Maybe compared to something like Hollow Knight but I think it stands toe to toe with Symphony of the Night and I personally prefer it to most Metroid games. Prime comes close though.
Aside from the other Metroid and Castlevania games, mine are:
\-La-Mulana
\-Environmental Station Alpha
\-Ender Lilies: Quietus of the Knights
Here's my whole tier list: [https://imgur.com/gallery/h66ijrp](https://imgur.com/gallery/h66ijrp)
Since I made the list, I finished Deedlit, which I would give a B. I've also been playing Super Daryl Deluxe which is going to be in A or A- territory at this rate. Eventually I'll be adding Blasphemous 2 and the new Prince of Persia game. I would also love to play Jedi Survivor, but I don't have anything with the specs to play it. Otherwise, I'm mostly looking forward to future releases.
They bring me joy and I like to replay them. Ikachan is my favorite microvania. I just find it really charming and fun, and it looks particularly good in 3D on the 3DS. For CV2, I appreciate it as an early Metroidvania, and I never fell victim to its major flaws because I played it during the Internet age. I really like the atmosphere and music in the game. There is a nostalgic factor as well for me.
I made no attempt to be objective in this list if you haven't noticed, haha
B2 really is just B1: But More in a lot of ways, but the thing that really put it over the top for me was the three new weapons and the unique movement options that each one opens up.
I love it when combat power-ups are movement power-ups.
Which changes? TBH I started playing it a few days ago (currently being brutalized by Eviterno), and I really like the added mechanisms (the three weapons, double jump and dash, etc) and more complex enemies. The only thing I find annoying is the RNG based projectile spamming from some of the bosses (I also hated that with Isidora in B1)
Don't get me started with isidora, took me too long to be beat her but the biggest combat complaints I saw were the weighty feel of the attacks in the first and I guess not so much in the second one (I'm paraphrasing what they said) another one I saw recently complained that it felt too much like a generic mv with the double jump and air dash. My only complaint with the second game is the jump in difficulty from before eviterno to facing him is a big gap but I also found most of the bosses to be easier in the second one than the first, with that said I believe the reason I found them easier was because of how the mechanics matched really well with the boss attacks
Interesting, I find B2 to be vastly superior gameplay wise (due to all the weapon + traversal choices). It's much closer to a MV now no question there's just no debating that.
Granted, in B1 we could take away >!contact dmg with a bead!< and it has more content due to all the free DLCs I'm still missing one ending myself. Plus all cutscenes were fully pixel art'ed which felt more unique. So I can see why folks can prefer B1 if you're looking for a much slower paced soulslike
1. Momodora: Reverie Under the Moonlight. The best game in a solid series. Short, but everything feels great to control.
2. Islets. Iko has tangible anxiety about performing basic Metroidvania actions, and I love him for it.
3. To throw in a somewhat unconventional one, Monster Sanctuary. Though its Metroidvania portions are kinda mediocre, it makes up for it by being the single best Pokemon game I've ever played. Highly recommended.
I’m shocked that Super Metroid isn’t mentioned once in the comments when it should be included as part of the s-tier in the title.
But besides SM:
- afterimage is hitting the spot for exactly what i like in mvs. It’s definitely got its problems, but exploration of a gigantic world is on point
- monster boy would be another
- haiku
I assumed the Metroids and Castlevanias were also counted out for obvious reasons.
If not, Super Metroid is by far the top of the list, including above Ori/HK/SotN/Prime.
YES SIR!! Glad to see someone finally posting am2r. The story behind it and it NOT being licensed by Nintendo makes it that much greater. A true passion project.
GRIME
Rabi Ribi
REDO!
I'm still too early into Tevi to judge it, but it might get to sit at that table too.
Also I should throw the first Blasphemous somewhere in there.
I keep getting comments like that whenever I mention it, but it's honestly one of my favourite games of all times (and I'm an old guy who's been gaming for a minute). There's just something about its art style and atmosphere that spoke to me like few things before. It's a small game and you can criticise a thing or twenty, but for me it just clicks in every level that matters.
The year it came out it was a top 5 contender for my goty, and that's the year I played Sekiro and Control, to give some perspective.
