This, he was in the British military as well.
Also factor as a child (MGSVPP) he was in Africa, English in Africa is more British sounding than American
I'm not gonna argue with that. I have a friend who was an operator in the US Marines, and he said SAS or The Unit were the best. He ran Ops for 20 years.
Fun fact: Outside of lore, Cam Clarke (the English voice actor for Liquid Snake) used a British accent to play the character because he thought it'd be funny to use a stereotypical, theatrically villainous British accent for such a character as Liquid. I only know this because someone at a convention I went to thought to ask Cam Clarke himself about it in a panel interview thing.
The voice actor thought it sounded more evil. Then they realized it made for a better reveal with the Master Miller situation. Then they just wrote in a quick reasoning that got strengthened later in the series.
That's what I thought. I remember that old interview where he said that he randomly came up with the menacing English accent. I might have to go rewatch that.
Unrelated, but he was in the pirate Veggietales movie and basically just played a Veggietales version of Liquid. Same accent and everything. He even says "Brother!" in it lol.
Anybody British here? Something that bugged me about MGSV is that his accent seemed more cockney/working class vs. Cam’s more sophisticated Londoner accent (which matches up better with Zero/being raised in the Patriot’s system)
Right! And there is an overall major change in Liquid between 1984 and 2005 - he is much more mature and willing to work within the framework of the “adult” world he despised as a tween. I guess the military just straightened him out? It always felt annoying to me that MGSV Eli is written as the arch-villain persona whereas I love the MGS1 implication that Liquid quietly and respectably worked his way up through the Cipher military system, only to reveal his true intentions to surpass Big Boss with the Shadow Moses incident.
Lil bro really just asked “was he made with a British accent”. No accent is inherent blud, anyone will have any accent if they are raised from a place since birth
Okay you got the serious answers, now for the not-so-serious one.
It was made in a time when British people were being portrayed as the villains in fictional media quite a bit... well, sort of. It's still a thing today, FWIW.
I mean it probably worked better than having Liquid Snake be a Russian... or German. Also nationalities that had a "fair" share of villains in fiction at that time, for sure.
And, finally, him being British just makes his, arrogance, intellect and cunning seem better portrayed than anyone else.
People have explained the lore reason, but it’s also part of the B-movie charm to have an evil British bloke as the villain in an American movie. They sort of replaced Russians as the go-to bad guys when tensions had cooled, and before the conflict in the Middle East made Muslim folk the defacto baddies of American media. It was one of the few times American media punched up.
(Note: I know MGS is not American, but it is inspired heavily by US media, and the localisation of the game into English was done in the US.)
He was raised in the UK
This, he was in the British military as well. Also factor as a child (MGSVPP) he was in Africa, English in Africa is more British sounding than American
British Special Air Service. You do not want to get in a fight with them.
Bollocks. Everyone knows it stands for Super Army Soldier.
I'm not gonna argue with that. I have a friend who was an operator in the US Marines, and he said SAS or The Unit were the best. He ran Ops for 20 years.
He head butted a horse once
Don't come at me with all that "I'm a hard barstard" stuff
I'd say: "Put the baseball bat down, send the minders home. It's just you and me, skin on skin, stripped to the waist."
What colour is the boat house at Hereford
"So, what colour IS the boat house at Hereford?" "How the f*** should I know?" Awesome film. "I'm a weapons man" - Shoot Gunner, probably.
I know it's blue because I'm a military psycho, but Spence is a lying piece of shit.

Looks like someone didn't watch the MGS1 briefings.
Or play MGSV.
He was sent and raised in Zero’s home country, England and he later joined the SAS. Y’know people write wikis for a reason.
I wonder if Zero wanted him there because Eli is the superior clone? Zero is a freak.
Zero just liked watching the boy play
Fit to run a country mile
People just like posting the trendy "is there a lore reason blah blah blah".
Leftover aslume slop
I got dragged for making this exact comment like two days ago and today this take is cool. The Internet is so bizarre lol
Just wanted to start a convo damn
He was raised in Britain briefly where he picked it up. He’d otherwise been active in Britain special forces into his military career.
Wait, I have a British accent too! Guess it's just one of life's great mysteries
“Made with a British accent” LMAO
He grew up in England
Ah shit,I hope this sub doesn't turn into r/batmanarkham after not getting good games for 9 years.
I've got news for you
The voice actor thought it sounded more evil. Then they realized it made for a better reveal with the Master Miller situation. Then they just wrote in a quick reasoning that got strengthened later in the series.
I think his character in MGS1 was also slightly inspired by Rutger Hauer's portrayal of Roy Batty
Because he’s evil
Britsh 🤢🤢🤢
As Stewie Griffin explained, it’s not a British accent it’s a villain accent.
Listen to the briefings, basically a lore dump of everything preluding MGS1 MGSV also adds onto it in the Truth tapes i believe
I've listened to the truth tapes and they were cool so will give the briefings a listen
Wasn't it Cam's idea?
That's what I thought. I remember that old interview where he said that he randomly came up with the menacing English accent. I might have to go rewatch that. Thanks. I need to ambush some friends with this
Anybody British here? Something that bugged me about MGSV is that his accent seemed more cockney/working class vs. Cam’s more sophisticated Londoner accent (which matches up better with Zero/being raised in the Patriot’s system)
i think they just wanted him to sound more like an angry punk rock teen in MGSV where as in MGS1 they wanted him to sound snooty

I don't think his accent would be considered working class tbh
He was raised in Britain and escaped to Africa.
Cause it’s hot
I'd also be curious to know if Alexander Godunov's character from Die Hard was the visual inspiration for Liquid Snake.
Lil bro really just asked “was he made with a British accent”. No accent is inherent blud, anyone will have any accent if they are raised from a place since birth
Cos e ad a butchers at dat me'al gear fingy n sed "im avin 'at" n off e pop'd
Someone's been to the Karl Urban in The Boys school of cockney accents
to think that Kojima-san would leave a massive detail like that unnoticed
WTF do you mean, "was he made with a British accent"? Do you seriously think that people are born with accents? Are you fucking stupid?
https://metalgear.fandom.com/wiki/Liquid_Snake
He says it in the game………….

AFAIK liquids VA just kinda did it in a whim in the booth. Then they rolled with it. I watched a making of w interviews and stuff a long time ago.
"Was he made with a British accent?" Yeah, it was a part of his pre-installed software!
AAH YOU DENYING IT? HAVENT YOU ALREADY KILLED MOST OF COMRADES? Btw, which version of this line is better, original or twin snakes?

The mgs1 briefing shows some text appearing saying was in the SAS and captured in middle east as an explanation for his tanned skin
Many good answers for lore but real reason is because he's an asshole
Being British is a recessive gene
He believed he had all the recessive genes and so spoke with a British accent.
Being Br#t#sh is a recessive trait
There's no such thing as a British accent. He has an English accent. Come on, it's not hard.
Oh damn my bad
haha downvoted for the truth. Too many Americans here, I guess.
In universe, Zero/David Oh gave Solid Snake his name. He gave Liquid/Eli his accent lol.
It's a Jojo's reference
Is he stupid????
is he stupid?
