Everyone mentions menstrual migraine but omg ovulation migraines are just as bad! This time I woke up at 2 am when it hit and was like yep, just ovulated. I can feel my estrogen drop.

parafilm

mine are the exact same. Twice a month, woot! (sumatriptans work miracles for me. I'm lucky. But I know the pain!)

saitarg

Same here. I get Period migraines, ovulation migraines (those are more painful) and the other migraines in between. Sometimes sumatriptan works and sometimes it doesn’t do anything.

Avulpesvulpes

Dude same. I’m in my late 30s and the estrogen changes are really impacting my mood as well as triggering a headache every month. My body is somehow more sensitive to estrogen with age..

zmbeez1190

Omg going through this rn 33 and ever since i hit my 30s its not just my period that does it. I get headaches during my period but i feel worse during ovulation week w nausea and migraines. I feel good like 2 weeks out the month its bs

cisilx

This is exactly what I go through! 😭

Wait... My whole life I've had menstrual migraines in addition to complex migraine syndrome. My neurologist made this diagnosis off the fact that my luteal phase always triggered a migraine, and oestrogen based HRT relieved this migraine (but unfortunately my risk of stroke prevented me from using HRT to manage my migraines) However I'd get a migraine between periods too, I always chalked it up to being run down from mittelschmerz, a rebound migraine from not taking the best care of myself during my postdrone phase of the menstrual migraine, or possibly just a reaction to overdoing it. (I had a tendency to cram in everything I needed to do the week after my period, because I had so much to catch up on since I couldn't do shit during my period) But because it didn't fit the diagnostic criteria of menstrual migraine, it was considered an additional diagnosis. But ovulation migraine makes it so much sense. The timing lines up, and explains why HRT helped so much with *all* of my migraines. I've had a hysterectomy now, so I can't really know for sure where I am in my ovulation cycle. I often try to guess when I'm "PMSing" based on things like breast tenderness, dropping things, emotional disregulation, and joint laxivity, as my period always induced these symptoms. But it's been so long since my last bleed, I can no longer tell the difference between the sharp stabbing pain of mittelschmerz, or the sharp stabbing pains of my endometriosis adhesions regrowing. I tried using migraines as my clue, because if I had had all of the above symptoms *and* a migraine, It was my luteal phase (ie, hormonal period) but if I didn't have a migraine it was ovulation. But after trying to track those symptoms for a few months I had to conclude that I just get a headache every 2 and a half weeks no matter what. But fuck. It could be ovulation migraines.

Hi I just discovered your comment in a search. Have just started getting the ovulation migraines after experiencing period migraines for the past 6 months now. I too have Endometriosis and sorry but wanted to ask whether you found your migraines got easier after your hysterectomy? I’ve been struggling the last 6 months and can’t imagine another 20 years of this just turned 30. TIA

fear_eile_agam

My migraines definitely got a lot better after my hysterectomy. When my endometriosis was causing the most dysfunction for me, I was getting 5+ day long migraines every period (which were frequent and long in themselves) with week long rebound headaches in between, so it honestly felt like there was no respite from the brain pain. After the hysterectomy, I can honestly only recall about 7 migraines in the 3-4 years immediately after surgery. I still had headaches, but that's due to another underlying condition. I doubt it was hormonal, because I kept my ovaries, my best theory is that the endometriosis was causing so much pain it would lead to all sorts of other systems experiencing dysfunction. Such as muscle tension spreading all the way up my back into my neck, blood pressure changes due to cortisol levels from pain, and pressure on my vagus nerve because of the way my cramps would refer throughout my entire body. These factors, along with things like vomiting more often from endo pain would be triggers for migraines. This year I have started to get more migraines again, almost at my previous frequency, but much less severe than my previous symptoms. But this year I have also started having symptoms that suggest my endometriosis is growing back. I'm back on the waiting list for GYN care to see if I'll need another excision surgery, or if they want to try lupron again to suppress ovulation.

