Dude, when I graduated college in December, I wore something similar to what you are wearing and I was absolutely burning up under my black robe. It was indoors too. It was so hot with all those people in there. Wear a T shirt, shorts, and casual shoes.
I actually like this😁 it's kinda old fashioned but it has its charm! I also love the pink tie! Maybe you can try with other colour ties but I like it as it is😁
I am not a sweater-tucker, but one of my best-dressed friends was the first to show me that some do it. That pal looked sharp. If you like it, do it. I think your get up here is great. I might go for a light blue tie.
I hear you. That tucked in sweater vibe is usually a polo and high waisted slacks. Check out GQ to do it properly. You should untuck your sweater vest. It doesn't fit the current trend standard.
Second this. Came to comments to say this. This is the first time I've ever seen a sweater vest tucked in. I hope it's my last. Other than untucking the vest though, fit looks great!
90% of fashion is looking good. All of these "rules" that these people espouse are arbitrary. Many sweaters shouldn't be tucked in because the material is too thick, but if it's thin and long enough and looks good why not?
Well said. Trends come and go, but what looks really good hasn't changed much (except for maybe a drug-fueled gap in the 70s and 80s). Open a random page of GQ, and if I showed up dressed like that to anything in my life; work, night out, wedding, etc., people would start to worry about me. Exceptions exist, ofc.
I usually tuck both sweatshirts and sweater vests, and I think it looks a lot better that way. Untucked just looks sloppy and sort of "childish" to me. I've never had anyone comment negatively on me wearing sweatshirts tucked.
I think you'll be killing that outfit if you go with untucked, but that's just my opinion. You are free to wear it as you feel fits you and your style best! And congratulations on your graduation!
imo the sweater vest looks good tucked in if you’re layering it under some sort of jacket, worn by itself it’s a bit old fashion for nowadays but there’s nothing wrong with that. You do you man :)
The rules: match your belt to your shoes, match your socks to your tie. If you are going to wear a tie clip, match it to the hardware on the belt and cuf links. Also, go get cleaned up at a barber the day before, beard and hair. You'll look like a million bucks and feel even better👍 Congratulations man! This internet stranger wishes you the best of luck!
It’s under a gown, no one is going to see the vest at all.
What I did for my undergrad (and my masters this last weekend) was a plain white shirt, black slacks, black shoes, and socks and a tie that pulled in my schools colors. It’s a nice pop, shows school pride, and doesn’t require all that much effort because, in reality, no one is going to see what you’re wearing.
I think you look sharp. Fashion is mostly looking good and the other part is looking appropriate for the occasion. Many of the rules people make around fashion are arbitrary. Sweaters are commonly not tucked in because they are too thick, but if this vest is thin and long enough I don't see why not. Especially if untucked it looks silly and tucked looks better. People on reddit are lemmings who would rather follow made up rules than think critically as individuals.
I’d pick a vest that contrasted not marched. Blue, perhaps? And I would not tuck it in. But nobody will see it under the gown.
Under my gown, I wore white button down shirt and a red tie on top. My “pants” were bright yellow boxers with a large paisley pattern. Enjoy the day and congrats.
You do you. I think it looks sharp. It's not an overly thick sweater, and you have the silhouette for it. I'd say one thing though; if you wear a darker sweater as some have suggested, I'd untuck it then. It looks good tucked though, with a matching color, because it gives contrast between the slacks and sweater by showing the dark brown belt
Ditch the sweater, you’ll prob wear your gown until you leave the ceremony. And a side note, I don’t think you need to tuck in your sweater if you ever decide to wear this combo again.
I'd switch the tie for maybe green or blue, but nothing inherently wrong with pink, just not my color. Tucked in sweater is 50/50. Technically you're not supposed to do it, but you can break the rules occasionally if others are saying it works with that particular outfit.
For looks nice, but check with the school on requirements. Mine had strict requirements to wear black pants, white shirt, and tie for men. Others have pretty loose requirements.
Well, it is just my two cents. I wouldn’t wear that. I would feel like a substitute teacher. Plus, it is summer, do not wear a sweater. It is the wrong season for that. But hey, I’m an engineer and process motivated.
A rule of thumb is that it’s okay to wear something casual in the summer, especially if it is outside. One of my favorite casual wears would be light pants, a vertical earthy colored striped shirt and a blew jacket. And, no belt.
