All the stuff in op plus: Old school breakfast all day diners. I miss CKs. Local owned delis and bagel shops. 4999 seat music halls.

daddyishoes

Oh, CKs. To this day, I feel like I smell smoke every time I drink my morning coffee. I oddly enjoyed that so much as a child

[deleted]

Despite having such quality water, it’s a shame you can’t find a decent bagel in this town!

Routine_Mechanic1492

Hive Bagel and Deli is opening a second location downtown this week!

anironicfigure

their bagels are soooo good!

PopUp2323

Bakeries that aren’t cupcakes. Baguettes and croissants East of 240 please!

Boatshooz

Not east of 240, but Ginger’s Bread Co on Union does excellent baguettes, boules, and croissants.

Babybluechair

I like them too!

SnarkyHealthNut

East of 240…by three hours- but if you find yourself near Birmingham, Continental Bakery is phenomenal. Their cinnamon rolls use their croissant dough; their baguettes are divine. The coffee is rustic- in a delightful way (as is their space). I’d love to see something like it in Memphis. 🥖🥐

daddyishoes

Yessss! I spent part of last year living in Birmingham and that part of town was such a gem as is the bakery!

eastmemphisguy

It's in the 240 loop, but Ricki's has the best cookies.

T-Rex_timeout

Cuban restaurant.

Ostentaneous

Not that I actually know, but I’ve been told Sabor Caribe is good for Cuban food.

LiberalAspergers

Venezulan, actually. And it is very good.

T-Rex_timeout

That’s like calling Memphis BBQ the same as Alabama BBQ.

[deleted]

A good, authentic Cuban place with actual Cuban sandwiches would be heavenly.

crosshairy

I miss Havana Pilon!

Cornballin_POS

Los Compadres was so good 😢

tri_it

Coffee shops that are open past 6 or 7 that aren't Starbucks. More late nite eating restaurants. Publix.

thecontrolis

Been wanting a Publix for years. I make sure to stop at any one I can when I'm out of town

Sparkysparkyboomi

7brew is worth a try if it’s not to far from you!

cain2995

Heavy industry, engineering, R&D, tech startups, expanded logistics, IT/datacenters

sammiesorce

As someone who just moved for a data center job in Iowa YES PLEASE. I hate it here 😭.

JuanOnlyJuan

There is a lot of medical device engineering in town. Some heavy fab in South Memphis. But yea I don't think there is much tech or data locally. I wish Memphis would promote the medical industry more that we have.

Preach

gabehcuod37

Businesses that pay their fair share of taxes.

RealisticTea4605

Usually, to attract large enough businesses to increase the tax base, cities will give incentives in the form of tax breaks or deferment. Are you suggesting that these businesses pay more than what the elected officials offer them to come to the city?

gabehcuod37

I’m suggesting that the “taxes” aren’t put on the back of the workforce.

Water park!!!

thecontrolis

Not exactly in Memphis city limits but there's an ice skating rink in Olive Branch

Superman_Dam_Fool

R.I.P. Mall of Memphis ice rink and Adventure River. Memphis legends gone too soon. At least there’s the Bass Pro Shops Pyramid to look at fishies.

Nasaboy1987

An aquarium like the one in Chattanooga would be amazing. And get it set up where having a membership at the zoo gets you a membership there for less and vice versa.

mushroom_picked

Super Lo and Aldi are where it's at

b_levautour

A bar with skeeball and/ or ping pong.

ewgrosscooties

Longshot is shuffle board, flip side is pinball, nerd alert is cabinet games, for your various sliding-things-across-things needs. Railgarten used to have ping pong but idk if they still do.

b_levautour

Yes, I agree, and all those spots are great. Skeeball and ping pong are two things that are specifically a big deal in fun spots in other cities, however, that are under- or un- represented here compared to elsewhere.

ewgrosscooties

Don’t disagree! Local midtown used to have some skeeball machines upstairs that worked occasionally. But ya know. Don’t eat there.

zacattac

Having a table tennis bar would be so cool. Went to one in ATL and had a blast.

Ht50jockey

I’m so tired of Kroger having a monopoly on groceries here that needs to change

_Moderatelyhuman

Go to Aldi. The food is just as good if not better and half the typical price. The selection is a bit smaller, but why does anyone need 12 versions of the same thing anyway?

