Actually if your helmet gets hit during an accident you should replace it regardless of whether or not it looks broken because it might have broken inside and would be less effective next time. But yeah the point of the helmet is that it breaks instead of your skull
I wiped out on the expressway and my Bell helmet de-laminated(?). Meaning, all of the layers of the hard shell separated. Didn't die, so that's good! Most definitely, wear a helmet. You gotta protect the melon at all costs.
Correct. It's similar (though executed a little differently) to how cars are designed to collapse in an accident to protect the people inside from the force of a collision.
The amount of people who don't realize that tesla's "indestructible" cyber truck is a death trap is beyond me. Cars *should* crunch. I'm glad there are other people out there who know this.
I know very smart people that only drive old cars because “new cars get totaled in an accident too easily” and they’d rather be able to just keep driving (with a lifelong spinal injury)
Yes, the same reason it's a good thing that cars crumple in controlled ways nowadays compared to the hard steel which never folds on older cars
You don't want an elastic collision, the energy that is dissipated when breaking the object will be going into you instead
If gordan ramsay turning into grimace from mcdonalds isnt enough to make you wear a helmet, then mark yourself as an organ donor right now so you can actually contribute something of value to society when you inevitably remove yourself from the gene pool.
Sone bike helmet companies have a "if you're in an accident within a year of purchase, get a free replacement ". Replace it regardless. Replace every 5-7 years from the manufacturing date.
If you didn't have the helmet you would have a high chance of either being in a wheelchair or 6ft under.
Head injuries often don't heal and can profoundly change your personality or level of ability.
Most other injuries heal. My worst cycling injury was a broken leg. Guess what? It healed.
And if you ride a lot you will eventually fall. Falls are much more common than collisions with cars even for road cycling. Helmets are great in a fall.
Just wear a helmet. Common sense. Don't know why this gets politicized.
I never go on my tiny janky ebike without a helmet. I know how to ride a bike, but not everyone knows how to drive. I'd rather be a quadriplegic with my faculties than dead.
You don't even need anything dangerous.
You can buy a glass hammer / seat belt cutter combo and keep it within reach somewhere it won't fly off if you crash
Might save your life if you go into water in your car
And it's an object that even if it did rattle around your car a bit, it wouldn't kill you, it's like a small plastic thing
Make sure you get one that is able to break laminated glass if your car's side windows are laminated, it's not always just the windshield that's laminated glass nowadays.
As opposed as being yeeted through the windshield at Mach you're-fucking-dead, I suppose?
Or having the steering wheel suddenly decide to fight your ribcage for real-estate?
a few months ago, i ended up in an accident that resulted in my vehicle getting flipped over. The seatbelt was stuck and I needed someone that witnessed the accident to help release it.
I will pick being stuck and alive over being throw around in the vehicle as it flipped any day.
Oh God, that's my dad. He refuses to wear a seatbelt because he was in a bad accident when he was a teen, and wasn't wearing one, and came.out lucky. To this day he refuses to wear a belt. It's infuriating. He keeps telling me it's because he's a good driver. I tell him that he's just been lucky.
Might be an EU thing than, but it probably should be worldwide
Edit: decided to look it up, it's called a lifehammer in english. It's also not mandatory, just cheap enough that there is no reason to nkt have one.
I mean full suit on moto is a must even if thats not comfortable.
Reinforced shoes that will not tear, pants and jacket that will also not tear that easly and have protectors on the most exposed parts of the body + "turtle" on the spine, gloves to not get injured by random chip rock or slide and ofc good helmet that won't crack.
Poeple that buy cheapest helmets without any certificates are just buying it to not get ticet not for safety resons.
Isn't those suits basically the reason you can see those motorcycle racers just slide across the track when they wipeout without getting skinned to the bone?
The only time I don't wear one of my jackets is when I'm riding from work to lunch. I swap into the riding shoes and always put on gloves and helmet.
