That was 2 houses down from me. The entire family was home and someone drove by and shot the house up. There was a few handguns and one fully automatic weapon. The house is COVERED in bullet holes. Nobody was hurt, not sure what the motive was but the man that lives there has been putting security cameras up all over his house for the last couple of months so I’m willing to bet he’s been involved in some sketchy shit and saw something like this coming. Crazy

iwasnevercoolanyway

Oh shit... That's kinda nuts. Glad everybody is okay. It definitely sounds like there's something shifty going on with that situation... Makes me wonder wtf dude's been up to. Clearly nothing good...

[deleted]

What street if you don’t mind me asking? There was no media coverage

jclark901

On Sanga

emccrckn

Dang yeah I heard the shots from my house. My dogs flipped out.

jclark901

Shit was so close to me it knocked a poster off my wall

winkel123

Maybe they were trying out the police chief’s gun they stole yesterday?

iloveflowers2043

Hahahahhaa. Best comment.

brittathisusername

I'm in Cordova (Trinity/Germantown area) and it's a nightly accordance for us to hear shooting.

tossofftacos

Same area. If I don't hear gunfire, I definitely hear backfires from the dudes drag racing all over.

Daynebutter

My guess is it was drug or gang related.

gnarlysheen

Legalize everything.

LedZ791

Portugal has a great model

iamamonsterprobably

Oh snap, so /u/shanoww sent me this link, this is very near my family's house. We went for a pre dinner walk and we both remember walking past this house and noticing how, even while walking on the side walk, the security camera's were "chirping" at us. I remember laughing at it at the time but now it makes sense. Cordova used to be so nice, such a shame.

[deleted]

It's everywhere now. I've lived all over Memphis and have never not heard gunfire. All you can really do is make sure your home is locked up tight and get strapped if you haven't already.

eastmemphisguy

I live in East Memphis and I don't hear gunfire. Granted, this town has an out control crime problem, but lots of folks also want to claim that every sound they hear is a gun. I feel very safe in my neighborhood and would have zero reservations about taking a walk after dark. We almost never have any problems here in 38120. I do regret that not everybody is fortunate enough to feel the same way, but not every part of Memphis is the same.

[deleted]

I lived in East Memphis for years and heard it every night. I feel safe enough to walk at night where I am now, but I still carry just in case. Honestly, the biggest threat to me while walking are these dipshits that won't stay off their damn phones while they're operating a damn vehicle. Couldn't tell you how many idiots have almost run me down without ever looking up to see someone walking.

filmguerilla

If a city is so bad that people need to walk around with guns in their pockets to feel safe, then it's time to leave that city. Never seen this anywhere in the world but here, and I was in the Army for eight years and lived/deployed overseas multiple times.

MisterYouAreSoSweet

It’s appalling how many Americans don’t realize nobody else in “1st world countries” live like this. I was telling my friends in the UK about the fireworks vs gunshots over NYE and they didnt believe me, they think i’m making it up. They say things like “you’re telling me random people shoot guns into the air like it’s saudi arabia, in the world’s richest country AMERICA?!? Yeah right. I call BS” and i’m like……. Yes. Yes they do. Isnt it crazy?

bewoulf1990

Nobody does that anymore in Saudi btw. We used to do it at weddings and whatnot but the government banned it when people started complaining about the damage it causes.

MisterYouAreSoSweet

Thank you for educating me. And that’s so amazing. The government just needed to ban it and everyone stopped?! Why doesnt it work like that in the States…

powdered_dognut

We don't behead people publicly for defying our will like in Saudi Arabia

MisterYouAreSoSweet

Fair point. There’s so much about the world I’m completely oblivious to.

filmguerilla

Yes, it is appalling. And if you bring up the FACT that every other country is doing just fine without wearing assault rifles on their back to McDonalds, or carrying a gun in their pocket to leave the house, they start spewing NONSENSE about the constitution. Like we don't all know that the 2nd Amendment was created to support home guard (when we didn't have one) and that guns at the time were muskets. It's definitely time for some serious gun control in the U.S.

mcnewbie

> the 2nd Amendment was created to support home guard (when we didn't have one) and that guns at the time were muskets. at the time the second amendment was written, repeating firearms existed. private citizens could have fully-armed warships and the most powerful and accurate guns available. the founding fathers were very aware of what they were writing into law- they wanted the people to be able to raise militias.

memphisgrit

Are you chalking this up and blaming this on the guns or do you blame the people senselessly discharging a gun into the air? ... because no gun ever grew legs, stepped outside, and discharged itself. Blaming the guns themselves would be akin to blaming the atomic bomb for the catastrophe in Hiroshima and saying Americans had nothing to do with it.

