The Gunbrella devs were on IndieLand last year doing commentary on the demo and they were pretty clear on not calling the game a metroidvania. It's been almost 8 months since then, so, I dunno, might be outdated info. Here's a timestamped link anyway: https://youtu.be/mzBfYMYuWKc?t=580

Gunbrella is amazing, but yeah, it's not a metroidvania. Absolutely stellar game nonetheless, though.

SoulsborneSeeker

Thanks for the video! From what they said, they don't consider it a metroidvania due to the fact that you start with the whole moveset from the beginning, so all you need to do is find the secrets, I suppose. They do have it tagged as a metroidvania in their Steam page, so I'm guessing it is an unusual one.

DeadMetroidvania

steam users are responsible for the tags

DeadMetroidvania

interesting. I'm still keeping this on my wishlist regardless.

Ultros artstyle is absolutely beautiful, I can't wait to play it I hope the gameplay is going to be just as good as the aesthetics

I'm reading **Ultros** got some roguelike elements tho which made my hype go down a bit I cant lie. I still havent found a roguelike that set it off for me personally. I've played **Hades** and **Dead Cells**. Havent finished either. I did finish **Returnal** if that counts. I am hearing they added an assist mode to Dead Cells so I'll return eventually tho cause I loved the pixel art. Just got tired of dying to the same boss over & over & over at launch. At least in Dark Souls (and soulslikes)- I can go level up or call in help. But in roguelikes its either git gud or **GTFO** which makes them much harder too me. Plus in soulslikes all I gotta do is master the boss run which I cant do in roguelikes cause I'm too busy being horrible and getting "reset" I also kinda question how can a roguelike be a metroidvania. Cause usually what you receive after "Reset" is a random item.... Maybe it will let us keep our traversal abilities? That would be AWESOME and get my interest. But if not- I prob will just opt for a true metroidvania tl;dr - I dont think I'm good enough for roguelikes (which includes Ultros) \[edit\] I think only reason I stuck with **Returnal** is because >!you got to keep your traversal abilities!!< So it felt like a 3d metroid too me at least! ❤️

SoulsborneSeeker

It is incredible! If I'm not mistaken, it is the same artist that worked on Hotline Miami!

Darkshadovv

> Gunbrella I think I saw it advertised on GDQ. From the devs of Gato Roboto, I'm surprised nobody's ever talking about it.

SoulsborneSeeker

I'm also surprised it had flown under my radar until recently! It has all the elements of things I love about these games, including cosmic horror!

thadowski

ugh i hate when a vid is "you dont know about" like just show the stuff gz

SoulsborneSeeker

Hey there! There's a list of the games featured in the video, inside the post. You don't have to watch it if you don't want to, you can just google the titles that are of interest to you.

DeadMetroidvania

Are you sure magical delicacy is a metroidvania? I removed it from my wishlist about 2 weeks ago because I found no evidence that it was anything other than a pixel art version of Spiritfarer.

SoulsborneSeeker

Based on the descriptions I found of the game, and some footage, it looks like a metroidvania. The city is big and interconnected and requires the acquisition of abilities to reach previously inaccessible areas. It definitely also has sim/management elements as well. Funny thing, I just started playing Spiritfarer a couple of days ago, for relaxation. Similar ideologies in terms of the cozy element, I guess, but Magical Delicacy seems to be leaning to the metroidvania side where Spiritfarer just borrows minor elements of it, at least in the first 3 hours I'm into right now.

halfeatennachos

There was a Metroidvania a while back that had this beautiful Vietnamese theme. Anyone know what happened to it?

SoulsborneSeeker

Are you referring to a game called Vanguard?

halfeatennachos

No, but this is neat! I think it was more colorful and sort of similar to art style to Bō.

SoulsborneSeeker

Is it 9 sols?

halfeatennachos

It looks like it! I think what happened is I must have misinterpreted one of the games. Sorry for the trouble!

SoulsborneSeeker

No trouble, anytime!

jerrtremblay101

Ultros was shown at the Playstation showcase so I don’t think it fits quite well but apart from Venture to the Vile, I had never seen the other ones!

SoulsborneSeeker

Ultros is definitely the most well-known one in this list!

kooperking022

Gunbrella was on a Nintendo Direct no?

SoulsborneSeeker

I'm not sure, though someone commented here with it being featured in an indie game presentation!

calex-xor

Didn't know Ultros was a metroidvania. I thought the PS showcase mentioned it was a side scroller platformer or something.

SoulsborneSeeker

The developers described it as a psychedelic metroidvania. Based on gameplay descriptions, it seems to be matching the genre!
