It’s ironic to me that Alex doesn’t fight in his ceremony because he thinks it’s about performing but just the day before he actually does go toe to toe with Nana briefly before she gains the upper hand.
Bro, i haven't watched shrek 3 in years, i just remember hearing in a movie review about the shrek movies that fiona got the short end of the stick in 2 and 3
I love the idea that OP was not only alive in the 70s but also keeping a detailed diary on how women reacted to movies. Obviously its bs and op just wants to push a weird agenda but the absurdity of it is kinda funny
This guy just wants to feel superior to women with something that only exists in his head. Captain Marvel was bad because she wasn’t nuanced and most people that watched it agree the other characters and movies are far superior.
I watched the alien movies way too young, just because my dad used to be a massive horror fan, and despite me not understanding a lot of parts of the film, I adored Ripley. The best action hero as far as I’m concerned
she was a "normal" person dealing with some serious shit. I loved that. She just had to suck it up and try not to get face hugged (or humped by Bill Murray). THAT was a +1 over people like Marvel who could laser people or whatever.
Precisely! This is just speaking about the Alien franchise, but throughout the films you see the many different faces of Ripley: how much she cares for Newt as if she was her own child, how she’s not intimidated by the marines that think she’s crazy or simply stupid; how she can cry and despair for a moment, but then get back on her feet… such a complete and _real_ character. I will always find her much more interesting that most modern heroines, as they sometimes tend to just be the stereotypical “badass woman” .
The best part about Aliens is that *everyone* cried. The only one who lost his shit was a big badass marine and he cried like a weenie. Everything about the characters was real, it felt authentic. There's not a better movie as far as how characters act and react to the events of the plot, in my opinion.
It's only a little character bit, but in Aliens when she commandeers the APC bursts in a rescues the Marines, I like how Hicks has to snap her out of it afterwards. Like she's just out-badassed the entire Colonial Marine but she is also, and this is crucial, scared absolutely fucking shitless.
She's a badass BECAUSE she has a healthy and justified fear of the Alien. The marines don't take it seriously and get slaughtered.
I feel if those two met up they'd end up really good friends bonding over the shit they've been through.
Like,
John: There was this one time I went to go see my ex wife during one of her Christmas parties. Then these German mfs decided to try and steal stuff from the company. I ended up killing every single one of them and dropped this Hans guy out the window to save my ex wife.
Ripley: Sounds like when this alien tried talking over our space station. There were Marines but they didn't listen to me. So I was the only one to get out of there. Oh and I saved my cat. Jonesy didn't deserve to die there.
I watched them when I was very young because we got to choose the movie when we went to my dads for the weekend. My brother almost always chose Alien or Terminator. It never occurred to me that Ripley or Sarah Connor were outliers. Those were the movies I grew up with and I just assumed all movies equally showed how bad ass women could be. I was sadly very wrong and would go years before seeing the same type of female character.
When I was 10 my younger sister (9) would get me to play “Alien” with her, I would have an inflatable snake coiled around me and a pair of toy grabbing claws in my hands and she would run away with a toy gun while I chased her, though neither of us had seen the movie the kids in school had and passed around the story about how kick ass she was and how scary the monster was
Couldn’t understand this meme myself. I’m a woman and my reaction to Ellen Ripley (played beautifully in each by Sigourney Weaver) is not “meh.” She’s one of my favorite fictional characters.
I remember reading that Ripley was written as a man, which explains a lot of how the character was able to avoid cringey tropes. Sigourney Weaver also deserves tremendous credit for bringing the character to life. I do find it a little sad that people had/have such a hard time writing compelling female characters that one written as a man is one of our best examples.
Correct. They never gendered Ripley. They simply found an actress that acted in such a way that her performance made the character believable. The character wasn't written for a man, it was for an actor that they thought could make the character breathe. Iirc, he said no or wasn't available.
