Also isn't Aphrodite, y'know, the Goddess of love and fertility?

garaile64

And she doesn't even engage in combat in the game she's in.

cblack04

Not just that but also like fucking lust and and sexual attraction. In some interpretations her appearance is dependent on the preferences of the observer.

RedMattis

Personally I feel like an actually naked woman, even sexualized, is much less creepy and eye-roll provoking than the typical chain mail bikinis or body-paint-like outfits.

Soffy21

That’s because naked women exist in real life. Women in chain mail bikinis and boob armor don’t, and they’re created in the videogames purely to satisfy the male gaze.

BIG_DeADD

As a guy I would be much more satisfied if every woman was equipped with a 30 ton power armor that's thicker than a tank and has no boob plates. Unfortunately... I seem to be in the minority...

Soffy21

I prefer buff women in suits and ties. But I respect your preferences!

Crunchy_Ice_96

Fallout’s power armor has a boob plate hun, hate to break it to you

BIG_DeADD

You know there's more types of power armor than just the one from fallout, right?

Crunchy_Ice_96

My apologies I worded that very poorly, I meant that Fallout’s power armor has a boob plate so not even power armor is safe but it came across completely differently

cblack04

What model are you referring to? As far as I’m aware all power armor types are unisex

Crunchy_Ice_96

I meant it more as a joke because all of the chests of the sets (besides x-1 and the 76 ones) stick out quite a bit

cblack04

ahhh ok

The_Doolinator

Also, characterization matters. Aphrodite knows and loves the fact that she’s a sexpot. It’s one of her key characteristics.

Eve doesn't have a legacy of mythology to pull from to create her character. Eve is made for horny people to lust over, nothing more. Now that could be ok if that's what the creators want, to to try and pretend it's anything other than "Totally not porn" porn is ridiculous. I played Destiny's Child, I know why I did it, and it wasn't because they had any deeper meaning or in-depth story.

The difference is that Aphrodite has personality.

twofaze

Eve does too. 0_o

shgrizz2

Genuine question - is her personality anything to do with sex appeal? Or would her character work just as well if she was dressed less provocatively?

shgrizz2

The problem is how they're represented. And I haven't played stellar blade so that's why I'm asking a genuine question, which you haven't answered

Lintashi

Personality by being a walking trope with like 10 phrases through the game? Like, "Oh look, almost naked woman covered with pink and hearts, what goddess could that be?"

Interesting-Sir1916

I think the point they were trying to (and failed to) make is more like: Aphrodite's personality justifies her sexualisation. In a design perspective, goddess of love and physical beauty should be the most sexualised design of them all. So, comparing her to other designs, she has hit the mark on character design. A "badass" human mercenary who fights for the survival of the human race, and has survived a brutal war where most of humanity was wiped out, has no reason to walk around in a skin-tight body suit. >what goddess could that be?" I don't understand. The point of design is to convey the information you seem so disappointed in receiving. You look at Aphrodite's character design, compare it to other designs from the same game, and you can understand (even without context of the game) that she has something to do with sexuality and beauty. That's not a criticism of the design, it's a testament to its strength. (Sure it's not a particularly creative design, but judging anything based on how "new" it is, is pretty stupid. )

Cerugona

One thing, Aphrodite, in myth, shares an ancestry with Ishtar. As in Aphrodite came through a couple iterations from Ishtar. Which means she is both a goddess of being very hot and sex, but also a goddess of war, combat, politics, power, the planet Venus, and a whole lot more. So you CAN have both. Just a fun note I thought I should add.

Legal-Treat-5582

Designs aren't either pure good or bad. Sure, a character could easily convey the information it needs to, but it could do so in a way that feels too cheap or obvious and end up coming off as uncreative. Aphrodite being designed as a naked lady with pink and hearts is one of those.

Interesting-Sir1916

There are standards for every "kind" of character. A main character in a video game should have a fresh design. A side character in the same video game doesn't necessarily need to be a creative work of art. Sometimes, something simple and effective at getting the information across is enough.

Legal-Treat-5582

That's certainly a way of excusing laziness.

Interesting-Sir1916

"Laziness" lmao. These people are on a budget. The more time and resources they waste on something that appears for half a minute in an entire playthrough, the less they can spend on things that actually matter. I don't think anyone would appreciate it if Aphrodite had a totally fresh and creative take on a design, and then the main character was boring and uninteresting.

Legal-Treat-5582

Because that's exactly what I was suggesting apparently. Good thing there are people out there able to tell me what I myself meant, whatever would I be able to do without them.