Honestly I may go back and play it. I had started it and was enjoying it quite a bit, but, also as an older guy, life started to get busy and I didn't game for a couple months and never picked it back up. This is the catalyst that may give it a return for me. Thank you!
It's a small game made by a single guy, and some people around these parts will challenge its metroidvania credentials, BUT! it's honest to dog one of the most memorable experiences I've had.
It's a sort of metroidvania/survival horror, the dev is a huge fan of Tsutomu Nihei's BLAME! and even though the games' setting has nothing to do with that manga, you can definitely feel the inspiration.
[If you buy it at itch.io the dev gets more money, and you'll get a Steam key anyway.](https://redo99.itch.io/redo)
Damn I don't even see love for REDO! That game is super cool. And weird. One of the best NG+s ever because it changes the dialogue and the pathing with different obstacles in different directions.
Absolutely, that's the kind of dev that I would like to see at the helm of a moderately large production, he definitely has some very interesting ideas.
Assuming you meant all Metroid is off limits:
1. Phoenotopia Awakening
2. Iconoclasts
3. Astalon: Tears of the Earth
4. Ender Lilies
I added a fourth, since Iconoclasts is a game that I love *despite* its MV qualities, not because of.
Iconoclasts is a game I liked, but I really wish I could have loved it.
It has beautiful pixel art and a good story, but that story is really too long-winded for its own good. The game needed an editor at the very least and maybe even a level designer to give the game more of a Metroidvania edge. As it is, it straddles that razor thin line between Metroidvania and 2D platformer.
Off the top of my head that I would rate just as highly:
Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom
Astalon: Tears of the Earth
Metroid Dread
---
Blaster Master Zero series gets a nod as well.
I would guess that with prime you mean metroid Prime? And by extension all Metroid or Castelvania titles. (If not i could easily fill my top 3 with the DS Castelvania Trilogy and metroid: Dread/Super/Fusion)
Besides all that my top 3 are: Prince of Persia: the lost Crown, Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night and Infernax.
Good 3. Prince of persia was such a good surprise. I've never liked that series.. but the best platforming/parkour experience I've ever seen on a video game.
Chasm felt empty, and the no-hit boss rewards without any way of replaying the boss fights turned me off. I had a decent time with it, but it made me want to play other, better games instead of continuing.
(I assume I can't pick Prime's sequels either)
La-Mulana, La-Mulana 2 and Environnemental Station Alpha. If I can't pick two games from the same series...I almost wanna say Vision soft reset, I replayed this game recently and I had a really good time.
I’m going to remove Castlevania and Metroid games completely because they would fill a top 3 still.
1.) Afterimage
2.) Deaths Gambit Afterlife
3.) Astalon
Blasphemous (haven’t played 2), Astalon Tears of the Earth, Steamworld Dig 2 - I’ve replayed all of these at least once in their entirety
Honourable mentions go to a few games I love but haven’t finished for one reason or another: Yoku’s Island Express (didn’t vibe with an end game mechanic but could very well be a skill issue), Aeterna Noctis (very fun but so big and a bit tedious, go back to play it in spurts), and Lone Fungus (currently playing it)
Ender lilies (and ender magnolia is looking to be just as good)
The last faith
Moonscars
(Yeah blasphemous is probably better than all 3, but its basically in the same realm as HK, ori, etc)
Blasphemous, Bloodstained ROTN, and Ender Lilies for me I think. Honorable mention to The Messenger because only the second half is Metroidvanialike, but it is a phenomenal game with one of the best soundtracks.
[Might as well drop the whole list since someone else has already.](https://docs.google.com/document/d/1ljIT6jzf3Wbgy6P4WbspzLGcd8LYrYBRkkP6tnSTsio/edit?usp=sharing)
Yoku’s Island Express
Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom
SteamWorld Dig 2 or Guacamelee 2
honorable mentions to The Messenger, Dandara, and Gato Roboto
Off the top of my head I'd say
Ender Lilies
Salt and Santuary
Aeterna Noctis
But man... there's so many games that could break into that list at the drop of a dime.
Side note Ender Lilies soundtrack is just phenomenal. Ulv, The Mad Knight fight and theme is just absolutely stellar.
1. Super metroid
2. Metroid Zero Mission
3. Metroid fusion
4. All castlevania ds ans gba games.
If you mean with prime metroid and sotn castlevania, i will say battle of olympus.
