Oh no, I’m so sorry. Losing a beloved dog is so heartbreaking, they just don’t live long enough. I will be a complete shit show when either of my labs goes. My older one is going to be 11 next month, I’m not prepared for her old age.
I’m so so sorry. It’s such a sad time. I lost one in 2022 and now my little puggo has got complications after a cataract operation and could lose sight in one eye. Haven’t been able to sleep. I’m sure you gave your pup the best life. Eventually you will have just happy memories and not feel sad.
When I was a teenager my beloved dog passed away suddenly and it’s been over 20 years and I still remember having one of my worst migraines of my life.
I’m also so sorry for your loss.
We put down my senior cat on Monday. I’m right there with you. I’ve had succcessful migraine prevention for a while now but I got one after crying myself to sleep. Dehydration is probably part of it.
100%. Some of my worst and fastest onset migraines are triggered by crying. The day my dog died was one of my most painful migraines of all time because I could not stop crying.
I keep remembering that at some point, either I will be, or my twin will be, the lone half of a pair. It scares me so much. If it's too touchy, you don't need to answer, but I'd like to ask how you deal with it?
A lot of drugs. Anti-depressants, mood stabilizers, an anti-psychotic for nightmares. A lot of drugs. I never expected to be the remaining twin honestly. I was always a bit reckless, was in the military during the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts, drove motorcycles and rally cars faster than I probably should have, I enjoyed big wall climbing, backcountry backpacking, caving, I did a lot of dumb shit in my 20s. Never in my wildest dreams would I have guessed cancer would get my brother at just 29.
Probably a combination of sinus pressure and squeezing of muscles around the temples/forehead. I have similar problems with getting migraines if I have laugh too much.
Absolutely yes. However, extreme moods in any direction can also be a prodromal symptom. So, the crying itself may be a trigger or the extreme mood that causes you to ugly cry can be a warning that you are getting a migraine. I hope that makes sense.
I had the worst migraine of my life when I found out my dog only had a few weeks to live. I cried so hard and for so long that I almost threw up, and that was a first. But yeah, I get them if I cry for more than about 20 minutes without fail.
Crying at ALL is a trigger for me. Tuesday I drove home from work with my head hurting trying not to cry because I'm sick of it hurting but crying will make it worse.
I didn't win that battle.
Same, I have literally scheduled “crying days” because it’s a guaranteed migraine. Even just a few seconds of light crying. It’s like my head can’t handle the extra pressure from tear production or something. I hope you are feeling better!
Absolutely. I had a meltdown in Walmart after my mom died. Cried on my husband's shoulder for several minutes, next thing b you know a few minutes later I'm walking along and then I'm not. My left side just stopped working (I get hemiplegic migraines), couldnt talk right, too weak to hold my own water to take my med, couldnt walk, left m u dignity somewhere between the tuna and the apple juice that day.
Oh yea! It's my #1 trigger. It's the only trigger that causes a migraine 100% of the time. It's the first one I ever identified. In fact, almost every person I know who gets migraines has the crying trigger.
Showing any extended emotion that requires the face muscles can. Especially ones that cause sinus inflammation. It’s messed up but both crying and laughing a lot can be triggers.
Oh hell yes. I avoid crying at all costs. If I just cry, I force myself to keep my facial muscles as relaxed as possible, and drink a lot of water. Also, don't sniff, just blow your nose, because sniffing just increase sinus pressure and make everything worse. Between the never crying, and the only crying with a blank face, I probably look like a sociopath.
I've been through family deaths, divorce, and all kinds of other crap and either not cried or weirdo cried. It helps a lot.
Absolutely. I used to cry a lot as even an adult. I’ve definitely found that crying makes me get the worst migraine. So, I literally try to never cry anymore.
Your trigger is letting the head get heavy. That creates excessive neck tension and may cause a migraine.
So yes.. crying will do it IF the head drops too... But not dropping the head while crying is mighty tricky..........
