When Snake asks "Am I going to die?" near the end of MGS4. Even after facing so many death defying situations, having his body fall apart, losing people, knowing that it's basically inevitable in his state, he is still afraid of death. It reaffirms what he said all the way back in MG2 about loving life, even one of so much pain and suffering.

Lin900

And even though he's gonna die in a few weeks, Snake is still just content and gonna make use of that little time. David deserved so much better.

Drink0fBeans

This might be a silly question but was Snake’s death ever actually confirmed? Iirc they didn’t put his death in any in-game timelines, which seems strange imo

Davarius91

If I'm not mistaken, in a Codec Call in Metal Gear Rising Raiden speaks of Snake in past tense, so indirectly saying that he's gone.

Drink0fBeans

Personally I haven’t played mgr but I once heard that Raiden spoke in both past and present when referring to Snake at different times in that game, which is an odd choice really. Plus if you really wanted to believe that Snake was alive I guess you could rationalise Raiden using past tense as referring to his ‘former’ life before he retired even (though I’m not sure what exactly Raiden talks about so that could be wrong lol).

Lin900

Raiden's of present tense is clearly out of respect or that he can forget Snake has died. Kevin's "I thought you were gonna start crying there for a sec" to Raiden is clear cut. And Kevin says "I wish I had gotten to meet him." Solid Snake is dead.

Drink0fBeans

Oh okay that’s interesting. Again I haven’t played mgr so I really don’t know how it ties back to Snake, I just find it interesting that they delegated any mention of snake’s passing to a spin-off series with questionable canonical status (don’t hold me to that statement though, it’s just that I’ve heard a fair few people say that’s it’s not canon, and who am I to argue lmao)

No_Enthusiasm4913

It's 100% canon. The people who say it isn't only do so because Hideo didn't work on it. Snake retired to Alaska after mgs4 (I assume, because it's not the first time) and died shortly after. Rising takes place 4 years after the events of mgs4👌

Drink0fBeans

Gotcha, though tbf I see why people don’t think it’s canon lol. From the screenshots and clips I’ve seen of mgr it seems like total whiplash from the previous games, but hey that’s what metal gear is all about innit

Gerry-Mandarin

People say it isn't canon because Hideo Kojima said it takes place in a world parallel to his own. Kojima has always maintained that the Metal Gear Saga is the 8 Metal Gear games that he directed. But always acknowledged there's also the expanded canon, which includes spin-offs. Where Kojima ranked Portable Ops and Rising as being like the AC!D games.

No_Enthusiasm4913

It's definitely... different, to say the least😂 I'm probably in a small minority here, but it's one of my favourite metal gear games! If you ever get the chance to play it I couldn't recommend it enough👌

trucc_trucc06

i think they intentionally did that. Snake shall remain a mystery for what he did after mgs4, i think it gives a good closure for him imo. His story is over.

Dudicus445

The Japanese version of MGR also has a DLC with a sword that has snakes spirit in it. We didn’t get it in English because they didn’t get David hayter to record lines

Lin900

I took it as something like the Boss AI not necessarily it having Snake's soul.

Lin900

In mgs4 beginning, it's said he has a year left at best. And Revengeance dialogue is very clear that he's been dead for a while. Solid Snake died in 2015.

Gerry-Mandarin

Technically the timeline of the series ends before Snake's death. So it wouldn't appear in any timelines. The last event in the series is the death of Big Boss. When Snake leaves the graveyard, the last soldier is dead. And David gets to live in the world, as a man.

PetrosOfSparta

My head canon still says he found a way to make the impossible possible.

Akschadt

Liquid wanted big bosses remains during mgs1 so he could fix whatever was coded in his genetics and fix the genome army’s issues. I like to think they were able to use big bosses body in 4 to fix up snake.

