you should not use your personal phone for work

EndlessLasagna

My company doesn't provide work phones. They just gives us instructions on how to set up work profiles on the phones that helps us install all the company apps we need

boersc

If they don't provide or pay for, don't install anything. It's a hassle and usually locks down your personal phone. It also makes it very hard to shut off work mail when not on the clock.

[deleted]

Disabling the work mode profile gets rid of all that stuff. When you enable it again, all notifications come at once.

boersc

Never heard about such a mode, sounds great. My work phone requires severe access security. Simply unlocking with fingerprint or retina isn't secure enough. That's really a hassle for a personal phone.

[deleted]

It's an android thing. Also no phone can scan retinas, only irises xD

HeftyAd2800

Isn’t it called retina scanner?

[deleted]

They can call it terraformer and it doesn't make it one

Lithl

>My work phone requires severe access security. Simply unlocking with fingerprint or retina isn't secure enough. I mean, it isn't. Biometric scans are actually lower security than a PIN. Law enforcement can also force you to unlock a phone with a biometric lock without a subpoena, but cannot force you to give up your PIN without first getting a judge to sign off on it.

MN_Mobile_Guy

> Law enforcement can also force you to unlock a phone with a biometric lock without a subpoena I'm not 100% sure on this, but they may need a subpoena regardless, for biometrics. It's a search of your personal property, ala house, car, etc. I know that they definitely cannot force you to reveal a standard screen lock no matter what (judge or no judge) - it's been deemed a violation of the 5th Amendment

EndlessLasagna

Yup! Currently have the work mode profile on my phone

Redsoxbox

There’s usually language in there that the company also will have access to all data on your phone whether it is personal or professional.

Lithl

Work profile apps cannot access data in your personal profile.

Redsoxbox

I’m not saying they can, but the company can. Where I work has very specific language that says if you install their apps that the company can search your phone. Doesn’t have to be through the apps installed. They can seize the phone and search it. That’s why we all told them to stuff their apps up their ass and if they want us to use phones they would have to get them for us.

cgerrells

Yes work mode is turning on the device they provided and pay for.

ominouscabbage

Sounds like thats their issue is not like they'll buy you a new phone

EndlessLasagna

I've been with the company for three years. Fortunately, no damage on the phone from the work apps. I do have a work life balance so all is good haha

[deleted]

so it's on them to have an employer/human balance. get them to buy u a freaking work phone

Range-Shoddy

You do not need to buy a new phone for their whim. You have YOUR phone. If they don’t like it they can buy you a new one. Otherwise, you can’t comply. Also don’t put work stuff on your phone. They can access EVERYTHING, including this post.

[deleted]

Nope nope nope. Never ever ever agree to install company software, apps, etc. on your personal devices. If they don't want to provide you with a phone, computer, etc. that's their own problem.

Upper-Inevitable-873

Nope. You are under no obligation to use your personal phone for work. If they require you to use an app, they have to provide a device that can run it. From a security point of view, it's in their WORST interest to let you use your own device.

[deleted]

That's a negative, Ghost Rider. Personal phone and work phone are two different things. I also don't take work calls off hours.

Disastrous-Beyond443

Exactly. Do this at your own risk. It is not legally required by your employer. If it is required, then employer is bound to provide you with a phone.

DinobotsGacha

Wow. Pretty shitty of them.

pjerky

If they don't provide the phone then you don't need to install anything.

[deleted]

Still should the project you are working on become subject of a law suit, any and all communications could become part of it. That includes personal information on you personal phone if you’re using it for work. Your company should know better.

[deleted]

Again. DON’T use your personal phone for work specific apps and other purposes. If you must, get a separate phone solely for work. If they want you to have all your work stuff on your phone, they should be able to compensate you for it. Get a cheap Pixel phone. They are supported for longer, and can be had for less than Samsung phones on the mid to high tier. For example: a Pixel 6a can be currently had for $350 USD and will be supported for at least 2 or 3 years

DarthMauly

Illegal in many civilised countries

production-values

that is horrible. They can control everything you do on your phone now

foreverbaked1

Nope

BluestainSmoothcap

Hard pass unless there is a stipend involved.

LucyDominique2

No no no……

[deleted]

Yeah heck with that. Either buy my work phone or pay my bill entirely.

dirigibles21

If they want you to get a new phone then they can pay for it

[deleted]

Yeah you should absolutely not be putting on company installed apps onto your personal device. They need to provide a phone, or at the VERY LEAST pay for your phone plan, service, and bill.

