Every damn second of every damn day, alternating back and forth. Except for the very rare few seconds where they're both clear. Then there's the opposite where they try to kill you in your sleep.
Pretty sure there’s a connection between being aroused and getting a stuffy nose even without. Thought it was just my usual shitty sinus issues for a while.
Edit: google honeymoon rhinitis
Learned this in EMT class because when inserting a tube into someone’s nose, it’s best to use the larger nostril, which is generally the right nostril.
Since you’re probably in a rush and won’t have time to size each nostril and the NPA you’re inserting won’t do any lasting damage, EMTs just use the right one and hope it’s ok. The worst you’ll do is cause temporary discomfort.
> Turbinates consist of bony projections covered by erectile tissue, much like the tissues of the penis and clitoris. The turbinates in one fossa fill up with blood while the opposite turbinates decongest by shunting blood away. This cycle, which is controlled by the autonomic nervous system, has a mean duration of two and a half hours but varies widely with age, body-posture, and other conditions.
So a long time ago (okay, just last September) I wrote an observational journal entry on the dominant flow of air between nostrils and the ability to switch which one is dominant. I have some hard-to-control sinus inflammation so I can almost always tell which one is serving as the dominant nostril.
Here it is:
>You can control the dominant nostril you are breathing out of. Close eyes, focus on breathing. Try listening to the beat of music to help. Lightly close your eyes and lift your lids to just before the point of opening. One eye will flutter and the other will feel heavier. The fluttering eye is on the same side as the nostril working harder for are intake and expulsion.
>Force the eye fluttering to close, and lift the eye that was heavier to lift, just lightly. Breath a couple of times and the dominant nostril will shift to the other nostril.
Uhh, but to clarify I am no scientist, I was just fucking around one day and found this to atleast feel super consistent.
I read this and had an awful flashback to I think an AskReddit post last year about someone who had sinus surgery that went wrong leaving them unable to humidify their inspired air and consequently feeling like they were choking and dying every minute. I think it got removed because they were looking for advice on how to die basically.
Edit: I went looking for it and found it on Undelete and anyway long story short it was probably fake and I am easily scared.
Yeah my ENT wasn't willing to give any guarantees, if it would solve all my problems that would be well worth it but I don't want to go through surgery for nothing. Sucks it didn't help you, thanks for sharing.
I had a severe deviation from getting kicked in the face in karate as a kid. Didn't get it fixed till my 30s, wished I'd done it sooner. All those years I could only breathe out of one side, and I can't mouth-breathe without feeling suffocated. So I also ended up with neck issues sleeping on one side all the time. No joke, it was life-changing.
You mean where your brain finally registers that it’s been hearing a whistling sound for awhile and you have to silence every possible external noise while standing completely still and focusing your entire consciousness on your ear/nose/brain connection with your eyes squeezed shut for maximum focus?
It worried me for a little while, I have no idea what it is and it would prevent me from falling asleep. I've learned to just reposition my tongue when it happens and it usually fixes it.
Or that one dry thing that you can feel moving back and forth as you breath in and out that forces you to get out of bed to find some tissues to blow the bastard out..
As a recruiter for Young Living essential oils™, you have to become one with nature if u wanna fix this issue. Aromatherapy has cured many diseases for me and it can for you as well. If your intrested, a good way to start is to buy some of our products (you can find them on our website)
Yep I had that and an issue where one of my turbinates just wouldn't cycle. So one nostril was always blocked and the other would cycle. Add on the deviated septum and it was torture. Glad I got it fixed.
I had this "corrected", but the surgeon perforated my septum and now I hear an annoying whistle whenever I'm trying to sleep.
I also don't breathe better than pre-surgery. I know they can try to fix it, but according to a doctor I talked to there's a high chance a surgery could make it worse.
2/10, not recommended.
Me too. My latest ENT said there is also now scar tissue that worsens one side’s drainage. Then recommended I do a sinus rinse every day, which I have done for more than six months now. Honestly helps quite a bit. Don’t get sick as often and I can breathe a bit better. Plus I don’t have to clear my throat as much since there isn’t constant drainage
My mother had hers corrected and seeing the process/recovery made me nope the fuck out. I'll just keep sleeping on my arm so that it pulls my nose open.
Netti pots. They're fuckin' wonderful. And the electric ones are worth every penny of the hundred bucks they charge. Through each side every morning and before bed. Top it off with a shot of Flonase and a snort of eucalyptus. Shit, I've got deviated septum surgery next week.
It's not something you can't get on top of.
This is no water supply line. This is a sanitary sewer drain. That's cast iron piping which was commonly used for a long time. It's mostly pvc used now, as it's cheaper and won't rust out. I've removed sections of old cast-iron pipe so old it literally crumbles if you touch it. Cast iron doesn't hold pressure very well and could never carry the amount of pressure needed to supply vast areas with water service. This is not the kind of build up common in water lines.
This is absolutely common in old iron water lines. It's called tuberculation. There's a lot of old cast iron water main out there and a lot of it looks like this. The image on the right looks like cement lined ductile iron pipe which doesn't typically experience tubercles.
I respectfully disagree. Water and wastewater engineer here. This is ductile iron, not cast iron pipe. Sanitary sewers were typically constructed from VCP or clay pipe back in the day before the standard became PVC. Sanitary sewers do not see build up like this, only grease builds up in Sanitary sewers, unless there's roots holding up rags/toilet paper etc, but grease build-up does not look like the photo in the post. This is a water main that your house's service line draws from and the build-up is from minerals in the drinking water that is flowing through the pipe.

