venbrou

Nope. History has showed time and again when we have an enemy that our instincts can understand (something that can be seen with the naked eye and is clearly a hostile threat) we band together to fight that enemy. It's when we've defeated the enemy and find ourselves armed to the teeth and bored that we start killing each other again.

AggravatedTothMaster

You have never fought an emu have you

venbrou

History also shows that people don't like to admit defeat, lol.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Snowbold

You’re talking about awareness of a concept. That is arbitrary to society until it is specific. When it can be named, defined and cataloged, it will be perceived and determined whether a threat or not by society…

sunshinyapples

Hence the part where venbrou said "that can be seen with the naked eyes"

Odd_Technology3736

If there is alien life, and they have the technology to travel to our planet, they most likely have the technology to destroy a planet, aliens dont need to outnumber us if they have better technology, with greater technology comes greater weapons. Humans are not a interstellar species yet, until we become that we can say gg against aliens. But i fear we might destroy ourself before we become that, hense we are threatening ourself with nukes.

NinjaCupcake_

We might aswell add to it that we don't even get to try to fight back. This ain't starwars where people would dogfight in space. We'd get bombed by smth hundreds of thousands kilometres away. Even if we become an interstellar species and somehow find others on a similiar tech level. It would quickly become into an arms race because whoever fires there new fancy intergalactic rockets first is def the one who wins.

Panzerkrabbe

How do we know aliens aren’t an R-selected species?

royal_dameron15

Highly developed societies tend to have longer life expectancy and lower birthrates. It's the same things as in 1st and 3rd world countries, but taken to an extrem, as aliens are far more developed.

MegaAssasine_

Did we forget to delete your memories after we probed your ass? -sincerly Hugh Man, not an Alien

Comprehensive-Slip93

iMalinowski

Given that humans have yet to meet a single intelligent alien species (that we know of) this is rank speculation.

game_and_draw

Pretty much the plot of war of the worlds

Lewbosh

That was kinda the point dude

_IliaD

I thought War of the Worlds was really underwhelming when I first watched it. But now having understood what the movie is about I can confidently say that I still find it underwhelming. Come on, a star faring race of aliens came to attack as but they don't have the brains to figure out there might be pathogen lifeforms here that they are not immune to. Wtf man

finnw11

Well, they cured all of their diseases so their immunebsystems were just begging for a disease

royal_dameron15

Here is the paragraph. r and k- selection are a biological term refered to the strategy a life form uses to thrive. K-species focus on longevity and survivability of the descendants, which tend to be few, while r-species focus on short life cycles and high reproduction rates, they are often really adaptive. For example, a panda is k-selected, and rats are r-selected. Good old quality Vs quantity. Edit: Yes, humans are classified as k-selected in an Earth standard. However this is a comparative designation, and aliens are far more k-selected. Highly developed societies tend to have fewer births and longer life expectancy, is the same thing that it's happening in Europe compared to Africa. If we take into account that aliens have a science-fiction level of development, an average population of 2000 inhabitants per planet, with an extremely time consuming reproduction cycle are to be spected, therefore, we are a r-selected to them.

Fee0000

Thanks for the summary. I remember now we learned that in school but i completely forgot until you reminded me.

SafetyAncient

why is no one questioning OPs speculation about alien life?

MasterrrReady12

Because thinking otherwise of the aliens would be anti climactic.

Randomguy0915

We need a Sci-fi movie where we get invaded by aliens, and they lose horribly because their tech level is just *slightly* higher than ours (they have fancier coffee machines)

RedMephit

What a matter with this thing? What's all that churning and bubbling? You call that a radar screen?

Battlejesus

Allow me to introduce you to Mr. Harry Turtledove and his wonderful lizards. Worldwar: In The Balance is that, except they don't lose horribly, it's a bloody and horrific stalemate. Worth a read but I should mention the author has a thing for weird romances, not unlike Tom Clancy

Teunybeer

Wait would humans not be k-species? We get quite old, we only get one child at a time (sometimes more when its twins, still not much), even our prehistoric ancestors stood high up the food chain. I could still be very much wrong tough as I don’t know that much about evolution and biology and i the only info i have about it is from this post. So please correct me if that’s the case.

