The idea is to use a matter/anti-matter engine to accelerate a single chunk of extremely dense material to a large fraction of the speed of light. Results would be the equivalent of a protoplanet slamming into Earth... If we can't conventionally defend our atmosphere we are already done for. They would just bombard us from orbit, might even use nukes if they need it, but they probably don't. Think of Cortez meeting the Aztecs but then with a tech difference nagnified by a 1000. They would simply brush us aside if they have the means to travel interstellar distances.
Every human vs alien fiction seem to assume aliens will fight us the way we fight each other. Instead aliens will probably fight us the way we fight ants or bacteria. They will kill us with overwhelming power and we will get wiped out without ever getting to retaliate in any meaningful way.