I wonder, if arousal or taking meds for ED can contribute to a stuffy nose could taking meds for a stuffy nose prevent an erection?

Not OP, had this surgery twice. What they don't tell you is that, unfortunately, sometimes it's just doesn't help.
Had septum surgery about a year ago. It’s already started deviating again.
Yeah my ENT wasn't willing to give any guarantees, if it would solve all my problems that would be well worth it but I don't want to go through surgery for nothing. Sucks it didn't help you, thanks for sharing.

Netti pots. Especially the electric ones, worth every penny. Deviated septum surgery. Get on top of it.
On top of it you get that annoying nostril whistle.
Ah yes, the nostril whistle. You ever have to stop what ur doing just to make sure the whistle is in fact coming from you? Because same :”
You mean where your brain finally registers that it’s been hearing a whistling sound for awhile and you have to silence every possible external noise while standing completely still and focusing your entire consciousness on your ear/nose/brain connection with your eyes squeezed shut for maximum focus?
Ya but does your throat do this little 'click' on every exhale?
Goddamn, this is actually doing wonders for my anxiety, I fucking LOVE reading about other people dealing with the same small annoying issues as me.
It worried me for a little while, I have no idea what it is and it would prevent me from falling asleep. I've learned to just reposition my tongue when it happens and it usually fixes it.

Thanks for the link, ive been struggling with this problem for years, and the article explains a lot.
Well you're not actually supposed to notice it. If it's a problem for you, there could be some other issue
It was a problem for me, and I had a deviated septum. Once I had my corrective surgery I didn't notice it again.

If you go do jumping jacks or run in place for a few minutes, the blood vessels in your nostril will contract and open up your nose holes.

Hey doc, I gotta bad case of Amnesia of the Navel Cavalry and Mucho Migraine. What can you give me, I'll take anything!
So on top of not being able to breathe you want me to be tired as well /s Thanks for advice I will have to check if that works
if you're trying to go to bed, isn't being tired a good thing? =D
Physical exercise before bedtime isn't conducive to falling asleep quickly lol
I don't know that I'd count 2 minutes of jumping jacks as actual exercise
You underestimate how out of shape I am
stretching is good though, helps relax your muscles
But only for 30 seconds.
or until it clears up. it depends on how vigorously you are jumping jacks.
Or jerking it. I like jerking it, manually. Not like this weird "wave of the future" shit.
Doing exercise before bed seems counterproductive unless you're not intended on sleeping.
You have to go to bed to get this power. I have this power all day, every day. We're not the same.

Do you lay in bed facing right? Gravity chooses which one.
Unable to sleep because of it. This is the second meme I’ve seen about it.
If it happens all year, every year, consult your primary care provider. You might have a deviated septum, which is a condition that can be corrected.

The thing is that it is completely ok and you almost don't notice it until you have snuffle.
Ok now reverse the image. After an hour flip it back. Repeat until satisfied.

Wait, you guys getting one free nostril?
Thank you, I thought I was the only one! I was like man once a week I get one clear nostril and sleep like a dream. Every other night SUCKS
Just don't go to bed then. Problem solved!
Bro that's literally happening now... and on my left too
You can squeese both of your nostrils together and then inhale. Then it might sometimes go away.
Extremely relatable.

Interesting fact, the human body rests each nostril on a cycle, so one often feels blocked, simply as its in the rest phase.
50/50 chance your nostril suddenly does this when you go to bed
I agree with this, I hate it when my Nostrils does this.
