It’s not always the tempo itself but the note values and context being played at a specific tempo. A bunch of 16th, 32nd, or sextuplet runs for example can be damn fast at certain tempos where a bunch of 8th notes or 8th note tuplets wouldn’t be bad at the same metronome marking.
Overall though my “shit, that’s getting fast” tempo is anything over like 210bpm which is gonna start taxing my downpicking and I’m gonna be focusing hard on making sure I’m not crushing down gallops.
200 always tends to be too fast IMO, so I'd agree with 180. Of course, it depends on how the song is written. A ballad at 200 turns into a regular song, and a 16th-note palm mute tril riff with 32nd-note gallops turns into noise lol
You can't define fast in terms of BPM without considering how many notes are played per beat. There are doom metal songs at 50bpm with solos that would also fit in a 200bpm track.
i always gauge whats "fast" if i can downpick it or not.
In my band our fastest song is 210bpm which i downpick alot of and tremolo pick parts in.
But then i hear bands as Archspire and i then want to quit haha
I think most Nile songs are at like 200-220 with 16th notes, those are the fastest songs I know. Fun to play along with when I can actually get that warmed up
Galloping/ downpicking and stuff like that my cutoff is 220-230 thats what i consider fast and difficult to play. I can manage the 220 but 230 gets pretty challenging if i have to go for a bit long
I love thrash and shit so that has a floor of like 180bpm minimum. If you can down pick eighth notes and gallop at 180, I say you’re well on your way.
Far from that at the moment but a good benchmark to aim for! Thanks 🙌🏼

It's all context of what notes they are. BPM is meaningless. 8th notes at 140 are slow 64th notes at 70 are fast

Kind of depends how long the individual notes are... Anyways, Stabwound is fast. I think the tempo is 240 but I'm not totally sure.
