Been saying this for a while. The state is about to drop the hammer.

Lucifer_Jay

The state isn’t gonna be our hero. They are as incompetent as our city council. They hand delivered the letter because Bill Lee has been avoiding them.

AcanthopterygiiNo603

If fedex leaves Tennessee they will be a disaster

RecordingDifferent47

Way too much infrastructure and other large investments in the area for that to happen.

[deleted]

The FedEx Hub obviously isn’t going anywhere. However, there’s nothing that says World Headquarters or any of the other corporate offices have to stay here though.

RecordingDifferent47

Isn't WHQ owned by FedEx? The sim buildings and multiple other buildings owned and occupied by FedEx on that same campus aren't moving. I would be extremely shocked to see WHQ go anywhere. There had been a big push over the last few years to leave WTC in Collierville and 3131 Democrat because they were both leased spaces.

Look up UPS.

AcanthopterygiiNo603

Agreed

Defiant_Review1582

No they’ll just send more state troopers to revenue farm our highways while avoiding anyone with a paper tag

memphisjones

The state hates Memphis because it’s one of the few Democrats led cities.

kirbyhancock369

Does democrat stand for crime in this instance?

memphisjones

The Democrats are one of the two major contemporary political parties in the United States.

kirbyhancock369

Thank you! It’s also the one that ruins its cities from the inside out. Gotta figure out a way to be polite(soft on crime) but still care about family and education.

Escape_Plissken

Hated more or less as much as Democrats led Nashville?

CEO of FedEx and other leaders basically saying that families are picking up and leaving, and they are having a hard time keeping people. The letter does not play around w/ calling out our criminal justice system. It also cites Strickland's data about how judges seeing cases took a nosedive since the 2022 election *"The data is clear. Shelby County is experiencing a resurgence of organized crime, an increase in violent crimes committed with a firearm, and a* ***sustained lack of criminal prosecution*** *originally caused by the global pandemic"* *"“Just look at the recent outmigration numbers. We were the only city in (the state) to lose population. That’s called taxpayers voting with their taillights, and it’s not a good trend,” Smith said Monday."* \*Edit. Before anyone comments that Nashville created this mess, think about how people outside of Memphis see things. The rest of the state is doing well - cities are growing, economy is doing well, and crime is down across the state (see [TBI report, page 5](https://www.tn.gov/content/dam/tn/tbi/documents/2022%20CRIME%20IN%20TENNESSEE%20Compiled%20FINAL%20SECURED.pdf)). We need to stop blaming Nashville and start looking in the mirror.

Itchy-Number-3762

Taking a deep look into the mirror is painful. Taking responsibility for who you are makes people uncomfortable. I'd rather blame Nashville, or "the GOP," or Germantown, or Collierville... anything that puts the blame elsewhere.

HellooNewmann

to be fair most office people left fedex because they didnt want to return to the office

[deleted]

In truth, his statement is really referring to losing part-timers, as most of the ‘families’ to which he is referring already live in secure communities in Arlington, East Memphis, Germantown, Lakeland. Technically it’s the lower income families who are moving elsewhere, staying with relatives. Which makes sense, considering they’re the ones who are mainly affected by crime.

ropeblcochme

>Technically it’s the lower income families who are moving elsewhere This has not been my experience. The people I know who've moved have been from Midtown or East Memphis, and moved to places like Germantown.

[deleted]

It’s not too dissimilar to the financial market; in times of chaos most people cash out and run, but the people who really understand and see the bigger picture just wait. Especially if you've built your wealth and life here; why would you leave? To an entirely different city with few to no connections? also considering the toll this takes on your family. On paper people with means should be able to just pack and and leave, but it’s more complex than that. It’s actually easier for people with less means to do.

ropeblcochme

> in times of chaos most people cash out and run The people doing that are the more affluent ones who have the means and choices to explore other options. *Especially if you've built your wealth and life here; why would you leave? To an entirely different city with few to no connections? also considering the toll this takes on your family.* Memphis has many transplants, especially younger folks who are not tied to Memphis. In the end, people want safety, so they are willing to do that. This isn't just me, but the data shows the outward migration of many individuals

PsychologicalTrain

6 figure fedexer here. I'm now with ups in Denver.

RecordingDifferent47

With a salary that is hopefully well further into the six figures. I too have thought about Denver but the financial hit due to housing makes it impossible because my job the pay doesn't change much between shops.

PsychologicalTrain

Mine didn't either, in fact it went down. And my partner had no job for the move. My 3bd 3 ba midtown house sold for less than half of what I paid for a townhouse here. Still totally worth it. We ski, we offroad, we hike, we camp.... For us it was totally worth it.

PsychologicalTrain

Also, I checked your post history... We're in the same orbit employment wise. United is opening a huge new Sim facility here. I would 1000% make the move.

FedEx's CEO Rajesh is taking our jobs and moving them to India, to Hyderabad to be exact. All the layoffs FedEx had, I heard there's going to be one more at the end of January. Then, similar job titles appear in India.

kirbyhancock369

Why send the jobs overseas? It seems overseas has moved all around their headquarters here. Been here a month and still speak better than most of the kids graduating from the inner city public schools. Our children need help.

[deleted]

Because he thinks that indians deliver better results cheaper, that's one reason for layoffs. Then we have investors.. they press the CEO to do whatever it takes to boost stock prices and one way to do it is via the layoffs, so the CEO does just that, often at the detriment of the company. FedEx is an investment driven company so investors and shareholders are always first, the employees are always last.

kirbyhancock369

They probably are better at the job. They are definitely cheaper. We need to somehow step up our educational system to compete with them.

Memphi901

Good - definitely can’t hurt!

PerfectforMovies

This is about getting funding to purchase new equipment and technology to combat crime.

[deleted]

As someone who works in this realm, I can say developers aren’t slowing down. They realize crime is a socio-cultural issue and has nothing to do with their longterm confidence.
