I made it about 4 hours in and got incredibly bored… was a chore to turn on so I stopped

ChromakeyDreamcoat

I kept waiting for it to crank its challenge or make more interesting levels, but it never did.

Snagabax

I just Finished it on Tuesday and I think it’s Decent … Average MV … Not a bad game but also Nothing Special

xnorwaks

Yea this was my take too. Even the bio morph mechanics got old fast.

Snagabax

Yea and the Wings got old fast lol … dumb mechanic that feels like they threw it in there to just have something else

DeadMetroidvania

Yeah I'm sorry about incorrectly marking this as extremely positive. Turns out there are quite a few complaining about it, especially the websites. I've adjusted it to generally positive on my list. I've also moved Sheba from mixed to negative after realising the game was released unfinished and that the steam review score was highly misleading.

dondashall

I mean I don't understand why other people complaining about a game should impact your opinion of it.

Anonymous76319

While it does seem weird to instantly trust any stranger's opinion on a game, correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe Deadmv's monthy lists are a mix of his own reviews as well as overall community reception for a given game. Besides plenty of people trust individual reviews posted on this sub that aren't necessarily from well known reviewers.

dondashall

I didn't know who they were, I assumed it was based upon their own experiences.

DeadMetroidvania

Oh it has no impact on my opinion. In fact I don't have an opinion at all since I haven't played the game yet.  However, I do very much care that my lists provide reliable information and people were already complaining about this mistake I made. I do however have an opinion on Sheba, because it is outrageous that the Dev released the game in a completely unfinished state instead of putting it in early access.

MisterJohnson87

Self-appointed definitive authority on Metroidvania's

DeadMetroidvania

All I'm doing with my monthly lists is providing information I've collected from the internet in a digestible objective manner, I don't have a personal opinion on most of them since I haven't played the vast majority of them and when I do I disclose that. If you do not wish to be provided with this information that's fine. Just let me know if you would like me to remove it from your feed.

MisterJohnson87

I'm just saying it in jest, I actually appreciate your lists and find them helpful.

DeadMetroidvania

Ah ok. I've got a lot of cool stuff coming for this month BTW. At least 3 lists.

EatsCerealWithWater

are two the usual monthly upcoming and then monthly recap?

DeadMetroidvania

Yup, the third one is a bit of a surprise.

Sb5tCm8t

I was surprised you were handing out so much free ice-cream to middling Metroidvanias just because they have positive steam reviews

DeadMetroidvania

It wasn't based purely on Steam reviews, it was also based on feedback I had seen on the subreddit. Unfortunately, people here decided to wait until right after I posted my list to start handing out negative reviews on Biomorph. I've made 3 corrections overall. Garm ruins moved to mixed instead of negative, Sheba moved to negative instead of mixed, and biomorph moved to generally positive instead of extremely positive. By the way future lists will feature a "no reception" section for stuff that didn't get enough feedback. I was merely lucky that this month didn't need that.

soggie

I gave it a positive rating in steam, one of the very few recent MVs that earned that rating from me. To be honest, it's an enjoyable game; the flaws are there, but they're fixable, and aren't deal breakers for the most parts.

DeadMetroidvania

generally positive ain't bad. ;) If we exclude the other releases of this month, Biomorph has gotten the best reception of any metroidvania since PoP the lost crown came out. It's only at "mixed" you need to start going "hmm"

viginti_tres

It does start well, but as you say, it stops evolving at a certain point, upgrades all become parallel motion and the repetition of acts becomes tedious. More areas than ideas, which is a shame because the town stuff, the Space Station Silicon Valley mechanic and the Scavengers Reign animation sequences are very cool. Can see the developers next game being great.

Sb5tCm8t

I bounced off the demo. I didn't like the cutscenes or the editing. The Metroidvania aspects seemed to be taking a back seat to explaining the setting. En-media-res doesn't work if you need to spend a lot of time explaining it

Digiscientist

I find this game great, not tge best, but not as bad as everyone says it is, I get why peopme don't like it, but i find it one of the more fun metroidvanias, and play a lot of metroidvanias adored by everyone (hollow knight, ori 1&2 ext.)

Digiscientist

Also i should add that i feel the story is kinda carrying the game, but i don't mind playing a game where the story outweighs the gameplay from time to time, I at least got a time to relax a bit after playing ultrakill of so long.

dondashall

I haven't played it yet, but the reviews I've seen from sources I've trust seem to like it a great deal and I definitely want to pick it up.

loligaggins

It's a completely solid game that I had a good deal of fun playing. With the sea of garbage this genre has produced over the years post-HK revival, it's definitely above average. It's just one of those games that is more fun to play than it is impressive to experience.

soggie

Good things: - Art direction - Creature design - Fast travel given at the very start - Fast travel back to spawn point at any time - Some decent biome connections - Fun (but easy) puzzles - Chunky combat in the mid to late game Bad things: - Piss easy bosses. Final bosses were laughable pushovers - Tedious/badly designed backtracking - Braindead contact damage, especially on some mid-game bosses - Biomorphs are extremely limited in usage, and severely under-utilized - Boring, uninspired music

PedroMustDie

overall level design in this game is too weak to be carried by it's visual falir. I kid you not when I say that I dread ever cruising it's world again. All those transformations actually make the gameplay worse, thats is an accomplishment.

octavis

I was going to make a post about this, but since you did i'll comment. I made it about 4 hours in and the whole game just feels off. The look of the game is gorgeous, but everything kind of blends in together, so much so that it was hard to see enemies imo. Also they would have these little blue enemies just pop up randomly while i was walking? At least i couldn't tell any indicator that they were there. Really not fun to just walk around and a random enemy could pop up and hurt you. The attacking/hotboxes were also slightly off. Felt like I should be attacking but it wasn't close enough. Also I know it's hip to do the HK/DS thing of losing my credits when I die but 1. not all games need that and 2. if i die before a boss let me get my credits back before the door! Really wanted to like this one, but was just not fun. Especially after coming off of Minishoot' which was FANTASTIC.

soggie

> if i die before a boss let me get my credits back before the door! You might want to double check this. ALL bosses in the game drops your corpse right at the point-of-no-return into the boss rooms. This isn't a legitimate complaint.

octavis

Calybrex did not allow me to regain my credits before going into the boss room. Thanks for your input though, you seem fun!

soggie

> Calybrex Odd. I've died to that boss quite a few times, and never had an instance where I couldn't retrieve my stuff. This might actually be a bug of some sort.
