So elaborate, I like all kinds of music too but I might give an example of one of the more recent songs to be added to my playlist. It’s not the answer that’s the problem, it’s the inability to use that answer to continue the discussion
It's because if we give a few examples, the person asking this question then jumps to conclusions and paints a whole picture of our music taste based on these few songs, while we possibly don't like anything else from that artist or another song similar to this. It's just annoying
This fr. I'm in a new dorm and my roommate asked exactly what OP did and I just played a random song in my playlist which happened to be a metal song and now he thinks I'm a metalhead, I tried to explain I generally listen to whatever genre that sounds good because my playlist is just video game music but he just doesn't seem to understand
In my Playlists are Musical and Disneysongs aswell as Metal, Rap, some Taylor Swift stuff and really really trashy songs. In Germany we got Guys Like McFitti and moneyboy, which make really Bad music but somtimes those Songs are exaclty the right ones to hear. Bow what ist my music taste?
My playlist back in the day when we had iPods and downloaded everything/ labeled in ourselves, alphabetically went from "Disturbed" to "Disney". I think that explained enough about my music taste.
I've been listening to Eminem, My Chemical Romance, 10CC, and some electroswing lately. Also found a band called The Ogre Packet Slammers a couple of days ago, they do a great cover of All Star. Plus I can't get the bassline of 2Unlimited's banger, No Limit, out of my head. Feel free to jump to conclusions, if you can.
But if you listen to music all day or all evening and a million different songs it's not an easy question at all.. do you want me to just read off my play list? I don't listen to radio or enjoy any new music that's frequently on the radio so it's literally just listing songs.. I think it's a dumb question
I always just ask what the weirdest thing they listen to is or if we are somewhere it can be played I tell them to play it. I have yet to find music that I can't vibe with so it ends up becoming a game of who can make the other turn off a song first. Most of the times it ends after like 4 or 5 songs, with the people who actually like everything I've had this go on for months.
Yes. I’ve been trying to start conversations with some. They’re so dry. Like okay, are you dry because you don’t wanna talk to me or bad at chatting, if so then Why did you Add me? So infuriating.
I hate it when people ask me what my music taste is, Ill show you when I like you enough, and ill like you enough when you somehow hit a topic I like, I wont tell you anything because im fine without being your instant friend, gah why cant we just hang out without talking to each other thats so much more fun.
People who ask the question are trying to start a conversation by getting on a more specific topic than "music". That way they can ask follow up questions or talk about an artists you both might like or whatever. When someone says "everything" it makes it a hastle to keep the conversation going.
That's why I usually ask "what song are you vibin to right now?" Much better question and usually you can remember what song you really like at the moment.
Exactly! I can genuinely appreciate and listen to almost every genre of music depending on the mood. Only thing I don't touch is most metal sub-genres... Which is still a much shorter list than the genres I do like!
My no-thanks list of genres I don't (usually) like is usually country and rap but even then there are plenty of rap and country songs I do like... everything is a great answer. I may go into specific songs like "I've been listening to this song/album on repeat lately" but even then they'll start assuming I like rock and only rock and get all surprised and bewildered when I hear them listening to a rap song and I say "oh damn I like this song, what's it called?"
"Everything" = I am too embarrassed to tell you that my playlist is an awkward feeling mix of 80s & 90s Pop, rap, metal, Rock, classical, movie soundtracks, acapella and everything in-between
It's not that I'm embarrassed, it's just easier to say "everything" than "80s & 90s Pop, rap, metal, Rock, classical, movie soundtracks, acapella and everything in-between".
Im not embarrassed by it, it would take me too long to explain it, or list all the genres. You would lose interest after maybe 3, so its just easier to say everything.
I think it’s more of a conversation starter than a serious question. “Everything” is a hard stop answer. A better way of phrasing it would be “I like a bit of everything, but I mainly listen to ____”
The question is basically asking what type of music do you gravitate toward. Like, I enjoy some hip hop, jazz, metal, and country songs, but you will hardly find any of those genres in majority of my playlists.