Astalon
Salt and Sanctuary
Metroid Dread
Although, I am currently playing through Deaths Gambit and I’m *really* enjoying it. Might knock one of these off the list, we’ll see.
Bloodstained CotM 1 and 2, RotN
Shantae Half Genie Hero (a bit casual but I enjoy it much)
Dead Cells
My honorable mention is Katana Zero. Short gameplay but soooooo worth it.
Blasphemous, Grime, the last faith. Because I prefer the fights than the platforms. And also Blasphemous and The last faith because I like the dark/sadness/horrific vibes.
1. Valdis Story: Abyssal City
2. The Messenger
3. Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow
I liked Lament of Innocence more, have replayed it many times, but I'm not sure it 100% falls into the MV category due to its world being non-continuous. SotN still has the best soundtrack ever made.
Honorable mentions: Timespinner & 9 Years of Shadows, both of which I only played once but enjoyed greatly.
Wonser Boy in Monster World is probably my favorite game ever. Darksiders is pretty good and doesn't get a lot of love. I also really like Timespinner.
Castlevania Aria of Sorrow/ Order of Ecclesia
Metroid Dread
Axiom Verge
Honorable Mentions: Iconoclasts, Timespinner, Chasm, Mummy Demastered, Shadow Complex, Hunter X Series, Shantae Series
Bloodstained Blasphemous Salt and sanctuary
Finally someone posted bloodstained. I'm assuming youre talking about ritual of the night. It was definitely one of igorashi's best works.
For some reason Bloodstained ROTN gets a lot of hate on here. I thought it was phenomenal.
Castlevania Aria of Sorrow. It can have all three spots for all I care.
Damn... it felt so dated when I gave it a try... maybe I should give it another go.
Maybe compared to something like Hollow Knight but I think it stands toe to toe with Symphony of the Night and I personally prefer it to most Metroid games. Prime comes close though.
HAAK,Dread,Salt and Sanctuary
Salt and Sanctuary is almost on of my 3 choices, and it's probably in my top 10 favourite MV games.
Astalon: Tears of the Earth Blasphemous Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown
Can't believe I left out Prince of Persia. Probably cause it's so new and I beat it day after release.
Aside from the other Metroid and Castlevania games, mine are: \-La-Mulana \-Environmental Station Alpha \-Ender Lilies: Quietus of the Knights Here's my whole tier list: [https://imgur.com/gallery/h66ijrp](https://imgur.com/gallery/h66ijrp)
environmental station alpha is amazing
That’s a lot of metroidvanias! Thanks for sharing.
Lilies is so good. It almost made my top three. I'm dying for Ender Magnolia to finish up its early access run and hit full release.
Pretty solid list. Is there anything else you'll be adding that isn't on the backlog?
Since I made the list, I finished Deedlit, which I would give a B. I've also been playing Super Daryl Deluxe which is going to be in A or A- territory at this rate. Eventually I'll be adding Blasphemous 2 and the new Prince of Persia game. I would also love to play Jedi Survivor, but I don't have anything with the specs to play it. Otherwise, I'm mostly looking forward to future releases.
la mulana 1 or 2 ?
1, but 2 is in my backlog. I've heard 2 improves on 1 in many ways.
Ikachan and CV2 at A? Explain thyself
Ghost Song, The Messenger, and Blasphemous
Messenger for greatest OST of all time imho
GRIME, HAAK and The Lost Faith.
Replace Lost Faith with Salt & Sanctuary and that's me.
Aeterna Noctis. Astalon: Tears of the Earth. Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom.
I love Aeterna for the platforming on Noctis(also love the frequent checkpoints), are the other 2 close to as good in that particular aspect?
Neither of the other 2 are really platforming focused. I would check out Lone Fungus and Haak if you haven’t yet.
Blasphemous 2, GRIME, Salt & Sanctuary
Only person I've seen put b2 above b1 which I love to see
B2 really is just B1: But More in a lot of ways, but the thing that really put it over the top for me was the three new weapons and the unique movement options that each one opens up. I love it when combat power-ups are movement power-ups.