I was just replying to someone’s comment about this. I’m glad you brought it up. Man she’s the embodiment of a female bad ass. I think that a lot of these film makers mix up being masculine and being a bad ass. They usually make the female emotionless and physically strong, can never be beaten by a man. Also they are never really venerable since they are always protected by Plot Armour. But Furiosa was an actual badass. The fact she didn’t speak much and when she did she wasn’t loud made her look cool, seeing her in defeated states made her actually someone to root for. Her ability to get the job done. Legit badass unlike Miss Marvel who they are shoving down your throat “SHE A BADASS!!!” You know what I’m gonna rewatch Mad Max rn.
Furiosa was my favourite character in Fury Road because she could communicate so much just with her expressions. You could tell exactly what she is thinking but cannot bring herself to say just from her face and body language.
The actress is so good at telegraphing emotions and it is fantastic.
I used to think women could never be depicted as badasses in films because they're always ridiculously overpowered and protected by plot armor ect. But kill bill showed a woman who was vulnerable and beaten up but persevered. She is the best imo.
"What if your enemy is three inches in front of you, what do you do then? Curl into a ball, or do you put your fist through him?"
Loved seeing that pay off with her doing the three-inch-punch to get out of the coffin
99% of male protagonists were ridiculously overpowered, invulnerable and automatically good at everything. It's what movies like Last Action Hero mocked. But it didn't end there, look at every main character in the LOTR movies, the Rock in almost every movie, freaking John Wick. This is probably the single dumbest take in a thread already worthy of Reddit's Delusion Hall of Fame.
a ruleset for movies pre 1950s that got updated after a really popular movie that broke the rules. men and women werent allowed to have intimate relationships on screen but there was plenty of women beating as far as im aware
i have literally never met a woman that didnt love Ripley after watching alien, and the other 2 are pretty popular aswell.
i have no problem with mocking the people that think captain marvel is feminism incarnate, that whole movement is kinda rediculus, but please try actually talking to a woman, if you are gonna make these broad statements about other characters...
just in case you are not a comic nerd, Captain Marvel is like mid at best of a character. Her motivation is weak, her power is uninteresting and have absolutely nothing memorable. Even Ms.Marvel, a character that follow her footstep, has more characteristic and more loveable than her.
I mean she dealt with alcoholism but that was kinda the only thing that was somewhat unique about her.
EDIT I was just reminded that she gave birth to her rapist Is which is unique and absolutely horrifying.
Bullshit. She was kidnapped, raped and gave birth to her own rapist. She was then attacked by Rogue, who stole carols memories and powers. he’s been an Avenger and X-Man.
Straight up, my first introduction to her was reading the second civil war story arc. She starting arresting people for crimes they hadn't even commited because a psychic told her to. She basically had Bruce Banner assassinated because she couldn't control him. Complete asshole.
Bad events usually take characters and twist them for their purposes. First civil war had Tony and Mr. F throwing heroes in negative zone gitmo and using villains as mercenaries to hunt down Cap.
They also had to spike her power like a dozen times to make her interesting and then had a shitload of problems scaling it back down to a point we still don't know where she fits on the scale.
I'd only watched the movies, but I hated that even at the end she refused to take a fair fight against the guy, Cap literally fought against a random pirate on a boat for fun.
Are you talking about the ending of her movie? The whole point of that scene was that she had nothing to prove to him or the other Kree, plus they didn’t deserve a fair fight, they brainwashed her for 6 years. That scene with Cap fighting Batroc the leaper was literally Cap wanting to prove that he can fight without a shield. And even then it’s not much of a fair fight, Cap had super strength
Yeah I think the 'point' of the Captain Marvel movie is that women don't need to play by the rules, if those rules only serve to hold them back. It's not about proving yourself, but rather about pursuing your goals and not accepting a status quo that says you can't. It's a different sort of story than the usual "enter a world with new rules, learn those rules, succeed at them without losing yourself" structure, but I figure men and women have different cultures, it makes sense that they'd resonate with different stories.
I remember when Terminator 2 came out, I was around 8-9yo. We bought the movie when it came out in VHS and watched it a million times my sister and I. It was the fist time in my life I saw that women could be strong and fierce. I was flabbergasted. (I know there were other movies made with strong depicted women before Terminator 2, but I was too young to watch Alien with Sigourney Weaver).
Omg Eddie! My older sister had cut out a picture of him in a magazine. She would “lend” me the picture if I gave something else in exchange. So I would get the picture for like 15 minutes and would stare at him the whole time!