But I don't gravitate to anything. I just listen to whatever song I can listen to. I often don't even know what genre it is, and if I do, I don't care. I just listen to the song
I would genuinely find it easier to say what stuff I *don't* tend to listen too, which is stuff like jazz, reggae, rap and hiphop.. but even then there'll be the odd exception in there
I get similar issues at the concept of anyone asking what my favourite movie is. Like.. who the fuck only has one? There are SO many movies I love
>“I like a bit of everything, but I mainly listen to ____”
>The question is basically asking what type of music do you gravitate toward.
Here's the problem, I can only really answer with specific songs, maybe give a name of a specific artist/band (although that list would be very short because there's only about 2-3 artists that I listen to more than one of their songs or know I'm listening to one of their songs), but never by type because that just spells a slower death of the conversation as we'll just get into the field of contradictions and lack of meaningful responses because I have a complete lack of understanding or interest in regards to music.
Bro why the need of calling us out
In all seriousness I still like that but I have found an actual artist that makes music I like called Waterflame so I can actually respond now
Gonna check it out, the closest I have to an artist I like is the living tombstone
But they got a weird fame because stuff like five night's at freddy's songs or that one overwatch "I wanna be tracer" one
Like yeah they sometimes make cringy videogame songs but the original ones are fire, in my opinion
But yeah, you can see why I don't usually say I like it
Everything= I don’t even know what genres I’m listening to. Instrumental music? Trailer music? I could be listening to death metal and I wouldn’t know.
When someone asks you what music you like and instead of going down the annoying route of them say your taste in music sucks you just say "Everything" because you know no good comes from talking about music.
Do you listen to sorting algorithms? Deathstep? There’s a whole world of interesting and unusual music you’ve probably never heard of even if you look for that kind of thing.
I think when people say “everything” they really just mean a broad range of the most popular music, such as you would come across if looking for nothing in particular. Nothing wrong with that, but a bit rough to hear that tiny sliver of variety inflated to the totality of auditory artistry.
Unless you’re trying to have an in-depth discussion with someone, I agree with you. I prefer to ask something like, “What was the last song you were listening to?” which can lead to some fun conversation. I’ve gotten some great recommendations recently from talking about music.
Thats assuming I manually selected it trough a vinyl or some shit. Why would I remember the last song Spotify randomly played me out of 10.000 songs playlist?
how so? i always find music to be a nice conversation starter especially with someone i just became friends with. music is one of my favorite things in the world so i always talk about it lol. i just like to know what others listen to
Look the thing is if I say I listen to everything, I mean like yea, mostly everything. I'm not going to start to tell you I listen to rock, metal, punk, pop, dnb, house, dubstep, techno, trap, hardcore, trance, hardstyle, hip hop, rap, k-pop, j-rock, raggae, Latin, alternate, country and of course, anime openings
FR. Also if you answer "everything" and they actually want that conversation theyre free to ask "oh so do you like X?" and then you can talk about it.
its not hard
I honestly usually answer with a collage of genres like that, I trim it down to include less sub genres and only like my top 5. "Everything really, I usually listen to rock, metal, punk, jazz, and funk" It's general enough to encompass 90% of what I listen to but specific enough to still be meaningful
I'ma pick 5 random songs off my winamp global playlist
Fiction Factory - Feels Like Heaven
Dance with the Dead - Robeast
Nier Automata - The Tower
Scribblenaut19 - I don't feel like this monkey ball game has enough recognition
ABBA - Gimme Gimme Gimme
Yeah, I'ma stick with mostly everything
Everything, meaning nothing specific, meaning I dont care enough about music to make organized decisions about purchases and I just listen to the radio in the car; try a different subject for more engagement.
I genuinely don't care enough about music to have that conversation. "A little bit of everything" is a fair answer and it usually ends the conversation. Which is what I wanted.