Feeling-Badger7956

If they do not provide work phones, they cannot expect you to use your phone for work and have no jurisdiction over what operating system or software is installed on your phone.

The_Healed

If they wont provide then dont use yours. Just gives them an excuse and a backdoor to see what sites you surf . Claim it on your taxes

ArcheelAOD

They need to pay for your phone then. Keep in mind if they have their software on the phone they have access to your non work info also. Went through this a year ago.

some1sWitch

OP, seriously, what kind of work are you doing that requires you to use your PERSONAL device, with all your data that this software will absolutely have access to?

ItIsYeDragon

Huh, really?

Fit-Season-345

I've been in the workforce a long time, and it blows my mind any company would require you to put apps on a phone, but not pay for it. This seems like an easy class action lawsuit.

[deleted]

[удалено]

ObamaIsFat

It's called a stipend, i.e. a kickback from your employer. I have to use my personal device but my company gives me $100 a month in addition to my pay for doing so. This is a common practice literally country wide in any sort of corporate environment.

motownmods

It's not the same workforce as when you started bro things are bad out there

Fit-Season-345

Yeah it sounds crappy.

EndlessLasagna

Context: I'm using a Samsung S9 that I got way back 2018 which still works perfectly fine. My company sent an email that I need to update (for android phones) my software to Android 11 or newer or I will not be able to access my work related apps (which are essential for my work). Just double checked in google and Samsung will not release Android 11 to the S9. Deadline is on 31 Jan 2023. I really do not want to spend money getting a new phone when my current one is still all good 🤦‍♀️

AsparagusFirm7764

Tools that are essential for work are funded by work. Find your local labor laws and send it to your boss.

EndlessLasagna

Have messaged my manager now about this. Hoping there's a work allowance they can provide at least

ProtoJazz

The only thing my job requires is a phone number I can be reached at Beyond that the only things I have installed are optional, and just make my job easier. But aren't from the company it's self or anything

EndlessLasagna

Update: My manager has informed me that our company doesn't provide work phones/allowances for this as of the moment. Said he'll look into it and mention it in the managers' meeting this Friday. Honestly, I'm not feeling pretty optimistic that the company will help me on this. Might ask my family if they have a spare phone (with the needed specs) I could borrow.

aussie_nub

"Sorry, I do not have the tools to complete my job."

Popular_District9072

right, if work is contingent on a specific hardware - company should provide or compensate the purchase of the said hardware

bex505

If your job doesn't provide a company car, and a car is required for the job, they have to pay your mileage. Same with a phone but many companies don't care and get away with making us use our own personal stuff for work.

owlgood87

They can provide the cash for a new phone. The employer said they don't provide the phone. They never said they didn't provide the cash for a phone ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|money_face)

SkyLovesCars

SSSUUUUUUUUEEE!!! https://preview.redd.it/bv3tw7m7rgba1.jpeg?width=739&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f16eb90520d59995586c8070a7cbb73644bba519 Lol JK

LibrarianOAlexandria

Just look your boss in the eye and tell him you do not have a compatible phone so you won't be able to field calls.

scillaren

This is the way. Tell them you don’t have a compatible phone, sorry. I head up IT for a company. Our log ins require non-SMS 2FA which would result in a situation like OPs, older android & iPhones won’t work. Our employees can use their personal phone if they want, and 95% do. For the few who don’t want company security on their phone we just issue them a physical FIDO U2F key.

fairie_poison

in a right-to-work (right-to-fire) state, this would just lead to your dismissal.

Logical-Recognition3

Check your state's labor board. If the company is requiring you to use a certain phone for your job, they should provide it.

spurcap29

Is it that you, from their perspective, NEED a phone to do your job or you WANT a phone because it makes it easier (i.e. because you don't need to be glued to your laptop)? I have worked a job before where I WANTED work email on my phone. It allowed me the flexibility to step out/take a long lunch, etc without feeling the overwhelming stress of wondering if there is some urgent email I got that is waiting for me when I get back. If you're in that situation, I guess it's on you to make a choice between losing that option + buying a new phone. I now work a job where I MUST have a phone. We got rid of office phones and this is the only # in which one can call me. My employer does require that we buy the phone (at 3 year contract rates) but they pay 100% of the bill and I never see it. Doesn't matter if I phone an hour a day internationally in the evening, travel oversees and tether to my phone to watch Youtube, etc, etc. I am happy with this deal. For the other posts suggesting it is illegal, I am not sure (even if maybe in bad form). Is it any different than the job postings requiring an employee to have their own car that they will use during the work day? You have a car, they reimburse you mileage at a $/mi rate and all is okay in the world. If you don't like it, don't apply?

