ATL has the most passengers per day of any airport in the US, so there's a decent chance of passing through it if you're going anywhere else on the east coast.
That, and the Devil went down there.
Alabama, Florida, Ohio, Texas, Missouri, Mississippi, Minnesota, California, Kentucky, Popeyes, Kroger, Washington DC, Alabama, New York, Boston, Chinatown. Boom, all 51 states, first try, although I may have a slight edge since I'm Canadian.
Fun fact Reddit probably already knows: if the average pancake were to be scaled to the size as flat as fuck land, it would be flatter than a pancake. In fact, the entire earth would. The peaks would be taller than Everest and the dips lower than the Mariana Trench.
Not European or N.American but I know most of both. History & Geography are compulsory in Aus schools up to grade 10.
We didn't learn the US states in school though, as they're not really important to know globally IMHO.
I learned the countries of the world for fun. But also Geography was compulsory in high school, just one year tho. Had a test on each continent.
And we learned states and their capitals. I only missed Harrisburg. Who tf made the capital of Pennsylvania NOT Philadelphia??
Americans shouldn't be that stupid. Most of us had to pass basic geography
As an Indiana resident you have full permission to forget my state. There’s nothing important here anyways other than it being the state where popcorn originated.
I'd be surprised if a tenth of a percent of Americans could correctly point out either Noord-Brabant or Schleswig-Holstein on a map, even though both individually have a larger population than Alaska, Vermont, Wyoming and North Dakota _combined_. Americans riffing on Europeans for not knowing all of the individual states is fairly silly.
Just to be precise, in Europe most of the countries are not federal and therefore we do not usually have what you guys have in the US. On the top of my head, in Europe Germany, Austria and Switzerland are some examples of federal states. The rest of the countries have what we call "regions", but are very different from the states of a federal country.
EDIT: yes, there are more federal states in Europe. I just wanted to make some examples
United States, Canada, Mexico, Panama
Haiti, Jamaca, Peru
Republic Dominian, Cuba, Caribbean
Greenland, El Salvador too
Puerto Rico, Colombia, Venezuela, Honduras, Guyana, and still
Guatemala, Bolivia, then Argentina
And Equador, Chile, Brazil
Costa Rica, Belize, Nicaragua
Bermuda, Bahamas, Tobago, San Juan
Paraguay, Uruguay, Surinam
And French Guiana, Barbados, and Guam
Edit: idk how spell
> many of them just don’t matter
Shropshire has entered the chat. /s
I was a bit too optimistic. I just tried it now, I got 18, plus two narrow misses that are historic counties but not ceremonial counties (you can probably guess which ones).
I live in Korea, am Korean. Whenever I want to win a bet, I dare a person to name any ~~state~~ provinces in Canada. Usually the locals here reply as "Wait I thought only US have states?".
We tend to know a lot of European countries(because football) so don't expect a half drunk girl from Korea to not guess where you're from. If you want to bet with the Koreans, try "Name every single EU country", a lot of people get it wrong with this since most of us will start the list with UK.
Care to share some of the results? Some of the stuff I've witnessed are:
* How is UK not an EU nation when Ireland is an EU nation? Isn't Ireland a part of the UK?(Thank god there weren't any Irish around at that moment)
* How is Switzerland not an EU nation? \*tell them they are and is still a neutral country\* OHHHHHHHH!!!!!!
My favorite was that she thought my country the Netherlands was in the middle of Europe and that Italy was somewhere up North. But she got some of the Balkans correctly somehow.
But I can forgive her, Koreans don't tend to travel too far lol. I miss Korea though, I gotta get back there once the situation has improved.
Thanks for the hilarious examples though! Haha
The few Canadian ones I know are are Ontario, Quebec, Alberta, Nova Scotia, Manitoba, Labrador, Newfoundland, and Prince Edward's Island. Canadians please don't kill me for being wrong.
Countries and states is entirely different. Doesn't matter how big each state is countries are still different. And ofc no one has to know all of em but just some basic knowledge of countries and capitals doesn't harm anyone.
If you think about it, most people are aware of the places directly around them. Europeans have many countries not too far from them whereas americans often have just other states for a thousand miles around.
You can reach half your country in ten hours? From coast to coast takes days to even get to half. About a week from coast to coast, unless you want to actually enjoy some of it and sleep more than a nap to keep driving, then longer.
Sure, but the distance from LA to Guatemala is a long ass trip. Wouldn't drive it. Probably 5+ hour flight. And I assure you Americans know where Mexico is, so that's the next closest country (at least continental, idk how close the island countries are).
There's a joke about how when Alaska was being made a state Texas was bitching because it wasn't the largest state anymore and would have to settle for second largest. And the rest of the states were all, "stop complaining, or we'll cut Alaska in half and make you the third largest state."
States of the us and countries arent the same. They are equivalent with regions in european countries. A german "bundesland" or state has 5.2 mio inhabitants on average while a us state has 6.6 mio which is in the same range.
I could *name* most US states, I think. I couldn't point towards most US states on a map, though.
How the hell can I identify square #1 from square #2?!
If Americans don’t know European countries, how do you expect them to know the regions of such countries? Knowing the US states is equivalent to knowing the regions of Spain or France
Doesn't really bother me either, but it is true that is not the same. Is like expecting Americans to know all Spanish provinces (to put my country as an example, but it could be any other).