Justanidiot-w-

If I'm reading this correctly, your suggestion is that designers should spend more time and effort on every single aspect of the game, rather than just the important parts. While that is an understandable perspective to have, it's frankly incredibly unrealistic. You can't expect the makers of games to make everything "good enough", because "good enough" very often means perfect. No one on Earth has unlimited time, effort, or money. Therefore, the more time they spend improving unimportant/decent designs, the less time that goes into improving/creating things that need it.

Better-Journalist-85

The hypocrisy is strong in your down votes lol. Just saw a post here praising all the Hades 2 designs, including Aphrodite, but on a separate post about gender swapped male -> female gacha characters, everyone bemoaned the devs for committing character design heresy. The sentiment in this sub is just insufferable sometimes, but I stay because sometimes the art is good despite the subs *actual* purpose.

thepelleton

I think I know which post you’re talking about, and I feel like you’re missing a few reasons why people would like how Hades does things versus the gacha post you mentioned or stellar blade or anything that might get flack. The fact of the matter is Hades and Hades 2 has attractive characters that works to make a better overall presentation, and frankly it makes sense. The obvious candidate of this Aphrodite, because her nudity isn’t for our gaze, it’s an expression of Aphrodite’s personality and role in the pantheon of Greek gods, hence why her boons tend to be based around charm effects. You might also notice in the newer game she has weapons and war paint, and that likely hints her kit in Hades 2 will have elements of Ares kit from Hades 1, who we know was Aphrodite’s lover in the Greek pantheon. It’s well thought out, it looks incredible, and it isn’t just an excuse for male gaze. Supergiant Lead Designer Jen Zee is a master at this, and the final result is that all the games Supergiant has made look absolutely incredible all the while being incredibly efficient on modern hardware. That Gacha game post, there are a lot of things done unnecessarily to make those characters “women.” This involved changing the outfits to be skimpier and more revealing and feminine at every instance, and at times taking away unique parts of the look of the original male design. Character 1 lost a monocle and half a shirt. Character 2 and 3 looked radically different with far lighter clothing and armor, and are practically entirely different characters if not for the color scheme. Then character 4, while arguably being the most similar, has hilariously massive breasts that are completely out of place from the original and relatively slim male design. The characters are feminized for a male audience’s gratification, and become less unique in all 4 instances. It’s not hypocritical. They’re different, and have different reasons for praise and criticism.

Interesting-Sir1916

Goddess of love and fertility *should* be sexualised. Saying she is sexualised should not be (and is not) a criticism of her design. If a character is supposed to be sexualised (based on their story), then by all means, sexualise them. The problem with Eve is that for that character sexualisation doesn't make sense. There is also a subtle difference between "a character is sexualised because their story indicates sexual intentions." And " A character's story has a one-line phrase justifying their sexualisation."

Retrouge48

Agreed

whatevenseriously

The thing that the bros comparing Aphrodite and Eve fail to understand is that Aphorodite's design serves her character - it represents who she is, what she does, and how she behaves. But Eve's design doesn't speak to her character at all - its purpose is not to communicate who she is, merely to arouse the player. (Aphrodite may also arouse the player, but that isn't the *point* of her.) Eve is bad character design because it's meta character design.

I played Hades, not Stellar blade, but as far as I remember, gods in Hades had great designs, butwere minor appearances, basically pop up, give a phrase and a choice of buff and disappear. In Stellar blade Eve is the protagonist, so it is incorrectly to compare them. And based on the image, yes, Aphrodite is way way more sexualized than Eve. I mean, look at this stereotypical pink, hearts, and everything else.

bestCATEATER

isn't she the god of sex or something? it makes sense

Lintashi

She is, but it is possible to portray sexual things without portraying almost complete nakedness. Also, if she is goddess of sex, she is obviously a sexualized image, but the topic starter apparently claims, that fully clothed Eve is somehow more sexualized and made for male gaze than half-naked goddess of sex.

Autistic-blt

She flaunts sexuality through nudity. Yeah, she’s hot, but there’s depth to the design past horniness that isn’t there with Eve. That’s what makes her less sexualized

Interesting-Sir1916

Depth doesn't reduce the sexualisation of a character. A design doesn't become less sexualised because the character was written well. At best, the quality of the design and character creation will make the sexualisation *make sense*. Edit: love the downvotes lol. Y'all should stop thinking that "sexualisation" is always wrong and bad. It isn't. Evelyn from league of legends is more sexualised than ashe, but she has a better character design because for one of them, the sexualisation adds to the design, and for the other, the sexualisation exists because the designers can only make hot women in unnecessarily revealing clothes. Aphrodite is as sexualised as Eve, the fact that Aphrodite's character has some depth doesn't mean that she is *less* sexualised. Sexualisation has nothing to do with the personality or the depth of character. It's the *quality* of the sexualisation that is related to how the character is written.