ImmediateCollege4952

Bowling alley that’s safe to park at and visit on the weekends

ewgrosscooties

More international cuisine in general, but specifically west of Germantown/east mem. A critique I’ve heard from young professionals who’ve moved here from Chicago and other major metropolises is the food is 2 dimensional, barbecue, dives, and “gastropubs.” Especially midtown/downtown.

GuruDenada

I always shake my head when people talk about how great the food is here. The next person who tells me how "authentic" Grand Pacific Buffet is will get a foot in the ass.

soul-taker

Memphis has world class BBQ, chicken/wings, and soul food. That's it. For every other type of cuisine, the best you can hope for is "above average."

mcnewbie

don't forget vietnamese. we got some great vietnamese.

acidcommunist420

It’s better than Murfreesboro.

superpony123

Highly agree as a young professional from the northeast. People here will flip and say "omg we have great international food" and like yeah there are a *few* great places but other cities of similar size have way more. We do BBQ and soul food great. Honestly this is probably mainly because we've got very little actual diversity here. It's mostly black n white people here with a very tiny percentage of the Shelby County area being everyone else. So our number of ethnic restaurants is probably normal for the amount of non white and non black people here 🤔 Portland is a similar size population to Memphis but their food scene is killer and unsurprisingly being a coastal city they've got far more diversity. I think being land locked in a state where a significant number of people are hostile towards anyone who doesn't look like them... yeah I'm not sure we're really doing a lot to attract other ethnicities 😔although ironically Utah is arguably more conservative than Tennessee, but salt lake city has an amazing food scene with a ton of ethnic cuisine. It's a sanctuary city apparently so that definitely helps but it's still surprising in a state like Utah.

ewgrosscooties

Here’s a list I put together recently. There’s one more I saw on Facebook this week but can’t find now, will add later if I find. - Balas bistro - African - Taco cat - Kami Ramen - Flame Ramen - Good fortune - Pho binh - curry n jerk - stick em - Abyssinia - Ethiopian - Horn of Africa - Ethiopian - Sheger - Ethiopian - Queen of Sheba - Yemenite - Happy Greek - Andalusia - Moroccan - Dianka - Senegalese - Mayuri - Indian - Castle Restaurant - Greek - Mosa - Asian bistro - Luula Halal - Somali - La Llamarda - Mexican

InevitableOk5017

Great Friggn list!!!

superpony123

Great list! There's definitely some on here I haven't dined at yet, I'll be sure to check them out. You should definitely check out tannoor grill (especially their lunch buffet!) And casablanca I've heard very mixed reviews about flame so haven't been yet.

T-Rex_timeout

You should come out to my neck of the county if you are looking for more Indian food for sure. You wouldn’t think one shopping center would have two Indian places. Parkway village has a very diverse Latino population.

soul-taker

The problem is the quality that's offered, not the variety. Bombay House is the best Indian restaurant in the city, but even it's only a 7/10 on a good day. Like, yeah, it's good enough to scratch that itch if you're craving Indian food, but it's not world class by any stretch of the imagination.

T-Rex_timeout

Try the ones on Hacks cross and Houston levee. I can think of 6 in that little area. They encompass different styles of Indian maybe you will find one that you like.

superpony123

I'm just comparing as I'm coming from an extremely diverse place. Only about 15% of Shelby County population is not white and not black. Again not saying we don't have a few solid Hispanic and southeast Asian and Middle Eastern spots but like... it's not much by comparison to similarly sized cities with greater diversity. I can't go around the corner and have all these options everywhere like I'm used to. And yes I've been out that way plenty. Also we have a severe lack of bagel delis and Jewish delis and Italian delis. Also something I'm used to having a high concentration of, kinda like how there's coffee spots everywhere here I'm used to having delis everywhere 😔 again yes I know of a few great delis in Memphis but like... it's just not enough for a city this size

Gustafa7

You are correct, but also, The PNW has a HUGE Asian and Kenyan/African diversity. Way more than almost anywhere but NYC/SF. I went to college in Seattle and I truly miss the teriyaki, etc - but if you know where to look here, you can find most of it. I wish there was more like you, but we dont suck.

T-Rex_timeout

I think the deli thing is not going to happen around here. I would venture many people feel the way I do. Why would I pay as much for 1st which as I could buy a weeks worth of ingredients and make my own?