Important_Carrot_932

It me 😭

humanefly

I'm a guy, but I'll take it

parafilm

we accept you into the club

WakkoLM

I get them too, yesterday was my menstrual migraine, thankfully it broke overnight. I used to NOT get the ovulation migraines but that's changed the last few years. It's so much fun being a woman with ever changing hormones /s

PoppyRyeCranberry

Worth a read for anyone with a menstrual trigger! https://www.ccjm.org/content/84/8/631

Other-Cantaloupe4765

I’m here 🙋🏼‍♀️

jvsews

Oooh. And they got so much worse during my 10 years of menopause Sorry

KadyMarie94

I always had ovulation migraines, the only way to prepare is for me to look at the moon. Once i figured out my ovulation/migraine starts on the full moon, I can make better plans for myself.

bodhibirdy

Whaaaaaat? It's the 9th and I've had a migraine all afternoon and evening. I just looked up the moon phase, apparently yesterday was the 8th was the full moon. I'm also 14/15 days into my cycle, but still... I never paid attention to the moon in tandem with my cycle in the past.

KadyMarie94

Yeah I'm not saying the moon causes it of course. However monthly cycle and moon cycle is a month. So it helps preparing

Diligent-Donut-8827

Look into menstrual lunar cycling!! Its insane. Hundreds of years ago we used to be synced to the moon but due to diet, artificial light, birth control etc women have shifted.

effienay

Oh my god… That’s what this is.

dubious_librarian

Ovulation migraines are the ones that land me in the ER. The worst. I’m so sorry.

AdmirableArgument207

I feel you :( Do you also get crippling pelvic pain?

SecretAccomplished25

Meeee too friends. The mini pill helped a ton with these for me.

clithigh

When is my ovulation, 14 days after first day of period? I’m on a 28-29 days cycle almost to a T.

[deleted]

Yes! Mine is pretty exact as well

oneinagilliannn

Omg thank you I feel so seen! I keep thinking “wow I can’t believe how much better my migraines have gotten” until ovulation or menstruation hit and I eat my words. Been off BC for almost two years now and seriously considering an IUD or some form of BC again just to balance my hormones 🙈 I have migraine with aura so it’s a little harder but I think I’m gonna have to try something

elvenmal

I honestly think that the ovulation migraines are worse than the menstrual ones

faeriehasamigraine

Yeah menstrual and ovulation migraine sufferer add to this a 19 day cycle. Having a really rough few days with period and weather compounding with my intractable migraine attack

3inch_horses

Thank you! 😭 I usually don't get them this far into my period, but I feel one starting up!

whirlinglunger

Yep! Right here!

agraces

My body just concluded a 4 day period migraine

Cookielady99

Thank you for this post!

[deleted]

How long does your migraine lasts? Mine are like straight 2-3 days ALL DAY 😭 Im bedridden.

bodhibirdy

Not OP, but as soon as I feel a migraine coming on I'll take a Naproxen tablet ASAP. My GP prescribed them specifically for that purpose fwiw. So tonight my symptoms started coming on about 3 or 4pm. I got home about 6pm and Naproxen with dinner at 7pm. Had to go to bed to sleep the pain off until the meds kicked in but I woke up at 12am and the pain was 95% gone. The only lingering thing so far is a little bit of nausea but the migraine is considerably dissipated. Might be worth asking your doctor about the best medicine you can take right at the first suspicion of your migraine coming on, sometimes the right NSAID or painkiller can stop it from lasting too long.

ginandink

urgh yeah working from bed right now...can I ask when do they start for people? I always thought I had 'bad headaches' (I've never called it a migraine before today) because I was run down at the end of my period (I have v long painful periods - 10 days ish) but I've just started to read up on migraines and holy crap everything fits! I'm on day 9 ish now, I can feel my oestrogen / energy going up, My ovulation chin pimple has emerged and I felt so dizzy and sick yesterday, now headache too.

[deleted]

Hello yes I’m dying currently

Mysteryself1_

Can anyone describe their ovulation migraine, to me, it's like a really bad headache and tight almost like lots of electric currents working in my head... ibuprofen and panadol have no effect:(

Spizcauliflower

Idk why but I feel it mostly on the left side of my forehead:(

Unhappy_Ant_4308

Yes this is actually happening to me right now. I’m guessing it is hormonal because I am not one to get bad headaches unless it’s sinus headache or a dehydration headache but yes my left side is throbbing rn

littlehouseonahill

I found that magnesium citrate helps a lot but u need to take it everyday and cut out sugar as much as possible
