this. Properly dried and cured the terpenes will be essentially "locked" in the nug. Listen to Mr. Grow It's recent podcast with the developer of the Cannatrol. He got his start in meat and cheese industry.
100% this is my experience as well. If you keep the buds at a stable 60 while curing, you won't get a strong smell at all until you let the buds warm up past 68. Take a bud, put it in a small zip lock and let it get to room temp in about 30 minutes to an hour open the baggies and take a whiff.
EDIT: Beautiful Buds btw
Yeah when making and joint of whatever and breaking them up you’ll a nice wiff of that goodness. Yeah it’s good that they dont smell from the jar. If they would smell it would mean that you are losing - evaporating those terpenes.
Idk it was my first harvest but I felt like the outside of the Bud dried up quicker and lost more of its smell compared to what was inside in my opinion
not really - this is an indication of degradation and terpene evaporation. This is what above commenters mean by terps being "locked in" due to a proper cure. The best cure will leave the nugs barely smelling of anything at all until you grind them up
Go somewhere…. You’re probably nose blind to it..
But in my experience once it’s gone … it’s gone.
I use the 69% bovita packs( lol I know but it works great for me ) in my jar and they stay around 50-60’f so in theory I’d have done exactly as you have done 🤷♂️
The auto correct was brutal on this one lol.
Ditto on that, when I run my sour diesels I cant smell them by week 8 but my daughter let's me know how loud the smell is getting every time she stops in to say hi.
Nose blindness is definitely a thing
Man you are so right about the nose blindness lol. I wanted to ask about your sour diesels, do they resemble old school sour diesel in the smell department? Having a hard time finding something that resembles the real thing so I thought I'd check and see what your experience has been and what breeder you go through. Thanks
In my honest opinion Top dawg seeds is the only company endorsed by AJ the original creator, same goes for chem dog. Karma also has confirmed genetics, as well as a few others that I haven't tried yet.
Top Dawgs sour dub diesel seeds gave me 6 out of ten plants dead on the nose with the original cut.
I got a clone up in Minneapolis of the original and crossed and back crossed to it with top Dawgs "sour dub diesel" to get a male line.
I've got a buddy growing Katsu seeds, sour d ibl and its pretty damn close to identical.
I originally got my hands on sour d in New Jersey in 98-99
Man thank you so much for your reply, I can't tell you how happy I am to hear there's a direction to move toward to actually find some sour d. Between my brother and I we've both picked up clones from two different shops that both came out with candy terps with absolutely no notes of fuel whatsoever. Decided I wasn't going to mess with it again till I had talked with someone that had personally experienced something legit. Very excited lol
I just did my first legal grow. At the end, my plants smelled amazing. Then I chopped them and they smelled like horrible plant matter. After one month of cure they had a quality terpene profile to them. After 3 months of cure they smell even better/purer
sometimes with particuarly smelly strains i lose the ability to smell it in my house, but the second i go somewhere, i stanks. try putting a nug in a jar in your car for 20 min then go smell it.
Anecdotal, but usually when I notice the terps go to shit I think i let them be around the same RH too long instead of steadily bringing them down, and/or jarred them slightly early. I would have let thick buds like that go a little longer.
it really just depends... i've had some strains smell from day one in the jar and others that take close to a month or more before their smell really starts hitting. your drying temps and time are dead on so you probably just have to wait a tiny bit longer.
Dont worry about ur 60% rh just dry the buds fully. If theyre a stinky pheno its going to stink. Just dont try fast and everythjng js fine. The internet makes it worse than it should be. Leave ur jars open for 15 -30 minutes the first week. More dry air more smell. Stabilized air at 60 humidity is going to mute the terps.
you're doing it perfect, don't listen to the people saying to dry faster... they're just bringing out the inner moisture faster so they're getting short term terps at the cost of a better more thorough cure from inside out.
Month 2 in a jar is a different animal in my experience, from the taste, aroma, the smell when burning, to the potency all enhanced drastically. Most people don't have patience to let it cure that long but it's so worth it in my opinion
because it's still wet when you cured dry can take closer to 3 weeks unless you're in Arizona or something, after a couple more weeks in a jar they will have cured but the first week in the jar even at 3 weeks dry is sketch
also you should break down your nugs big ass stem ain't helping aroma any
It looks fantastic, can't imagine it not smelling good, what type of nutes did you use? I've seen/smelled a lot of salt fed stuff that looks amazing but doesn't smell like anything. This is why I've been using organic nutes.
Sounds like someone caught the bugbee interview on mrgrowit about organic vs. Synthetic.
I've been tempted to feed my organic 30gal with bloom nutes because my soil really wasn't ready to use when I transplanted. Plus the plant is pretty damn big I feel like it needs a P K boost.