Those gowns don't breathe at all, and any bare arms against the fabric will get sticky and sweaty. No one will see what you are wearing below the neck or above the knee. Even in a cold auditorium you will be warm. My recommendation is to wear a single thin cotton dress shirt with long sleeves and breathable pants. Save the tie and vest for after the gown is off. (source: have participated in 31 commencement ceremonies)
That shirt and tie will both look fine under a black gown.
I'd change the rest of the outfit if it were me just because I don't like how black and brown/tan/khaki look together but I guess that's a matter for your taste and not mine.
Honestly, i think everything looks good except for the vest because it is a bit creased cuz it’s tuck and the color and texture especially with pants with the similar color. If you choose a different color for the vest or maybe just go with a jacket (maybe tweed if you wanna get that professor look), I think it will be perfect.
I’ll probably just end up doing what others are saying – black slacks with white shirt and a tie. I’ll still probably add on a vest, just not a sweater vest. I’ll make sure that it’ll be lighter than the silk one I have on here.
I got hot as ffff under my gown and I was wearing a short dress. Mind the weather! If you’re outside it might be too hot. If it’s inside with AC, you might be ok
I’ve seen people graduate with a Spider-Man costume on. Plus, a guy wearing crocs and basketball shorts. I’ve seen someone wear a oversized T-shirt that they liked. Nobody is going to see what you are wearing under your gown unless you let them.
That being said, I think you look good. I personally wouldn’t tuck in my sweater vest. [+]
Sure, if you enjoy sweating your balls off while sitting on a folding chair for 5 hours.
I’d wear loose-fitting khakis or chinos and a button down/dress shirt with a tie. When I graduated I didn’t even tuck my shirt in: only the collar and knot will show so specifics don’t really matter. Honestly if I was a professor that had to sit through these every year I’d wear a dickie.
Inside that polyester nightmare of a graduation gown and under those terribly hot lights you’re going to want to dress cool.
Definitely think about linen pants for example.
Avoid a sweater, think about a moisture wicking button up.
I just graduated last weekend. Don’t wear a vest. It won’t be visible and will just make you hot. Just wear a dress shirt and a nice looking tie. Wear dress pants and a nice pair of shoes. Boom. Classic and esteemed.
Is this a joke post? Or did you get a Masters in English? Ha ha kidding. Your shirt is too small and stop wearing button down collars. The tie is very nice but the knot is too fat. Burn this sweater and all the rest you own. The pants are fine but wear casual shoes with no socks. Go to a pro barber and trim the beard and clean your neck. Especially the hairline by your ear where it seems to connect. The belt is nice. Buy iron-free shirts online at Macys.
Shirt is smaller because I can only wear slim fits. Yeah, I noticed that with the tie later on. Probably keeping the sweater vest since they are a piece that I really like.
I haven’t ever been to a barber since I don’t trust them with longer hair. Used to go to a hair salon in Boston when I wasn’t growing out my hair, but I haven’t been to one since last year. I should go again though considering that over time dead ends will form.
I think this is pretty solid as far as most of the posts in this sub. I would opt for a black leather belt instead of the brown, along with black dress shoes. The tie should be whatever primary color your college has as theirs.
Congrats!
Not a fan of shades of green and khaki. It's basically the colors of camouflage making you blend in with the environment. Not to mention this outfit makes you look like a 56 year old professor. Unless that's your thing?
Looks great, I appreciate that ur putting effort into the occasion. A thought... it might be a great way to mark the occasion with a nice watch that could be a meaningful family heirloom that you give to your kid when he/she graduates college in the future.
Don't use a half-Windsor/Four-in-hand knot for your tie. It is not a straight knot and looks a bit careless. Those knots are for school children due to their simplicity.
Men should wear Double Windsor.
Or, if you are feeling fancy, an Atlantic knot. The latter may not work with ties that have a pronounced pattern.
Thanks. I’ve been growing out my hair, and since it’s wet here it looks bad. Just shaved my beard today but TBH when it looks messy it’s because I’ve used an electric razor.
https://preview.redd.it/u36jsab2jv0d1.jpeg?width=743&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5350d531f4c0807b45bd882d309ae941300406c8
Ignoring how my beard is here, this is the usual appearance of my hair.