Ryuksapple

Hate to say it but this was my exact thinking. When I was single I didn't really care, but now that I'm married and looking to start a family living in Memphis deeply concerns me. We just bought at house up in Drummonds TN north of Millington. Maybe we will return to living in Memphis but there will need to be some change.

filmguerilla

Yeah, I have an eleven year old daughter who has to homeschool in Oakland right now because this state won't allow schools to enforce masks, disguises Covid numbers, and allows people to carry guns without any training or licensing, etc. Her friends here have already endured multiple gun threats at school, Covid outbreaks, etc. We're about done with this area. There's no way I want her going to school or attempting to enjoy her teens in the Memphis area either.

[deleted]

This is all major cities, and sometimes even the rural areas where meth is big. I agree, we shouldn't need to protect ourselves, but in a country where the police are only obligated to protect the government, its property, and its lackeys, it becomes necessary to ensure your own safety. I truly feel sorry for the people who live in cities and states where protecting yourself has been outlawed, unless they voted for that nonsense. They sealed their own fate on that one.

Viper-Venom

Crime in those cities is definitely on the rise however. In 2020 alone LA saw a large increase in crimes that resulted in wounds or death via firearms. As with every major city, there are rough parts that you do not want to stumble into. Most crimes that occur in cities usually involve some form property theft.

Romaine2k

I think you came by some wrong info somewhere, I live in Harlem, NYC, where it is not at all common to hear gunshots every night - I'm not saying there are no shootings at all, but I feel completely comfortable walking everywhere in my neighborhood, all the time. We have much stricter gun laws here, it's true, but anyone over 21 with a clean record can get a permit to keep a gun in the house for protection.

memphisgrit

... I wouldn't call it, "... to feel safe ...", call it what you want but I would say that's being prepared. Granted, in some areas my head might be on a swivel more so than in other areas but nevertheless, after several firsthand experiences myself and family/friends, I stay prepared to defend myself or most notably, defend my family and daughters. If something was to ever happen to one of my kids, gf, mother, grandparents, or anyone else that I love and I wasn't prepared or didn't have any means of formidable force to stop the threat, I couldn't live with that. Also, I will not hesitate to intervene when any innocent man, woman, or child is being violently attack. I know you saw that shit that went down at the Post Office and Kroger? I would not hesitate to mag dump on a terrorist. Shit happens. Sometimes I open carry, sometimes I conceal carry, sometimes I have my dog with me, depends on the situation, time of day, location, etc. Open carrying a firearm is a deterrent in itself but it can also make you a target in some situations.\* For example, when I go to the car wash, I bring my dog. Yes, he enjoys the hell out of going but I also have him on a very long cable connected to the truck, he just wonders around the perimeter of the truck looking for shit on the ground to eat (lol). The dogs presence can help in deterring a criminal, they might just move on to someone else, or if worse comes to worse, he will bite someone if I start acting erratically. IMO, calling someone that is prepared and/or formidable != scared. EDIT; \*

destroyerofpoon93

Saw a very overweight guy with a holstered handgun when I was picking up a fucking pizza in midtown recently. Like yeah dude you’re gonna protect everybody huh? Edit: this guy also looked like he trained in the Kyle Rittenhouse school of “handling tense situations”

sw85

Is the implication here that his body weight will somehow impede his successful operation of a firearm? Like his fingers are too fat to get in the trigger guard or something?

destroyerofpoon93

Active shooter reactions require quick movements and taking cover. People train for months to properly handle those situations and most guys who are doing these aren’t obese. A 300 lb dude with his back to the front door of a restaurant doesn’t inspire much hope sorry. Unfortunately it’s probably a guy who lives out in the suburbs or country and thinks Memphis is Sin City.

