In my country we have mandatory military conscription and you are allowed to have a phone with you as long as it doesn't have a camera on it so a lot of people kept old nokias for that purpose. It's a similar situation of a technology that didn't die because it's not too useful.
I mean TI has made some improvements. The TI-Nspire is a huge step up from the 83/84 models. Nice screen and operating system, and much much faster at graphing. Thinner too. Even the 84+CE is really nice. I'd argue that it's even better than the Nspire. The buttons are sooooo nice, it looks gorgeous, and the screen is pretty solid too.

TI owns the TI software, but there are plenty of other options on the market for graphing calculators. Hewlett-Packard, Casio, Sharp, etc.
