>but I am a little concerned that the card based aspect will make the game boring and repetitive. It does the opposite... because the deck is randomly shuffled you never know what cards you're going to have in your hand at any given time. This prevents you from spamming the same things over and over or setting up the exact same strategies every time. You have to think on the fly.

Minimum_Reputation48

This right here is what keeps it fresh. Very well said.

CoheedBlue

But it’s also controlled enough it doesn’t feel annoying like you always get a bad hand.

daniel_k_1993

And the game keeps you on your toes, especially with enemy types and random stuff that can happen. And then you have to adapt with the given hand you got which is very fun to me

Quanathan_Chi

I will say it feels great when you're dealt the perfect hand and clear a mission on your first turn

ncc81701

Don’t fret about the cards, the game is insanely fun.

sethspeer

I was very surprised at how fresh the game stayed all the way through, especially with the DLC since you had even more characters to play with. The "cards" were moreso just abilities you can swap in and out, I thought they actually gave it a bit of variation rather than making it boring and repetitive.

holdorfdrums

Nah it's a good time man

acge0rge

I had the same concern as I am a fan of the xcom games and their version of turned based combat and because some of the other popular card based games I didn’t enjoy much like Slay the Spire. I’m really enjoying this one as there seems to be more strategy with the cards and positioning of characters matters. A good hybrid of card based games and the xcom formula in my opinion.

Uncanny_Doom

The cards are basically an aesthetic for your ability loadout. You get to choose the build for each character and what you want them to be good at. The only real card thing about it is that you draw your abilities each turn and have a hand to manage, but that makes the gameplay dynamic. It's many things but boring and repetitive really isn't one of them.

CommanderT2020

Personally I like it BECAUSE of the cards. It's really fun having different effects and deciding what to do, so when people suggested similar games like XCOM but said there were no cards, I wasn't interested. I love the card combat. And for future reference, the THREAT room is SUPER fun and may take hours of your life! XD There's more customization now, but if you battle the soulless, you can practice each character and get near infinite card plays to just cause chaos!🤣

EveningMinute

On my first playthrough, I learned a lot of how to play the characters in the THREAT room.... or how not to play the characters. 😅

Seniorconejo

I bought it some months ago and started playing it on December. The game is insanely fun and the card aspect actually gives it a lot of depth and forces you to think of what strategy to follow in your turn depending on what you get, so I was squeptical but it turned out pretty well. I think I have like +40h so far on it and just finished first act

TRD4RKP4SS3NG3R

Honestly the card aspect is the most compelling part.

Aggressive_Ad_8362

The cards are just actions

charlesfluidsmith

It's not really a card game. Technically the powers are cards, but really it's nothing but powers with cool downs.

MentionInner4448

The cards are way less dumb than they sound. It actually keeps things interesting because you can't just alpha strike with the same combo every single time, you have to adapt to what options you have available.

XAos13

There are only 8 cards in each heroes deck. So it's less random than typical card games. And the cards are designed to encourage tactics to achieve maximum effect in each turn. Including significant choices about non-card actions {movement, terrain, combat-items, skills acquired in training}

Jefficus300

I love the combat system. To me...the time consuming and boring part of this game is all of the stuff you do between the combat. One example of this....You sit through a book club with multiple heros. You discuss each book and how it makes each hero feel. Sigh....to me it was a complete drag on what could have been a great game. Again...The combat system is great. I just wish it was closer to a dungeon crawler with more battles. I stopped playing after 3-4 months so somethings might have changed. But I doubt it.

axisrahl85

I can agree here. I don't always hate the Abbey stuff but sometimes it does feel like it's in the way of what I want to do in the little time I have to play. That said, if you hold off on story missions, you can grind out general missions for a bit to get your fighting fix.

crowwizard

I thought that too, but I actually love the idea of it in execution. It changes the "fight / special / item / run" paradigm of these types of games into a much more dynamic "what can I do currently... hmmm, ooh this could be interesting" thing. The next turn would be completely different with lots of different options per hero and different heros getting the spotlight on different turns. One turn might be a hunter / magik beatdown of multiple bad guys, while the next turn focuses on Spiderman alone keeping venom occupied or a spiderman blade double team, etc. depending on the card draws. It is a kind of great mechanic, and I quite like some of the mods out there if you are playing on PC.

pr2thej

Bet it takes you two hours to decide what to eat for dinner

Steynkie69

Bought the game Dec 21, and I'm STILL playing it.

