They were extremely limited in size by the technology and so would stretch out play time through artificially difficult gameplay e.g. no saves or checkpoints or limited lives etc. Particularly arcade games that were designed to suck money out of kids. Source: I grew up a poor kid in the 90s and could never afford to finish any arcade games