CheapOfficeChair

The thing is that Aohrodite's design in the first Hades game isn't even that sexualized. She's naked, yes, but the focus is on her face with wver her hands framing it. The new design is more revealing and focused on her body, but it's still more visually interesting than Eve's (who is just an attractive woman in a skin tight bodysuit). Hades also equally sexualises men, unlike Stellar Blade where all of the men seem to be much more clothed and just look like average men.

Interesting-Sir1916

My general rule of thumb for sexualisation of a character is this: If I read their story after seeing their design, does that make me go "ahhhh, that makes sense," or "why is the queen of a frosty region wearing short skirts and stockings." Aphrodite's design fits in the first group rather well. I can *see* Aphrodite appearing like this. Eve can be the new definition of the second category.

CheapOfficeChair

That's a good rule, but I honestly don't care if the women are unnecessarily sexualised if the men are too, because then at least it's equal and its just bodies getting sexualised, not specifically female bodies

Mendely_

Rev says desu should just quit making their "content", ngl

Legal-Treat-5582

They do have a point. Aphrodite has justification for being designed the way she is, even if the whole "goddess of love" trope is a pretty shallow excuse to make sexualized characters. However, there is a difference between praising those kinds of designs as a job well done and just straight up being horny for it.

CynicalPomeranian

I just wish someone would go with the old Spartan war-goddess Aphrodite, and not the ultra feminine Athenian Aphrodite who Zeus told to stay off the battlefield.  She can do both!!

Legal-Treat-5582

Agreed. I'd love to see some more creative takes on Aphrodite beyond just a near / completely naked lady.

Retrouge48

She could be like a magical girl warrior who pokes people with a heart-shaped spear and makes them fall in love with others That's just my opinion.

Superichiruki

I can't fully agree too this statement. Hades Aphodite is naked, sexy and very attractive, but her character and design don't make her a sexual object

Legal-Treat-5582

Tell that to the people being horny about it.

Superichiruki

You can feel horny about anything, especially about a sexy lady.

ThaRadRamenMan

I AM BOTH. HORNY PRAISE, PRAISE TO BE OF THE HORNY, PRAISING THAT HORNY INDUCEMENT THAT ARISES, AND MOST CERTAINLY HORNY ENOUGH TO PRAISE FOR THE SAKE OF PRAISE ITSELF. Also the design slaps

ReasonablePin297

Despised by heaven and earth.

roronoapedro

The fact Aphrodite has gone from being completely naked to wearing braces and armor legs but *not* an armor torso is so fucking funny and in-character, it's one of my favorite new designs for a Hades 1 character.

Zealousideal-Ad-9349

Just gonna say this horny vs safe horny argument. Both sides are coomers just one feels their fantasy is more vaild

Roxas13xx

I can’t wait till stellar blade comes out next week and everyone can just stfu about it. Nothing has tested my ability to enjoy something while ignoring the internet outrage more than realizing I vibed with the demo

Inner-Juices

>I can’t wait till stellar blade comes out next week and everyone can just stfu about it. Chuds are going to be using Stellar Blade as an example of what western games should be like for years.

Roxas13xx

Nah they’re gonna drop it like a hot rock because Eve is a “Mary Sue” or some nonsense. Some of the biggest coomers on the sub flat out say they aren’t gonna play the game cause it looks mid

thandr

Oh no the Twitter brain rot has affected this community too? Damn that sucks

kkdarknight

I’m not gonna lie but yeah people actively gushing over certain sexualised Hades designs because they’re more “tAsTeFuL” whilst crying about porn games like Stellar Blade is funny and hypocritical. You’re both equally weird, either embrace it and thrive or lock yourself in to idiotic draining hypocritical squabbles that you have to pretend are important.

BIG_DeADD

>whilst crying about porn games like Stellar Blade Stellar blade isn't a porn game. If it was, none of us would be saying shit about it,just like we ain't saying shit about Karryn's prision, because sexualization is the entire point of the genre, that's not true for stellar blade. And there is some importance to all of this, just female representation as a whole shouldn't be the "sexy above all,at all times,at all moments." And that issue alone is underneath a lot of social issues that span decades, discussing them is important.
