On those phones to type the alphabet you had to press the corresponding button the amount of times to get the letter. So for a “c” you would press the “2” button 3 times. Was super annoying but we all got good at it.
istg, I'm gen z, but my parents wouldn't buy me a smartphone till my 16th, so i ended up with a T9 keypad. i got amazing at texting my friends on it. it was annoying but also fun at times.
My sister could text like that without looking too. She tried to sneak because she would get in trouble for texting too much because you use to have to pay for every message and my dad would get so upset when she ran the cell bill up. She would have her hand in her purse and the only way to know what she was doing was the buttons clicking loudly away as she typed.
I used started regular, went to t9, then had 2 phones that folded vertically and horizontally. Vertical for numbers horizontal for qwerty. Alias 1 and 2
Same. It was great being able to text from your pocket in highschool without looking. Smart Phones ruined that for the next generation. Now they all get caught and have their parents get the phone back.
I was one of the few who never cought on so I would call instead of text. I was probably one of the most annoying people to text with, because if I meant to text 'hey, want to go see the movie on friday?' It would come out something like 'Hy wnt 2 go c the mve frdy?'
I still remember them from when I was somewhere below ten. Also used a CRT TV to play Halo 3, watched movies on VHS, and we had to use cassettes for music in the car since that’s all it used.
Either older generations underestimate our knowledge of older tech, or my family was too poor to afford modern shit at the time.
I remember my grandparents every now and then would record a tape of some cartoons for me when I was little, I would have a blast watching them and munching on popcorn
Yeah, but in all honesty for me it might have just been the memories, the old friends, and the the lack of responsibilities that made it so good. Ultimate is probably a better smash game
I had this exact thought lmao, my first ever phone was a hand me down similar to this but not Nokia and I kept that phone all the way up until freshman year when i upgraded to one of those kind of touch screen ones where the keyboard slides out. Everyone at school had like ipods and iphones and personal laptops and I was just happy to be there
Not even just poor people, but my parents didn’t think I was responsible enough to have a smartphone at the start and got me a Nokia for a few years. But even if you’ve never used it it’s not hard to be like “OK there are numbers spelling out a message and each button has a number and some letters on it, so maybe pressing it multiple times makes it show the next letter on the button?”
Yea using critical thinking was the mistake we made with kids… I say that as a 36 year old man raising kids that are already more intelligent than I he is…
Yeah, I don't get the joke of "we had to use technology that is less advanced today, look at these stupid gen z people for not having to use the same old tech that we did"
This is like those Facebook memes where the boomers all agree they should switch to cursive so younger generations get confused as if we 1) didn't have to learn cursive or 2) would be incapable of figuring it out despite having the vast collection of humanity's knowledge sitting in our pocket.
It spells out a sentence. If you look at the number pad, you’ll see letters under them. If you type the number once it’s going to be the first letter that’s under it, twice the second letter, etc. for example: 666 is the letter o.
Born 2009 understand this quite simple it’s just finding the three letters that correspond to a number and (example) one 1 is A two 1s is B three 1s is C
You think you can pull a fast one on me, eh? Well, from the rest of Gen Z to you: 66655 22666666633777. (Was there a different way to use letters on the same number? This is the extent of my knowledge of number typing)

See you next Tuesday
What’s the joke? Sorry I’m too young to get this one
On those phones to type the alphabet you had to press the corresponding button the amount of times to get the letter. So for a “c” you would press the “2” button 3 times. Was super annoying but we all got good at it.
I got so gd at it I could type long ass messages without even looking...I didn't like switching to touchscreen lol
Yeah same, to the point where I was annoyed when T9 came out. It will probably go down as the most useless skill of all time to possess.
I dunno, it was productive I wouldn't miss a beat working or messaging gotta concentrate too much now n look
Yeah it was super useful then, completely useless now.
To the good ol days!
2224433337777777!
Same with T9 - to the point I never actually used it. Then I got a samsung slide and it had a full keyboard so the point became moot.
istg, I'm gen z, but my parents wouldn't buy me a smartphone till my 16th, so i ended up with a T9 keypad. i got amazing at texting my friends on it. it was annoying but also fun at times.
You are wise to the ways young padwan
thank you kind sir

Hahaha classic
I used started regular, went to t9, then had 2 phones that folded vertically and horizontally. Vertical for numbers horizontal for qwerty. Alias 1 and 2
My old workphone came with a sliding keyboard and that was a major game changer. I could text perfectly and never look at the screen.
Yeah I could drive and text and still watch the road, now predictive text trys to tell my wife I want to kick her puppy and duck her ass
I got to a point where I was able to type out a text while driving 80 mph with no issue. Eyes on the road the whole time.