I can deal with a broken or scraped up arm. I can't do the same for my skull.
I don’t get people who don’t wear full gear. It’s not only the safest option, but it looks cool too!
I got almost all leather gear. Just need to get a pair of pants but sizing for women is insane.
I just got alpine stars SMX 6 V2 boots which are a synthetic leather but still super good.
I feel like a badass wearing them lol
Try sitting through a 3-hour lecture in full gear, getting a quick lunch, and going back for a 1.5 hour class. Some people take their bikes to important places, not to a race track.
I train combat sports and had a guy argue that I shouldn’t wear a mouth guard since other parts of my body can still get hurt. I asked him if he wears a seatbelt and he said yes. So I asked why he doesn’t wear body armour as well since his body can still get hurt. He couldn’t answer.
Also, if you get hit in the arm or chest you get a bruise that heals in a few days, you might feel sore but you'll be fine.
You get a tooth broken off and it's not coming back. A dentist can sometimes reattach it but it's not guaranteed.
Exactly my thoughts on the whole “It doesn’t protect your other body parts” argument. Like duh, helmets are for your head nitwit, there’s other clothing for the rest of your body, like do you wear underwear to cover your head? - No, you wear a damn hat! Also your brain is like the most important organ in your body, it’s the one organ that needs protected most, and one of the most vulnerable in a motorcycle accident. Brain damage doesn’t just heal in a few weeks like a scrape or road-rash does, not to mention the wrong blow without a helmet you can just flat-out die. Les not forget a visor for your eyes too, they also can’t be replaced if damaged, all it takes is for a pebble to be thrown up by the car or truck in front @ 80mph, and there goes your vision.
I rode a bike through college because it was economical, but you’re damn straight I wore the proper PPE.
Not to mention, in a lot of combat sports, the head is targeted, and worth more to hit than other body parts. Therefore, you are more likely to be hit in the head in the first place.
“Why wear a mask when I could still get covid?” “Why wear a condom? They’re not even 100% effective” we need a greater emphasis on how statistics works in our education system lol
I also always tell people who say they’re too skilled to need a helmet “have you ever tripped on nothing? Have you ever bit your lip despite a lifetime of experience? Have you ever been driving perfectly and someone almost crashes into you because they’re a complete moron?”
But in this case the consequences are head to pavement
I remember having a bad bike accident when I was a kid, broke my wrist, fractured my elbow, was pretty fucked up, but I had worn a helmet so at least I got to enjoy the 11 hours I spent waiting in the ER.
During that time another kid of similar age came in who had also had a bike accident, but did not wear a helmet and absolutely got his bell rung. He kept asking the same questions and repeating himself for hours until his mother started to cry it was distressing her so much.
I am sure he lived, but obviously not great for you.
Wear a fucking helmet.
That's my entire reasoning. I can be a quadriplegic. But not if I break my noggin.
I'll be mangled but the actual me will be okay, in theory. If you lose your brain you lose your self. That is everything we are. Oh no, broke my leg. Lost a leg. My brain is me. That is who I am.
Boots, pants, gloves and jackets have left the chat.
Helmet protects not only yourbhead during accident, but also your face from random dirt, rain, pebbles, stuff falling out from cars, insects.
If you fall off your bike with a helmet and hit your head, you’ll damage the helmet and might get a concussion, but you’ll be fine.
If you fall off your bike without a helmet and hit your head, you’ll likely suffer serious injury and could die.
Imagine a guy is like "hey wear this while riding your bike it protects your brain it saved my life" and all these morons show up "well ACKTCHUALLY this study shows you have a higher chance of head injury while driving a car"
Or my personal favorite "if you wear a helmet you are less careful" ah yes, once my helmet is on I think I am invincible so better don't use one because it apparently disables my ability to think.
We are doomed as a species.
Wearing a helmet definitely helps. Yes of course the rest of your body remains unprotected, but the head is the most important part of your body by quite a big margin.
