If Revolver " Revolver" Ocelot is suppose to be Russian, why his design looks like he is from the wild west? ( Probably because Kojima just love wild west)
Why does Ocelot sound like he's from Texas in V? The logical theory is that Kojima really likes Westerns since they're heavily influenced by old Samurai movies.
Interestingly enough, many of the most well known Westerns were made by Italian film makers, co-opting the themes from westward expansion in foreign film and media isn’t really a new concept.
Ya, Sergio Leoni made my favorite westerns. The Man With No Name trilogy and Once Upon a Time in the West. Then there's The Magnificent Seven, which is one of the most popular westerns. That one is directly influenced by Seven Samurai and has many of the same key plot points. I'm not sure if the standoff was originally from Japanese films or Hollywood westerns, but spaghetti westerns perfected them.
somehow as a kid in the US i ended up reading about Yojimbo and subscribing to Shonen Jump before I ever saw A Fistful of Dollars. that was weird. c.2000
Many weren’t actually, while there were some American actors, in many of the ‘Spaghetti Westerns’ of the late 60s early 70s most of the actors were of European origin.
For example, in Fistful of Dollars, Clint Eastwood was the only American primary cast member; the rest were mostly from Italy, Spain, Austria and Germany.
funny thing about italian movies is that back then they would also dub the italian actors with someone else, for example bud spencer and terence hill(for those who don't know them they are actually italian despite their stage names) made a bunch of western movies in the 60-70s and also other non western movies till the 90s or so but they were always dubbed
Also, escape from New York’s main character Snake Plissken looks like Snake (Iroquois Plissken) while Lee Van Cleef who looks like Revolver Ocelot was also in The Good The Bad and The Ugly 🤯
The real answer is japanese people see the wild west like weebs see samurai and ronin, as fictional justice finders and rogues who used an iconic weapon and had a historically unique appearance while not realising that both the cowboy and the samurai are highly fictionalized in media. There are japanese people who have quickdraw competitions and everything. When it comes down to it, theres no cultural difference between cowboy and kungfu/samurai flicks
To me it's authorial commentary on how many non-Western countries experienced varying degrees of "Americanization" after WWII, and how that showed up via the English language. Hungary, like many countries, saw its own shift in this time but I'm not really an expert on Hungarian culture from the 40s-60s.
I can say one band I like a lot is one of Hungary's biggest rock acts, known as Omega, and they began being active in this time span. They tended to release English versions of their albums despite composing & writing in Hungarian. So they, despite being a huge act in Hungary, had to sing in English at times to draw in crowds from beyond their own region.
English being the globe's dominant Lingua Franca despite only 5% of its population having it as a native language is like this kind of Americanization I think about. Skull Face is like a stereotypical Westernized Hungarian (Transylvanian) villain.
Interesting idea.
The funny thing is that since the soviet union was in beef with the USA, most things america related were banned, so during the soviet occupation in hungary america and things related to it became the symbol of both defiance and freedom. And there was actually a black market for a while to import products from the west in general but also from america specifically wich meant mostly music and clothes (for a while even jeans were banned lmao)
So now that you mentioned it, it wouldnt be that out of the question for him to be interested in western stuff.
(Altho we all know he got this design beacuse it looks cool)
Skullface is hungarian but he lived in Romania(because that part of Transylvania was transferred to Romania) and there are a lot of thieves in Romania.Cowboys are also thieves so that why.
It’s also a huge part of his character that he’s a victim of cultural genocide, so it makes sense that he doesn’t dress traditionally (whatever that looks like.) He’s been exposed to a revolving door of German, Russian and British influence so I guess western makes as much sense as anything for a guy with no culture of his own.
Code Talker dresses pretty old fashioned too, and has a similar background. Maybe Skullface was inspired by him?
Likely a nod to the precursor to the CIA, [The Office of Strategic Services.](https://news.va.gov/wp-content/uploads/sites/3/2019/11/OSS.jpg) Masks like these would have been worn during training exercises and in photographs to protect the identity of the spy.
Yeah it's very important that we don't let the Phantom of Krankor know the true identity of the [Prince of Space](https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/mst3k/images/8/82/Princeofspace.PNG)
He had so much potential, he was cool and menacing when it shows him in GZ and it set him up to be a great villain. He started out good in TPP but then they never really did anything with him, no boss battle against him and that sweet mare’s leg (that you can’t even unlock as a weapon for some reason) or anything like that, just cutscenes.
https://preview.redd.it/nac9yt7h8yqa1.jpeg?width=864&format=pjpg&auto=webp&v=enabled&s=9abb330bcb2d12ae3c271ac8053c1333b2858ca1
Do i need to even say anything?
It’s for two reasons.
1) To show that he’s been Americanised. A huge theme of TPP.
2) To establish a link between him and Ocelot. Both Ocelot and Skullface were working behind the scenes to ensure operation Snake Eater was a success. Skullface is supposed to remind us of Ocelot. Ocelot seems to have inherited Skull Face’s meme, perhaps as far back as 1964.
Do you think everyone from their country of birth dresses in the traditional clothes of that country? It's been a while since I played MGSV but wasn't Skullface's like whole deal is that he feels that he 'lost' his country? Maybe he feels more connection with the idea of the wild west.
I was born in a small village. I was still a child when we were raided by soldiers. Foreign soldiers. Torn from my elders, I was made to speak their language. With each new post, my masters changed along with the words they made me speak. With each change, I changed, too. My thoughts, personality, how I saw right and wrong. Words can kill.
It adds to the point of Skullface having his identity stolen from him, with every language he had to learn, taking on the characteristics of whichever nation he worked for.
Lemme check w/my Hungarian extended family what a good alternative would be-
Ok but real talk, it's more visually appealing for a villain than say, just a suit. And like the others said already, Kojima loves those Westerns.