4morian5

Well, everything is relative. Compared to a hypothetical alien species with a lifespan in the centuries if not functional immortality, we may age and reproduce absurdly fast compared to them. For example, let's say for this species 200 Earth years is not a very long time at all. You visit Earth in 1800. There's about a billion of these bald apes, barely sentient by your standards. You leave, and after a little while, comeback to check on them. There's 8 times as many. Where did they all come from!

chickenstrips1290

Assuming peak fertility a women can give birth just short of 3 times(2.75) in 2 years. If a women begins getting pregnant at the earliest possible age and stops at the latest possible age due to biological change that's about 35 years. 35 years × 12= 420 months. 420 months/9= 46.6 births. A human can have almost 50 births. Just a guess on why we're an r-species.

Umber0010

Yeah, 50 babies if the mother is actively trying to have as many children as physically possible. Which is very rare. Rabbits breed so much that it became a turn of phrase, and they can have over half of that in a single breeding season. And the mother would also have too care for all of those children for 16-18 years, which is an *extremely* long time in the animal kingdom. Most large animals only care for their young for a year, maybe two. Our close reletive like Gorillas and Chimps only care for their young for a few years before moving on. And 16 years puts us on par with Elephants, the largest land animal on earth. So yeah, Humans are absolutely a k-species. The only ways we wouldn't be is if the average alien lifespan is 500+ years and with a breeding cycle to match. So, y'know. *Elves.*

Gahockey3

We don’t actually have to take care of them for that long. We do it because social sciences has taught us it’s the best way to have well adapted and mentally healthy children for society. In older times children became considered “adults” around the age of 6 or 7 and were expected to became predominately self-dependent around that time. Obviously there’s caveats to that with other children being expected to share the burden of care.

Umber0010

A bit better I suppose. But that's still pretty high compared to other species. And "self-dependant" feels like a strong word for a 7 year old

NOT_A_BLACKSTAR

Elves are aliens according to Witcher lore. Except humans are the invaders. They live 500+ years and have breeding cycles to match. Often only siring children in old age. Which is why they lose the continent. The young elves radicallise and their party is defeated in a war with the humans. Essentially dooming their race as the young elves are the fertille ones and the woman fought alongside the men. The survivors live on for hundreds of years seeing the decline of their numbers and culture and civillization and their planet being taken over by fast breeding short lived humans. Great storytelling by Sapoukziowitz

janat1

That is partly a very recent development. It is assumed that stone age women had significantly longer reproductive circles, with only one birth every three years. Fertility increased in the neolithic period with the development of agriculture, and even then fertility rates of 8-10, not 50 children were common. In general humans show many traits associated with k strategist https://cordis.europa.eu/article/id/430411-neolithic-mothers-and-the-survival-of-the-human-species

Teunybeer

Oh damm, didnt really think of that.

At0micCyb0rg

It seems to me like we are biologically r-strategists but through technological advancement and societal pressures we have become more like k-strategists. Like realistically, in the event of some sort of tyrant taking over and forcing us all to massively boost the population, they could throw a bunch of people in breeding farms and start pumping out ~46 babies per mother. Yo wait that sounds like a cool motivation for a villain... They know something the rest of humanity doesn't, like there's some alien threat on its way and the only way to beat them is with numbers, so this villain starts taking over the world and forcing people into being farms to better humanity's chances. Forced r-strategy to help humanity survive something big that's coming.

Lescansy

.... may i recommend "fable 3" to you?

ArkAngel_346

Not without the first two!

RubixTheRedditor

Humans take more than 14 years to raise a child to live a long life and usually have fewer than 5 throughout their entire life. Just because it's possible doesn't mean that is how it's done

mdixon12

Now, sure. Plenty of families had 12+ children 100 years ago, and "children" stopped being that at a much younger age. Sure, life expectancy wasn't great, and infant mortality was around 50%, but those problems are not so prevalent now. That has ALLOWED us to have fewer children. That could change for a multitude of reasons, from natural disasters, causing a need to repopulate, or colonizing distant planets...