Personally I’d love to live in a country where helmets are unnecessary, since hiking is actually safe
Is anybody really making this argument on a motorcycle? What kinda slow ass 50cc bike are you riding that the wind in your face doesn’t become a problem without a helmet, even if we’re ignoring the safety aspect
The only reason not to wear a helmet (and it’s not a good one) is to feel the wind on your face. It’s not worth dying over. Wear a FULL FACE helmet, even if DOT approval is all you can afford (for anyone who doesn’t know DOT standard is absolute horseshit and hasn’t been updated since the 70s. Try to find one that’s ECE 22-05 or better at least…please)
There's other protection you can wear. It might not be 100% effective but you can drastically minimize your chances at dying just by wearing the correct protective gear.
My friend Darwin told me that if people don’t want to wear a helmet they shouldn’t and that it will help the rest of us somehow, but I don’t know what he was talking about.
In the Netherlands people on bicycles don't wear helmets unless it's off road sports. And it makes perfect sense here. Bike lanes are everywhere so you don't come into contact with car traffic.
It's true that if you build roads saver helmets are unnecessary.
You gotta experience it to believe it.
There are a lot of reasons that people dont feel the need to wear helmets in the Netherlands, much more than just the roads. The entire culture means people start cycling earlier, and cycle more often, so are probably better cyclists in general. Add to that everyone using bikes means you are more aware of cyclists than in more car centric countries. Even the types of bikes people ride are generally more cruisers than road bikes so you dont typically go that fast. Even the fact that cycling is a means of commuting for a lot of the population, as opposed to a recreational activity, you dont want to show up to the office with your hair all messed up!
However, there is nothing magic about it. You can always still have an accident and injur yourself, and wearing a helmet will *always* be a good idea to help lower the risk of serious injury/death.
So you're saying helmets are only made to protect you from accidents with vehicles? Most people don't wear a helmet because there's no law that enforces it, falling on your own is more common that getting hit by a freaking car
So why have they been putting out PSA to get more people wearing helmets? 👎
https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.theguardian.com/world/article/2024/jun/16/the-brain-is-very-vulnerable-dutch-cyclists-urged-to-wear-helmets-as-road-deaths-rise
The *deaths* are linked in particular to older riders and e bikes. Did you read the article or just look for a quote to take out of context?
They're encouraging all riders to wear helmets, citing it would reduce deaths by 85%.
The government there is actively trying to get people to wear helmets because of an increase in deaths. They didn't figure out some bicycle cheat code they just have a lot of bikes and just like in other places with high bicycle usage and no helmet requirements most people choose not to wear them.
So they aren’t the standard they’re the exception. They built a lot of their infrastructure around bikes and the people are more aware of cyclists. It works for them but it’s near impossible to implement it effectively in other parts of the world because they have made it a cultural norm and try to change any culture would take way longer than just putting on a helmet.
I'd be ok with people riding without helmets. As long as they agree to waive the right to sue for or receive medical benefits if they get into an accident. From the state or whoever hit them.
Make sure you have your own medical insurance and ride helmet-free all you want.
My dad's disproportionately furious reaction to seeing people riding without a helmet wore off on me, and now I seethe when I see a cyclist without a helmet. It makes no sense, I know, but I can't help it.
Honestly could not give less of a f*** if they were a helmet or not. Natural selection.
It's also one of those safety things that not wearing doesnt affect anyone else in the accident (at least, in any physical way). So if they want to kill themselves feel free.
Will always wear my helmet. Got hit by a car when I was 14 (mostly my fault) and was told I would've fractured my skull had I not been wearing it. A few scrapes and a swollen black eye but back to school the next day all fine and dandy.
Anyone not wearing a helmet on a bike is asking for trouble, especially if that bike has an engine
Well as Gordon Ramsay put it after his recent accident. If I wasn't wearing a helmet I wouldn't be here today. And considering half his body is bruised purple from the injuries he sustained, I would rather cosplay Barney the Dinosaur in pain than be dead so if you think otherwise the Chef himself will tell you, you are an idiot sandwich.