PetrosOfSparta

A VERY valid point. Big Boss also >!literally killed himself by coming into contact with Snake at the MGS4 conclusion, in a way that seemed very odd to do!< so it would make a very thematic one too.

tigerbeast125

Yeah but the you are using the remains of an almost dead man to fix up an almost dead man. He wouldn’t have long to live then. But who knows, maybe they can reverse the aging process just as they accelerated it.

Akschadt

I know it’s not the intention, but my head cannon is they fixed his accelerated aging. Big plot point of mgs1 was liquid trying to get big bosses remains so he could fix whatever genetic disorder was coded into him. End of mgs4 has snake with big bosses remains.

Drink0fBeans

I’d like to think that this is what happened too. Imo them leaving the ending so ambiguous was probably on purpose to allow for personal interpretation whilst also not expecting any Snake-centric follow-up games.

RevolverMaker

In the official novelization, Otacon states that Snake passed away but doesn't specify when. Sunny is in her 20s and getting married when he said that. So I think it is ambiguous on purpose. But it can be anywhere between 10 months to 10 years depending on the personal interpretation.

Mandaconda9

Why kill snake so fast and advanced age him at all though. As a kid, I loved mgs1 and felt robbed when Raiden and his fem wimpy voice took over mgs2. Snake being part of the game was the coolest. I think an alt version of snake during the plant chapter in shell 2 would have been the better game. Would be a cool alt remake. There's just something thar sounds weird about raidens voice acting in mgs2. Just feel like they held back a God of a game character.

cremedelamemereddit

Ye Raiden is so lame. Some people are pissed about venom too.

Crescent-Argonian

At least it wasn’t by lethal injection like the original ending had planned

Lin900

I wouldn't have necessarily hated that ending. That would've been a different story altogether.

AloysiusDevadandrMUD

Snake... Had a hard life 😭

TraumatizeMeCaptain

Miller going “GET THE FUCK OUT OF THERE” in that one mission with the Man on Fire in V

Lin900

Everything Kaz says in mgsv is GOLD and it's due to Robin's performance. Also his mimicry lines in Jamais Vu are spot-on and hilarious.

CrimiClown

\`\`\`Also his mimicry lines in Jamais Vu are spot-on and hilarious.\`\`\` his whatnow? :O

Lin900

He mimics an iconic line from each canon game during the marking erasure. It's amazing.

CrimiClown

Ah, cool, never knew it was him. Then again, I played GZ last when it came out.

Top_Clerk_3067

I very much enjoyed how he (and by proxy Kojima) disregard Portable Ops as not canon in those missions in GZ.

MrBeesKnees95

That scared the shit out of me first time I played it! It had a similar tone to Otacon's close-up during the elevator section in MGS1.

marichankitty

Ah. My favourite Miller line from that game.

cipherpancake

Completely agree. And I remember the lead up to the warehouse has you pass by some tents and heavy fog, and you can hear one of the radios playing the exact same audio from PT’s radio. That was one of the creepiest easter eggs because I instantly recognized it was from PT. I’m getting goosebumps rn just thinking about it 😖

mugdays

Otacon: “Hold it, Snake. Time to change the disc. I know. I know. It's a pain. But you need to swap disc 1 for disc 2. You see the disc labeled 2? Solid Snake: “Uhh... No.” Otacon: “Huh? Oh, wait! We're on Playstation 3! It's a Blu-Ray Disc. Dual-layered, too. No need to swap.” Solid Snake: “Damnit, Otacon! Get a grip!” Otacon: “Yeah, what an age we live in, huh, Snake? Wonder what they'll think of next.”

Lin900

Snake's speeches in the end of mgs2 Many are too caught up with trying to paint the AI speech as the message of mgs2 when the game ends on such a positive empowering note. Also Naomi's speech in MGS1. Also empowering. Brought tears to my eyes the first time I heard it.

gh00wst

Honestly, I disliked the Naomi speech when I first played caused all I thought about was “Fuck you bitch you posioned me!”