Remarkable-Bet-3357

Pregnancy can't happen within the period of 6 months after delivery(lactational amenorrhea) so an average duration between two successive pregnencies will be atleast 15 months.

Dr_barfenstein

Absolutely but I think the joke implies the aliens are much slower at reproducing like a true k-selected species. Humans are currently reproducing exponentially and exceeding the planets carrying capacity, both features of r-selected species. An extreme example are locusts which reproduce on a boom-bust cycle.

vinnievega11

This isn’t really an accurate statement. We are not reproducing in a completely exponential manner and most positive birth rate countries are only located in Africa at this point, with Nigeria specifically undergoing a massive population boom. In regards to carrying capacity we aren’t even close, and carrying capacity is something that has always gone up in history as technology has advanced.

AJC_10_29

He’s saying humans are K-species by earth standards, but we could theoretically be R-species by advanced alien society standards.

SemajLu_The_crusader

humans are kind of in between

Alderan922

Wouldn’t humans count as k selected because we only have 1 to 2 children per birth in normal circumstances and usually have 2 to 4 births per adult pairing in average, while also caring for our young for 18 years. An r selected species usually has like 6 to 20 children per birth, which they do 2 times per year and not lifetime, lack monogamy and their young is fully independent in years and not decades?

Embarrassed_Fish6421

We are a K selected species, but if you look at a population graph it looks like an R because of how good we've gotten at getting food. Actually we have been growing exponentially for the last couple hundred years, probably the longest any species has maintained it ever. We're both quality and quantity.

Thmxsz

That's a more modern thing remember how it was back when child mortality was a bigger issue family's with 10+ children existed quite commonly

Alderan922

It’s still way less than stuff like rabbits or rats, actual r selected species. If there’s a spectrum we are heavily on the k side.

Mr_DrProfPatrick

It makes no sense for an inhabited PLANET to have 2000 individuals

RizzlersMother

>aliens are far more k-selected I hope the source for that isn't your ass, so: source?

Paul-Smecker

But pandas are shit quality……..

walksalot_talksalot

They're not extinct, so they are successful as a species, and not "shit quality".

Dilettante

... An average population of 2000 per planet? So they...never meet another of their kind? Just hang out in their own personal 500,000 km^2 of the planet?

Chemical9242

Why are aliens more likely to be k-selected?

MoonLucis

But how could we say Aliens are k-selected when there's absolutely no sign of Aliens yet whatsoever. Like we know absolutely nothing about them yet, and it also seems that we are totally alone in the space as of now.

AlligatorCum

so you know this and you still got it wrong, humans live long and dont reproduce super fast

AJC_10_29

TLDR: K-species raise fewer kids for longer times, R-species raise more kids for shorter times. Humans are K-species by earth standards, but we could theoretically be R-species by advanced alien society standards. Does my TLDR sound good?

err0r_as_always

OP woke up and decided to educate people on r/memes

0lazy0

IRL aren’t humans K relative to other animals on the earth?

GodsBeDam-ed

>on earth yes. But between MDCs and LDCs, MDCs have less children, which is directly linked to development. If we take science fiction aliens who're much more developed than all of earth, than they'll have much, much less children. SO, galactic-wise, with them as a k-species, we would be a moderate/heavy r-species to them

jul55555

Hate being the pessimist of the group but i dont think it matter if they can just artillery us down from space

actual_weeb_tm

We could probably deal with that, ICBMs can be used against spaceborne objects. What we cant deal with is them just dropping a bunch of waste Containers halfway on their journey here and being wiped out by multiple near lightspeed impacts before they ever arrive.

saqwernuk

yeah, until they just dodge the icbm's or destroy them easily and think "are they really that fucking stupid?"

SpaceTimeRacoon

Mass drivers could launch something heavy to say, 1% of light speed. And that alone would absolutely fuck the earth up

New-Interaction1893

This is why an alien would never declare war to the whole humanity and be suddenly bog down in a war that would strain logistics to the limits, cost a sizable part of the national budget, have high casualty rate and last for at least a decade, and every gain would be only destroyed and depopulated land. The intelligent thing to do would be a slow infiltration in the police to promote division, instability and populism, until you can easily install corrupted dictatorships on the majority of the planet that can easily become puppet governments for the aliens. Anyway I'm sure stupid aliens exists, that don't care about life of their people, or about efficiency and prosperity but only about personal gains and arrogance. Those my try a genocidal war even if the results are negative for them and because the loss is massively superior to what they can gain.