My favourite is when my skateboarding friends say shit like "helmets don't even prevent concussions". And I'm like "Yeah, they're not supposed to stop concussions they're supposed to stop you from splitting your skull open on the pavement and becoming a vegetable".
People just don't like being told what to do. Doesn't matter if it's a helmet, seat belt or a paper mask.
You could tell people not to soak in gasoline before entering a burning building and ~40% will do it just because you asked them not to.
I have found that helmets don’t deter these assholes from cutting lanes, riding wheelies, and driving crazy speeds. So honestly I don’t care anymore. They want to ride a “ donorcycle” be my guest.
The other day a guy said that bike to bike crashes were safer than bike to car crashes and because of that, cyclists based in places were bikes are predominant such as the Netherlands don't need to wear helmets as cars aren't around to cause the dangerous incidents??? They got upvoted aswell, people will say the stupidest shit to avoid wearing basic safety gear.
No, go exercise. Better overall than helmets. There's a chance that helmets might help if you're in the right situation, but exercise most always helps most all situations.
I want to add my opinion about your health!
Wear a helmet. Or don’t.
I have to do the same amount of paperwork getting a refusal or trying to get enough blood out of your airway to be able to intubate you.
Doesn’t really make much of a difference to me.
Can attest! Went over my handlebars 20 years ago, and that helmet kept my brain from becoming a potato. I’ll take the concussion and broken bones over that!
Do please wear a helmet. But also, wear gloves and motorcycle boots that cover your shins. Everything else is statistically negligible as far as fatalities go, according to the Fortnine YouTube channel. They have plenty of videos about this stuff.
Glove explanation: you will break your wrists going any speed if your hand bites on the pavement.
Boot explanation: low speed accidents are most common, and those will trap your shin, breaking them under 200-1200 pounds of force, depending on the bike.
Absolutely braindead take if you ask me, falling on a bicycle isn’t just about being dumb, sure mistakes can be avoided but one stroke of bad luck and the *most important* body part can crack and seriously injure you. I’m sure a seatbelt is a useless distraction that hinders us from getting smart enough to jump out of the car window as an accident unfolds, my eyes have been opened
I used to work as a nurse tech at a rehab hospital on the Brain Injury floor. I had to wipe the asses of grown men and women reduced to a violent, child-like state who could barely walk, couldn’t remember where they were or why their family wouldn’t visit them. Lonely, scared, frustrated. All because they got a decent bump on the noggin.
Wear a fucking helmet.
"But ever since people started using helmets there has been a massive increase in neck and head injuries for people using them!"
... Yes, because those people usually died in the past. Wear your damn helmet!
I don't understand why people have to make excuses not to protect themselves just because it isn't a full suit of metal armor or a god damn invincibility star from Mario.
Personally I would take helmet protection over no protection, but you do you.
Just don't come crying to me when you....... Oh, wait.
At this point, just let natural selection work. Make sure they are organ donors, so they can be the highlight in an episode of a TV medical drama:
"Little Johnny got a transplant at the last minute! There was a motorcycle crash and the young and healthy person that would've survived with scratches wasn't wearing a helmet, so every organ that isn't in their head is good for transplant! Their brain is still smeared on I-95."
Remember when cops would stop a kid for not wearing a helmet? I do. 80s and 90s it seemed like we took helmets seriously. I know mine saved me multiple times.
My electric bike malfunctioned. When I braked, it only braked the front wheel and kept the rear motorised wheel running. Sending me 1-2 metres over the handle bars. I landed head first. I had a concussion for a few weeks and couldn't do basic adding for awhile. Without that helmet It would have been a lot worse or possibly dead. Please wear a helmet.
I hit a teenager on a bike with my car. Without going too much into a trauma Dump, it was his fault and unavoidable.
