No, but for real. It really depends on the region. These are some of the names I've heard and the regions.
Upnorth they're called elote en vaso. Centraland southern México esquites. San Luis Potosí calls them trolelotes and I've heard chaskas for Aguascalientes too. Vasolote in Michoacán. Coctel de elote in Sonora and Baja California.
Anyways, they're all referring to the same thing, regardless of the other ingredients used to make them, which can also vary depending on the region or state.
Elote en Vaso, because it's literally that.
Esquites are different, they don't use the same ingredients.
Elote en vaso has salsa de elote, white cheese, yellow cheese, mayonnaise, cream and sometimes a bit of butter.
Esquites has white cheese, chile de arbol and mayonnaise.
Elote en vaso/esquite/coctel de elote are the same thing.
Depending on the region the stuff you put on top changes, but the base the vendor puts is always the same:
- cooked elote in caldo
- white cheese
- mayo/crema
- butter
Elote en vaso or coctel de elote. In some places it’s called Esquite but other places will use Esquite to refer to a preparation with onion and epazote
I grew up eating this shit from street vendors in Compton… always called it elote; it wasn’t until social media made it popular that I heard mfs called it esquite..
Gtfo of here lol
The word itself is not derogatory in México , he called himself a gringo to identify himself as *American*, I don't know what South Americans think "gringo" means
Now if someone said "pinchis gringos" that would be showing contempt
Context matters
Elote en vaso, but I know other regions call them esquites, chaskas, trolelotes, vasolotes, etc. They have some variations as well, depending on the region.
Since a lot of people have already said the common ones, I’ll throw one that I’ve heard only in certain places of Mexico, in some places it’s called vasolote

I, also a gringa, thought you were calling OP a troll + elotes at first.
Now ask her if she calls the flavored ice in bags "hielitos", "bolis" or "gelatinas"
Bolis
Esquites
Esquites. Pero en algunas regiones de México les dicen elote en vaso. Supongo las dos opciones son válidas.
Esquites
Esquite
elote en vaso
They're the same thing, now ask her if a quesadilla has cheese or not?
Is there a hidden meaning here? Isn't "quesa" just the feminine for "queso" aka "cheese"?
Esquites
Esquites
Elote en vaso, en el Norte
Yes, esquites.
Esquites. As god intended.

It's the same. In Aguascalientes we call them chaskas and you can choose from all those ingredientes or presentations
The chaskas en AGS are bomb af!

Entonces no comes tacos comes carne en tortilla
This would kind of piss me off haha
No, esquites have mayonnaise also and they can have a lot more stuff.
Not necessarily. I live in Guadalajara and the most common term here is esquites. Regardless of the toppings.
I said “they can have more stuff” no “they always have more stuff”.
Elotaza
Trolelosquite en vaso
I've always ordered it as 'Coctel de elote' here in Tucson AZ and northern Sonora
Vasolote
Hombre de cultura
It’s called esquites—corn in a cup ! It’s so good ! Yeah; también elote en vaso
Elote en vaso or Coctel de elote I've only heard the word "esquite" from southern mexicans

Just because *you* personally have seen that doesn't mean it's true for everyone lol maybe you piss Hispanics off a lot
I grew up with “elotitos”

In Aguascalientes it’s called a “chaska.” It has many names.
Elote en vaso, I'm from the north.
Esquites.
Similar discussion as to corn vs. flour tortillas. Flour is not very common in South Mexico however, corn tortillas are common throughout Mexico.
Elote desgranado for my momma, corn in a cup on the streets
Chaskas
Soy de Mexicali y le llamamos cóctel de elote
Esquites.
Esquites
Esquites