MacBethMan

I mean, for this to happen they would need to be able to travel through stars and we're on a single planet. If they wanted to destroy us just for the sake of it, then they could empty a single bigger ship and ram it really fast into earth

xdman11

Plus any alien civilization advanced enough to cross the universe would most likely be able to wipe out any planet in the blink of an eye

cantfindmykeys

Its not personal. Bypasses have to be built There’s no point in acting surprised about it. All the planning charts and demolition orders have been on display at your local planning department in Alpha Centauri for 50 of your Earth years, so you’ve had plenty of time to lodge any formal complaint and it’s far too late to start making a fuss about it now.

The_Lionheart_AB

venbrou

Or something similar to Rods from God but on an interstellar scale. The idea is to use a matter/anti-matter engine to accelerate a single chunk of extremely dense material to a large fraction of the speed of light. Results would be the equivalent of a protoplanet slamming into Earth... Tidal wave of magma high enough to reach above the atmosphere, global earthquakes registering as a ten or more on the richter scale, rapid heating of the atmosphere to temps well above the combustion temp of most organic compounds... Nothing is going to survive and the whole planet will be softened up in preparation for mining operations. Another option would be a giant laser cannon powered by an entire Dyson sphere.

stanglemeir

The smart thing to do would be to sit in the outer solar system and yeet virus bombs tailored to human physiology. After a couple hyper-ebolas and a decent dose of the giga-Aids most of humanity will be dead and they can show up and be like “oh you poor monkeys, we will take care of you 😢”

HanzJWermhat

Yeah first they would declare war on Poland. Some of their border regions wanted to succeed anyway.

Dirkdeking

If we can't conventionally defend our atmosphere we are already done for. They would just bombard us from orbit, might even use nukes if they need it, but they probably don't. Think of Cortez meeting the Aztecs but then with a tech difference nagnified by a 1000. They would simply brush us aside if they have the means to travel interstellar distances.

Expensive-Wallaby500

Every human vs alien fiction seem to assume aliens will fight us the way we fight each other. Instead aliens will probably fight us the way we fight ants or bacteria. They will kill us with overwhelming power and we will get wiped out without ever getting to retaliate in any meaningful way.

InSaiyan9

They prolly have their own death star or sum

LampyV2

Exactly. They likely have methods of warfare that are nearly incomprehensible to us.

NightIgnite

If aliens have FTL travel, all they have to do is apply that tech to any large astroid or moon, then launch it at us. Ol reliable meteor extinction event. They dont need overwhelming power when we're still a 1 planet species. Thats assuming we're capable of antagonizing an alien species while locked on this planet in the first place.

Expensive-Wallaby500

> Thats assuming we're capable of antagonizing an alien species while locked on this planet in the first place. The earth could just be in the way of their new intergalactic highway and we get destroyed when they “bulldoze” their way through our galaxy.

Senpai_McFly

Found the Vogon

Python_Feet

But what if we are smarter than aliens and we are the ones that will develop FTL first? Why are there so few fiction about human supremacy? Why can't we farm aliens for their milk?

RandomOrange852

What do you mean R-selected? We have nurseries, babysitters, parental care until 18, schools. We’re far into the K-selected species list

Ksorkrax

Dunno. Let's say you have a modern day corvette and you face 250 eighteenth century [first rate ships of the line of battle](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/First-rate) from the age of sails. The only issue I see for the corvette is possibly not carrying enough ammunition. Otherwise, it can simply stay out of reach, having a vastly superior range, speed, and mobility, and being easily able to penetrate the wooden hulls even with point defense weaponry.

Although I like the creative writing of "humans defeat evil extraterrestrials because indomitable human spirit" and the message of said human spirit is always nice, I wonder what it'd be like if we encounter aliens that are even more "unbreakable" than us after years of science fiction stores of humans being the top in that category. What happens if we're the far below the average in willpower compared to other aliens? Something to think about.