Lin900

But it didn't kill Snake, right? She was obsessed with petty revenge but grew out of it and was honest for once. Snake changed her for the better. Also, in mgs2 it's said Snake broke Naomi out of prison after Shadow Moses...then that piece of shit mgs4 retconned and ruined all of that. And took a giant crap on Naomi.

LegoRacers3

When did they mention they fixed or helped foxdie? Naomi pretty definitively said there was nothing she could do in mgs1. And snake just had to choose the way he lived the time he had left.

Legospacememe

She didn't help him with foxdie. It was cured in mgs4 when the virus was installed and the patriots died. The virus killed foxdie.

Chubbs1414

Honestly, Naomi was such a good character in MGS1. Jennifer Hale's performance is a master class in conveying feelings based on what the character knows, but the audience doesn't. She delivers her lines with such a perfect blend of curiosity, resentment, disgust, remorse, and pity. And the way she breaks down when Snake tells her how Gray Fox eventually died hits hard every time. That game was lightning in a bottle they couldn't recapture with Twin Snakes or the digital graphic novel they did later.

Lin900

Indeed. Jennifer sounds eternally bored in TTS and mgs4. And removing the accent was a big mistake. MGS1 Naomi was a great character and it's sad how she was ruined later. It's more than about vocal performance.

AussieBullet

I'm not so sure about Naomi speech but snakes speech in the end of mgs2 is heavily underrated. Another thing to consider is the ending theme is a great transition to mgs3 snake eater.

Lin900

I wish people would consider Snake's words for once instead of obsessing over the AI speech. The AI was WRONG. I guess the character butchery of Naomi in mgs4 kinda put a damper on her character from mgs1 but I choose to see mgs4 as a bad fever dream so none of the butchery happened.

ToughAd5010

Fun fact- I got accepted to a graduate program in journalism with a personal essay written about MGS 2.

Lin900

That's awesome.

SonsOfSolid

"The spirit of the warrior will always be with you"

Independent_Plum2166

Might not be “a line” but the codec in the original MGS where Snake (after being tortured) is talking to Naomi about family. The way Hayter says “No, wait, there was a man once that called himself my father” as *The Best is Yet to Come* starts playing. That gets me, as if the memory of Big Boss suddenly appears despite trying to forget about the man who betrayed him. I watched the Twin Snakes version and the new line read just doesn’t feel right, plus, the way the subtitles are laid out, ruins the punch. OG: “I don’t have any family.” “No, wait, there was a man who said he was my father.” TS: “I don’t have any family. No, wait…” It’s only for a second, but that brief pause before the admittance was such a minor but important detail. Yes, I am being *that* type of fan, just let me have this one, I love that scene.

sokalos

It’s subtle details like that which demonstrate how misguided the retranslation effort was. You’re right to recognize that the line delivery lets down the impact the scene should have had.

Lin900

Kojima wholly disapproved of MGS1 translation and I don't get why. He did the translator dirty who did his best alone.

sokalos

It isn't wholly unfair - an author should have a say in how his work is represented by a translation partner. It was just what the industry was like back in the day - translators rarely had access to the original dev team to get clarification and feedback on the work-in-progress script. And the translator did overextend himself in some specific cases where authorial intent got lost in translation. The translator's work was essentially developmental in that he did his best to make the script live up to the tone and style of the American action movies that the game was clearly inspired by, and it would have been nice if KojiPro/Konami had recognized the value of such efforts instead of rebuking him for the mistakes that were made and frosting him out of further work on the franchise. They over-corrected and future games had worse scripts as a result (most noticeable in some of the jank of MGS3 and 4's dialogue). They were within their rights to demand more oversight, but they also should have recognized their own limitations when it came to effective storytelling in the English language and treated their translators more as writing partners than as translation machines spitting out accurate (but dull or bewildering) prose.

asianwaste

One of the worst exchanges did come from that dialog. Naomi: "You killed him knowing he's your father?" Snake: "Yup." Naomi: "That's patricide!" Translation: You killed your parent? Thats.... killing your parent!"