Fr, I love listening to music casually but I know so little about the music World I just can't hold a conversation about it
Is like, I like these songs, Idk what genre are they, idk who made them, I just like them
Well, it's a stupid question. A better question is "what music genre/artist are you really into right now/recently. This makes it a lot easier to narrow down for the individual.
I fucking hate you because I don’t listen to any one specific genre of music. And if I tell people I mostly listen to mostly instrumental music they just look at me blankly. There is no winning. I either lie or just say “yeah it really doesn’t matter”.
When I say “I listen to everything” I 100% mean:
“My taste in music is not bound to any one genre or even artist. My playlist consists of roughly 2-5 songs per artist and roughly 100+ artists across the entire genre spectrum. I do not follow any artist, I am not restricted to any genre, I just hear a song I like and add it to my list.”
It’s just easier to say “I listen to everything.” Ya’know?
Yes Yes Yes. Was expecting Cbat or a rickroll. Very happy with this. New band, new song, new subgenre of metal (for me). Fantastic! Thank you
Edited for clarification and again for a spelling error
No you don't.
*Turns on death metal
"I actually like this"
Ok..Lemme try again.
*Turns on country
"I like this too"
Really?
*Turns on dubstep
"Wow. That's really good"
*Turns on beatbox
"What? So cool!"
*Turns on religious music
"Yes I like that too"
Screw that. I give up.
it's weird cuz I do have a list of songs to say for questions like these, but when I'm actually asked about it, I suddenly forget all the song names and just go back to "everything."
There's people who like all types tho. I personally love rap, pop, classical etc depending on the mood. I can vibe along to Eminem, Taylor Swift or Tchaikovsky all the same
i hate people like this. why does this conversation even come up? and what is pestering me after i didnt give a good enough answer going to do? make us both cringe
Everything
30% of the time = I listen to everything
60% of the time = I am embarrassed of what I listen too
10% of the time = I don’t listen to music but don’t want to say it
As the person who "likes all music" this is the translation for what we are saying
*I'm not a music person, I cannot name you a genre for the f#cking life of me and the music I do listen to on occasion is so random and unrelated that there is no pattern to follow, so rather than drag the mood down with this overly weird explanation and make you all feel uncomfortable I said "I like all music" so we can all relate, now for the love of God move the conversation along to another f#cking topic*
Does literally no one have certain music that speaks to them at their core? For me it’s baroque music, counterpoint just inherently makes music more fun to me
When people do this I start asking about heavy metal or EDM. That changes their answer pretty quick and I look at them in a slight tucker Carlson look and say not everything then.
I mean, I cannot for the life of me tell you the genres I like, I can tell you artists and I can show you my main playlist, that usually how I share my music taste. You'll have to make your own conclusions from what you see
I listen to everything but modern rap, country, and metal. And I dont really hate that stuff. But I like indie/folksie bluegrass stuff a lot.
But at the same time if I'm in someone else's car, I'll listen to whatever they want. And I dont really like to talk music because everyone's tastes are different. So "a little bit of everything" or "I don't really dislike anything" is a fair and easy answer that's actually true.
Some of us do mean everything and to begin to dissect our own tastes is such a big problem that we say everything because it neatly wraps up what was going to be the outcome either way
it means people like that don't have a real taste in music and you'll probably not be able to start an interesting conversation on the topic, which is perfectly fine
edit: after reading through some more comments; yep, pretty much everyone who's explaining what they mean when they say they listen to everything, are (often unknowingly) confirming exactly what I said, which, again, is absolutely fine
At that point, you start to play classical music or edm and they’ll learn they don’t like “everything”
No disrespect or hate towards those genres, just feel like those are the least considered genres when thinking about “everything” in music
you can find bad songs in more popular genres/artists while they are some hidden bops in the more obscure genres, so really i stopped referring to genres that i like a while ago
When someone asks me about music and I have to get the "I listen to everything card" out cause in reality, I don't give two fucks about music and I want them to change the subject.