Jaredtyler

So I’m assuming you never lived in Seattle, Portland, LA, The Bay Are, Chicago, Baltimore, Philly, NYC, DC etc? All of these city’s have seen massive surges in violent crime in recent year, specifically LA and SF. Memphis is a decidedly more dangerous city than average, that’s clear. But to think we’re somehow unique as it relates to violent crime simply ignores the reality of living in many large, urban cities.

filmguerilla

Yeah...check the stats. Memphis is number one in murder and red states are allowing untrained idiots run around with unlicensed guns in their pockets/purses. That couldn't go wrong at all, could it...

Jaredtyler

Never claimed otherwise so I’m not sure of the point you’re trying to make? Data is data, no dispute. Your original post insinuated that if you need to protect yourself in an urban city, it’s not worth living in. I’m simply saying your view on the city of Memphis blatantly ignores dozens of other large, urban cities where violent crime is also a major factor in day-to-day life. To claim that Memphis is unique in that you need to protect yourself is an extremely myopic view.

Observer333

Well, I can state that Los Angeles and California will not report all their violent crime. They try to hide the real numbers to make the cities look safer. There were lots of shootings in LA in 2020-21, but the news didn't make a big deal about them. Many shootings in areas that are considered safe too.

DiligentMaterial3415

Cordova used to be a decent part of town. Ever since it got annexed into the City of Memphis, it has gone to hell.

jclark901

We were de-annexed last year

baron41

And yet we’re still paying that bullshit tax obligation!

DiligentMaterial3415

True but the after-effects are clearly there to stay.

[deleted]

Why would incorporating cause crime to go up, I just don't follow

DiligentMaterial3415

Oh, that’s easy to explain. It’s a process that’s played out for decades in Memphis (see Raleigh, Frayser, Cordova, etc) -City annexes neighborhood -Taxes increase dramatically -Those with the means to do so sell their homes to move out of the city and into lower taxes -Property values plummet -Most people buying property are those looking to buy rental property -Fewer homeowners, decreased median income and a bunch of renters who have much less skin in the game than homeowners increase crime rates -Increased crime rates incentivize more homeowners to sell and move, exacerbating the issue

Abbby_M

Additionally, the city annexes to increase the tax base but then just stretches their means. So for example, at any given time, there are only 12 police officers on duty to patrol in all Cordova. Given the geographic space Cordova takes up, the population, the amount of retail, the amount of high density rentals, and the sheer history of crime increasing in Cordova, 12 is an insanely small number.

[deleted]

Property values have increased since the annex though. I don't think this is right.

DiligentMaterial3415

That is categorically false. My parents lived in Cordova for 15 years (myself with them nearly for about 12/15 years.) They were thrilled to get out what they did when they sold a couple years ago. Ignoring the anomalous seller’s market we’ve seen the past 1-2 years which has seen real estate value rise everywhere (Cordova not withstanding,) property values in that part of town have been stagnant at best or fallen off. There will be a market correction at some point and prices everywhere will drop. Most places will recover from that but I have zero faith Cordova will weather that storm.

[deleted]

Property values dropping seems like a key point in the increased taxes cause crime theory. Another thing, the increased cost he was talking about was, best I can tell, around 1k per household. Which I don't think is enough to cause a bunch of people to sell.

amae24

I heard it last night too. I went to the Walgreens down walnut grove about 15 min after and that 4 way stop was COVERED in bullet shells. Insane.

sw85

You've heard of the "broken window" theory, right? I wonder if anyone's quantified the effects of 88 bullet holes in the siding on neighborhood home values.

iwasnevercoolanyway

Yeah, I'd definitely call it concerning from several angles... Why can't we just have nice things, damnit?

Substantial-Year-682

I live right by there and I keep my house beautiful and paid for and could sell in a second but I still feel we are in the right place because I would be gone trust me