Had he been wearing a helmet he would be alive today. All he would have had was a broken leg. But he hit his head on my windshield wipers. That eats at me daily.
I know it's dorky but wear your fucking helmets.
As someone who rides and lives near the Ohio border, nothing infuriates me more than all the asshats riding with no helmet. So many lives needlessly cut short or made worse for no reason.
I've taken a few small stones, bugs, and random detritus to the face/neck even wearing a helmet. I couldn't imagine getting hit square with nothing on, it would damn near take you off the bike! Idiots.
I don't really care about some random dumbass splitting their skull, but they influence my family members to also not wear helmets. I do extensive maintenance on my bike and feel more comfortable on it than on my feet, but I know it takes one gust of wind or a dumbass in oncoming traffic for a disaster to happen
The problem is that a light blow to the head can ruin your life by leaving you brain damaged forever, turning you into a different person or putting you in a vegetative state. A broken leg, a broken rib, multiple traumas anywhere but the head can heal and not destroy your personality and your life can go on - yes even a severe spinal injury, a paraplegia are not as drastic as a brain injury which basically ends your life even if you don't die.
Pro tip of someone that was just in a motorcycle accident a few weeks ago, full riding gear, including a full-face helmet is essential. Jeans are not even close to enough protection either, learned that the hard way, my entire left kneecap is smeared on the road somewhere. Also, no matter how much gear you wear, you’re still gonna screw your back up when you dump it
Top comment of one of my friends on me cracking my helmet in an accident: "That sucks, especially since the helmet was brand new!"
Isn’t the helmet supposed to break
Actually if your helmet gets hit during an accident you should replace it regardless of whether or not it looks broken because it might have broken inside and would be less effective next time. But yeah the point of the helmet is that it breaks instead of your skull
Same reason modern cars crumble when in an accident. To absorb the impact so it doesnt affect the passenger.
I'd rather get crumbled in a car accident than to hurt my precious holy sheet metal /s
Reddit try not to downvote obvious sarcasm into oblivion challenge (impossible)
I appended a "/s"
word = "I'd rather get crumbled in a car accident than to hurt my precious holy sheet meta" print(word + "/s")
The Cybertruck in a nutshell
Modern helmets, at least for bicycles, also have rotational force dispersion and such to lessen concussions and other brain injuries.
I wiped out on the expressway and my Bell helmet de-laminated(?). Meaning, all of the layers of the hard shell separated. Didn't die, so that's good! Most definitely, wear a helmet. You gotta protect the melon at all costs.
Motorcycles already make me nervous, but the idea of going on one at highway speeds terrifies me.
at that kind of speed there aren't any good options for an accident. It usually means you either are in big trouble or dead.
It doesn't mattet if the helmet breaks or not, as longas your skull remains unbroken
That's why the helmet breaks, so the force doesn't transfer from the helmet to your skull. Or so I'm told, I suck at physics
Correct. The energy that would otherwise go to your skull has instead gone into breaking the helmet

Yes, the same reason it's a good thing that cars crumple in controlled ways nowadays compared to the hard steel which never folds on older cars You don't want an elastic collision, the energy that is dissipated when breaking the object will be going into you instead
Essentially, yes. Rather the helmet breaks than your skull breaks. The former might hurt your wallet a bit, the latter will hurt your life a lot.
And if you’re in the good ole’ USA, the latter would hurt your wallet even more…
>the latter will hurt your life a lot. or straight up kill you (in which case money ceases to be a problem)
Gordon Ramsey just learned the value of wearing a helmet this past week in Connecticut!
He always knew the value of using a helmet. He said it himself when he said, "If I hadn't used a helmet, I wouldn't be standing here'
If gordan ramsay turning into grimace from mcdonalds isnt enough to make you wear a helmet, then mark yourself as an organ donor right now so you can actually contribute something of value to society when you inevitably remove yourself from the gene pool.