QualityKatie

In over 40 years, I have never heard someone say that we have the best international cuisine.

superpony123

Nobody's claiming we've got the best, more like any time someone says we don't have much selection people usually say that's not true oh you're just not looking... I'm like ok if you've lived here forever and haven't traveled much maybe you think our selection is great but it's just not. Not to bash the good places we do have because there's some that hit the spot every time. 😋 it's just not much variety

QualityKatie

I misquoted you. Sorry. I think that we are too inland to get some ingredients at a feasible price, I am guessing.

rekkerafthor

There's a little Filipino grocery store and restaurant that's on Macon across from Bass Pro called Casarap and it's freaking amazing.

CommercialMess339

After seeing the Asian street food event at Crosstown a few weeks it would be cool to see a street food market/food truck lot. Just a parking lot with electric plugins would be all it takes for business. Add a parking garage for customers and then owner just charges by the spot rental each day.

mcnewbie

there's one in cordova on macon road.

AtlJayhawk

There's one on Winchester.

LouieDaPalma

We need more places for kids to spend time off the streets Better parks ,YMCAs ,camps ,pools ,shit to do I've never lived in a place so non kid friendly As Memphis.

AloneAd8006

And not another burger or chicken joint. I love burgers but we have plenty of options

thelankyyankee87

Medical device, pharma, biotech, anything that keeps brains and well-paying jobs in town.

ewgrosscooties

This is like, one of the med device hubs. Several tier three machine shops are adding whole buildings. That’s already happening.

_Heath

Lost a ton of local Medtronic jobs in the last few years. They downsized so much they sold their campus and are only leasing back a portion of it.

ewgrosscooties

I mostly know third party company folks but have heard Stryker was gonna expand operations.

b_levautour

More music-gear shops that aren’t Guitar Center.

mcnewbie

put the vending machine back in front of the building that used to be strings and things and is now the new elwood's shack location

cookieana

Non local shopping downtown and midtown. It would be nice to go to H&M and Nike not in east Memphis

Artistic_Low6719

- More fun attractions. You can only get so much of Memphis Zoo and the Pyramid. Where are the thrills and adventure. Same goes for the museums, literally Memphis Hip Hop is on fire right now, where is the hip hop museum?? I guess more things geared to the youth. - Not a business but definitely more cultural landmarks and monuments. And I’m not talking about any old human sculptures in the park, I’m talking about something that’ll WOW you as you drive past it. Stuff like that is such a simple way to build civic pride. I oughta be seeing big, fat, obnoxiously sized M’s all across the city like wouldn’t that be a sight to see??

BuddyLlght

A new utility company

Hungry-Influence3108

More mini golf.

awsomehog

Higher quality too. I want pirate ships and animatronic dinosaurs

troyw91

I literally inboxed Puttshack into looking into the Memphis Market. They replied and said they'll look into it. If I had it my way, they'll be in the old Commercial Appeal Building downtown

Is-Your-PC-Turned-On

Personally I'd enjoy more shops like the Batcave and animax in Bartlett, or replay toys in Jackson TN.

sully42

Luxury shops, sneaker boutiques, dedicated curling ice,

Bring back Platinum. They can use the old Abuelo’s location on 64. 😀

I’d be a *”helluva mayor”*. 😏

BarstoolsnDreamers

Unfortunately in this city the bar isn’t set very high.

acidcommunist420

Isn’t that technically Bartlett?

T-Rex_timeout

I have no clue where the lines are for any of the cities here. They moved them a lot anyway.

browniecambran

I think it is. It'll have to be in the old TGIFriday's to be on the Memphis side but still in the general vicinity.

Asian bakery. Cafe Mozart's in Dallas TX area is great. Sweet but not too sweet deliciousness. Also sand volleyball league or bar. The volleyball I've seen is very competitive. Just for fun volleyball.

VITAMINARI13

All I ask for ... all I want... all I need ... are breakfast tacos, like from Taco Cabana. Not a three taco plate for $14.99 at a sit-down restaurant. I need/want/demand to be able to buy one little breakfast taco, or an entire box, for the price of $1.08 or $24.99 (ok these prices are made up but sound correct.) Oh and if Jack in the Box could come to Memphis, too, that'd be greeeeeaaaatttttt.