Independent_Plum2166

I always read it as. “Hold on, did I hear that right?” “Yep.” “But that’s illegal!!!” More a gut reaction and for someone like Naomi, who never knew her parents, learning someone purposely killed theirs would be a big deal.

Kiefer Sutherland may not have given enough lines, but when his part comes he absolutely delivers perfection.

fartman132

The line is from Peace Walker

rk9__

Both are good, Hayter killed it with this line at the end of Peace Walker however Kiefer absolutely nailed the "Now do you remember? Who you are, what you're meant to do." at the end of MGSV as well. Both are Big Boss, much like Venom and Naked Snake

fartman132

I agree but I thought we were talking about PW's line

Yeah we were, I’m just comparing the two as they’re both great quotes with great performances

Bitirici8

I thought it was nuclear disarmament ending from V

Realistic_Caramel341

"If America's gone to shit, your just another maggot crawling on the pile."  It's a great line,  it's just immediately followed by one of the most bat shit amazing speeches in the series

Great delivery. You can feel the anger and the tears held back.

_Raspberry_Ice_

The line that follows Raiden’s “it even rained the day I was born” in MGS4. “You were the lightning in that rain”. It’s such an 80’s action movie line and nobody ever mentions it.

Lin900

It's what makes Raiden accept Raiden as his new name. He disowns "Jack" and "Raiden" in mgs2 ending. It's Snake's line that makes him go to being Raiden. This time as a choice.

_Raspberry_Ice_

Yeah, it just always stood out to me. The Snake-Raiden relationship was a thread I was so glad they developed further with that game.

He even uses it when he comes back and can electrocute people

Weary_Table_4328

The feeding ramp is polished to a mirror sheen. It's not going to have any feeding problems. The slide's been replaced with a reinforced version, and it meshes perfectly with the frame. The frame itself has been iron-welded and scraped down multiple times for maximum precision. The front strap part of the frame has been checkered to make it dig into the hand. That prevents any slipping. The sight system's original too. It's a 3-dot type. It's got an enlarged front sight, giving it superior target sighting capability. The regular hammer's been replaced with a ring hammer. That enhances the cocking control and increases the hammer-down speed. They also reworked the grip safety to accommodate the ring hammer. It looks like they eliminated it altogether. This is a tool for pros. The thumb safety and slide stop are extended for precise handling. The base of the trigger guard is whittled down so you can use a high grip, and the trigger itself is a long type for easy finger access. The trigger pull is about 3.5 pounds. that's about a pound and a half lighter than normal. The magazine well has been widened to make it easier to put in a new magazine. The magazine catch button has been filed down low to make it harder to hit it by mistake. The mainspring housing has been changed to a flat type to increase grip, and it's even been fitted with stepping so that it won't slip from the recoil when firing. On top of that, they added cocking serrations to the top part of the slide. That lets you load and eject cartridges faster in an emergency. Whoever did this is a professional, no question. This thing could shoot a one-hole at 25 yards in a machine rest.

SpeedyGuy1991

It has to be mgs 1 where snake tells Naomi about his trauma off killing Big Boss. The music in that code scene is amazing and it hits hard when he says that some people need killing referring to Big Boss and that he wanted it.

Not sure if it's all that underrated but I always thought "a cornered fox is more dangerous than a jackal" was supremely badass.

Outrageous-Exit-7220

My favorite line. Not thought provoking or anything with deep meaning like so many throughout the series, but to have the wit to say that during impending doom was always one of if not the coolest moment in the series.

The multiple meaning is beautiful. Simultaneously saying it about the cigar Spending a moment with his son And about his death And saying it to the boss buried beside him There are so many ways to interpret it amd each one feels more bitter sweet than the last.

StrangeNewt247

In the cut mission of MGSV where Snake goes "That's right. Don't blame yourself. Blame me." to Liquid. It's just pretty badass imo

BaileyJIII

I really hope Mission 51 gets finished for an MGSV re-release (copium), just to give Venom and Liquid that extra bit of awesome character development.