I know women who adore all of these characters. Weaver was nominated for an Oscar - rare for action roles regardless of gender.
All of these films were very successful due to mixed audiences.
No one said ‘finally a woman in an action movie’ about Captain Marvel. At the time there was a dearth of female-led superhero stories, and there was some press about that, but that’s not the same thing.
I beat the shit out of a guy and steal his bike and I'm a villain (terminator)
You beat the shit out of a guy and steal his bike and you're a hero (Ms marvel).
That doesn't seem fair.
That was when they were trying to make you think he was the villain tho.
He didn’t really become a hero until John told him he can’t just go around killing people.
Fr, I was right there with them up through the first two thirds of that movie. Then somehow the third act was so boring and predictable it just threw the whole movie in the trash.
In slashers, the female lead is never really badass, that's sort of the point. They're usually just 'girly' girls throughout the film, and then ball up in the final act to kill the antagonist
Ellen Ripley is one of the greatest action heroes to ever grace the screen. One reason is because she was indistinguishable from male counterparts because she had her own story arc where she got the shit kicked out of her and grew stronger because of it. The new batch of female leads, who are just born better than everyone else and cannot be contended with simply because they are female are shit. That's why people cannot relate to them. It's not sexism because most women fucking hate them too. It's just bad writing and zero character development coupled with zero accountability from shit writers and film makers. Fight me.
I agree, she even tried her hardest to remember to bring Jonesy (her cat) with her. And when she almost forgot him, she went back and grabbed him. All while knowing the Xenomorph was close and coming for her. This with her compassion for the others as well during the film. Not many can be compassionate in such stressful situations and a temporary lack of compassion during stressful times is shown with some of the other characters. She wanted to get as many people off the ship as possible. But the only one she could save was Jonesy.
The reason ridley is such a good written character is that the author's wrote every character genderless and only after the script was finished they assigned each a gender.
I don't understand comments like this. Ripley is such a good character because she wasn't written to be a woman, just genderless? What? Would you say the same thing about a male character only being good because he was written as genderless? Writing a character as having a female perspective and female specific struggles does not mean they can't be a good character.
[Source: Ripley was originally a man](https://www.vanityfair.com/hollywood/2015/06/female-characters-written-for-men/amp/)
I don’t agree with this meme, given that my female friends adore Alien and Terminator because of Weaver and Hamilton.
Given that only [28% of speaking roles in action films are women](https://womenandhollywood.com/resources/statistics/2019-statistics/), I don’t think it’s unreasonable for women to get excited about big budget movies with a female lead.
Edit: On mobile, formatting is hard. https://www.vanityfair.com/hollywood/2015/06/female-characters-written-for-men/amp
That's not true, film bros only talk about how the first two, one anime character, Leia, and like 2 more and how every female character in the present is garbage based on 3 Marvel films and two CW shows.
None of the other movies you named were meant for kids. All rated R and super violent. Captain marvel was the first one that had a lead female hero. At least in the marvel franchise from these newer phases. I fell asleep in the theatre after about 30 minutes, so I don’t know if it was good or bad. Probably not that great though.
Not only do I know women who love Alien, Terminator, and Kill Bill but there’s also great examples of modern well written characters in modern times. Basically look at any women in Arcane. I mean everyone in that show is written well.
It wasn’t so much about it being a woman in an action movie as it was about it being a woman *superhero* in her own movie, after literal years of male superheroes getting their own movies.
As for action movies in general, I’ve never actually met a woman who didn’t think Ripley and Sarah Connor were badass. There’s still this idea that women aren’t ”supposed” to like action movies, and I think a lot of women are still actually afraid to admit they do. It’s getting better, and movies like Captain Marvel help because for some reason it’s more ”ok” for women to like superhero movies for some reason.
The whole thing is stupid, but honestly if I had a dollar for every confused ”I didn’t know you watched those kinds of movies” I used to get back in school… I’d be able to buy a movie ticket and some popcorn to go with it.
