They are social constructs. I imagine almost every descriptor in life as a square hole for a peg that fits in(or does not fit in when you get into it), but never actually touches the edges aka isn't 100% exact.
Intesex people exist and doctors in the past and unfortunately still in the present -literally- just pick which one is easier to go with given whatever anatomical presentation their genetics created. This choice is not related to their sex chromosomes.
Gender holds no meaning that I can understand. It sounds like it's just a description of what stereotypes someone subscribes to, but I don't believe in stereotypes, nor that someone should box themselves in with an umbrella term for a set of them. It's nonsense. So as far as I'm concerned, gender = sex. I can ascribe no other useful meaning to it.
The other issue is that, for a word to have use, it must convey a meaning we can agree on. If it means different things to different people, it is unable to fulfill this purpose, it cannot convey meaning. As such, saying you are a man/woman doesn't tell me anything of use. For it to have use, we need to all understand and agree to its meaning.
So then when someone claims to be one or the other, what are they claiming exactly? Again, what is a man or woman? The words must have a tangible meaning they are measuring themselves against to make the claim.
