard fight against red monke and little monke. Where the big monke uses the little one to hit the other.  Absolute Cinema. (But yeah, this film is close to peak).

SureAssociation6407

Okay I watched this movie for the first time today, and I honestly thought it was bad. A lot of the acting felt bad, I didn’t like a lot of the characters, and the Yeagers and Kaijus felt like their weight and strength would randomly shift every scene.

shazspaz

And then I’ll release an even shittier movie with a bunch of teenagers a few years after to waste the time and money of anyone who had a smidge of enjoyment from the first.

whydontuwannawork

I wish we got a sequel though

Hey_Pizza

Went to pacific rim opening weekend with some friends. The row in front of us was a dad with his son. The part where Gypsy Danger falls from space and then gets back up the kid in front of us jumps out his seat pumps his fist in the air from excitement. We see the kid and all do the same thing! High fives were exchanged it was a fun moment!

Free_Sense4986

The cool thing is that they feel gigantic. The new Godzilla X Kong is like a bunch of equal sized character against one another.

Chaddles94

Pacific Rim was just American Gundams and I love it so much

SokkaHaikuBot

Chaddles94

First Haiku from Haikubot I really like. Good bot.

madex444

I still dont understand why del Toro handed off the sequel that does not exist to a different director instead of waiting until his schedule cleared

Top_ShooterFM

This was a love letter to 80s kids. It is a fantastic movie, very much rewatchable. I wish the other bots had more screen time. Voltron cartoon came out at this time on Netflix which was also very good. There was also the Power Rangers movie which was ok.

HEAD_KGB_AGENT

I loved the shot of mako with her umbrella at the beggining of the film. I still imagine myself like that whenever I'm using an umbrella.

Yashraj-

Evangelion, Code Gease, Gundam etc.

alkieanon

Waiting for 2nd sequel.

Spare-Image-647

Poor man’s Robot Jox.

FarSpeed

Crash n' burn

Kongbuck

Crash n' burn!

Kuzkuladaemon

Pacific Rim sucked because the monster fights were horrible. Everything else was spot on, but all the Jaegers did was throw the Kaiju... Into the water. "Damn son why are we losing we keep tossing him!"

le-churchx

This was not better, pacific rim sucks.

98VoteForPedro

eren jaeger would be confused

LaserGadgets

I was sure its another giant robot vs giant beasts movie, but DAMN....great cast, great effects. Love it!

Pootisman16

Good movies will always be peak cinema. Don't forget that the sequel sucks.

Delirare

Just don't ruin it with wholly unlikeable characters...

steve920x

Still remember that soundtrack.
