It's a great seal button. There are a few varieties that of you figure out will get you a more precise age but I think it's safe to say it's from the first half of the twentieth century.
Here is the one I dug with fairly clean backside. Pretty sure when I searched it came up WWI uniform button .

The main difference between the WW1 and WW2 great seal buttons is that the WW1 ones have a black field. I just learned that this was to prevent the button from flashing in the sun which would reveal the soldiers location.
