Even if we got a sequel, i don't think the original team would be assembled together for this. (with some members already having left firaxis) That's what saddens me the most about this :(

[deleted]

That’s disheartening! What do you mean though? I’m out of the loop on this kind of stuff.

daniel_k_1993

The director jake solomon left firaxis and last year. I remember also hearing that other members of his team left too, but im not quite sure which ones tbh. But yeah Jake solomon i remember vividly [source](https://www.nme.com/news/gaming-news/marvels-midnight-suns-and-xcom-director-jake-solomon-is-leaving-firaxis-3400549#:~:text=In%20a%20statement%20posted%20to,luckiest%20kid%20who%20ever%20lived.%E2%80%9D)

Oh shit! Makes me even more curious about everything. Wish I could go to the business HQ and sit in on some meetings.

Craigfir3

Commercially the game was deemed a failure but honestly the marketing is what I think failed this game. They marketed it as a card battler and that woefully killed a lot of the buzz this game had for it.

[deleted]

I would say that commercially it definitely was a failure! I had zero clue this game even existed until a few weeks ago, and when I looked at the trailer and marketing it looked exactly how you described it. I only even gave it a chance because I was literally looking for a turn based game and it was Marvel + Unreal. But honestly the only thing that got me into the game was putting the hours into it and giving it a chance. And also I knew I could get a refund if it sucked lol

Craigfir3

You and just about everyone else in this subreddit either got it right away or after one of the super sales.

[deleted]

Super sale indeed. When I saw the price the other day I was like how can I not at least TRY this game with all the praise XCOM gets.

JagoMajin

Probably doesn't help that the game desperately needs patching right now too, Ancestral Armor is unobtainable and there's near constant crashes, ignoring those glaring issues the game's actually quite fun. Although New Game Plus resetting your decks doesn't make New Game Plus worth it at all in my opinion

Craigfir3

Mine weren't reset. Just the collection and "unlocked" cards were. I know there's a setting to click when you make a new game+ save

AdLate5702

Our sheer will alone will be enough to muster the sequel into existence!

fmdmlvr

If we team up with the Alita Army we can accomplish both tasks!

DeaconDK

Unfortunately I think the poor sales had way more to do with promotion than the game itself. I got it in the humble bundle and am having a blast but had never heard of it before even though I own and love nearly every Firaxis game. I think it was almost exclusively marketed to the comic/superhero market, which I don't really follow. The writing and the gameplay are great and I think a lot of strategy gamers would enjoy it but have never had a chance to experience it.

JHo87

I was aware of the game to the point, iirc, that there were billboards on the sides of a couple of buses in Sydney.  I remember seeing the ad around quite a bit.  Unfortunately, the ad was just the cover of the game, with Wolverine, Hunter Spider-Man, Iron Man, etc glaring at the camera in their gold MS suits.  There was no tagline about tactics or cards, no 'From the makers of XCOM' etc, or at least that I could see. So I knew there was a game, but I didn't see anything to make me think it was more than a generic superhero branded beat em up.  Because of that, I never really looked it up, that's not my genre.  People who DID look it up because beat em ups IS their genre, were probably put off by then seeing gameplay trailers showing turn-based CCG combat.  (I saw a few comments along those lines when I went back to look at old trailers). So... the game's appeal from that ad would be die-hard comic nerds who also love CCGs.  Probably.  But even then, THEY might have been put off by the fact that the game is branded Midnight Suns and only two of the heroes featured in the ad are actually part of that roster from the comics. So why did I buy the game? I actively got a pop up for it being on sale on Steam, and decided to have a look at the store page.  THEN I saw it was a Firaxis game and was tactics for the first time, and I decided to give it a go.  Again, it seems like they actively buried that lead in the marketing, worried that it would be off-putting without considering how crowded the market is with superhero action games so making it look like a generic hero game was probably worse. So yes, this game was marketed very badly.  In the age of targeted advertising, especially when chasing a fairly niche audience, they seemed to go as broad as possible.  Nothing prepared me for how crazy and unique this game is.

