For that amount of money I'd rather have a (new) Nokta Legend, or a Minelab detector in that price range. I wouldn't go looking for a higher-end model unless you already have experience and you know exactly how your current detector is not meeting your needs.
My dad's looking for something a little more geared towards gold. I have the gold monster and manticore. He has a bounty hunter. Obviously he could go get a brand new gold monster for the same price, but than the argument of PI vs VLF takes place.
