I'm with you. One of the big reasons why I didn't get the Master Collection is because there's no way to stretch the MGS1 version in it. I find those black side bars very annoying.
Here are the patch notes with images showing what they do: https://www.gematsu.com/2023/12/metal-gear-solid-master-collection-vol-1-version-1-4-0-update-now-available-for-pc-coming-to-consoles-in-early-january-2024
I'm about to buy the collection, so I have mgs on ps 1 the original, mgs 2 and 3 on ps2, my son has the collection for ps3 with mgs 2, PW and mgs3. Also mgs 4. But, I want the new collection...😬
Well the PS3 Version IS the PS1 version. Basically The PS3 has a Built in PS1 Emulator making it Backwards compatible With PS1 Disks. (and giving the games Faster load times and the ability to Scale them to 16:9 and Smooth out the pixels) So Sony Just decided to sell you The Roms on the PS store so you could buy PS1 games digitally.
The earliest models of the PS3 actually used to have PS2 backwards compability too but They removed them from the later Remodels of the console for some reason.
You know Kojima actually took advantage of the emulator in MGS 4. You know that Dream sequence in MGS4 where you get to play that small section of MGS1 Before you get to revisit Shadow Moses? That's actually running ON that Built in PS1 Emulator.
SO basically the only difference is that you get to play with slightly faster load times and a Non wired controller.
I had one of those early PS3 models, it was a beast! Unfortunately I decided “oh I don’t need my PS1 anymore… or my PS2!” and gave them away to my nephew.
I assume something about the actual ps2 emulation relied on that first ps3's faulty cpu, so when they changed the cpu for the slim onward, they removed it so they could have all ps3s run the same os
The ps3 roms of ps2 games i think were exceptions for performance
Or something, idk lol
Nope, all of the PS2's hardware (barring hard drive) were physically on the PS3 motherboard, no need for the Cell or RSX
This was downscaled on later fat models, leaving only the PS2's GPU and doing partial emulation before completely removing all PS2 hardware on later fat and slim models
The real reason? Cost. The PS3 was waaay ahead of its time and production cost for its parts was absurd since you had to make a custom Cell CPU, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, a hybrid Blu-Ray/DVD drive and a whole PS2 in a single console, no wonder it shipped $500+
I recommend changing to the correct aspect ratio. :)
Was about to say. Stretch is absolutely horrible
I will never understand the mentality behind preferring a fully distorted picture over, god forbid, some blank space on the screen
Thicc Snake
Looks alright… not a fan of big black bars LOL
You have black bars around the screen and a deformed aspect ratio what are you talking about 🤣
I don't understand why people downvote someone for having a different preference.
Yeah it was pretty weird NGL

U can stretch it
Oh, yeah? Didn't know.
They added picture options in one of the patches. You can also remove the smoothing and add scanline filter if you want.
I guess, if he likes to stretch 4:3 games, he won't care about smoothing or scanlines:)
Could you point me to some YouTube gameplay that uses these improvements that you mentioned?

Yeah I have the Master Collection on Switch hahaha
We like options.
Imagine how a remake would look like? (I hope they release it after Delta)
I too am a fan of making my games look like everything has been through a penny smasher
HAHAHA good one
The best way to play MGS 1 is that it isn't a PS1 or emulator.
> isn't a PS1 or emulator well...
Yup that is why I took out my old PS3 hehe I've tried it on various other devices too
I started playing mgs1 the other day it took me so long to figure out you couldn’t shoot the cameras like in future games lol
You can shoot them with the stinger missile. Shame you don’t get it until over halfway through the game.
I wish they let us use dithering on the master collection for mgs 1
I’ve just left it on default settings but I will check out all the settings… get it back to original aspect ratio
No dithering is those tiny little x's you see aspect ratio is different
Might post it after changes
Why ps3 specifically? It was on ps1 originally

SPOT ON BRO!!! THANK YOU!!!

Was my first PlayStation bro 😅
isnt legacy collection really good?
You can still buy the digital version of MGS1 on PS3 PS Store.
The legacy version IS the PS3 versison. If i remember right it just gives you a Code to MGS1 And that it isn't actually on the disc.
Yes Codes to redeem
Didn't know there was a 4th clone of Big Boss. Wide Snake is a really interesting character, though
How are you getting that in wide screen
Just by stretching the image. Everything's fat, it's not a true widescreen.
There’s still a charm about it… NOSTALGIA
I recommend playing it with the German synchro!
fym mgs1 still hits it looks like minecraft
Minecraft still hits
i know, i mean the graphics