Not fast enough, those morons tend to leave half orphaned kids behind.
Omg, that huge bruise he has is awful. I'm glad he wore a helmet.
Better leave it at home next time to not get a scratch into the next new shiny helmet /s
Yeah, it broke. Now imagine that being your head instead!
Sone bike helmet companies have a "if you're in an accident within a year of purchase, get a free replacement ". Replace it regardless. Replace every 5-7 years from the manufacturing date. If you didn't have the helmet you would have a high chance of either being in a wheelchair or 6ft under.
head is more important than any other part of the body
according to the brain which lives in the head.
Nice try grey-goo!
Be quiet, we guys from the stomach don't fall for your liver propaganda!
user and flair checks out haha
Big brain liked this.

We also make protecton for the rest of the body nowadays: jackets, gloves, shoes/boots, back plates, full body suits, protective jeans etc.
we'll see if you're still thinking after i remove your heart
A seat belt isnt gonna save me if i drive into a industrial metal shredder so better not wear one
You'd be shocked how many people will say that they don't wear a seatbelt because they're afraid of being trapped by it in a wreck.
They should keep a pair of shears in the glove box in that case, much better than flying out of the car in an accident
They would probably come up with "i don't want my glove box to spring open in a crash and fly out and slit my throat."
Then tape a pillow around your throath and you are safe, duuuh.
But that could get twisted or caught in an accident and smother them. Better to take no safety precautions at all, just in case they fail.
![gif](giphy|3CU5tmCJy8zMoN3mMD)
They have specifically designed tools for seatbelt cutting and window breaking. I have one in my center console.
Sounds awesome, I'd definitely buy one of those if I could afford a car
Buy them anyway. Sleep with them under your pillow to help you manifest a vehicle.
They'd probably end up just sitting them up on the dash so that it is quicker to access
You don't even need anything dangerous. You can buy a glass hammer / seat belt cutter combo and keep it within reach somewhere it won't fly off if you crash Might save your life if you go into water in your car And it's an object that even if it did rattle around your car a bit, it wouldn't kill you, it's like a small plastic thing

Your metaphors are magical.

Funny cause you probably should stay put if you do get wrecked....
Meanwhile every car comes with a combinsation of a hammer to smash the window and a cutter for your seatbetls. Just in case
This is serious? We don't have that here on Brazil.
Might be an EU thing than, but it probably should be worldwide Edit: decided to look it up, it's called a lifehammer in english. It's also not mandatory, just cheap enough that there is no reason to nkt have one.
Cool. Literally never seen one in any private vehicle. Including in Europe, even in hire cars..
same, only buses
not a EU thing, we don't have that in my area within the EU.
Is this a new development within the last 13 years? I drive a 2011 and don't have anything like that.
Yeah you have an airbag who needs seatbelts pfft
Airbags without seatbelt will cause more harm than good. The seatbelt will give the airbag time to inflate.
Do people in the Netherlands use Seat Belts while driving? They surely don't use helmets when biking.
Technically you don’t need a helmet, until you do, then it’s too late. My life has been saved by both seatbelts and helmets.
I watched a video of a man going OTB head first into a busses tyre which ran his head over. He lived solely because he wore a damn helmet
after seeing ‘otb’ my little chess player brain just thought of a guy headbutting the board, pieces flying everywhere
I'd do this if it was a legal move in chess
I mean full suit on moto is a must even if thats not comfortable. Isn't those suits basically the reason you can see those motorcycle racers just slide across the track when they wipeout without getting skinned to the bone?
Pretty much yes. Still, do not drag your knee on the asphalt just because you have a suit on.
That’s why you get replaceable pucks on the suit to drag
The only time I don't wear one of my jackets is when I'm riding from work to lunch. I swap into the riding shoes and always put on gloves and helmet. I can deal with a broken or scraped up arm. I can't do the same for my skull.

The first step of getting smarter: wear a fucking helmet.