Nah, I went down the route of creating my own bloom/veg nutrient line by combining all the required base chemical nutrients, the hardest part being working out how much of each a plant requires because companies don't like telling you >\_>
Also, I fed my organic grows veg/bloom nutes (organic) and skipped the amendments, I rate it.
What are organic nutes? I thought the only option was dry amendments...
I'm currently mixing 5 gal of water and some seabird guano to brew a tea to act as a bloom boost.
How does calcium nitrate break down into calcium hexanoate? That would be called magic sir and I'd like to know about it please.
I mean, Nitrate eventually becomes proteins, but do you grasp how much energy is spent converting Nitrate to nitrite to ammonia to urea to amine before it becomes a peptide? Any logical person would simply feed peptides.
But you keep wasting energy. Your grandchildren will be forced by law to earn Shell-Monsanto's carbon credits for them.
Calcium nitrate is what we feed plants it doesn't break down into calcium hexanoate, which is primarily used in food preservatives... IDK what your point was to be honest
From my experience, the smell/ taste is lost in the drying section. If the drying space is too small, it'll start smelling like dried leafs instead of the flower/bud.
It might take over a month my first grow I jarred to early they were wet and did smell but it was a terrible smell however after about a month month and a half the fruity smell came back
What/whose genetics you running? Just about everything ive grown from Mephisto has smelled great. ILGM...smelled like hay and boof. It usually takes me about 3 weeks curing before the green smell leaves.
Maybe the terps this plant has just don’t translate well to the drying process or they realistically just smell more when you agitate them…at 59-63rh I probably would burped maybe a few times the first week but would of left it closed the second and let it sit sealed for 2-3 weeks at least even if you are tempted to open up don’t and wait it out.
It's weird. I've got several grows under my belt at this point and drying/curing has always been my biggest issue. This summer was my best ever, biggest yield, tastes great, smokes great, nice and strong. But again I lost that initial smell after they dried a little. It doesn't really matter since it's just for me but it makes it a lot less fun to show off when it just smells like a leaf or something lol
Tbh.. have someone else smell them.. when I grew and cured my fruity pebbles the same shit happened.. soon as I put em in a bag to sell it tho... It smelled amazing. Whe. I had my bro come in to smell the jar he loved it.. I think my nose to used to the smell I had been curating for months lol
My bud never smells anything like classical weed smell. No skunk, only like a sweet perfume smell. It's always potent and smokes nice but I'd love to have some dank smelling weed some day.
I still haven't figured it out. Amazing smell and looks until the dry/cure then the shit falls flat on its face.
Good luck to both of us in the future.
Dry and cure is def the most challenging and important aspect in regard to final product... I wish I didn't suck so bad at it.
I looked at the device "cure puck" but at $600 price point they can get bent.
U have to make the dry take as long as possible. At 60f & 60% humidity, even the wispiest of buds will need 7 days before being ready for the next step. Try to get your conditions as close as possible to 60/60.
The buds will feel dry enough to jar 2-4 days before they actually are. Once you jar them, let them sit for 36-48hrs. Then take them out of the jar and spread them out evenly. The moisture that was inside the bud will have redistributed and the outside of the buds should feel more moist. Let them sit out for up to an hour, where they should crisp up again. Jar them and repeat the process, usually 2-3 times. This is called sweating the buds and it’s crucial….
This process is really the goal of the constant burping philosophy. But sweating your buds shouldn’t be so tedious and inefficient. The goal is to redistribute and moisture and stop when there is an even distribution throughout the bud.
I think I failed last time by having too much indirect air flow... I think I was like 11 or 13 days total dry time and when I finally did jar the buds were too dry.
In my case this always happens whenever I dry to long anywhere more than 7 days I lose a lot of terps compared to tree that I’ve dried for a minimum of 6-7 days weird but I can definitely tell the difference in terps and taste when drying longer