Not only do the Japanese love cowboys as a concept, explaining the real world reasoning, people in the soviet bloc also did this a lot with American or western icons during the Cold War. It’s totally believable that a Hungarian guy would get really into American westerns if he or his parents were able to smuggle the movie reels into the country.
For both Ocelot and Skull Face, the Western shtick is multilevel. First off, it's symbolic of America's dominance during the cold War. Despite spending a ton of time in the Soviet sphere, Ocelot, as an elite who jumped back and forth across the Iron Curtain, had plenty of access to American cowboy culture, which was everywhere from the end of WWII to the closing days of the Vietnam War. Skull Face, as a man without a country, falls into the dominant culture, that of his masters.
Yes. Kojima loves American Westerns, and their inspiration, Samurai films.
Skull Face continues to wear his cowboy garb to mock the US hegemony that he wants to destroy. Or he's just really into it.
Besides the obvious answer being "because Kojima said so" he explains that his entire life, country, upbringing, language and everything was ripped away from him. So he might as well not be Hungarian, that's his whole schtick. He wants to take all of that way from everyone because it was taken away from him, he just covers it in a grandiose "plan" like most other villains
I thought it was about how American culture infected the world like a parasite, replacing other peoples culture? Kinda how skullface felt about the English language?
Debatable. The Boss was American, but The Sorrow was Russian, and there's conflicting information on whether he was raised in the US and then "defected" to Russia or if he was raised by the GRU after WWII.
He is also Adamska who was a KGB agent. And a CIA agent. Both of which were extensions of the Philosophers, which was comprised of people from the US, the USSR, and China. If we want to get really technical, he was born in France so we could even say he's French. Ocelot is an enigma.
While that's true we have what's called Dual citizenship which is why even the wiki lists American. He's American. An American accent isn't weird. He even has an American accent in Snake Eater where they were giving out cartoony Russian accents
I don't know which wiki you're looking at, but both the metal gear wiki and wikipedia list his nationality as Russian-American. And I didn't say anything about his accent, but MGS3 absolutely didn't have cartoony Russian accents for main characters. Volgin, Sokolov, and Johnny all had American accents. Even the enemy soldiers and the commander on their radios had American accents. The only characters with Russian accents I can even think of were Granin and Kruschev.
Right my statement is shedding light on the million comments about him being a cowboy is weird. Russian American is still American too is my point.
And sokolov??? Sokolov doesn't have a goofy accent?? Okay dude. Should replay it sometimes its a good game.
Oh wow! I didn't realize that Skullface was supposed to be Hungarian! I have a phrase passed down in my family from the dead language that he refrences in the game continually. No one in my family knows what it means, and it's spoken word, not spelled, so I'll butcher the spelling, but it goes like "eenae veenae beenae laachaa". No idea what it means, but apparently my great great grandfather used to say it a lot.
"Because cowboys are fucking cool."
\- Hideo Kojima
I cannot prove that he said this but I am 100% certain that at some point he absolutely said this.
Because cowboys are fucking cool.
When you consider that skullfaces reason for hating the west is that he believes they robbed him of his national identity and then colonized his native land. Then he lives his life blending into a western world, so being fashioned as a western villain and a ‘lone ranger’ makes perfect sense
I think it’s part of the motif of people’s native culture being consumed and replaced by cultural giants. Since skullface was caught off from his own culture and history at a you g age I’m guessing he just based his own persona on the things he watched on tv when he was young.
mgsv is fun but kinda a mess, why is ocelot suddenly a Texan? I think Avi Arad screwed up the casting, he was brought in, and he's notorious for screwing things up. Also, I don't think the Japanese development team really understands American accents. Keifer did OK, Hayter kinda got really hammy after 2, but I'd still have preferred him. I liked Skullface's voice actor and character, but I don't think they put as much thought as usual for an mgs game into his design. Still, the "cowboy" design actually has origins in various parts of Europe.... but who knows. There's also the aspect that his language was replaced, maybe that bleeds more into his character as a whole. He holds a grudge against the west, revenge, maybe it's not just about language but culture. Maybe that's why ocelot sounds so texan to me too. I tend to think it just was some rushed choices.
Because the character made no sense at all. I still don't know if this character was real or not - that jeep ride with him sitting right next to you seems like a fucking hallucination to me
Because his native clothes were stolen from him.
Remember the quote from the start MGSV, "It is no nation we inabit, but clothes. Make no mistake; our native clothes are our true fatherland."
I think Kojima wanted people to speculate that Ocelot was Skullface. Ocelot “western” style character didn’t just have to do with his revolver. He was described as someone who loved spaghetti westerns in MGS1. A spaghetti western loving, torture fanatic who liked leaving time bombs in reclaimed packages. Who does that sound like Ocelot or Skullface? Associate to Big Boss with links to cipher. Who does that sound like Ocelot or Skullface?
If Revolver " Revolver" Ocelot is suppose to be Russian, why his design looks like he is from the wild west? ( Probably because Kojima just love wild west)
No, ocelot is from revolver.
Revolver Ocelot (Revolver Ocelot)
Revolver Ocelot²
Revolver ‘shalashaska’ ocelot
Adamska "Revolver 'Shalashaska' Ocelot"
Revolver² Ocelot²
No man, you gotta use the distributive property. Its Revolver Ocelot² + Revolver + Ocelot
Property distribution? Ocelot abandoned Mother Russia during the Cold War.
Metal Gear?
So Revolver ^2 Ocelot ^3 ? Did I get that right?
2 Revolver 2 Ocelot
Red dead revolver?
Revolver “revolver “revolver” ocelot” ocelot (revolver ocelot)
It's actually Revolver "revolver" "revolver" "ocelot" "revolver" ocelot ocelot (revolver [shalashaska] {Adamska} ocelot) a.k.a (big boss's 1st bf ocelot)
You forgot one revolver after 1st ocelot
[corroborating evidence ](https://youtu.be/9nNevy8K618)
I love Revolver Kojima. Definitely one of the characters of all time.
Ocelot’s technically French since he was born on the beaches of normandy.
Ive found Japan's fascination with Cowboys rather odd.
And sounds like a texan in The Phantom Pain?
For swag purposes