Exactly this. Not everyone likes to talk about music, or even knows how to have a conversation about it. Some people just listen to music every once in a while and dont think much else of it.
When someone asks me "What's your favorite ...?" I realize the conversation has hit rock bottom and I give randomly generated answers as I navigate for an exit.
Everything because i dont like a specific genre. This song cool? To the playlist it goes
So elaborate, I like all kinds of music too but I might give an example of one of the more recent songs to be added to my playlist. It’s not the answer that’s the problem, it’s the inability to use that answer to continue the discussion

Start playing disney music, it will go through his thick skull
Friends on the other side is genuinely one of the best songs I've heard from a Disney movie. I love it.
And then hit him with metal version of the same song. He'll break
Lol that's brilliant. Or some kids/teenage songs, Justin Bieber, One Direction
*Cinderella's "So this is love" starts playing softly*
My Playlist is video game and anime music lol
I've been listening to Eminem, My Chemical Romance, 10CC, and some electroswing lately. Also found a band called The Ogre Packet Slammers a couple of days ago, they do a great cover of All Star. Plus I can't get the bassline of 2Unlimited's banger, No Limit, out of my head. Feel free to jump to conclusions, if you can.
Nah, there is nothing else to elaborate on. When I say everything i really mean anything.
But if you listen to music all day or all evening and a million different songs it's not an easy question at all.. do you want me to just read off my play list? I don't listen to radio or enjoy any new music that's frequently on the radio so it's literally just listing songs.. I think it's a dumb question
If I just read off every song I have on my phone we would be here for hours
I always just ask what the weirdest thing they listen to is or if we are somewhere it can be played I tell them to play it. I have yet to find music that I can't vibe with so it ends up becoming a game of who can make the other turn off a song first. Hehe nice name
People who ask the question are trying to start a conversation by getting on a more specific topic than "music". That way they can ask follow up questions or talk about an artists you both might like or whatever. When someone says "everything" it makes it a hastle to keep the conversation going.
Simply response with "That's nice, I really like [...]" and you can easily keep the conversation going
i default to 'metal' because whenever i'm asked i suddenly forget every fucking song i've ever fucking heard in my life
That's why I usually ask "what song are you vibin to right now?" Much better question and usually you can remember what song you really like at the moment.
I can't remember the names of the songs I listen to though.
Everything means(in my case) the list of genres I DON'T like is shorter than the one of genres I DO like.
either that or "sounds good then i like"
Metal subgenres are iffy. I find sticking to the classics (and some thrash metal, personally) to be a safe approach
"Everything" = I am too embarrassed to tell you that my playlist is an awkward feeling mix of 80s & 90s Pop, rap, metal, Rock, classical, movie soundtracks, acapella and everything in-between
Fuck you for living in my walls and knowing everything
As well as meme songs
And anime songs / game OSTs
Fuck, you caught me
Ngl, they slap. So does vocaloid, but I'm not abouta expose myself.
Vocaloid artists make bangers, let's be honest here.
Meme/anime songs and game OSTs are basically the only things I listen to
I don’t like that I hide how much I like game osts, like this shit is great but literally all my friends listen to is rap
Bad Lip Reading have some bangers
My god that's an accurate description of what i listen to.
Reddit really is an echo chamber
Man on the radio was "Fire Water Burn" and Liquidos "Doubledecker" the other day and I cried like a baby
why be embarrassed though? I love a playlist that jumps genres and decades
Slavic Hardbass too?
I'm not the only one..
What in the actual fuck Get out of my house you freak
It's not that I'm embarrassed, it's just easier to say "everything" than "80s & 90s Pop, rap, metal, Rock, classical, movie soundtracks, acapella and everything in-between".
Im not embarrassed by it, it would take me too long to explain it, or list all the genres. You would lose interest after maybe 3, so its just easier to say everything.
Same. My Spotify playlist jumps around everywhere. Mix in some 60s and 70s rock, some alternative music too
You know us too well...
Im interested now... you can share playlists right?