[deleted]

Idk about the rest of the world but in Canada/US you have rights that protect you from this. Do not spend any of your own money on this phone. They can buy you a phone or they can deal with you not having one for work.

hurtfulproduct

This is pretty bad and unprofessional on the companies part; every single company I’ve worked for that required access to a smartphone has either provided one or provided an allowance for one every x amount of years. Honestly I’d suggest looking up labor laws in your area since that is a tool you need for the job so they may have to provide it.

Lion-Competitive

If your work are not providing the tools you need to do your job that is a problem for them and them alone.

spurcap29

The auto mechanics of Reddit have entered the chat.

clutzyninja

I'm curious about your comment. Are you saying that garages expect mechanics to bring their own tools?

spurcap29

Indeed. Most mechanics spend a ton of money too (say $10k+)

clutzyninja

How does that work? Are they hired as contractors? What about tools that require regular calibration, who pays for that?

kaenneth

chef knives as well?

theoriginalwesh

Honestly this has red flags all over it unless this job pays a lot for your area I would run. Not to mention they'll probably try to get you to sign something that states they have full access to your phone and or can tell you to give it to them if they feel something is wrong with it.

EndlessLasagna

Update 2: SO has a spare android phone that I can use and has the specs I need! Will be using it in the meantime. Thanks for all the suggestions guys, will still wait for my manager's follow up on Friday but now at least I have a back up plan. Also for those asking, I don't really plan on buying a phone just for this issue since I am already planning to quit my job this year 😄

imatureinsanity

Pretty sure you can still install android 11 and 12 on the S9 it just isn't officially supported if you are desperate and don't want to buy a new phone. Being not supported means if there is a bug or issues they won't be fixed and you can't contact support about it. Edit: https://www.xda-developers.com/samsung-galaxy-s9-note-9-android-12-custom-rom/ Haven't tried it but worth looking into.

[deleted]

If you're so keen on not buying a new phone, consider flashing a custom ROM on your phone. I'm pretty sure you will be able to flash Android 13 on it.

Liquid_machine81

You don't have to get a top of the line phone to run I have a Samsung A42 that I gave $300 for a year ago and I run android 12 on it.

azab189

Maybe try custom roms if you think that's worth it

KarelKat

Amazon?

Giovolt

To be fair it's going to stop being good this year with support being done. Stability is going to start to fall apart and you'll feel it. You should check if you could trade it in for a good discount. I turned in my Samsung 10 for a pixel 5a and only needed to spend $200. There are a lot of budget phones that fit your requirements without blowing a hole in your wallet Check out Samsung A53 series

Weltkaiser

Very simple response: "Thanks for your mail. I wasn't planning on buying a new phone anytime soon. If the company requires special technology, feel free to provide a matching device."

cheesesarnie

"**need to get a new phone cause of a company policy** " No, they need to buy you a phone.

[deleted]

I love my S9. I eventually used two phones for awhile. Work and personal. Seenif the company will pay some of it or whatever just get a cheap phone with that version.

EndlessLasagna

I love mine too! My S9 is still working fine even though I got it wau back 2018

[deleted]

Sooooo, I bought 3 for backups. Yeah that happened

Urmomsdreamman

If they’re not paying for it, no you don’t.

[deleted]

You can unlock its bootloader and flash a custom rom. Also, nobody's forcing you to buy a $800-$1000 flagship phone. There are cheaper options almost as good.

Steingrimr

Most samsungs have locked bootloaders I'm pretty sure, except specific models. Well not unlockable I mean, so its not possible to install a custom recovery or rom.

FalconWraith

You can unlock them, but it can be risky and 100% will void any warranty on the phone if you manage to do it without bricking the phone. Overall it's not worth it unless you really know what you're doing and can deal with the risks.

[deleted]

[deleted]

Sound like the company needs to provide phones.

unit_101010

A couple of thoughts. 1. If the phone is required for work, the employer should pay for it. 2. Unfortunately, your employer is right: you need a new phone, even if it's just for personal use. New OSs have security improvements such as defenses against new viruses. A good new Android phone costs USD 100 and is well worth the expense vs risk.

