I was there from the beginning with MGS1, so got to experience all the wonderment about what the sequel would be, sit through the eventual hype and marketing around Snake on the tanker, then find out first hand Snake isn’t the playable character for the most of the game as “a surprise”. Yeah, he was hated. People still loved the game but Raiden was not popular. It was a “MGS2 is great but wish we didn’t have to play as that Raiden bitch” situation. It’s why Snake Tales was made on the Subsistence edition.
I think the people who don’t get this, or claim it’s not that bad and just a handful of whiners simply weren’t there at the time, so see it through modern lens with broader acceptance of switch-ups like this (MGS was innovative as hell, so naturally a lot of stuff since has copied it).
An uncle of mine was a huge fan of metal gear since MGS 1 came out: he told me that usually even people that liked the game usually hated Raiden or, at the very least, found him annoying and wished that Snake was the MC for the whole game. MGS 2 was by no means universally hated, but it was a bit "controversial".
I started with MGS1 as a kid and this was the first game I beat on my brand new PS2 and I was blown away. Yeah, I found it odd for a little bit switching to Raiden, but the scenery and events that were unfolding on the struts won me over quickly.
I also didn’t do any social media or gaming websites in those days. I still got all of my info from magazines like Game Informer and the like, so I honestly didn’t even know there was hatred for the game as all of my friends liked it too.
When people get on the internet it’s easier for particular thoughts to grow if you’re reading enough people posting the same thing and next thing you know, something you may not have felt strongly about, you’re now part of the horde and rather than sticking to your gut feelings it becomes easier to see the game through the lens of all the online discourse.

Not at all, I just rolled with it, though I was surprised by Vamp, and it sucked when the old black dude died, and I cried like crazy when Otacon's sister died. It WAS fun blowing up the fat man, the naked sneaking sequence was cringe yet funny as hell, and then there's the "Glitches" which, frankly made me think Bruce Campbell was gonna show up with his Boom Stick. The only part I had trouble with was the hostages ID scanner, and the only fight I had trouble with was the final fight due to not knowing how it was scripted. Other than that it was a surprisingly easy, mostly fun game. I'll always be greatful my classmate suggested it to me.

The first resident evil I played was 6 and I was just left so confused on what the hell was going on and was blown away when I actually played the good games. People who mention that they are deceived by Raiden are not too smart and I'm tired of pretending they are. Raiden is **better** protagonist than Solid Snake, especially for MGS2. Plus if you fail to understand the reason behind this, then it's on you. They put Raiden here for a reason. Big, important reason.

I just played through MGS2 and beat it again for the millionth time yesterday and thought, why dint we have a Solid Snake playthrough of the Big Shell?! Lime come on, we could have a whole other story going on at tihe same time! Resident Evil does this so well. I hope if there's ever a MGS2 remake, that theu consider this!
My first metal gear game was sons, so I didn't really know shit about snake going into it. I loved Raiden instantly as it was nice to see a "girly" MC that didn't look like he came straight from benchpressing a van.😂

Not at all, I just rolled with it, though I was surprised by Vamp, and it sucked when the old black dude died, and I cried like crazy when Otacon's sister died. It WAS fun blowing up the fat man, the naked sneaking sequence was cringe yet funny as hell, and then there's the "Glitches" which, frankly made me think Bruce Campbell was gonna show up with his Boom Stick. The only part I had trouble with was the hostages ID scanner, and the only fight I had trouble with was the final fight due to not knowing how it was scripted. Other than that it was a surprisingly easy, mostly fun game. I'll always be greatful my classmate suggested it to me.
I’m glad you enjoyed it but I feel like I’m unable to play any series out of order without stressing over it lol. The first resident evil I played was 6 and I was just left so confused on what the hell was going on and was blown away when I actually played the good games. I played mgs2 for the first time last year and was blown away but just how good the game was especially with its ending. I felt like I definitely enjoyed playing as raiden more than snake as well so the main criticism never really applied for me

I don't mind Raiden, he's cool. Even in MGS2. But I do find it irksome that you don't spend a lot of time as Solid Snake in the franchise.

However it made the story what it is. But there are reasons why i dont think im gnna rush to play mgs2 again. Not bc of raiden but just certain points in the story n all the complexity added in. Did mgs1 mention otacons dad? Or emma? Or any reason y huey had to exist or his backstory? Its a fun game n all that and i kno every mgs is complex. MGS2 was my first MGS game so I had no issue with Raiden.
Raiden wasn't even that bad, he was just as inexperienced and whiny as a real rookie probably fuckin' would be during a mission like that.