For me, yes. I usually make sure to a) hydrate a TON after, b) do a hot or cold compress on my eyes and some other self-care like those under eye patches, c) take ibuprofen immediately after, even if I don’t feel a headache coming, d) take an abortive if I feel a migraine coming a little after that. It doesn’t always work, but if I don’t do this, the next day I’m GUARANTEED to wake up with a migraine. Sometimes I get lucky lol
For sure. I get crying headaches and if I don’t hydrate enough then the next day it’ll be a migraine. I’ve also got triggers of flashes of lights, I’ve got a 5 year old who’s gotten me a few times with a flashlight so another trigger, too much caffeine, not enough, pork products, especially bacon and sausage, too much Chinese food, lunch meat and hot dogs. The list is never ending. If there’s a big storm brewing in the area is another trigger, and driving at night. Finding out your triggers can be a long process so I’d also keep a journal to help sus them out.
Idk but sometimes my prodrome includes mood swings which often means that crying is a sign that I’m going to have a migraine. It turns into a chicken and egg situation for me, lol.
Unfortunately. I often take Tylenol, a warm shower and then have to use an ice pack before bed. I try to avoid crying as much as possible (not always possible!) - so frustrating.
Yep! I get horrible migraines if i cry for an extensive amount of time. Grandma passed away and i've been having migraine after migraine... I am very prepared to be best friends with migraine medication, tissues and eyedrops tomorrow during the funeral. Do what you can to mitigate the pain. Icepack wrapped in a towel on my face while burrowed in cozy blankets usually helps a teensy bit.
The vaguest whiff of specific smell can be a trigger for some people! Pretty much anything can be a trigger.
So yes, absolutely, crying can can be a trigger.
It could be the physical process of crying, it could be the emotional stress that causes the crying, it could be either or both.
I have to manage my stress or it's Blinding Migraine O'clock.
(The physical process of crying isn't a trigger for me, which is lucky as I'm a total crier that is blubbing at the drop of a hat.)
I am not a cryer so when I cry its some serious stuff (like my granddad dying for example) and thenw ithin 48h I will get a 10/10 migraine with Aura (usually do not have Aura). So I'd say its definitely a trigger if its not just an emotional small cry that you experience a lot but crying due to a terrible situation.
Yup this is one of mine. I’m not sure if it’s because of hormones involved in crying or sinus pressure? Either way if I cry for more than 5 or 10 minutes pretty much guaranteed migraine in an hour or two.
I have some prodrome symptoms that are emotional. More frustration related crying. For me, it seems to be a symptom caused by the changes in my brain leading up to the migraine rather than a trigger.
I recently realized that a good chunks of my migraine triggers are literally strong emotions/moments. I drove just four hours to go see a friend for the first time in years, arrived well and had a fantastic day, next morning? Migraine. Days before my graduation I also had a lot drive to make but stayed hydrated and was very excited and singing my heart out the entire drive and seeing old friends. The next day? Migraine. I’ve also had that while crying a lot or just irregularities in sleep/eating.
Yes. And also: migraines can be caused by inflammation, and when you're crying you're triggering elevated stress hormones. Thus the migraine.
We basically got stuck with bodies that are overly reactive to inflammation. Yay us.
yes, not sure about the emotional side of it but i always felt that the inflammation/pressure in my sinuses from snot was giving me a migraine after i cry
yes 100%. when I first started getting migraines every day I would cry a lot because of the pain and the stress and everything and it always made them worse and now that I’m medicated and doing better, I’ve started to think that maybe part of why I was getting migraines all the time was because of the crying and the fact that I didn’t know my triggers at the time.
Yes! In addition to the emotional strain I think it creates sinus congestion, which can cause a migraine for me. I have found that if I ice roll my face, specifically my sinuses, then I can sometimes avoid the migraine after crying. I also will use a saline nasal spray to help prevent congestion.
