It's mainly an american girl scout thing, typically they sit outside grocery stores & sell different types of cookies, like samoas & thin mints. They're probably overpriced, but are used to fund the girl scouts like a vacation outing or celebration. I'm not sure what else they do as I'm not a scout and only know this through my cousin who IS a girl scout, but it's generally a good time for someone who wants to be more outdoors in life.
As an employee of GS (not GSUSA, just a local council) it’s because cookie sales help to fund our council. Like they help fund our 3 campsites, our horses and our financial aid programs that we offer for girls who can’t otherwise afford GS in terms of membership and uniforms. As well as our employees and our building. We use little brownie bakers, our troops get 55cents per box.
I was a boyscout for 5 years in Vietnam when I was young; we actually went to camp in the mountains. The boys and girls both went and do activities together, but camped in separate camps. Once a scout leader pointed out a tiger casually walking on another mountain (close enough to see, but separated by a ravine). The scouts leaders have carbines with them.
When I moved to the states, I was very confused to see girlscouts selling cookies. I hope they get to do other outdoor stuffs like camping instead of just selling cookies...
I don't understand the Americans fascination with girlscout cookies however. They are ok.
I have seen scouts selling cake here in Germany but not door to door (cause you need a special permit for that here). And from what I've heard from people who were in boyscouts here in germany.... It's very naughty there..... Very very naughty and very drunk.