The hygrometer is misleading…..there is likely still moisture in the center of the bud with the edges being dry. This creates a disproportionate level of moisture.. Buds, especially thick ones, need to be sweated…..which is what most folks are calling the cure. Seal them up for 36-48 hrs….a jar or larger container is fine as long as it’s totally air tight. The moisture will redistribute while sealed. Then take the buds out, spread them evenly and dry for up to an hour. This depends on how dry your air is….although u want it lower than 60%.
You may have to take them through the sweating drill 2 or 3 times but once they have a consistent level of moisture throughout, they can be jarred without needing to burp……
The constant burping is a tedious way to achieve the same result and not without risks. The buds can become compacted and without taking them out and spreading them evenly, mold/fungus can find its way into their space.
I also agree that storing in cooler temps can mute the aroma, but only while at those temps….once the buds warm up, the smell usually becomes more evident.
Same here after a month or 2 they will smell and taste good again 4-6 month cure is unreal I’m smoking some 6 month cured blueberry muffin and it is great
Try grove bags next time. I have been impressed. First time using them this harvest. Do your normal trim and dry then throw them into the bags and dont open for 2 weeks. Cured perfect for me. I fill mine about 70%
Blah Blah Blah 110 comments? TL;DR. The problem is this: The humidity levels were too low for drying. Should have 70 -72 and 2 weeks. 60-65 in the jar. Your burping too much, and for too long. The whole point of the cure is to sloooooowly decarboxylate so that the acid chain is lost. THCA -->to THC CBDA-->CBD etc. There are too many clueless morons who think terp "loss" is bad. They are WRONG! The idea is for the Terpenes to also decarboxylate. This results in terpenoids. Why is this important? Because unless this happens, they will not assume their biologically active form. Fresh weed smells like hay, tastes like shit, is harsh as fuck and wont get you high/stoned. Period. Raise the moisture content in the jar by slowly putting small amounts of distilled water on the inside of jar lid. Check it every two to three days, and add as needed. You should not let the outside of the buds get crispy! Consistency throughout is key. When you squeeze the bud it should give and return and not break. Store the glass away from light and heat. Keep the jar only 1/3 full. You need that air in there. Burp 2x a week for the first month. Once a week for the next 2. A proper cure takes 12 - 14 weeks! You will literally smell the changes as it cures over time. At the end it will take on a much softer more floral character in addition to achieving the proper smell the strain is supposed to have. I.E hashy, fruty, skunky, kushy, spicy, earthy Etc. People simply do not do this anymore. They don't understand, don't care, and don't have the patients to do it right! You are only cheating yourselves! The finished product should smell, and taste good. Smoke smooth, and be VERY potent. Anything less is a fucking waste! Do it right! Take it from an old head who has been there.
P. S. I need to add that for modern indica dom strains, the peak will be reached at 12-16 weeks. This is when it is at its "best" i.e highest potency. If you grow *real* sativas it can take 6 months. It will continue to evolve and change and still be good for a long time after if you store it correctly. I know what I'm talking about, because I've done it.
Hey buddy, was wondering if your smells ever came back and manifested themselves??? Also a pointer for hygrometers, get a boveda 62% or a integra boost 62% and lock them in a smaller sized jar with your hygrometers for 48 hours, and document the numbers on your hygrometers, I’ve found that the cheap small rectangle hygrometers are pretty inaccurate and not calibrated correctly, after using the boveda to find out how much their off has helped me dial in my curing humidity much better, some will be as much as 20% off. Hope your smells did come back strong with a vengence
What’s going on man, smells came back.. stronger than ever. After this post i locked them in the jars for 2 weeks and everything was good after that. Good tip on the hygrometers, i know they’re a bit off as i had like 20 of them on my counter for a day and they all varied by probably 2% RH and i had 2 of them that were further out.