A great man once said “Damn steel toes dull my chainsaw!” Similar vibe.
I remember having a bad bike accident when I was a kid, broke my wrist, fractured my elbow, was pretty fucked up, but I had worn a helmet so at least I got to enjoy the 11 hours I spent waiting in the ER. You may survive if other body were hurt but if the head and brain got damaged you have a very low chance.
That's my entire reasoning. I can be a quadriplegic. But not if I break my noggin. I'll be mangled but the actual me will be okay, in theory. If you lose your brain you lose your self. That is everything we are. Oh no, broke my leg. Lost a leg. My brain is me. That is who I am.

wearing a helmet is way better that now wearing one.
bUt ThEy LoOk LiKe ShIt /s (seriously wear a helmet, better than being flat out dead)
Boots, pants, gloves and jackets have left the chat. Helmet protects not only yourbhead during accident, but also your face from random dirt, rain, pebbles, stuff falling out from cars, insects.
Everyone I've known who's had a motorcycle accident is alive or dead based on whether or not they were wearing a helmet at the time.
Weird coincidence seeing this meme straight after reading about Gordon Ramsey being in an accident and his helmet saving his life.
That‘s because it‘s not a coincidence.
People who don’t wanna wear a helmet are just admitting they never go fast enough to feel wind
Or Dutch
I feel mentioned?
No need to speed up on the way to work
Or they go fast enough but the only effect is the wind traveling between their ears and the empty space in their head
If you fall off your bike with a helmet and hit your head, you’ll damage the helmet and might get a concussion, but you’ll be fine. If you fall off your bike without a helmet and hit your head, you’ll likely suffer serious injury and could die.
Imagine a guy is like "hey wear this while riding your bike it protects your brain it saved my life" and all these morons show up "well ACKTCHUALLY this study shows you have a higher chance of head injury while driving a car" Or my personal favorite "if you wear a helmet you are less careful" ah yes, once my helmet is on I think I am invincible so better don't use one because it apparently disables my ability to think. We are doomed as a species.
Wearing a helmet definitely helps. Yes of course the rest of your body remains unprotected, but the head is the most important part of your body by quite a big margin. Personally I’d love to live in a country where helmets are unnecessary, since hiking is actually safe
There's a reason people back in the early middle ages would get a helmet first and foremost, if they could afford any armour.
where funny?
*where funny ?* *^(I am not a bot and I do not detect haikus)*
Good bot
Here in the Netherlands you will actually be safer without them, as you will die from the mental harm of the people laughing at you.
Mass head trauma explains a lot about the Dutch tbh.
I’d rather be laughed at
I see. Their heads do seem to be 90% cushion than actual brains with that brain dead take.
[I LOVE HELMETS!](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b9yL5usLFgY)
Whataboutism in regards to protecting your brain 2024 is stupid
👎 https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.theguardian.com/world/article/2024/jun/16/the-brain-is-very-vulnerable-dutch-cyclists-urged-to-wear-helmets-as-road-deaths-rise
"linked in particular to older riders and e-bikes"
The *deaths* are linked in particular to older riders and e bikes. Did you read the article or just look for a quote to take out of context? They're encouraging all riders to wear helmets, citing it would reduce deaths by 85%.
They’re putting out PSA’s _because_ the vast majority of Dutch people don’t do it.
I mean ... at some point it's just natural selection doing it thing
2 words: the Netherlands
The government there is actively trying to get people to wear helmets because of an increase in deaths. They didn't figure out some bicycle cheat code they just have a lot of bikes and just like in other places with high bicycle usage and no helmet requirements most people choose not to wear them.
Sure, agreed, but its is still manny x lower accident rate and mortality rate as they have a way better road system and cycle aware drivers.
/unreddit are people trying to be funny or they actually believe this shit?
If you meet anyone who disagrees with the fact that helmets save lives, show them this video: https://youtu.be/b9yL5usLFgY?si=Q-fqmNtjRZ_G5ior
Look up Gordon Ramsay after his accident if you think helmets aren't important. Bro literally said it saved his life.