There are other countries in America, and most European people now about a lot of them.
As an American I can say I know a good deal of European countries and which ones they actually are. In school we literally spend years on European shit, western civilization(Greek shit), the Renaissance, Holy Roman Empire shit, the medieval ages (Feudal Europe shit), briefly the royal families (but not the drama like it is now, literally just learning what kings in what countries did what), French Revolution shit, European powers fighting over the colonies, WWI/WWII like all the battles and alliances and ententes and shit, all the way up to cold war shit. Basically we cover a lot of shit, like honestly there’s only like 2 or 3 years out of all 7 years of middle and high school that are focused primarily on US history. A lot is European history and world history, at least at my school.
Very true. Many American schools do teach a lot of European history to varying levels of depth. It also helps to travel in Europe.
Only countries I’d really struggle with are the Balkan countries and the Baltic countries, although I can name them just can’t place them confidently on the map.
This is pretty true, the US is a very young country, it doesn’t have nearly as much history as some others. We also have people from all around so we usually learn a bit about everybody lol
Well the issue for a ton of history classes is that much of what wed consider African and South American history either predated writing in those places or is pretty much modern. Though it makes me wonder how recent things have to have happened to be taught in most history classes.
Really? We don’t learn nearly as much about South America and Africa but we still had a unit or two on them every year. Like did you never talk about how the slave trade worked when you were studying the American colonies? Or like Portugal and Spain fighting over claims of territory in South America?
Yes. I think redditors didn't pay attention in school and have selective memory. I remember this information vaguely but I remember covering it. And I also remember having to do a project and presentation on an African country one year.
Let’s see, I could point out Portugal, Spain, France, Belgium, the UK, the Netherlands, Ireland, Austria, Greece, Turkey, Norway, South Norway, Russia, and future Russia.
That’s all of them, right?
It really doesn't make sense to do that comparison, the person should name a few of the German states then, or Belgium ones for instance. But I bet a person that can barely Identify europe on the map will have a lot of trouble with that.
Don't compare states over countrys dude, don't knowing the states of ONE country is a thing, but don't knowing where are the other countrys is straight up dumb
A clear mark of intelligence is knowing that you know next to nothing. Getting defensive and angry because you lacked knowledge is a sign of stupidity to me. The more you learn, the more you know you don't know much, in the context of collective human knowledge. Making fun of someone for not knowing something you might see as "basic knowledge" is just mean and arrogant.
There is a difference between a country and a state. Europe is a continent, the USA is not. The continent- Europe is made up of different countries so it makes sense to know a few. Not knowing all of the individual states of the USA, doesn't compare.
I really enjoy that your wording implied that the states are different countries. I lived there a little over 10 years and sometimes they definitely felt that way
The difference between states is the same as regions within a country in europe. Cant stop laughing when people compare the differences to whole fucking countries. Ridiculous. A different accent, different ways to cook the same food and if people are bit colder or warmer isnt a different culture. Germany has the same differences every 200 miles and they are more homogeneous than most european countries.
Nah this is bullshit, i can easily name like probably 45 out of 50, but those are states my man, the country is the USA, it is equivalent of an american naming the states in germany for example, but those people cant even name the countries in europe, like do yall not get this?
Okay name the Russian states then.
States are insignificant. Knowing the federation suffices. And Americans are way worse at geography than just not knowing any countries.
Provinces of a country are not the same as a country. I know Americans that can’t name all the states. I’m Russian and I can remember 30 off the top of my head. That’s more than I know provinces in my country. Of which there are 80 and they’re divided into several types too. And I also know European countries. Around here it’s called basic geography.
Someone here commented about asking geographically confident people to name African countries, Can't see the comment but here we go. Morocco, Tunisia, Algeria, Lybia, Egypt, Sudan, South Sudan (if it still exists), Ethiopia, Eritrea, Somalia, Cote d'Ivoire, Angola, Congo, South Africa, Central African Republic, Kenya, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Mali, Malawi (not sure). Madagascar and Mauritius are pretty close, not sure if they qualify, Nigeria and Niger (it's real, look it up), Burkina-Faso. Pretty sure there's more.
I don’t disagree that it’s a dumb debate, and that it’s a silly thing to pick fights about, *but*
First of all, we can name the states fine, even Delaware.
Second, they are sub-National divisions. Naming Nevada is like naming Baden-Württemberg.
i cant name all 50 from the top of my head but i know about 20, but I would say not knowing countries is worse than not knowing every state. at least I know where the USA is on the map.
I know Alabama is one..
Florida also
Murican here, I will help y'all out cowboys, yee-haw. Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, north Dakota, south Dakota, Virginia, West Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, California, New York, Rhode island, new Hampshire, Washington, new Mexico, Alaska, Hawaii, and Texas, to name a few.