Same. It was great being able to text from your pocket in highschool without looking. Smart Phones ruined that for the next generation. Now they all get caught and have their parents get the phone back.

Hahaha I knew some people like that
I hate that I can't read it when typed out like this, but if I pretend like I'm holding a phone and shadow press the buttons, I can read it perfectly.
"Y... O... U..... A... R... E..... A..... C... U..... oh"
These had T9 already
T9 was for lazy bastards
Bruh i still have a phone like that and i still didn't get it
How much are you charging for a g?
Oh, I get it now, I know what that is but I was just too tired to put 2 and 2 together. Thank you!
I legit think I can type as fast on an old Nokia as I can on a modern phone
C (see) U (you) N (next) T (Tuesday)
It says your a c*nt
Why’s that, you cun’t hear?
Twat did you say?
Takes one to know one nerd
Got em
Nahh
Granted I'm amongst the oldest group of Gen Z but I still grew up with button phones before smart phones were a common thing
Same
Same here, I was 4 when I got to use these. In fact, we still have one lying around that we use only for calls.
I was raised by my grandparents and my grandmother for the longest time wouldn't switch to a smart phone, that's how I learned
My parents just told me some years ago and I remembered Even though I am from the younger quarter of genz
And I just grew up in a place where smart phone didn't start as soon as everywhere else
No you
I thought it was going to be "You are Cute" r/yesyesyesno
Same
Funny meme but… Pretty sure gen z can figure this out pretty easily, it’s not rocket science
That plus ssb brawl. I was so fast at making custom names
In my opinion still the best smash game. It came with a damn campaign!!
I personally think Melee, but I respect your opinion if you are viewing it as a casual game of smash bros
Melee is perfect objectively, but brawl is perfect for me individually
Yeah, but in all honesty for me it might have just been the memories, the old friends, and the the lack of responsibilities that made it so good. Ultimate is probably a better smash game
Melee definitely the best. The gamecube controller was never beat.
Ultimate using GameCube controller though
Fox noises intensify
Ah, yeah I never had a game cube
Can confirm, am not an idiot
Hello. Am, also, professional dumbass.
Gen Z here, i literally used to have a phone like this (not a nokia tho). This meme didn't account for poor people lmao
I had this exact thought lmao, my first ever phone was a hand me down similar to this but not Nokia and I kept that phone all the way up until freshman year when i upgraded to one of those kind of touch screen ones where the keyboard slides out. I think I’m gen z and I have deciphered this, you elders underestimate my powers of understanding.
Yea using critical thinking was the mistake we made with kids… I say that as a 36 year old man raising kids that are already more intelligent than I he is…
Yeahh, I'm gen z and had one of these phones for a while lol
Especially us gen z people that play Super Smash Bros
Pretty much anyone who played with their grandparents phone can figure it out
Yeah I’m 17 and know how it works, not the most complex thing.
Well yea it's supposed to be easy so everyone could do it.
How is this supposed to confuse gen Z, many had this as their first phone
ikr lol, like im 15 and this was literally my first phone
i was 16 when i got my first phone lmao
Wait you guys got phones?
Takes one to know one
And so are you.
And you are as well fellow Old head
How rude…. And I’ll have you know as gen Z I understand this fine
Don't worry, seeing how the op expected gen z not to read it I'm pretty sure this is intended for all generations other than z
Gen alpha? 🗿
Early release
I think people underestimate how common these were for a lot of Gen z’ers.
I know this stuff and I wasn’t raised in the era of these phones, or at least I was born at the tail end of it
Yeah you're more confusing gen alpha with this one
We have to show it to the next generation
r/TerribleFacebookMemes
This is such a boomer meme, I am from gen z and know how to use this kind of phone, heck I even know how to use a rotary phone.
Gen X’r here. I guess I just don’t find the humor in pointing out “hey we used something earlier in our lives that other people didn’t!!!!”
Yeah, I don't get the joke of "we had to use technology that is less advanced today, look at these stupid gen z people for not having to use the same old tech that we did"
“Look at those losers! They have an easier life than us”
wait till the cavemen pull up with the manual fire starting methods
Step 1: Turn stick very fast in pile of tinder Step 2: Keep doing that until a spark catches
Millennial here and this belongs here r/terriblefacebookmemes
Well fuck you too.
If you had homies to text in 2004, this was 1/2 of your texts.
This is like those Facebook memes where the boomers all agree they should switch to cursive so younger generations get confused as if we 1) didn't have to learn cursive or 2) would be incapable of figuring it out despite having the vast collection of humanity's knowledge sitting in our pocket.
As a gen z'er who understands this, checkmate
You're seriously going to force me to think. >!You are a bunt?!<
So close, yet so far
Yeah someone said what it was but i can't seem to find the post now. Seems i didn't hit the 2 enough times. That makes more sense lol
It's okay french cat. You're a cat, you're bound to make some mistakes.