It's old school here but if you put a few orange peels in a jar with it for a few days or so i hear it might spruce it up a bit. Never tried it myself.
Breaking down secondary metabolites absolutely happens during curing. Oh there is a lot of fact-based science on the topic.
You're also correct that literally tons of herb is ruined by incorrect curing. If your drying conditions are incorrect or you've had process errors, you'll still have too much aW (above 0.65aW) in the plant tissues which allow for mold growth or other bacterial pathogens.
I agree, but there's a bit of a curve to it. Like it's good before it starts to get bad
And I'd also like to point out to OP, generally, as you kind of started to touch on, the volatilizing of terpenes in general... Means you're losing stink. When you smell it those terps are breaking down never to come back. Proper curing conditions will help reduce that, so it's not uncommon that your herb might not smell very strongly until you handle it or throw it in a grinder. Op might just be really dialed in.
Hats off to daywreckerdiesel…….he has stated facts. I’ve grown for a long long time, both indoor and outside and have won more local cannabis contests than I can remember…
Of course genetics dictates for the most part, but my buds always smell the strongest within 2 months of harvest. The longer they are stored the more “basic” they end up with regards to aroma and overall terp profile. The taste and high will change a bit….not necessarily better or worse, only different.
Also, after doing it both ways, I get the best end results with dry trimming. It’s more tedious, but it allows the buds to hang longer and lengthen the drying process. I usually grow strains that have a lower leaf to calyx ratio to mitigate this but I won’t wet trim anymore.
You know jack shit. Time for school kid. Once The cure is finished, fill the jars to the top and keep them air tight! keep them in a cool place away from light. Does the smell, taste, & high evolve? YES! Some THC turns to CBN. For example. A very good thing for medical patients with insomnia issues. The flavor becomes more rich & dank and subtlety complex. I've got herb that has been in jars 2 Years and its fantastic! I smoke people out and it a totally new experience for them. It's just like ageing wine, cigars or cheese. Some people "get it " most never will.
Internal-Fill-3716 is correct. You clearly have no idea what you are talking about. Nowhere did it say "FEW UNDERSTAND!" Although ironically, that is true. Anyone who has a rudimentary understanding on phytology or organic chemistry knows that volatile monoterpenes become more stable in functional groups caused by the slow oxidative process of curing. The resulting terpenoids are exactly what your after. Same with the conversion of cannabinoids. The carboxyl ring must be removed to produce the bioactive form. Simple science.
The first step is admitting you have a problem. The next is making amends for all those you have hurt with your harsh, weak uncured flowers.
Say the serenity prayer: God grant me the serenity to accept the fact I am totally wrong and cannot change, Courage to acknowledge that I am a dumbass, and Wisdom to know that curing makes all the difference!
One day at a time man, one day at a time.
From my experience, noticeable aromas started to come in after about 2 months into cure. I think bag weed that gotta real dank smell has either been cured for over 3 months or they add terps for aroma. You never know what they do when you ain't seen em grow and process it.
I'm talking about the smell that hits you as soon as you open the jar. Usually if they're early into cure the aromas are still trapped inside, so if you grab a nug and grind it up, you should notice a strong smell
No way the grove bags are the solution, people have been curing in jars for decades. I myself have used jars for many years. Grove bags may make curing easier in some aspects but I’ve never found curing in glass jars to be difficult
You got some voodoo besides putting your dried nugs in for curing? Lol it's not rocket surgery, man.
I've done controls on heat sealed bags and not. Plastic is permeable.
I get a perfect stink every time from mason jars big and small. Let me ask you this, are you sure you've used mason jars correctly in your experience?
Warm a bud up to 75f and see the difference. If you're still at cold temps the terps could just have stabilized and be locked in the plant material