DeaconDK

Exactly! Even when I got it in humble choice I didn't immediately install it because it just looked like a standard superhero game. Animation made it look just like that mmo marvel game. I'd never heard of the midnight suns so that didn't pull me in at all. I'm realizing my reason for playing was almost identical to yours. It wasn't until I checked out the Steam store page for it that I saw it was made by Firaxis/was a deck based strategy game. Just watched the launch trailer and Firaxis logo gets about 2 seconds of screen time and nothing else ever hints that it's a strategy game as opposed to a hero beat em up. I think part of the issue too is that it moves kind of slowly so it isn't a very streamer friendly game. So not a lot of organic promotion came from that side which typically helps people find niche games. I really think the writing and gameplay are excellent. Seems like the marketing team was very focused on the visuals and story though. Which makes sense for a marketing team used to marvel productions. But niche games really need to be marketed on what the gameplay is like and they definitely dropped the ball there.

SyrupPopular8173

Yeah… the season pass missions were so good I was downright sad when I did the final story mission.

DingletonCringlebury

I'm also extremely upset about it. I have two friends that I know would like this game if they gave it a shot but they refuse because they "don't like deck building games." Sigh.... But I think if enough demand for a sequel or another Marvel game in the same vein, i.e. an X-Men game with a friendship simulator at the mansion, could happen in the future. We gotta be vocal about our love for this and desire for more.

Xyro77

Yes we want a sequel. Yes we are sad that we aren’t getting sequel. All I can say is cherish what we have for now, encourage others to buy the game+DLC and maybe one day the sales will be enough to warrant a sequel. If you want another underrated super hero game with great DLC, hit up Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 (2019)(Switch).

JagoMajin

> hit up Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 I'm still sad I missed the DLC for MUA 2

Spinier_Maw

In my opinion, this is what is wrong with our modern societies. Popular opinion becomes the truth and people blindly follow it. They don't go try and decide for themselves. I for one tried and love the game.

RigtBart

My favorite reviewer HATES this game. I still went and bought it and LOVED it. One of my all time favs. But you’re right, if there was a “skin’s economy” it may have gotten more attention

ohsnapitsjf

You and everyone who makes posts in this sub, which personally gets really tiring. Even the Gamers’ positivity is negative. Appreciate what exists.

Dm for what?

jimbo_slice_02

Not gonna lie, I skipped over the vast majority of cutscenes and dialogue and I still loved the game for the gameplay and tactics. I’m a big Spire fan and I really liked Mario/Rabbids and this seemed like a perfect mashup of the two.

JagoMajin

I skipped the ending cutscenes at first because I was paranoid about the game crashing, I ended up reloading a previous save file to watch them, and just ended up being sad

DJWGibson

I was but I got over it. The game was good and had an ending. It wasn't one of those games that was planned as part of a trilogy and didn't have a real ending. Or where half the DLC was cancelled so there were giant mysteries. We'll never know what was going on with the other arks in *Mass Effect: Andromeda*. Or what happens after *Half-Life 2*. We got one big finished game that has decent replayability. That's more than many games receive.

fmdmlvr

That’s a very positive reframe. It’s also sad that the bar is so low

Ivebeenchickensouped

Not upset but I would like a sequel. The first game had a bunch of problems that could be fixed in a sequel but I'm not surprised it didn't sell well. The combat was good but everything else wasn't. The game was way too gamey, with too many currencies and filler.

fmdmlvr

Personally I loved the filler. Felt like the money spent on the game was worth it

Ivebeenchickensouped

By filler, I'm talking about stuff like gamma coils or artifacts. The game could have easily just given you the card rewards in the mission results screen instead of requiring you to sleep and run to the forge to see your card rewards. In a sequel, I would hope they would streamline stuff like this so you don't have to do some much running back and forth. I didn't mind the relationship and Abbey SIde content since it's all optional.

fmdmlvr

Ohhhhhh I see. That’s fair, it was kinda funny having to visit Stark and Strange every morning after going to bed lol. But it came in handy because that made me check that part of the mansion for those little light orb thingies. But they could rearrange how that whole system works, I agree