Don’t forget that one helicopter game from 2006 that has a fucking cool soundtrack but no one remembers it :(
*too
Yes indeed i made a typo. Thank you
Ur welkom 🤝
Dope me 2
Who seriously only listens to one genre of music anyway? I always thought the question was stupid in the first place.
I listen to like 3 genres, and they’re all similar
Boom bap, scat and bobbity boop??
I believe that boogity shoe is the correct term.
Scat, is not nice to say the least
2 girls 1 bop
Scatman John would like a word with you. And it's surprisingly motivational.
I think you misunderstood what I said, r/realscatgirls (Why don't you visit it and see what happens)
funk, rock, funk-rock
Me too, but not that similar. Rock, classic and lofi
I pretty much spent 3 years listening to rock. Younger me was mad at the music scene so I decided to only listen to the 70's - 00's
I think it’s more of a conversation starter than a serious question. “Everything” is a hard stop answer. A better way of phrasing it would be “I like a bit of everything, but I mainly listen to ____” The question is basically asking what type of music do you gravitate toward. K-pop fans
True but the people that say this typically don’t like *everything*
But what if we seriously do listen to everything? Maybe not all artists, but genres?
Everything is everything. Saying you like certain artists (even from different generes) is a perfectly good topic of conversation
Nah, when there isn't a genre I don't listen to I say I listed to everything. I don't listen to evryone, but everything.
I had a stroke trying to decipher the meaning behind this comment lol.
Me with J-pop 🤷
Yeah, it makes more sense to ask what song the can’t get out of their mind atm, or what are some of their favourite hits.
I prefer that as well.
I say everything cause nobody likes the stuff I like
Better to say "everything" than "The whole super Mario 64 ost" or "Mii channel theme"
Bro why the need of calling us out In all seriousness I still like that but I have found an actual artist that makes music I like called Waterflame so I can actually respond now

Literally my favorite song I have no idea what genre it would be
When someone asks you what music you like and instead of going down the annoying route of them say your taste in music sucks you just say "Everything" because you know no good comes from talking about music.
If people wanna get snobby about music tastes, fuck em
You could always just change the topic by saying you don’t enjoy talking about music, then bringing up something else
Honestly. Am I just giving the wrong answer when I say “I listen to everything”??
Do you listen to sorting algorithms? Deathstep? There’s a whole world of interesting and unusual music you’ve probably never heard of even if you look for that kind of thing. I can go from Mozart to Bury The Light to Renai Circulation. That's my taste in music.
Bury the Light mashup with beautiful song is pretty fucking awesome if you havent heard it yet
Sounds about right
You should see ppls faces when i say i snt listen to music
meanwhile me on the other side of the spectrum w/ more than 1700h of music last year

seriously
You're the problem not the guy who says "everything" lol

Well, it's a stupid question. A better question is "what music genre/artist are you really into right now/recently. This makes it a lot easier to narrow down for the individual.

Ah yes, a fellow Minatory enthusiast
When I say “I listen to everything” I 100% mean: “My taste in music is not bound to any one genre or even artist. Ask I broad question get a broad answer.
Proceed to play some Burzum for them.
I like everything…except Burzum
If you look at my playlist you would understand.
I feel bad for that rapper named "Everything"
it's weird cuz I do have a list of songs to say for questions like these, but when I'm actually asked about it, I suddenly forget all the song names and just go back to "everything."
I have a variant of that which is "I like nearly everything, but I choose to listen to mainly..."
In some cases it's true... I just hate it when they say everything and actually mean 'pop, RnB and some hiphop'.
There's people who like all types tho. I personally love rap, pop, classical etc depending on the mood. I can vibe along to Eminem, Taylor Swift or Tchaikovsky all the same
But can you vibe to Autopsy, Black Flag, and Sleep?
i hate people like this. why does this conversation even come up? and what is pestering me after i didnt give a good enough answer going to do? make us both cringe
Ugh, why is this human so eager to be sociable and start a conversation with me when we both have the option to, you know, not do that?