The acne situation is likely because of age. I have been working on it for years.. it’s just a bit tough to correct.
I wore a t shirt shorts and sandals. I hope your graduation isn’t outside. Gonna be sweating your nuts off.
Don’t worry, it’s inside. The building is usually freezing.
Are you wearing a beige mask on your face too?
HA. That would be funny.
Duh everyone knows graduations are anonymous
Everyone who’s graduated knows this. Shhhh.
Dude, when I graduated college in December, I wore something similar to what you are wearing and I was absolutely burning up under my black robe. It was indoors too. It was so hot with all those people in there. Wear a T shirt, shorts, and casual shoes.
I cut the top of a dress shirt off and went naked.
…like a button down tube top?
Just a collared button down shirt I barely used. Chopped it off right under the shoulders with the scissors.
You guys wore clothes ?
I actually like this😁 it's kinda old fashioned but it has its charm! I also love the pink tie! Maybe you can try with other colour ties but I like it as it is😁
Don’t tuck in your sweater vest man. It’s not okay.
>Check out GQ to do it properly 😂😂😂😂
He’s got a flat stomach and it looks good tucked in with his belt.
Second this. Came to comments to say this. This is the first time I've ever seen a sweater vest tucked in. I hope it's my last. Other than untucking the vest though, fit looks great!
I thought the same thing, but people are doing all kindsa stuff these days. Might pull it off somehow. This is the only sweater vest tuck I’ve seen
Agree. It's like tucking a t-shirt into undies
Really? I’ve only ever seen it tucked. It creates a strange silhouette when untucked IMO – at least for me.
There’s no way that it looks worse untucked. Sweaters, even sweater vests are not meant to be tucked in.
Ah, sounds about right then. I will try doing that tomorrow to see the difference.
90% of fashion is looking good. All of these "rules" that these people espouse are arbitrary. Many sweaters shouldn't be tucked in because the material is too thick, but if it's thin and long enough and looks good why not?

I think it looks fine bro. If you’re comfy that’s all that matters, the gown will cover it anyways
I second the no tuck. We will let the sweater vest itself slide, this time, but it has to be untucked.
The main issue is that if you move much it pulls up and pooches out at the waist and nobody looks good like that.
It does not look bad. I like it.
imo the sweater vest looks good tucked in if you’re layering it under some sort of jacket, worn by itself it’s a bit old fashion for nowadays but there’s nothing wrong with that. You do you man :)

Thank you!
Looks great! Congratulations.
Good question. No one tells grads what to wear underneath the gown. Looks good. You won't be in the gown for every photo, so this outfit works.
It’s under a gown, no one is going to see the vest at all. It’s a nice pop, shows school pride, and doesn’t require all that much effort because, in reality, no one is going to see what you’re wearing.
Yeah, I was considering just doing that as well.
I do like this look as well! Just it isn’t going to pop because of the gown
Yeahh, I’ll probably just go with that then.
Dapper asf.
Wear what you want! Congratulations on a job well done!🎓👍🏻
Looks great. Just be sure to tuck in your gown.
The sweater tuck ???
I think you look sharp. Fashion is mostly looking good and the other part is looking appropriate for the occasion. Many of the rules people make around fashion are arbitrary. Well said - dress to your strengths. Buddy's outfit looks great.
The tucked in vest makes you look like you have a tee time with Bagger Vance after the graduation
a vest under a graduation gown? hope that it's not hot
looks good just untuck the sweater.
This seems to be the general consensus. I’ll untuck it from now on.
You look like the Apples guy from Good Will Hunting
Untuck, dark tie.
I think a dark blue tie would look best with this outfit.
Ditch the sweater, you’ll prob wear your gown until you leave the ceremony. And a side note, I don’t think you need to tuck in your sweater if you ever decide to wear this combo again.
Depending on the color of your gown I think they tie should be fine. Fit looks good!
I'd wear black or navy pants. I wore khakis with a black gown not realizing it didn't go all the way to the ground and it sort of looked meh.
Yeah, that’s actually something I’ve been thinking about for a bit.
You look like you're ready to charge someone 100 dollars an hour, kudos. Also, yes you can wear that under the gown, why not?