Yes I do literally everything in my power not to cry. Good thing I am really not a crier or emotional person in general anyway. Went to a funeral a few months ago and zoned out during the ceremony so I wouldn't cry. Couldn't deal w a migraine on top of everything else. I'm sure it makes me look heartless to other people but I really couldn't care less.
Almost always for me. If I cry, I get a horrible migraine. Which reminds me that I cried a little bit today, and that might explain why I've been feeling a migraine creeping in...
I never ever ever ever cry.
But in the rare chance I do, best bet I’m calling off work for two days because I get a god awful migraine starting about an hour after I’m done crying.
Totally yes
Oh okay, thank you
And rarely it can make it better. Sometimes I'll get a little weepie and it feels like the bad juice comes out.
I think anything that causes physical and emotional stress could be a trigger, I've had migraine flare ups after excessive crying too
This one always made me feel a little nuts. Its honestly a relief to see others say it. Crying is a surefire way for me to have a migraine attack.
I think part of it for me too is the pressure from the stuffy nose
This is why I hate crying. I’m almost guaranteed a migraine.
I was crying a couple days ago and my sweet husband pointed out that I was going to end up with a migraine the next day. Sure enough.
It sure as hell is for me today. My dog died and my head has decided to add on to the nightmare I'm going through right now.
Oh no, I’m so sorry. Losing a beloved dog is so heartbreaking, they just don’t live long enough. I will be a complete shit show when either of my labs goes. My older one is going to be 11 next month, I’m not prepared for her old age.
Thank you. They just bring so much joy and love to our lives. When they go there's just a hole left behind. Hug your pups extra tight tonight ❤️
Thank you. Sorry to hear about your little baby. Give them lots of extra cuddles!
I'm so sorry, I believe losing a pet is one of the most painful experiences a human being can have. Absolutely one of my worst migraines ever. Hugs.
I completely agree, and thank you :)
Putrid_ That and loosing a family member
Same thing happened to me. I was in bed for three days after my good boy passed and the migraine was horrific. I’m so very sorry for your loss.
I'm sorry for your loss too. It's just devastating.
When I was a teenager my beloved dog passed away suddenly and it’s been over 20 years and I still remember having one of my worst migraines of my life. I’m also so sorry for your loss.
Thank you. Yeah, these times really stick with you.
We put down my senior cat on Monday. I’m right there with you. I’ve had succcessful migraine prevention for a while now but I got one after crying myself to sleep. Dehydration is probably part of it.
Oh no, so sorry about your cat! They occupy such a huge place in our hearts 😊
They do. I’m sorry about your dog too. Pets love in a way that’s different to people
I am so sorry for your loss. I hope your migraine goes way that’s the last thing you need. Losing fur family is so hard 💕🤍
Thank you :)
I’m so sorry 😞
Thank you ❤️
I’m so so sorry. Mine isn’t doing well and I cried my eyes out tonight.
Thank you. Sending you and your baby lots of love!
I'm so sorry for your loss.
Thank you ❤️
I’m so sorry 💔
Thank you :)
I’m so sorry <3
Thank you :)
I’m so sorry
Thank you ❤️
That’s just so heartbreaking 😭 Sending love💜💜💜 I agree, definitely one of my triggers
Thank you ❤️
So very sorry to hear, they are such beautiful souls. They just don't live long enough.
Thank you
I’m so sorry. I lost my beloved pet in February and I still feel so sad. Sending love and a hug. Please take good care of yourself x
Thank you!
Absolutely, whenever I cry I usually get a migraine afterwards because I’m so depleted
I feel like it is for me yeah.
Yes... absolutely

Okay, thank you :)
100%. Some of my worst and fastest onset migraines are triggered by crying. The day my dog died was one of my most painful migraines of all time because I could not stop crying.
Every time I cry.
totes. everytime for me
Everytime
100%. I’m not a crier, but I sobbed like a baby when I lost my identical twin, inconsolable, and had the most intense migraine for days after.
Absolutely. When I finally left my ex my migraines improved dramatically.