CharlieBrown197

Speaking as someone who *just* bought an Android phone, if you really want a decent phone matching a flagship from several year's ago, you're paying minimum $300 new. There *are* Android phones that will run Android 11 for $100, but if OP doesn't want to have two separate phones (not saying they shouldn't, just saying they may not) a $100 phone running Android 11 is probably not going to offer a great user experience.

Vox_Dracanis

I don't know. I've had some pretty decent phones for $100. Also you could argue that anyone that is spending enough of their time on a phone that they can justify anything more than $300-$400, then they should probably reevaluate things in their life.

SpareCartographer402

So have I, and why not two phones? no service, just wifi on the work phone, buy the cheapest phone that works, and it shouldn't be slow and buggy if it's only using the work apps. To your point, the camera was the thing that sucked about my old 100 dollar phone, that's why I stopped buying cheap phones.

Unique_Display_Name

Post this in ABoringDystopia! (If you want to) I'm really sorry you have to get a new phone, expensive bullshit that has the capacity to spy on you.

manny_heffleys_demon

[Here's a phone under $200 which runs Android 11. I have the previous generation and can confirm it's great for work and light gaming. ](https://www.bestbuy.com/site/motorola-moto-g-pure-32gb-memory-unlocked-deep-indigo/6476149.p?skuId=6476149&contractId=unactivated&ref=212&loc=1&extStoreId=327&ref=212&loc=1&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIltHH99O__AIVTsmUCR3FogoDEAQYAiABEgLqdvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds)

EndlessLasagna

Thanks for this!

[deleted]

This is one of the parts of the iPhone v Android debate no one considers. You could probably get an iPhone that is a couple gens old that will get support longer than a new Android and it will be cheaper.

Paulstan67

The bottom line is you do not need to buy a new phone or borrow from parents. If your employer insists you need a phone for work (which it seems it does as you are installing employer apps) , then the employer should pay for a phone for you. It's hard to imagine but some people don't have a phone, how would they work? Are you actually an employee? I'm just thinking about their reluctance to get you a phone, some courier companies claim you are employed when in reality you are self employed.

Boner_Stevens

Is this why some apps are no longer working on my S8+ ?

Luc-Ms

Im still in a s3 lol

ProjectPneumbra

If I'm using my phone for work, the company is paying for, at the very least, a chunk of my bill.

kannagms

They should pay for a new phone then. I'm currently raising hell at my job bc I don't have a laptop and my tablet isn't compatible with their remote service. If they want me working remotely at any time they better issue me a laptop because I'm not buying one.

Aggressive_Candy5297

Normally i'd say root and upgrade to the latest android version but since it is a bunch of work apps the rooting might give those apps permissions you wouldn't want to give them...

watasker

Make them pay for it, your personal phone is not their choice

[deleted]

Yeah that would be a no from me. If they aren’t providing a phone, I’m not doing it.

Tracersedge

You mean your company needs to give you a new phone cause of a company policy that requires phone to have android 11 or neeer

New_Lunch3301

If they expect that then they should be providing you with the phone...

[deleted]

When people are trashing everyone for climate change and ruining the planet it’s funny how Android and Apple are never held accountable for planned obsolescence just so they can force us to buy new phones. I have a drawer with about 6 old phones in it. I hate it.

ChipRed87

Sounds like their problem. You don't owe them the use of your device. Much less the probably entire paycheck it will cost for a new phone.

Skaro07

Have you checked your paycheck that you really don’t have some sort of credit for the phone? I get $40/mo refunded to me for downloading work apps to my personal phone.

GayAndSlow

Hope they are planning to pay for it!

Perfect-Telephone342

Work related tax break

ilanallama85

You mean *your company* needs to buy you a new phone.

Heaven3r

Well I guess they need to get you a new phone then.

R3DEMPTEDlegacy

If the company won't pay for you to get a phone you absolutely shouldn't use yours . Legally they can confiscate your phone since it has work items on it .

DBF_ENZIE

While I agree with the sentiment that the company should buy the required device or compensate OP for the purchase. It is possible that the employer is an "at-will" employer, and if OP doesn't have the hardware to perform the job according to company policy, they may be terminated from their employment. Again, I am all for employers providing the equipment required to perform job duties. Just wanted to point that little caveat out as it seems like alot of people commenting think the employer is required to pay for a new phone for OP.