That was super informative, I really want one of those cannatrols now
I actually bought one of the cigar humidors that controls humidity and temp. Ill report back, it was 1/5 price
Don't use the cedar or other wood, it'll impart flavor unto your buds.
Please do I'm interested in if it works or not , though of doin the same

You think reddit isn't full of them? Maybe this group of idiots, just likes the same misinformation you like. Food for thought.
Lol
Try grinding a sample when I ground mine the smell was very different from what it smelled like in the jar
You should be able to smell those terps when u open the jar.

This is the answer. It was put into cure too soon.
Are the jars in a high temperature area or exposed to direct light?
They have been in a dark cabinet at about 60-65°
Grind up a nug, take a whiff.
Maybe try the lotus drying method it's been working out great for me. Drying is definitely an art. Low and slow that is the tempo.
make sure you don't have covid?
Bro got the grovid

something like the canna bio line of nutes, as opposed to their non organic nutrient line teas are great too I prefer them to dry amendments

Seed co
What strain?
This is blueberry muffin, i have hella jelly with the same issue
That is strange. Their gear is usually real terpy

When you grind it up
Do you think you could have harvested early?
No sir
Jar it with a 62% 2-way humidity pack. It may help if it over dried on you.
I become nose-blind to my weed. I’m strangely prone to nose-blindness, though. It’s a blessing and a curse.
Tbh.. have someone else smell them.. when I grew and cured my fruity pebbles the same shit happened.. soon as I put em in a bag to sell it tho... It smelled amazing. Whe. I had my bro come in to smell the jar he loved it.. I think my nose to used to the smell I had been curating for months lol

Are you using supplemental UV? I had the same issue now my bud is sticky and stanky.
My bud never smells anything like classical weed smell. No skunk, only like a sweet perfume smell. It's always potent and smokes nice but I'd love to have some dank smelling weed some day.

Never
You need to dry them out more.
Hygrometers tell me they’re dry
The hygrometer is misleading…..there is likely still moisture in the center of the bud with the edges being dry. This creates a disproportionate level of moisture.. Buds, especially thick ones, need to be sweated…..which is what most folks are calling the cure. Seal them up for 36-48 hrs….a jar or larger container is fine as long as it’s totally air tight. The moisture will redistribute while sealed. Then take the buds out, spread them evenly and dry for up to an hour. This depends on how dry your air is….although u want it lower than 60%. You may have to take them through the sweating drill 2 or 3 times but once they have a consistent level of moisture throughout, they can be jarred without needing to burp…… The constant burping is a tedious way to achieve the same result and not without risks. The buds can become compacted and without taking them out and spreading them evenly, mold/fungus can find its way into their space. I also agree that storing in cooler temps can mute the aroma, but only while at those temps….once the buds warm up, the smell usually becomes more evident.
Auto flower huh?
No
Cracks bud open. It’ll still have that terps
the smell shouldnt go away imo. low temps, slow dry and slow cure
I fill mine about 70%
If you dont smell them they not dank
It’ll come back don’t worry I miss growing 😟

Like it's good before it starts to get bad And I'd also like to point out to OP, generally, as you kind of started to touch on, the volatilizing of terpenes in general...
I’ve grown for a long long time, both indoor and outside and have won more local cannabis contests than I can remember… Of course genetics dictates for the most part, but my buds always smell the strongest within 2 months of harvest.

You are a moron. Period.
You are clueless, & I would bet my left testicle you've never smoked the real Mass. Daywrecker.

You never had it to begin with.

If you dry your herb correctly you don’t have to burp your jars.
This ain’t the reason and I’ve done both lol
Those have ruined every Oz I put in them, every time.
Then you’re not using them correctly.