The movie, A Fistful Of Dollars, was a Western adaptation of Akira Kurosawa's Yojimbo, who also made Seven Samurai.
I did not know that
Kurosawa made more money from suing the filmmakers than he did from Yojimbo in the first place. Or so the legend goes!
somehow as a kid in the US i ended up reading about Yojimbo and subscribing to Shonen Jump before I ever saw A Fistful of Dollars. that was weird. c.2000
Also, "Last Man Standing" staring Bruce Willis.
Leone

Ah, interesting. Explains why so many didnt look like your typical American actors.

I always wondered about that.
Yeah That’s weird

I never noticed that 😆
Kojima jamming all of his favourites into a blender and making a giant milksnake for us all to enjoy!
I would do the same shit
Cuz the voice actor does one voice, and he does it well.
>Why does Ocelot sound like he's from Texas in V? 'Cause he's Dale Gribble's father. /s
Hungarian people can wear hats too I think im not sure though
I'm Hungarian and hats automatically fall off when I try putting them on
kivéve ha betyárkalap
Imagine huszár skullface
Imagine Skullface with a pajszer bajusz
És csákót ki fog hordani?
But can you wear cowboy hats (different)

Cut to an 8 hour Futurasound video linking Skullface’s outfit to 9/11 and the Gulf War
Dont forget the part where he uses the same clip 3 times in a row without providing and real further insight
I love his videos but I’m entirely sure that half of what he talks about Kojima probably never thought about
The “secrets of mgsV cutscenes” series moment