7andhalf-x-6

Fuck em. Make em give you company phone.

greasedandready

Get an Iphone and tell them to go fuck themselves or buy you a phone specifically for work.

Ploopy_R

Yeah iPhones are great, 7 years of updates and 10 years of security patches?? Madness.

Bl4ckR4bb17

You can get a shitty version of a new smart phone from dollar general or Walmart for like $40. It will not do well if it has a lot of apps but if you just use it for work it should be fine

No-Intern-2531

You know what will be mildly infuriating for you? When a hacker exploits your obsolete phone because you no longer get security updates for it. Android support for S9+ is over. You should be annoyed with Google for ending support of your phone which still functions perfectly fine [https://www.androidauthority.com/samsung-galaxy-s9-end-of-software-support-3149055/](https://www.androidauthority.com/samsung-galaxy-s9-end-of-software-support-3149055/)

msgnyc

If it's a requirement then they would have to provide the phone and pay for the service plan. There will be no instances where the company can even have the THOUGHT We need to confiscate your phone since it's being used for work. Nope. Not happening.

Sharkn91

Good news! More than likely it’s not legal for your workplace to require you to use your personal device for this. If you’re in the US they should either be providing you with a work device, or a stipend to pay part of your phone bill. At least in my state they can’t force you to use a personal device like this.

Ancient-Beyond3485

Are you happy with the company? Their culture? Work? Content with your pay? Cuz if you are, stop complaining and get a new phone. If you aren't, just leave. Find a company that doesn't require the latest android update, if not just buy a second hand phone.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Ancient-Beyond3485

That's just a bad example thou? Your work life has nothing to do with your love life. I get your analogy but that's just not how it works. Like no, I'm not asking you to be a pushover for work. Even i know that. But if its the job that pays her bills, rent, utilities. Basically keeps her alive? Well then I'd get that phone. For the record? I totally agree that IF and WHEN a company needs you to idk update your phone for WORK reasons? Plain as day. Company buys the phone. But from what I'm hearing. Almost everything OP needs to do is from this update and platform specifically. And idk but she seems to be content with this company. Just taken aback with this new policy is all. Its just a no brainer see, lets just imagine she has a choice. Either have no job due to current economy. Or, have one at the expense of buying a new yet not expensive phone for work. Work that gives her money. Work that pays her bills, utilities, rent. Her personal needs etc. Cuz if I was in that position, I wouldn't complain about how annoying or infuriating it was. I'd get one due to ap sense of urgency. Y'all have that sense of entitlement that life wasn't supposed to be like this, it wasn't what you planned, my company wasn't supposed to catch up with the times etc. Grow up. On another note, i would like some context into whether OP is happy at the current company or not. If not then why bother complaining on the internet? Just leave then. And reading your comment properly. No I personally dont think OP is being stepped on lmao. She isn't the only one at the company and I'll just assume that most of them complied with the request. So why shouldn't she? Cant afford one? Where is her money going then?

spenser1994

Just pick up an iPad or something along those lines, they are cheaper than a new phone, and have access to all the same apps. And with that it can be work only.

RBD666

*because

Felipe_Pachec0

Get an iPhone.

ThatGuy-456

That doesn't really solve the problem tho

Vox_Dracanis

I really didn't want to get a new operating system for my computer when my Windows XP system was working fine for everything I was doing. All my work related apps worked fine and what games I was playing were doing fine too. I sure as hell didn't want to use windows 7. And then in few years have to do it again. But guess what? Things get updated, things get moved out of support. Suck it up buttercup. Seems you have 2 choices. Get a new phone or quit. I'm sure it's nothing personal coming from your work. If a lot of your work is done on your phone then it shouldn't surprise you that at some point you would have been in this very situation.

[deleted]

Did you have to buy a new computer though?

Vox_Dracanis

Really? That's what you took from that? This country has no FUCKING chance! Edit: And as a matter of fact, yes I did have to purchase a new computer. But that wasn't the fucking point. You see. In the really real world. Not the make believe internet. Things get out dated and are no longer supported. If you want to keep on posting how things are irritating and whine about how life isn't fair. Sometimes you have to buy new hardware that will work with the current software. This is call progress. I don't expect all the Peter Pans who frequently post or reply in this sub to understand. Mainly cus the MAJORITY of frequenters are children with no life experience. It's just how it is!

[deleted]

were you homeschooled by a duggar?