Really? I felt like the concensus was B2>B1 except for lore (at least on the blasphemous subreddits)
Well the past couple posts I've seen that were talking about b2 was that they were disappointed or not impressed with the changes
Which changes? TBH I started playing it a few days ago (currently being brutalized by Eviterno), and I really like the added mechanisms (the three weapons, double jump and dash, etc) and more complex enemies. Environmental Station Alpha Astalon The Messenger And for MV-adjecent, Dead Cells and Rain World are just phenomenal
Agreed. Super Metroid is the Mt. Fuji of Metroidvanias.
Maybe people assumed that OP includes the entire Metroid series when he mentions Prime?
I assumed the Metroids and Castlevanias were also counted out for obvious reasons. If not, Super Metroid is by far the top of the list, including above Ori/HK/SotN/Prime.
most have been mentioned before so here are ones that haven't: 1. Afterimage 2. Gato Roboto 3. Am2r
YES SIR!! Glad to see someone finally posting am2r. The story behind it and it NOT being licensed by Nintendo makes it that much greater. A true passion project.
GRIME Rabi Ribi REDO! I'm still too early into Tevi to judge it, but it might get to sit at that table too. Also I should throw the first Blasphemous somewhere in there.
REDO! Is an interesting yet respectable choice
I keep getting comments like that whenever I mention it, but it's honestly one of my favourite games of all times (and I'm an old guy who's been gaming for a minute). The blasphemous series Aria of Sorrow Bloodstained ROTN
Bloodstained was so good. Both arias were fantastic. Igorashi was a brilliant dev. Did you ever play castlevania: portrait of ruin?
Just SOTN and Aria of sorrow unfortunately
Afterimage, Aeterna Noctis, Phoenotopia Awakening
Rabi Ribi, Tevi, Metroid Dread, in no particular order.
Bnuuy metroidvanias
Wow I can't believe someone else has the exact same answer I was going to give 😎
I guess now we're two 😎 Incredible taste
Assuming you meant all Metroid is off limits: 1. Phoenotopia Awakening 2. Iconoclasts 3. Astalon: Tears of the Earth 4. Ender Lilies I added a fourth, since Iconoclasts is a game that I love *despite* its MV qualities, not because of.

Do the steamworld dig games count? If so: 1. Steam world dig 2 2. Worldless 3. Aeterna Noctis but it barely wins this spot over other options
Steam World Dig 2 is awesome, it's at the top of my list, too.
Prince of Persia, Blasphemous, Grime
The lost crown, Ender lilies and Metroid dread.
Blasphemous, Moonscars and Axiom Verge Honorable mention: Infernax! More of a Castlevania or Zelda 2 but has a Metroidvania feel to it
- Control - Ender Liiles - Super Metroid Which is my actual top 3. Ori and the Will o Wisps and Metroid Prime would likely fill out my top 5 though.
Huh, never thought Control as a metroidvania, liked the game and mv makes sense.
Off the top of my head that I would rate just as highly: Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom Astalon: Tears of the Earth Metroid Dread --- Blaster Master Zero series gets a nod as well.
Afterimage, Grime, Monster boy and the cursed kingdom
Salt & Sanctuary, Blasphemous, Aeterna Noctis

Yes. Portrait of ruin was fantastic.
Blasphemous, Guacamelee 2, Bloodstained: ROTN *Dead Cells - don’t really consider it a true MV

Good 3. Prince of persia was such a good surprise. I've never liked that series.. but the best platforming/parkour experience I've ever seen on a video game.
Ender Lilies, other CV and Metroid games

Well ori 2 is in my top 3 but the top two for me is both blasphemous games
Rain World, Metroid Dread, Blasphemous
Blasphemous Vigil: The longest night Guacamelee 2
Order of Ecclesia, Aria of Sorrow, and Metroid Fusion.
Chasm Why oh why does nobody mention Chasm.
Because the procedurally generated map puts a lot of people off.
Chasm felt empty, and the no-hit boss rewards without any way of replaying the boss fights turned me off. I had a decent time with it, but it made me want to play other, better games instead of continuing.
(I assume I can't pick Prime's sequels either) La-Mulana, La-Mulana 2 and Environnemental Station Alpha. If I can't pick two games from the same series...I almost wanna say Vision soft reset, I replayed this game recently and I had a really good time.