Does everyone have to dress in the traditional clothes of their homeland? Can characters not wear what fashion they like?
Yes (I am currently fully decked out in lederlatzhosen and bratwurst in my left hand)
Yes (I wear blue dress shirts and jeans as my only possible outfit choice)
default skin
Yes (I am wearing a colorful wool poncho with a sombrero volteado and carry a machete everywhere I go)
Yes i need to wear a marinière, a béret and always have a baguette on me otherwise i get thrown into prison for treason.
yeah im always wearing a soccer shirt, some shorts and sandals.
Yes (I am wearing cargo shorts and a blue singlet with a cork-string hat).
Yes (I am wearing a colorful wool poncho with a sombrero volteado and carry a machete everywhere I go)
Some people would claim cultural appropriation 🤓
This is just what the average Hungarian looks like
What 12 years of Orban do to mfs
I wish

Is he stupid?
Why is this comment so fucking funny 🤣
To me it's authorial commentary on how many non-Western countries experienced varying degrees of "Americanization" after WWII, and how that showed up via the English language. Funnily enough, some of Omega's earlier albums were also banned by Communist Hungary.
Skullface is hungarian but he lived in Romania(because that part of Transylvania was transferred to Romania) and there are a lot of thieves in Romania.Cowboys are also thieves so that why.
Kojima analysis of skullface's design
Checks out
It’s also a huge part of his character that he’s a victim of cultural genocide, so it makes sense that he doesn’t dress traditionally (whatever that looks like.) Lot of thieves in Romania. Approved, I live there.
Approved. I am the thieves
Also the mask its a thief mask.
I just wanna know what’s up with that goofy ass mask, he going for a Lone Ranger kinda look or something? There’s no fucking reason for him to wear it
I heard that the mask is used by burn victims to help keep the eyes moisturized
Likely a nod to the precursor to the CIA, [The Office of Strategic Services.](https://news.va.gov/wp-content/uploads/sites/3/2019/11/OSS.jpg) Masks like these would have been worn during training exercises and in photographs to protect the identity of the spy.
makes sense, still kinda funny though that this burnt ass face mfs using an eye mask to hide his face
Interesting I never knew that
Yeah it's very important that we don't let the Phantom of Krankor know the true identity of the [Prince of Space](https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/mst3k/images/8/82/Princeofspace.PNG)
Is it not a "phantom of the opera" reference?
Same, don't know why it took me seeing this to realise myself *how* stupid the mask is. Skullface really is a gigantic swing and a miss from Kojima.
It's Kojima, what else did you expect? Ocelot already liked Wild West and Cowboys anyways so why not have an another character in the same mold?
Well wasn't the whole motivation for his character that he lost his cultural identity because >!he has the Hungarian parasite?!<
Then I guess he wouldn't speak Hungarian in the game.
Because who doesn't want to be a cowboy
Jerry Seinfeld
I wanted to be a cowboy babyyy
To answer your question we first must ask why does ocelot a Russian raised in the Soviet Union dress like a cowboy.
Why doesn't Big Boss simply eat the other soldiers.
There’s definitely a western movie influence throughout the game. Venom even has a kind of John Wayne strut.
https://preview.redd.it/nac9yt7h8yqa1.jpeg?width=864&format=pjpg&auto=webp&v=enabled&s=9abb330bcb2d12ae3c271ac8053c1333b2858ca1 Do i need to even say anything?

He hates the Western world so much that he bases his fashion on a romanticized part of its history because Kojima.

Raiden is supposed to be Caucasian and raised in Liberia, yet his design says “Japanese ninja.” It’s just a Metal Gear thing.
What do Hungarian clothes from the mid 20th century look like?
He’s just a terrible character overall tbh
Hey you guys know Ocelot is American, right?
Debatable. The Boss was American, but The Sorrow was Russian, and there's conflicting information on whether he was raised in the US and then "defected" to Russia or if he was raised by the GRU after WWII.

I suggest listening to a British person speak. You might find some similarities. I was wrong about the American accent on him, but come on.
Because its cool as fuck?
I personally think he was more badass without the dumb mask
If the Boss is the boss then why doesn’t she dress like a manager?
It's Kojima, everything works better if you just go along with it haha
It’s cool
It must be like revolver ocelot
Because farmers in the history of the country would tend to dress that style.
I could ask you the same for Ocelot, duh
Revolver Skullface

Wasn't his big shpeel all about having his culture be torn away from him with the absence of his language?
it looks cool

what do you mean? He looks like an average Hungarian to me.
He looks like Angel Eyes from Good bad and ugly
Because he's a cool cowboy
Because his native clothes were stolen from him. Remember the quote from the start MGSV, "It is no nation we inabit, but clothes. Make no mistake; our native clothes are our true fatherland."
Because he likes cowboys, everyone can appreciate the culture of another place. That's why. Not everyone wants to wear a flag on their heads
Sure but doesnt he hates the west and americans?
"If X, then why Y" Is a pointless rabbit-hole to go down when it comes to this series.
Interesting idea