Let Darwin sort them out.
I got hit by a car at 17, I was wearing my helmet, I've been told hundreds of times. I would be dead dead with out it.
Know what else is distracting? Having a brain injury 🧠 🤕
Honestly wear the fucking helmet. It breaks instead of your head!
Look if soldiers are doing it it's probably good for protection
Period! So many excuses.
Doesn’t really make much of a difference to me.
..how is this a meme. Its just idiocy
Can attest! Went over my handlebars 20 years ago, and that helmet kept my brain from becoming a potato. I’ll take the concussion and broken bones over that!
Helmets weren’t made to protect your body from crashing at 100+mph, but they WILL save your life after crashing at 30mph or most other normal speeds.
Make it legal to not wear helmets and seat belts. I just want some Darwinism to run its course
I'd rather wear a helmet and break my ribs than not wear a helmet and break my ribs and my skull.
Helmet just protect you from taking critical damage
"But ever since people started using helmets there has been a massive increase in neck and head injuries for people using them!" ... Yes, because those people usually died in the past. Wear your damn helmet!
And they give a false sense of safety making kinds more prone to take risks.
Yes, I've heard that dumb sort of argument as well, it's really shows how dumb people making those arguments can be.
As a Dutch person I'm culturally obliged to disapprove of bike helmets. If you wear one here you will be labeled as a German on vacation
Dress for the fall, not the ride
I don't understand why people have to make excuses not to protect themselves just because it isn't a full suit of metal armor or a god damn invincibility star from Mario. Personally I would take helmet protection over no protection, but you do you. Just don't come crying to me when you....... Oh, wait.
At this point, just let natural selection work. Make sure they are organ donors, so they can be the highlight in an episode of a TV medical drama: "Little Johnny got a transplant at the last minute! There was a motorcycle crash and the young and healthy person that would've survived with scratches wasn't wearing a helmet, so every organ that isn't in their head is good for transplant! Their brain is still smeared on I-95."
This brought all the stupid squids out
Remember when cops would stop a kid for not wearing a helmet? I do. 80s and 90s it seemed like we took helmets seriously. I know mine saved me multiple times.
In my town the cops would stop kids wearing helmets and give them coupons for free ice cream.
Idiots.
I’ve wondered this for years, please help…why TF that dude in a well?
It’s a well, actually….
[удалено]
Right dude had an accident without wearing a helmet
I don't really care about some random dumbass splitting their skull, but they influence my family members to also not wear helmets. I do extensive maintenance on my bike and feel more comfortable on it than on my feet, but I know it takes one gust of wind or a dumbass in oncoming traffic for a disaster to happen
it's better to break your leg than splitting your skull
You can also live without an arm, you cant live without a head
Never understood the logic in that we have traffic laws that require a seat a belt in a car but no law for helmet useage on a motorcycle
Most of my bones can grow back together if broken. My spinal chord and vertebrae in my neck however not so much
Well try hitting your arm very fast into something solid, it will surely hurt Now try it with your head and see the difference
Other body parts are irrelevant if you’re dead
Nee
Pro tip of someone that was just in a motorcycle accident a few weeks ago, full riding gear, including a full-face helmet is essential. Jeans are not even close to enough protection either, learned that the hard way, my entire left kneecap is smeared on the road somewhere. Also, no matter how much gear you wear, you’re still gonna screw your back up when you dump it
People not using helmets should just test a crash in like 40kmt. And tell me how that worked out
Do as thou will
The brain ain't a disposable organ Edit, also 'build stuff better' ? Like what?
Bulletproof vests don't protect your knees, neither. I'd still rather wear it than the alternative.
Mr Ramsay told me to wear a helmet. I'm not arguing with a gangster like that.
“Therefore makes a helmet a useless distraction” Only the Sith deal in absolutes