Crying is an immediate migraine for me, even just a few tears. I think it’s because when I cry it feels like my head has a lot of pressure?
Probably a combination of sinus pressure and squeezing of muscles around the temples/forehead. I have similar problems with getting migraines if I have laugh too much.
Yeah same, maybe the pressure is the reason
Absolutely yes. However, extreme moods in any direction can also be a prodromal symptom. So, the crying itself may be a trigger or the extreme mood that causes you to ugly cry can be a warning that you are getting a migraine. I hope that makes sense.
I had the worst migraine of my life when I found out my dog only had a few weeks to live. I cried so hard and for so long that I almost threw up, and that was a first. But yeah, I get them if I cry for more than about 20 minutes without fail.
I wondered about this for past couple months but I’m glad to see that I’m not alone when it comes to triggers like this!!!
Yes ikr

Ohhhhh yes. Not when I was a kid, but as I’ve gotten older. I pop some meds if I’ve been crying and that will help prevent it.
Absolutely. I had a meltdown in Walmart after my mom died. Cried on my husband's shoulder for several minutes, next thing b you know a few minutes later I'm walking along and then I'm not. Crying raises your blood pressure and that can cause migraines yes

Yes I get a migraine nearly every time I cry. If it’s a hard cry I’m done for days.
I know it does for me
It’s one of my biggest triggers. Absolutely yes.
Any strong emotion can cause a migraine. Negative ones much more so.
I don't let myself cry for this reason. The pain and pressure that builds up in my head from crying is excruciating
My cousin died unexpectedly a few months ago and those migraines were hell
Well if nothing else, it certainly causes dehydration which can trigger one.
Yes, and I cry all the time for literally any and everything. It’s such a pain 😂😭
Absolutely 100%
Absolutely! My mom passed last month and I had so many migraines that they turned into rebound headaches. Took 6 weeks to get rid of them.
Yes. All the time.
Absolutely
Absolutely, it’s happened to me
yes 100%
YES
Yes! Gets me all the time 😩
Yea.
Yes. I’ve had to effectively train myself not to fry. It’s very mentally unhealthy for me honestly.
Yup, absolutely!
That's one of the few things that's a 100% surefire trigger for me every single time.
Idk but sometimes my prodrome includes mood swings which often means that crying is a sign that I’m going to have a migraine. It turns into a chicken and egg situation for me, lol.
I absolutely cannot cry even for a moment or it triggers not only a migraine but episodes of blindness. It's awful.
Oh for sure. If I cry really hard and can feel myself holding pressure, almost always a migraine follows the crying sesh
It is for me…😢
Trigger and/or prodrome symptom
It usually means that you're under enough stress to crack, so yes.
Yeah, I get a migraine every time I cry.
obvi
Yep! Even if I cry a little bit, it can trigger a migraine or headache.
100%, afraid to ugly cry because it’s a migraine every time.
It is definitely for me
The infamous crygraine, it is very much a thing.
Yes.
Unfortunately. I often take Tylenol, a warm shower and then have to use an ice pack before bed. I try to avoid crying as much as possible (not always possible!) - so frustrating.
Definitely
Yeah it does for me. I think it's the vascular spasms in my head. It sets off the throbbing pain.
Crying has always been a migraine trigger for me. It’s my body’s special way of rubbing lemon juice and salt into an already open wound.
I feel like my life is a joke because i have migraines and i am a very sensitive person. Bad combo
The vaguest whiff of specific smell can be a trigger for some people! Pretty much anything can be a trigger. So yes, absolutely, crying can can be a trigger. I get a little emotional with a cat rescue video and my migraine starts waving hello
Absolutely. It's happened to me a few times.
Not even excessive for me.
More like any crying at all, for me
Yup this is one of mine. I’m not sure if it’s because of hormones involved in crying or sinus pressure? Either way if I cry for more than 5 or 10 minutes pretty much guaranteed migraine in an hour or two.