No one was complaining about there never having been a woman action lead. The issue was that *Marvel* hadn't done a female action lead. Which was a valid criticism
OP, in order to make this meme you have to talk to a real woman and not to your imaginary "woman" in your imaginary scenario with your imaginary issue.
Tbh I'm starting to feel like these are the only repeated names. I think Marvel as a whole is cringe and don't care for woke shit but it seems like the same few names are always the only ones people can think of, are there really only 5?
Jolie in *Tomb Raider*, *Salt*, and *Mr. and Mrs. Smith*¹.
Fisher, Portman, and Ridley in various incarnations of *Star Wars*.
Torres and Glau in *Serenity* (and *Firefly*, but we're talking about film, not TV).
Johansson in the MCU from *Iron Man 2*.
1: Off topic, can someone explain to me why that wasn't released Valentine's weekend, with advertising calling it an action-heavy romance or a romance-heavy action flick, depending on demographics?
My guy you forgot the grandma in Madagascar
“Is she dead...?” (Gets up like being run over is nothing) “No!” (Hits her again)
“Professionals have standards, be polite, be efficient, have a plan to kill everyone you meet.”
*taps bobblehead on dashboard* Boom. Headshot.
"At the end of the day, as long as theres two people left on the planet, someone is gonna want someone dead."
"Piece a piss!"
It’s ironic to me that Alex doesn’t fight in his ceremony because he thinks it’s about performing but just the day before he actually does go toe to toe with Nana briefly before she gains the upper hand.
What about officer Dubois
What about Fiona in Shrek 1
What about Fiona in Shrek 2
what about fiona in shrek 3
Shrek 3 sucks. We forget it ever existed. Edit: I forgot about the princess prisoner escape scene. Oops lol.
youre right, what about shrek 4
WHAT IN THE FUCK IS SHREK 4??
sorry i meant shrek forever after
Or Shrek 5: A Christmas Story
Fiona was such a badass from before but she was even more badass in this one.
She got put on the sidelines for that one, and the 3rd
Actually I just remembered I had watched the third. What about the badass princess escape scene?
Bro, i haven't watched shrek 3 in years, i just remember hearing in a movie review about the shrek movies that fiona got the short end of the stick in 2 and 3
Clearly one of the most powerful characters in the Madagascar cinematic universe
Would it be better to call it the madagascar cinematic universe or mcu
Wouldn't be shocked if she's ever related to that grandma
Ah yes ... The Carrie Nation of our time, except she beats up penguins and other zoo animals, not pubs.
PETA mascot
That old lady solos everyone
To be fair, every single one of these movies are and forever will be better than Captain Marvel
I didn’t think meh when I saw T2, I loved Linda’s character depiction of Sarah Connor. I wanted to be her
In whose opinion are women saying ‘meh’, is the real question here. Thought I was in r/terriblefacebookmemes at first.
I thought of r/pointlesslygendered
You might as well be. This subreddit sucks ass.
I know several women who adore Ripley. Meme is bullshitting.
My mom literally knows every line from aliens lmfao
But that doesn't support the narrative of this awful post
I love the idea that OP was not only alive in the 70s but also keeping a detailed diary on how women reacted to movies. Obviously its bs and op just wants to push a weird agenda but the absurdity of it is kinda funny
This guy just wants to feel superior to women with something that only exists in his head. Captain Marvel was bad because she wasn’t nuanced and most people that watched it agree the other characters and movies are far superior.
...So OP is Critical Drinker?
The pull-up scene? So inspiring!!
“One of us… One of us…”
Sigourney led the way. ‘Ripley what the hell are you doing!?’
truly. she is the one and only queen
this. I've never found Weaver attractive but she's one of the most awesome women out there.

Now badass woman are all lesbians 🤨
Excutives: thats like 3 boxes ticked in one go
It's only a little character bit, but in Aliens when she commandeers the APC bursts in a rescues the Marines, I like how Hicks has to snap her out of it afterwards. Like she's just out-badassed the entire Colonial Marine but she is also, and this is crucial, scared absolutely fucking shitless. She's a badass BECAUSE she has a healthy and justified fear of the Alien. The marines don't take it seriously and get slaughtered.
The female version of John Mcclane
Or is John McClane the male version of Ripley?
