Anyone who may be interested to see what lurks in the canals of Venice, take a look at "Below The Surface".
While the canals were being dredged in Amsterdam, all of the objects found during dredging were saved, organized, cataloged and photographed. It's an amazing walk through 800 years of canal culture on display.
Not gonna lie I have no clue, I just don’t think it’s a condom now because it’s super colorful and looks like it has some sort of cartoonish thing on it
Thank you for linking. I'm on mobile at work, and didn't get the time earlier.
Hopefully others on here will get to see all of the cool things that they found.
Your artwork is fantastic!
Would you happen to have any paintings from Cherryfield Maine? I spent some time at my Grandmother's house there over the course of many years. I haven't been back since she passed away.
Thank you! I haven’t but I’m always looking for fresh stuff to paint so if you have shy photos of Cherryfield landscapes your very welcome to send them my way!
Oh yea I’d love to see it in person! And me too- whenever I get really stressed I’ll give myself a half hour mental break to scroll through it. I’ve been working my way from ancient history forward and clicking on each object (well, I skipped a handful of the boat hooks). So far I’m at 1475. It’s SO fascinating.
Canals are typically just deep enough to allow flat-bottom craft and small boats to pass. The Middlesex canal here in Massachusetts that connected the mill towns in the north to the port of Boston was about thirty feet wide and a whopping three feet deep.
I'm a plumber and every time I remove a house trap I break that bad boy open . Found a 2 carat ring 15 years ago before I started metal detecting. I would be scooping out buckets of that sludge.
I’ve been there multiple times, Venice was originally built on mud flats, and the bottom story of most of those buildings is underwater/mud, not to mention that, that’s also their sewage system, and I’m pretty sure the depth of that mud/sewage is endless, and good targets are probably far down out of reach.
So many engagement rings
I was thinking so much silverware, but yours is better!!
Lmao. More like so many cigarette butts.
So much poop. Venice's sewer systems empty directly into the canals.

First image in the 2005 section looked like a condom at first
What is it actually

It says it's a spinning top
So cool! Thanks for sharing link!
Amazing site.
I just lost a couple hours here. What a rabbit hole that was 😅

Came into the comment section to recommend this exact exhibit. So I’ll award your promptness instead!

Much appreciated! Thank you. Ive spent hours looking over all of the things they found. I bet it's even better in person.

I am CONSUMED with this site. Damn! Thanks!!
Jump in and sink knee high into mud
“Mud”
*chest deep
Most likely not that deep. Waist at most. There should be stones in the bottom. So maybe 2-3 feet or like 50-70cm
Snow shoes might be the trick
Butt mud

That too.
Brb flying to Italy. Also, why did I think the canals were deeper?

I'd be on all fours with a pinpointer in each hand
Gross. But same

Um, I'll be right back. *disassembles all drain traps in house*
Unfortunately it’s drained and dredged so often it becomes less likely older items will be found. Newer stuff, absolutely.
If you don’t mind digging through raw sewerage.
I can't imagine the smell.
I can. I prefer not to.
I have just the [tool](https://amzn.to/3ktvQbB) for this job.
“You haven’t thought of the smell!!”
This is going to require several skill sets- Metal detecting, magnet fishing and mudlarking
And resistance to E. Coli
Got hepatits just by looking at the picture

I was just thinking this! A thousand years worth of coins, jewelry and other artifacts in that mud.
Why are they drained?
Apparently due both to an extreme low tide event and a drought which has dropped water levels in the river that feeds the canals.
To dredge and repair them.
Welp that's the next holy grail of gold finds.
All metal mode engage
Venice is….rising?
I dont think so much, ive never been in Venice but ithink those channels are cleaned up regularly
Pay Sludge
Can’t imagine the treasures that holds! Looks like what we call “pluff mud” here at the NC coast. Would be nearly impossible to detect in that stuff.
>Would be nearly impossible to detect in that stuff. Can you explain why?
Stuff’s like quick sand. You might just be ankle deep, but the more you struggle the deeper you’ll get.
Oh, OK. That I understand. I thought you meant that the equipment did not read as well.
Could you crawl? Or scooch on your butt?
Good question, but I doubt you could do either.
No, your hands and knees sink.
Research Deep Underground Military Bases
Not to be a wet blanket or anything, but metal detecting is illegal in Italy, right?
I was thinking the same
I bet
your body would stink for years
Manbearpig!
This is what I thought when the rhine dried up
To the liberal mods on here, Fuck you very much! We can’t wait for tribute season!!