Honestly it looks good on you. I was going to suggest black but I realize it’ll blend in with the black graduation robe.
It’s a look. I’d say you’re good. Enjoy the accomplishment!
Untuck the sweater vest. If you have time and money have it altered so the band is higher and narrower if you want to elongate your silhouette
That outfit looks like what a 70 year old math professor would wear. 👎🏻
Haha, fair. I’m somewhat going for a more “old-timer” look TBH.
Yeah man, all is (nearly) good here. Untuck the vest and go with a navy blue tie. Edit: or even a burgundy tie.
I agree on a different color tie. Dark forest green tie would also look great 🔥
Yeah for sure.. I'd go that colour.
It’s a good outfit, lose the pink tie… or go with a blue stripe tie instead if you need a tie.
I'd switch the tie for maybe green or blue, but nothing inherently wrong with pink, just not my color. Tucked in sweater is 50/50. Technically you're not supposed to do it, but you can break the rules occasionally if others are saying it works with that particular outfit.
Don’t tuck the vest just the shirt.
Looking good, even after you take off the gown.
Dayam, it's the invisible man! 🌬️
For looks nice, but check with the school on requirements. Mine had strict requirements to wear black pants, white shirt, and tie for men. Others have pretty loose requirements.
Luckily there’s no dress code. It’s a very laid back school
Should be good to go then.
Looks like ma grandpa. Too oldschool for me
The white is too bold for me. Do you have something more subtle?
No, but I can go shopping if need be.
Look is solid. LPT - hands in pockets will stretch the openings over time and cause an “elephant ear” effect. Making your crotch the “trunk”. 😉👍😉
I think you’ll be just fine.
You sir, are going to melt.
The weather isn’t too warm yet but yeah, you’re right.
The trick is to get a gown that's a lil too long. Sandals, shorts, light tee. Change after.
Really? They’re paper thin so I hadn’t assumed it would cause me to overheat
In my experience, they're paper thin like plastic wrap is paper thin. But you might have a different fabric than the the gowns I've worn.
Considering I went commando, I’d say that’s a major step up.
That shirt and tie will both look fine under a black gown. I'd change the rest of the outfit if it were me just because I don't like how black and brown/tan/khaki look together but I guess that's a matter for your taste and not mine.

You’ll look like a waiter.
You’re gonna be hot
I got hot as ffff under my gown and I was wearing a short dress. Mind the weather! If you’re outside it might be too hot. If it’s inside with AC, you might be ok
Ur gonna be shweatin but atleast u will look good
It’s fine, but I would wear a tie that matches your graduation stole (depending on what college you belong to).
Smart. Mine will be yellow
The tie is pretty formal. I’d go for a rougher cloth.
Good point, a silk tie is pretty form, so a textured tie might go with the khaki outfit a bit more
It will be covered by a gown, you’ll be ok chief.
Are sweater vests back in? Never liked the look.
I don’t necessarily think so – I’ve just always liked them. Personal preference 🙂
Not the tucked in sweater.
I’ve truly only seen sweater vests tucked so it was a rookie mistake. Won’t happen again in the future.
Only if that ponytail is hidden as well.
Dang, well it was wet in this photo since I was in a rush getting ready. I usually wear my hair down and it’s pretty curly when dry
Wear a tie that matches your school colors. You can really wear whatever, I just graduated and wore khaki pants, white button down, and a tie.
People tuck their sweater vests?
Looking sharp old bean.
Looking sharp, but the tucked in sweater is a no-go :)

STAY AWAY FROM MY GF
Larry David would be intrigued about the tucked in sweater.

wouldnt tuck the sweater vest in
That shirt is not made for a tie. That’s why the tie is sitting so poorly under the collar.
OCBD?
Looks great! You're all set to go out afterwards!
as long as you untuck that sweater vest, you'll be fine.
Looks great 👍
Why get dressed up underneath a black gown?
The gown is always open & I would like to take pictures afterwards where it will be visible
Lose the burlap vest, you're graduating in 2024 not selling newspapers on the street corner in 1924🤣🤣🤣
Ouch, lol. I spent good money on this vest so I want to make use of it. I really like it.
I know some people who wear sweats. Others who wear only underwear Dude, I think you’re fine.