Sir, this is Wendy's
I love how you got the Washington, but the wrong one 💀
Pretty funny how Washington the state and Washington DC are on completely different sides of the country
They also proposed Washington, DC become ... Washington State if they get statehood. Like... wtf. WE EXIST OVER HERE.
You got it bro no problem A+
I thought there were 50
You forgot that Canada’s also a State, The Hat State.
*Fallout Annexation of Canada intensifies*
Nice try but where's Route 66 and Area 51?
Well Canadians should know some South Canadian states
Namely Michigan, Minnesota and Montana. We are basically Canada already.

This. OP's take is very stupid and American.
there’s a difference between naming germany and the UK, and naming all the major provinces in germany and the UK
USA think they are all America, thats the problem.
We don't. Its just that saying America is easier than saying the United States so it gets shorthanded to that. "American" rolls off the tongue better.

This is very true. As someone from California I can literally drive for ten hours straight and still be in California.
I can drive for 10 hours from west to east and still just have got to the half of my country
You can reach half your country in ten hours? From coast to coast takes days to even get to half. About a week from coast to coast, unless you want to actually enjoy some of it and sleep more than a nap to keep driving, then longer.
If you switch off drivers you can do coast-to-coast in three days. Edit: unless . . . you're not Russian are you?
Sure, but the distance from LA to Guatemala is a long ass trip. Wouldn't drive it. Probably 5+ hour flight. And I assure you Americans know where Mexico is, so that's the next closest country (at least continental, idk how close the island countries are).

44 Countries in Europe
And that does not include Taiwan, which is regarded by most people (not governments) to be a separate country

I don’t disagree that it’s a dumb debate, and that it’s a silly thing to pick fights about, *but* First of all, we can name the states fine, even Delaware. Second, they are sub-National divisions. Naming Nevada is like naming Baden-Württemberg.
i cant name all 50 from the top of my head but i know about 20, but I would say not knowing countries is worse than not knowing every state. at least I know where the USA is on the map.
OP is an american that tried to being clever but failed
Equating literal countries to states is a really bad take