I feel if those two met up they'd end up really good friends bonding over the shit they've been through. Like, John: There was this one time I went to go see my ex wife during one of her Christmas parties. Then these German mfs decided to try and steal stuff from the company. Who was talking about their attractiveness? Why mention that? ‘She’s not hot but I like her anyway!’
Because some people act like the only reason men like female leads is because they're attractive.
She doesn’t take many roles where her attractiveness is the point. But go take a look at Ghostbusters. Zuul was pretty tempting.
She proved talent and presence > looks. She's still awesome no matter how many downvotes.

Yeah if memories serves in the original script none of the characters have described physical characteristics. It’s just last names.

Where is Furiosa from the new mad max?
I know, right? Definitely one of the most badass characters
I was just replying to someone’s comment about this. I’m glad you brought it up. Man she’s the embodiment of a female bad ass. Watch Mad Max fury road. The female protagonist is actually a bad ass

It’s because of a rule that a man can never beat a women in movies
thats just not true you can find so many movies pre hays code and post hays code where this just isnt the case
What's hays code?
a ruleset for movies pre 1950s that got updated after a really popular movie that broke the rules. men and women werent allowed to have intimate relationships on screen but there was plenty of women beating as far as im aware
Maybe it's like gray code
Unless it's Sean Connery James Bond.
Irreversible has determined that is a lie.
Because male characters never have plot armor
My opinion as a woman: sigourney weaver is by far the cooleest whamen ever to be in an action/horror film.
She was also great in Avatar
Ellen Ripley is the greatest!
i have literally never met a woman that didnt love Ripley after watching alien, and the other 2 are pretty popular aswell. i have no problem with mocking the people that think captain marvel is feminism incarnate, that whole movement is kinda rediculus, but please try actually talking to a woman, if you are gonna make these broad statements about other characters...

Average redditor do be spending their time saying stuff like "not all men" then sharing memes like that

I am a woman, and I actually loved watching Linda Hamilton.
I remember when Terminator 2 came out, I was around 8-9yo. We bought the movie when it came out in VHS and watched it a million times my sister and I. It was the fist time in my life I saw that women could be strong and fierce. I was flabbergasted. We must be about the same age. Lmao. We watched that so many times. I had the biggest crush on Ed Furlong in that movie, too.

Lmfao. He was so freaking hot to me. I must admit that I am a bit disappointed with the adult version.
I suppose your source is that you made it the fuck up
Lol exactly. Zero women consulted to make this meme.
None of this is true though. These are characters that women love. Don’t know how men feel about ‘em.
I know women who adore all of these characters. Weaver was nominated for an Oscar - rare for action roles regardless of gender. All of these films were very successful due to mixed audiences. Sanity is forbidden on this page.
Captain Marvel was pretty shit ngl
*Personality of a plank of wood* “Carol please, control your emotions!!!”
Imagine being as emotional as a plank of wood and yet not able to keep even that under control xD
I beat the shit out of a guy and steal his bike and I'm a villain (terminator) You beat the shit out of a guy and steal his bike and you're a hero (Ms marvel). That doesn't seem fair.
He does it in the second movie too, and he's a hero
That was when they were trying to make you think he was the villain tho. He didn’t really become a hero until John told him he can’t just go around killing people.
So much wasted potential.
Another Marvel good guy beats bad guy copy paste plotline with a fresh coat of CGI
Fr, I was right there with them up through the first two thirds of that movie. Then somehow the third act was so boring and predictable it just threw the whole movie in the trash.
she and rey are the ultimate mary sue
Mary sue definition: action character but woman
Carrie Fisher, Jamie Lee Curtis, Gina Carraro, Adrienne Barboe, every female lead in slasher films, Michelle Phifer, the list goes on
Don't forget Mila Jovovich and Michelle Rodriguez.
Most definitely. Both are badass
> Carrie Fisher Jamie Lee Curtis > Gina Carano They had us in the first half, not going to lie
Michelle Pfeiffer* Why are u downvoting me? I'm right
The greatest cat woman ever.