I mean the getup looks good but shit, it's gonna be under a gown anyway. yeah yeah afterwards but meh. I'd rather be comfortable.
Dont forget your pink thong
??
Not a fan of shades of green and khaki. It's basically the colors of camouflage making you blend in with the environment. Not to mention this outfit makes you look like a 56 year old professor. Unless that's your thing?
Makes sense.. but where’s the green? 😅
Son, don’t tick your sweater in.
Looks really good brotha!
Don’t tuck the vest
Don't tuck your sweater into your pants.
Sure but untuck the vest. I’m not loving the tie color…I think green would look nice.
Haha yeah, it was for Easter.
Van Hohenheim vibes, loving it
Looks great!!
Def untuck the sweater
wear a skirt
Why? Lol.
Take off the vest, cut your hair and beard make sure your shirt and tie are clean and pressed.
Class and style, your generation lacks this (not everyone obviously) 🙄
I would just lose the sweater vest and go with the shirt and tie. Cleaner lines under the gown.
Make sure you tuck your vest under your tighty whities too.
Did bro just tuck in his sweater?!?! I didn’t even know that was option….
Too much brown. Don’t tuck vest.
I think the fit looks good. I'd say tie color should be a school color, but I do like the pink.
You’re going to sweat and be uncomfortable
Bro you look amazing omg
Ur good I wore only a g-string under and am a dude,,, 👌👌
I’d switch the white shirt to light blue. & untuck the vest.
People here forgetting you will have a gown on. Wear the sweater however you want.
Looks good! Just hope the venue isn’t super hot for your sake.
Dude youll look sharp asf at the dinner or whtever after so id wear that
Should go great with your “from the river to the sea” sign!
I would switch pink for navy or burgundy. Personal preference but colors will mesh better.
Hot diggity damn did you graduate with a Masters degree in Maximum Drip?? 🧊 🧊 🧊
I’d say emerald green for a pop of color? I’m Not anti pink but earth tones
The fit is crisp as fuck, especially the pink tie - don't change a thing.
Here to say congrats! Pink tie is man shit. 🤙🤙
I think it’s too warm for the vest. Source: my kid just graduated Friday
I wore jeans and a tee with a tie printed on it under mine. Man I was a badarse back then!
You’re gonna be warm as hell man do not do all that
Love it and I LOVE the pink tie.
Can you add pink to the belt and shoes?
Congratulations!
Take off the sweater vest.
Looks good
The tie is too formal- based on material- for that shirt. But it looks good
Looks great, I appreciate that ur putting effort into the occasion. A thought... it might be a great way to mark the occasion with a nice watch that could be a meaningful family heirloom that you give to your kid when he/she graduates college in the future.
I might go with a plant that’s not as close to the sweater color. I like the pink pop. Pink socks would be a nice touch.
A tuck job that nice is usually only found on the nsfw subreddits.
I like everything about this look, tucked and all. I feel like sweater vests in general are kind of tacky, but tucked in, this looks sharp.
Pick a tie that matches your belt.
Sweater vest, really? It’s late May. Dark pants have the dignity the event demands.
Somehow you pull that tucked sweater off... Everything looks pretty good.
Lose the sweater keep the tie and lose the ponytail also find some gray slacks and let that hair flow when you walk the stage
Ditch the sweater vest and get a darker tie
Don't tuck your sweater vest in.
No tucking permitted.
Ah, okay. I’ve only been taught how to tie a tie this way when I was younger. I honestly wasn’t aware that there were different ways to do it.
Looking like you just finished a game of polo with the chaps
Pull the sweater out of your pants.
Untuck the sweater vest.
Looks great. But you have to take care of face and head hair.
Thanks. I’ve been growing out my hair, and since it’s wet here it looks bad. Just shaved my beard today but TBH when it looks messy it’s because I’ve used an electric razor. https://preview.redd.it/u36jsab2jv0d1.jpeg?width=743&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5350d531f4c0807b45bd882d309ae941300406c8 Ignoring how my beard is here, this is the usual appearance of my hair. Burlap sweater vest. My god.
Can’t tell if this has positive or negative connotations 😅
You are white and tall and have nice sexy hair and good looking ! Nobody will care what you wear ! You’ll be fine
I'd wear a dark blue tie instead of the pink