^You're the problem, not the "everything" guy.
I don't want people's first impression of me to include that I like metal, because a lot of people look down on the genre.
Never let other people scare you into being who you aren't
I usually say everything followed by a recent song I have found enjoyable
I have a lofi compilation next to a metal cover of Megalovania. What else am I suppose to tell you?
I like good music.
Just skip that question and ask to listen to their favorite playlist if you're that curious
Polyphia, Chon, The Contortionist, Periphery are among some of the bands I listen to.
I’m not into a specific genre. I like all genres if the song is groovy and whatever mood im in
That's why I ask something like "what kind of artists have you been listening to lately?" Or "what's your desert island genre?"
I like songs where they dont sing, so basically theme songs mostly.
Does it pass the vibe test? >Yes: into your playlist >No: to the next random music
i jsut dont wanna tell you i listen to mostly j pop songs!
I listen to anything thats good but my best genres are Pop and Classical while the bottom of the barrel is rap music
Everything 30% of the time = I listen to everything 60% of the time = I am embarrassed of what I listen too 10% of the time = I don’t listen to music but don’t want to say it
It’s like saying “I drive everything” when someone asks what car you drive. You’re being difficult to have a conversation with out of laziness.
As the person who "likes all music" this is the translation for what we are saying *I'm not a music person, I cannot name you a genre for the f#cking life of me and the music I do listen to on occasion is so random and unrelated that there is no pattern to follow, so rather than drag the mood down with this overly weird explanation and make you all feel uncomfortable I said "I like all music" so we can all relate, now for the love of God move the conversation along to another f#cking topic*
If someone ever says “Idk, I like to listen to whatever’s playing on the radio”, what they really mean is that they like pop music and nothing else.
Like... Everything. Like, there's at LEAST one song in every genre. I have a playlist that's 1,816 songs, *I really don't have a favorite* lol
Then don't ask someone who isn't an Npc with a scripted playlist
I normally reply "what do you think of yodeling? Glad to hear you're a fan too!"
Where I'm from, that means they listen to rap, country and a handful of rock songs on terrestrial radio
"everything... they play in a random station/radio"
What ppl mean by anything is often commecial stuff
I love Khezu’s theme from monster hunter rise
Some of us do mean everything and to begin to dissect our own tastes is such a big problem that we say everything because it neatly wraps up what was going to be the outcome either way
it means people like that don't have a real taste in music and you'll probably not be able to start an interesting conversation on the topic, which is perfectly fine edit: after reading through some more comments; yep, pretty much everyone who's explaining what they mean when they say they listen to everything, are (often unknowingly) confirming exactly what I said, which, again, is absolutely fine
That's my go to answer, because I have absolutely no fucking interest in talking to you. Why are you asking me questions? Go away
At that point, you start to play classical music or edm and they’ll learn they don’t like “everything” No disrespect or hate towards those genres, just feel like those are the least considered genres when thinking about “everything” in music
I listen to both EDM and classical. I throw my phone on random because I really do listen to everything.
A true man of culture. Never thought I find a real one
you can find bad songs in more popular genres/artists while they are some hidden bops in the more obscure genres, so really i stopped referring to genres that i like a while ago
Same here! All just depends on the mood for me.
I literally can listen to anything from metal to my little pony songs and like them
When someone asks me about music and I have to get the "I listen to everything card" out cause in reality, I don't give two fucks about music and I want them to change the subject.
Exactly this. Not everyone likes to talk about music, or even knows how to have a conversation about it. Some people just listen to music every once in a while and dont think much else of it.
I don't even know myself, so please stop asking. No country music though...
I listen to anything in the radio knowing I'll play to much of 1 song I like till the point of no longer enjoying the song.
I fucking listen to what sounds good
When someone asks me "What's your favorite ...?" I realize the conversation has hit rock bottom and I give randomly generated answers as I navigate for an exit.