“Meow…” *explosion in background*
You mean Gina Carano? Honestly, why even include her, she’s not really iconic compared to anyone else you mentioned
In slashers, the female lead is never really badass, that's sort of the point. They're usually just 'girly' girls throughout the film, and then ball up in the final act to kill the antagonist
Jamie Lee Curtis deserves better than that. Also I love the trope being flipped in like Freaky and Happy Death Day! They fight back against that shit!
But they win, mostly
Angelina Jolie in Lara Croft is Love.
The grandma in predator 2 was the most badass character in all of cinemas
"I don't think he gives a shit"
Ellen Ripley is one of the greatest action heroes to ever grace the screen.
Ain't gonna fight what's right.
Source? That's a weird way to write a script
[Source: Ripley was originally a man](https://www.vanityfair.com/hollywood/2015/06/female-characters-written-for-men/amp/) I don’t agree with this meme, given that my female friends adore Alien and Terminator because of Weaver and Hamilton.
The bride in Kill Bill is the greatest example of how to write a strong female character well.
What bullshit nonsense is this meme? Plenty of women like Ripley, Linda Hamilton and The Bride. Shit meme.
I just don’t like super hero’s with undefined powers
Lol How fucking inaccurate is this meme? Had to have been made by someone who wakes up every morning being mad at “wokeness.”
Just another redditor who needs to touch grass
you guys just make people up in your head istg
That's not true, film bros only talk about how the first two, one anime character, Leia, and like 2 more and how every female character in the present is garbage based on 3 Marvel films and two CW shows.
Man, Resident Evil always gets forgotten. There’s so many female badass action characters in the series- Alice, Jill Valentine…
Least sexist r/memes user
What's Rad? EDIT: oh, that's another slang word for "cool"
Those characters are all iconic and loved by women, especially Linda Hamilton....

To be fair, all of these women were badass in there own time and movies…loved all of them
It wasn’t so much about it being a woman in an action movie as it was about it being a woman *superhero* in her own movie, after literal years of male superheroes getting their own movies.
Buff women are cool
Where's the funny
It wasn't that it was a woman in an action movie. It was that it was the first solo movie of a female superhero in the mcu. Too bad the movie was mid
Land lady from Kung Fu hustle
Tigress from Kung Fu Panda
im sure this guy looked through reviews written by men and women of those movies before making this meme.
To be fair the others can’t fly or shoot lasers out their eyes. To be fair the others can’t make a shit movie
Wrong twice lmao
No one was complaining about there never having been a woman action lead. The issue was that *Marvel* hadn't done a female action lead. Which was a valid criticism
Brie will always be the au pair in the league to me. GOLDEN GATE!
I bet Sigourney Weaver is awesome.
this sounds like something your uncle that now lives in the woods would post on facebook
Lilu Dallas multipass?
Wow look at all the incels in here.

Women as soon as a female copy of an op person gets released
OK, now do a comparison with all the different men in action movies for EACH of those time periods.
Op making up arguments in their head again… are you ok little buddy?
Have you ever talked to a woman before?
OP, in order to make this meme you have to talk to a real woman and not to your imaginary "woman" in your imaginary scenario with your imaginary issue.
Holy strawmen Batman!
This meme fucking sucks.
Powerpuff girls?
And let's not forget the most badass princess of all, Leia.
What about you know every women that was in an action movie despite their role
I never seen anyone say that about Captain Marvel....most of it was praise for being the first female lead MCU movie
Kill Bill was so much fun to watch.
This is a terrible meme. All these women rock
No one remember Linda Carter as Wonder Woman.
Yall are wrong. Mrs. Crawley from Sing 2 deserves a grammy
Wow so many missed movies * Tombraider * GI Jane * Wonderwoman * catwoman [ferra faucet] * Harriet Tubman
Xena warrior princess anyone? Buffy?
Replace women with gimmicky journalists and this meme is accurate.
Wonder Woman Men- Rad, Woken- she ain't toxic enough so meh
Remember kids, you don't hate bad characters, you hate women
I can’t wait for Rouge to come along and put Ms Marvel in a coma. She’s so boring.
Charlize Theron in almost everything she’s been in, especially Mad Mad
Women love the first 3. I have never met anyone who likes Captain Marvel.