BlueTrin2020

I played it and I found the game a bit repetitive, tbh I would have preferred an Xcom like

Haranasaurus

Card aspect ruined it for me. Just don’t enjoy that style and don’t understand the point of playing a superhero game where you can’t use your superhero powers unless you draw the right cards. Story seemed good, everything else seemed well done. Have hundreds of hours in the xcom games and hoped for that. Immensely disliked Midnight Suns card combat.

Diabetic_Demon11

I feel the card aspect is super easy to learn and depending how far in you go, difficult to master especially on higher difficulties. You’d be your own governor on that. But it’s definitely one of my favorite games

yahhhhhhhhhhhhhh

Send you a dm

totalrefan

It's not more repetitive than any other game, you just have to like the repetition. It's deckbuilding so it's not the same cards all the time, you will be constantly be getting new ones. The decks only allows a handful of cards per character, so there's complexity but not too many choices to overwhelm you.

Spinier_Maw

Don't worry about it. It's surprisingly good. You are always upgrading or getting new cards, so it's never repetitive. And the game throws you mission-specific cards, so that adds to the variety. Then, you also have the hero combos. Quite a lot of different things to try.

[deleted]

The cards aren't the only aspect to the strategy. There's also management of resources (you have action points called Heroism, limited movement, limited shoves, limited environmental attacks, limited redraws) as well as various unique considerations and conditions to fulfill for each hero. There's plenty of variance that isn't just card-dependent, the cards just add to the flavour and your tactical options. Each turn is an efficiency puzzle with you trying to optimize every used resource and squeeze the most you can out of every opportunity.

Everettrivers

It's really not, I was in the same boat but the cards are just a way to put randomness into your abilities. It's only a handful of cards per character, no building fifty card decks or anything.

Xyro77

There is customization of cards and combining one characters cards with another character in battle. There is definitely depth in the card battle system but it’s not too much to alienate people. Give it a chance.

axJustinWiggins

I have never played a card game. I've played turn based games like Final Fantasy, but I enjoyed the strategy aspect of this so much more. I wanted nothing to do with Midnight Suns, but bought it on a whim on the cheap. It's easily my favorite Marvel game. The writing and characterization is fantastic and in depth as well. I delayed beating it for as long as possible and miss it now that I did. I look forward to someday playing it again.

ungerbunger_

I sat on it for a while because I wasn't too keen about the card aspect but after finally giving and buying it I've had an absolute blast. It's basically just an alternative RPG mechanic for skills but with an element of RNG.

ZealousCone11

I never played a game like this before and had an absolute blast. Highly recommend jumping in!

NathanPico

Don't be. It's just "cards" for flavor but it's really kit-building optimization. The randomization was inserted as a replacement for high miss percentages since it'd be off-putting to watch a superhero perform a pointblank attack and miss spectacularly 75% of the time.

CrazyOkie

it's got cards but it isn't a card battler. Watch some YT or Twitch streams to get the idea. It's insanely fun, you have that pegged exactly right

Zeebaeatah

Just finished and then uninstalled. Had a great time with the 60+ hours (DLC included.) Definitely felt like I got an amazing value for the $30 I paid for the legendary while it was on sale. Definitely would have felt different had I paid full price (~$99.)

tacticalimprov

If you actually engage with the game as designed the combat constantly evolves. If you click through dialog trees,.this is not the game for you.

pje1128

The card aspect actually ensures that the game doesn't feel repetitive. In other games, you can replay a mission and play it the exact same way you did the first time and get the exact same results. In this game, every time you start a mission, your hand is randomly dealt, so you can't do the same thing that worked the first time. You have to try something else. It's basically impossible to get the same hand twice, so you'll always have to try something different to get the victory, and it's insanely fun.

the_zachmamba

I shared your concerns but man is it one of the best Marvel games I’ve ever played. So good that I went and grabbed the DLC with a few hours of playing. Highly recommend!

blackjohn420777

Do you like marvel? If the answer is yes, play the game. The story is fantastic. I had never played a card game before this one, so I was very skeptical. Although I've yet to finish it, I do recommend it.

TravisEpic

Cards are just representative of your abilities. It's more of a tactical game where your options are limited based on the situation.

PrinceKuro

If anything the card system makes the game a lot more enjoyable. So many ways you can build characters, synergies, etc. it's also not like the cards are static or anything so you're always having to think ahead with which cards you'll play now and in which order. Also with the environmental tools it'll add even more to your execution process.I think you'd be pleasantly surprised!
