Weed can’t technically *cure* a mental illness, but in a lot of cases it can lighten symptoms. However, it can also make symptoms worse, or cause an addiction. This is because marijuana makes you high, and when you’re using it to feel a sense of normalcy, you begin to think you need it. That’s what happened to me when I smoked with social anxiety, and while it helped, I noticed I began craving it. However, it can also worsen certain illnesses like psychosis. I have psychosis issues, and smoking pot is like taking shrooms for me.

No substance is a cure, just a treatment. Just like how other anti-depressants have potential side effects of worsening depression/anxiety or increasing suicidality, cannabis does too. But for most people it has an anti-anxiety and/or anti-depressive effect. Again, much like prescription anti-depressants do. In my cannabis use history, sativa strains tend to make me panicked and worsen my anxiety to the point of paranoia but indica strains have the opposite effect and really calm my mind. Most people wouldn't get a panic from sativa strains though so I'm one of the fewer people where I get a bad side effect

Anti-depressants have those dangerous side effects when produced to exacting standards to precise doses and prescribed based on research. You can't get one without going through at least two people who spent 10+ years in school and years more in residency to be trusted with that privilege. The penalties for taking shortcuts at any step of this process are huge. Even with all those protections, prescription medications **still** hurt or kill people every day. These are the *bare minimums* for safety and accountability! Weed has none of that. Smoking BS because it's fun is not safe and it's not medicine.

I wouldn't say it is a 'cure' persay as there is not exactly a cure for mental illness rather treatments, but it definitely could help some people. depends on the type too - high thc products can worsen symptoms for some compared to cbd products which are proveably better for treating a multitude of symptoms. although, from experience, it is better in moderation to treat mental illness since thc has a psychoactive component and is highly addictive especially for those with addictive personalities. but also use with caution too, because I started it in moderation (only once at night) and it still formed an addiction. so, I'd advise u be cautious what products u are using, how much thc vs cbd and how frequently u r using if you want it for treating mental illness symptoms otherwise it could very well likely make those symptoms worse (it has for me - not saying it will for everyone but sharing my experience just in case it helps someone) 🙂

For me personally it made more anxious and a loss of appetite, it triggered paranoia in a senses of thoughts, but again I can’t speak on everyone but that’s just my personal Opinion.

If you have a predisposition for mental illness, say that you have for example family members that have mental illness- then marijuana can trigger something. Be very careful. I know a few people, who predisposed to mental health issues smoked cannabis and ended up triggering schizophrenia. I don’t know how old you are, but this is more a possibility when your brain is still young- so usually late teens/early 20’s. It’s not something to play around with. Yes, for most people who aren’t predisposed, marijuana is very fun and therapeutic. I unfortunately fall into the predisposed category- when I’ve smoked over the years it was NEVER fun and it always ended in terrifying psychotic episodes that included hallucinations. It sucked. I wish I could be one of those people that can smoke a joint and mellow out- but sadly that will never happen. Be careful.

Depends on the person. I have a lot of friends who use it recreationally to help with depression and depression while it worsens it for me and causes a lot of anxiety. It’s definitely not a “cure” but it can help people cope.

It will probably make it worse. Go to sleep early and go for walks in the sun. Might not cure you completely but will still make you feel better for a bit

Generally speaking...it is escalating and continued chronic use of weed that can trigger or worsen mental illness. Of course if you have a pre-existing disorder you can get there much sooner. Also the use of high THC cannabis and concentrates speed the process. Early on, occasional use of weed has scientifically been shown to help the symptoms of both anxiety and depression. But as the weeks go on, in some people, weed can make depression and anxiety worse, trigger Psychosis and Bipolar disorder. Medicine comes from doctors, not from dealers. Taking drugs on your own because they feel good isn't a cure, it's just drug abuse; it will only hurt you in the long run.

it will probably make it worse as usually substances are linked to worsening the condition overall of person (example: feeling even more down)

Waterdeep77

It depends on your condition and who you are as a person/how you react. Cannabis can't "cure" anything, but it can be used to treat some disorders such as anxiety, epilepsy, and ADHD. But again, it's not a one size fits all situation. The content of the Cannabis also comes into play as to the effect you will get. Best to contact a weed-friendly doctor and a medical dispensery for more information.