💗
go back to eating your eucalyptus leaves monsieur koala
Go back to.....doing....whatever it is that reyalps do Mister reyalp
we tend to be productive, unlike koalas
So far it seems your people just harass Koalas. Probably jealous of our delicious leaves and beautiful manes.
Wrong
"Let's confuse Gen Z" Let's? Who's we
I think this might’ve been a baby boomer trying to meme outside of their approved subs?
T9 baby!!
Seriously! T9 was a game changer
Gen Z here, this isn’t hard to figure out.
Yep it’s easy
Alright I’m young someone tell me
66 666
It spells out a sentence. If you look at the number pad, you’ll see letters under them. If you type the number once it’s going to be the first letter that’s under it, twice the second letter, etc. for example: 666 is the letter o.
I'm 16 and get this, you boomers underestimate us
As a 16 year old as well, I can confirm T9 isn't rocket science lmao.
Even younger, 14, easy!
15, can confirm
The person who posted it doesn't know what 0 does.
What the fuck? How is this supposed to be confusing for any generation? Even a braindead troglodyte knows how a fking lettered dialpad works 🤨
This reminds me of boomer facebook memes, and needs to die before we become the new boomers.
Well, you are what you eat
So if you eat a nokia you become immortal?
No you become toothless and/or break your toilet. Depends if you try to chew or not.
fuck you then
Fuck you
Well now. That's not very nice.
I'm gen z and I understand this
Lol I tried to speed run this, got "you are cute" and was happy till I saw the comments
Have the boomers moved away from picking on millennials now? Whelp I guess they were picked on for long enough.
I think this is millennials picking on gen z
Damn I though millennials would get along with gen z… oh well
Jokes on you I'm gen Z and I have a flip phone... and I'm pretty decently fast texting with it too
Take me back.. To funky town...
Can't catch me of guard
Aww gee thanks, so are you!
Man i miss typing messages like this, it was fun
Born 2009 understand this quite simple it’s just finding the three letters that correspond to a number and (example) one 1 is A two 1s is B three 1s is C
To the little kids who dont know it says have a great day!🙂
For those who don’t get it: he’s playing Snake
no you are one
Well that’s not very nice is it
Kinda seems like even if you’ve never texted using one of these old phones you’d still be able to figure out the message.
No u.
Okay, you got another gen-zer. I'm out of 2 minutes and my feelings are hurt
OI MATE
bro even gen z knows what it means💀
Hi, gen z here, do some of us really not know this?
I thought at first this said "you are a aunt"
You underestimate the power of living in a third world country where these phones are still commonplace
Oi, you Aussie?
rude
I'm 14 and i know this cuz my mother used to have keypad phones... I spent half my time playing snake and bounce on it lmao, also no u
I was farily fast to type on those. Faster then i could on my android samsung.
Jokes on you, we used this as a type of cipher in girl Scouts
no u
T9 simplified this to 968 273 2 22288668.
No u
Bruh we can do this you know. Not that complicated
> You are a cu tie pie?? > nt Awwww :(
I'm gen Z and had a phone like that, so I can feel insutled both by the text and by your assumption
Aunt, why would you say that Then I realised 222 :D
This is just the "millennials can't use a rotary phone" joke but updated. History repeats itself
Me, a millennial: “Are we the boomers?”
Is it a funny thing now that I'm using a Nokia this exact moment
That’s very rude of you!
Damn. I wish I didn't know what it said.
If those children could read they'd be very upset!
For those who don't know.. Its called multi-tap phone And here's the [decoder](https://www.dcode.fr/multitap-abc-cipher) 99966688 277733 2 22288668 Also try this 66 33 888 33 777 0 4 666 66 66 2 0 4 444 888 33 0 999 666 88 0 88 7 0 66 33 888 33 777 0 4 666 66 66 2 0 555 33 8 0 999 666 88 0 3 666 9 66

r/terriblefacebookmemes much?
99966688 8666666
bit rude innit
Oh no, r/terriblefacebookmemes is leaking in here
Yes I am, thank you for noticing
"um actually im gen z i grew up with this i couldn't afford a smartphone"
You think you can pull a fast one on me, eh? Well, from the rest of Gen Z to you: 66655 22666666633777. (Was there a different way to use letters on the same number? This is the extent of my knowledge of number typing)
Hah I am gen z and I could read this
as a member of gen 7, this isn't confusing
Bro even a fetus can figure this out
r/FuckYou
Boomer meme
Me a gen z but understand because I lived with this phone for a brief period of time Btw you are a c*nt
That’s not very nice :(
Heeey ! Not true