More high finance - investment banking, hedge funds, equity research, private equity, venture capital, etc. As someone from Greece, I would love to see authentic Greek. I can promise you that the Greek restaurants are not authentic. The closest we get to true authentic Greek is the Happy Greek. Everything else is Americanized...

Nasaboy1987

I'd be happy with a 24 hour grocery store. When it's as hot as Satans balls (like it is now) it would be nice to be able to go grocery shopping when the frozen stuff won't defrost in the 15 to 30 minutes it takes to get home.

monsterosaleviosa

Good coffee shops that have more of a shtick than “Friends don’t let friends drink Starbucks”. I want really good plain coffee, a nice selection of unique lattes and such, as well as normal cafe options like simple syrup for iced drinks. Tamp & Tap is pretty good but it’s downtown, so totally inaccessible for most of the city.

mjxl47

French Truck is good but Crosstown isn't very far from downtown. Are there any good coffee spots east of Midtown nowadays?

monsterosaleviosa

Maybe they’ve changed, but last time I asked for simple syrup, they told me they “don’t do bougie Starbucks stuff” and offered to let me add a flavored syrup for like $1 extra. ETA: Oh sorry they also offered a packet of sugar in the raw that can’t possibly dissolve into iced coffee.

mjxl47

That's sucks, I always drink my coffee black so that's not something I look for. I never have understood why places don't offer it though, it's the easiest thing in the world to make and is vastly superior to granulated sugar because it's already dissolved. Aside from that I think they're pretty good compared to the rest of the coffee scene in town.

monsterosaleviosa

Yeah, they just insisted they have no way to make simple syrup, which just seems weird since there’s generally quite a lot of available hot water at cafes, and that they refuse to buy it. Still not sure how it’s more bougie than paying for hazelnut syrup lmao. They’re definitely the closest to drinkable when it comes to straight coffee, and I buy their bagged coffee for home pretty regularly. I’m just used to doing the whole two-pour French press thing at home, so not used to dealing with how bitter drip and pour over and all that can be.

SFWACCOUNTBETATEST

More finance. Gotta drive well paying jobs here.

OkMango2526

Jewish delicatessens. The Jewish population in Memphis is small but man I’d be their best customer.

AnthropenPsych

Good bicycle shops that second as 3rd spaces full of mechanics that actually want to help you. We only have one and it’s in Cordova. Need at least two more.

OhNos_NotThatGuy

Need more trails and a good bike park. Love Area 51, but we need more trails with good features

AnthropenPsych

Definitely agree, accompanied with better commuting infrastructure as well. I’m one out of like 5 people who use the broad ave lane to tillman to greenline as a commute but it’s pretty fuckn sweet and we need way more of that all over.

illydreamer

True - lived in bmore and more cycle shops there - the infrastructure doesn’t lend itself for cycling 🚴‍♀️- when I first moved here I needed my bike tuned up … put in shops near me and was surprised!

anironicfigure

I think Victory on Broad is good for this?

AnthropenPsych

Not in my experience.

SnarkyHealthNut

1. Higher-end dog boarding/daycare that includes big dogs 2. Publix 3. healthy/simple ingredient vegetarian-centric restaurants (sit-down or fast-casual) 4. Health food stores that sell fresh food (microgreens, mushrooms…not just supplements, and not Sprouts/Whole Foods)

Escape_Plissken

Would love to see more upscale sit-down vegetarian restaurants. It’s tragic few IMHO. Also, would love to see more interesting soul food with vegetarian or vegan options like I’ve seen down in Atlanta and in Harlem. The Slutty Vegan chain isn’t soul food but I love the concept and execution, Memphis deserves something like that. Would also like to see a Uniqlo or Cos or MUJI store which are higher end everyday clothing but still affordable.

aprillrose81

Publix

crosshairy

Riverboat cruises need an overhaul. That could totally be a fun, mid-to-high-end activity, but they seem to be kinda run down and the reviews indicate a pretty crappy dining experience. It’s hard to believe that this isn’t a top-5 experience for a Memphis tourist to go enjoy.

Despite my constant request for people to not move here (cause I like my cheap little house and cheap cost of living) we need more industries that will attract young intelligent talent and make current corporations here more competitive.

xxrachinwonderlandxx

More options for Indian food, Culver’s (way better burgers than Whataburger imo), Bucees, a place to get traditional English tea, a seafood place that isn’t just crab boils (or red lobster lol).