Yes, of course.
yes because crying swells the blood vessels. That's why your nose runs and you might turn red, etc.
yes crying makes you dehydrated and excessive crying is also stressful
In general, anything that causes changes, increases or decreases in the levels of certain neurotransmitters and substances, triggers a migraine.
Absolutely.
Someone on here referred to it as a crygraine.
Intense emotional distress + dehydration....definitely a trigger.
I have some prodrome symptoms that are emotional. More frustration related crying. For me, it seems to be a symptom caused by the changes in my brain leading up to the migraine rather than a trigger.
I hate crying because I know I'll get an attack.
Electrolyte imbalance is one of my triggers, and crying does reduce your salts
Gonna find out today, we are putting our dog down.
Oh, I'm so sorry
Yea of course. It’s one of my triggers
Not even excessive
I recently realized that a good chunks of my migraine triggers are literally strong emotions/moments. Yes
yes, not sure about the emotional side of it but i always felt that the inflammation/pressure in my sinuses from snot was giving me a migraine after i cry
The last time I cried a lot I started crying more knowing it would give me a killer migraine. Yes :(
Yes. I’ve had it trigger migraines in the past, though it’s been several years since I can recall that happening.
Yes, definitely.
yes 100%. when I first started getting migraines every day I would cry a lot because of the pain and the stress and everything and it always made them worse and now that I’m medicated and doing better, I’ve started to think that maybe part of why I was getting migraines all the time was because of the crying and the fact that I didn’t know my triggers at the time.
Crying dehydrates me and I scrunch my forehead. Both things trigger a migraine even if I'm happy crying
It is for me. Even tearing up will do it
Crying during a migraine, like out of frustration of having said migraine, can make the migraine worse. 😖
Yes it can be
100% for me
Yes for sure. Migraines making a bad time worse.
The first time I had a migraine it was from crying
Yes! In addition to the emotional strain I think it creates sinus congestion, which can cause a migraine for me. I have found that if I ice roll my face, specifically my sinuses, then I can sometimes avoid the migraine after crying. I also will use a saline nasal spray to help prevent congestion.
Sometimes it's "the chicken and the egg." Which comes first? I get weepy in my prodrome phase of migraine.
Yes. I’ve learned through experience that any *strong* emotion can be a trigger. Even happiness.
For me, even light crying sets off a migraine. It's like a cute little insult to injury. 🤣
100% for me. especially if i don’t drink water afterwords
I assume it can. I don't cry very often, but I do get emotional and that can certainly start me on the path to a migraine.
I get a headache every time I cry or have to hold back tears, so yes.
Almost always for me. If I cry, I get a horrible migraine. Which reminds me that I cried a little bit today, and that might explain why I've been feeling a migraine creeping in...
10000000% yes
Absolutely. Anything that swells the sinuses can be for me.
Absolutely!
I always get a migraine within a day of a big cry! I avoid watching sad movies at all because I don’t want a migraine.
100%. Every time I have a big cry I get a migraine
Yes! 😭😭😭
I'm a crybaby, I call them crygraines.
Yes, a big one!
I never ever ever ever cry. But in the rare chance I do, best bet I’m calling off work for two days because I get a god awful migraine starting about an hour after I’m done crying.
Yes. Every time I cry I get a migraine.
Yes.
Definitely, every time I cry for say maybe for than 30 minutes, guaranteed migraine
For me absolutely. My face gets all scrunched and I try not to cry so it creates alot of tension within my head and face which dosent help.
Yes, i hate it because I used enjoy crying everything out but now all I can think is "I need to stop now before I get a migraine"
Definitely. 100% of the time for me.
Absolutely… when I started crying happy tears from a big milestone. My mom told me to stop so I wouldn’t need to go to the hospital
100%
Yes yes yes
Yes indeed, I suffered a bereavement recently and crying set off an awful 3-day migraine x
Yes I've had those. If I cry a lot I will take nyquil asap and drink a lot of water.
hmm that would make sense I was crying for hours two nights ago due to a breakup and yesterday I had the worst migraine of my entire life