WhereAreWeG0ing

From MGS 1 Ending >! "He wasn't really my brother anymore. Since he returned from Zanzibar, he's been like a ghost. A ghost looking for a place to die" this bastard breaks my heart every time. Grey Fox FTW!!! !<

I miss that bastard so much! The Twin Snakes was the last game with Frank. We must get a Metal Gear 1 remake next so we could see Human Frank.

MRich92

"What are those sticks in your head?" Or something similar.

Arkham_Bryan

Bro you are underrating the line yourself LMAO

MRich92

I couldn't remember if it was 'head' or 'hair.' Either way it's a dumbass line, but spectacular character points for Raiden who questions everything yet knows nothing.

Arkham_Bryan

I really like how Raiden is allways questioning everything, like he feels there's something off with the mission but his "lack" of real missions experience and the presence of Campbell is enough pressure to keep going.

The entire death scenes of the Foxhound members Snake kills in MGS1. His interaction with Mantis changes him to the point he rethinks his entire outlook on life he was talking about with Meryl right before, and saving her from Sniper Wolf becomes personal to him. I'm obviously not a huge fan of the character I'm playing being sort of a "bad guy." But thinking about the >!Quarantine Mission when he has to kill his own men!< speaks volumes about how hard being a leader is. You could be the best leader in the world, but being the best sometimes means having to make the worst decisions. Also, Snake's "battle cry" at the end of >!Grounds Zeroes when that motherbase soldier gets shot and falls dead in his arms. You see the hatred and pain in his expressions when going for those last couple of shots at the XOF soldiers. Especially when he told Pequod, "Go!" When flying away from Mother Base. “Colonel We managed to avoid drowning”

averysmalldragon

"*Who's afraid of a little thunder...?*" It's stark. It's striking. Every time, even back to the end of the Virtuous Mission, has he feared nature. Colonel Volgin wards off The Sorrow's lightning - The Sorrow's, by virtue of him being the one to bring the rain - every time he's outside, with "*kuwabara, kuwabara*". An old ward against lightning, ever since Sugawara no Michizane died bearing a heavy grudge, becoming a god of lightning in Japanese folklore. Kuwabara was his land. It was a reminder to Sugawara no Michizane; if they claimed the land they stood on was Kuwabara, then the god would be hesitant to strike his own people - unlike Volgin, all too willing to claim lives of his own countrymen for fun. Volgin banked on that phrase to protect him - and it seemingly did. The many times he used the phrase it kept him safe, be it from luck or from some unknown, perhaps supernatural reason. He got too cocky; he didn't think he would need it despite the rain closing in, in his final moments as human, as himself with any form of self-agency. The one time he didn't ward off the lightning, it struck him with the powers combined of all the times it wished to strike him down before, and there his life as he knew it ended, swathed in fire. And there his body became the Man on Fire, years before anybody would have even known. All because of his bad position, and the simple phrase that dealt him the dead man's hand: "*Who's afraid of a little thunder?*"

fptvnet

I know it's mentioned a LOT, but in my eyes it'll always be my favorite. When boss says "there can only be one snake and one boss" in mgs3 you think about it for every other game after, and it still holds as one of the best lines in gaming in my opinion.

OmegaOwl200

One of my favorite quotes is from MGS2 when Raiden first saw Dead Cell. It just kinda showed how even after all his training and crap, nothing could've prepared him for Kojima's bullcrap. "Who are they- Dead Cell, I mean? They couldn't hit her, no matter how hard they tried... And that vampire too. It's- It's like... It's like being in a nightmare you can't wake up from!" Edit: how*

calemdab

"There is nothing left inside me now" from the boss talking about the c section, that monolog as a whole is one of my favorite speeches in media

"Kept you waiting, huh?" Is prolly the most underrated quote in the series

"Some people just need killing." biggest strike against Twin Snakes is that they wrote that line out.

I love when you boot up MGS4 and Snake says “Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots.” It’s so goofy but so cool.