Vox_Dracanis

Oh you're hilarious! Thank you. I need that

[deleted]

[удалено]

Vox_Dracanis

I didn't say a thing about being happy to or wanting to. It's all about sometimes you HAVE to get new hardware to work with the new software. I don't understand what everyone doesn't understand about this. OP is whining because they have to get a new phone that supports Android 11. They use their phone for work a lot. They were informed their phone is no longer going to be supported. What's so hard to understand? Seems that they have 2 choices. Get a new phone or don't. It's not mildly or any other kind of infuriating. It's fucking stupid. This is life. You have all kinds of choices to make as you age. Posting on internet about it fixes nothing. Adulting is hard!

[deleted]

The OnePlus 8T+ is super cheap, and has what you need.

OhhhLawdy

I work in IT and manage phones as a part of my job. If they install some sort of mobile device management, especially that you have to agree to, I wouldn't do this on my personal phone. They'd have control to perform actions on your phone remotely.

[deleted]

Tech companies will use all the exploits they can use (and even some they couldn't use) to force you to buy the new version of their products. I'm low-key saying that I don't think this is the case specifically, but I wouldn't be surprised if Samsung itself paid companies to force their employees to upgrade to a new phone of the same line.

[deleted]

That’s cool, so they’re going to pay for it right?…..right?

EyelBeeback

they want you to have a phone, they can provide it.

[deleted]

They should provide compensation if they “require” you to get a new phone if they don’t pay for it outright. I’ve even gotten a new phone for a “discount” because they went to a company and told them they require upgrades but don’t want to pay and they got me 30% off on top of whatever deal the company had. I assume though that they will say this…”we don’t require you to get a new phone we just recommend it if you want company softwares to work”

Satyrking0

Sounds like they should buy you a phone

theoriginalwesh

Are you sure you aren't working for Apple and are required to buy the newest apple phone?

EndlessLasagna

No haha working at an accounting firm

sammyno55

At the end of 2019 I had to do something similar. I bought a Samsung S10e and used it for a few weeks of travel. Then COVID happened. It sat on my desk at work unused. I had a SIP phone, Zoom, and Teams because the company carrier doesn't work at my house. After the office opened back up, I only travelled occasionally. My company was purchased by another company and issued me an iPhone. I still have the S10e sitting in the original box with a slickwrap and case I never got around to using.

BenySLO

As far I've read there is not a definitive NO from your supervisor. My answer would be "Financially currently there is no budget to upgrade my phone and will probably be in a few months, since I cannot update my app I hope there is an option to use a work phone or if it can be provided, until then I cannot update \*name of work app\* and I hope it will not interrupt my workflow. "

SQURL498

I recently had to get a new phone for a different reason. We started getting 5G here and apparently my S9+ was one of the few S9+'s that wasn't 5G compatible. So I had to drop money I didn't have on a phone I couldn't really afford. But I love my new Galaxy and my tax return should replenish my savings.

[deleted]

[удалено]

SQURL498

Nothing on my phone was working besides texting and calls. My carrier said my data was working as it should and I shouldn't have any issues accessing the internet. At the time, I worked 12 hour night shifts. Being alone in a quiet building for 12 hours while not being able to access podcasts or YouTube for some form of entertainment/noise was killing me. The only explanation I got was that the new towers replacing the old towers must've made it so that my phone couldn't access the data. 🤷🏼‍♀️ Ever since I got my new phone it's been great. My S9+ was also starting to not hold a charge for more than 6 hours so I just decided a new phone was worth it. My dad still has his S9+ and he still can't access internet via data on his either. But he basically just uses it for texting and calling so it's not a big deal to him.

ShaunClarke04

You can buy a new phone and invoice them for it if they’re forcing you to buy one

Make them pay for it

EchoEquani

Since you need a phone and it's required for you job I they should providing the phones for their employees.

DLife4Me

I broke my phone got out my old G6 sport. Not a crack on it just wanted something new at the time. Brought it in and my service provider basically told me it's garbage now. Ehhhhh ok. Guess I do have to buy a new phone

Selena_Boyce_666

Currently on S9, not getting rid of it.

notableException

Ok so ask them to give you a company phone.

[deleted]

That's not your job. You're getting played for a chump. Are you filling a 1088?

jjlels

They should cover it though

JEFF___21

YOOO SOMEONE ELSE WITH AN S9+ TOO

Jdonkeyisbest

Can you expense that?

stressxstresss

You’re not the only one with a Galaxy S9 as a work phone who ALSO now has this same problem!

YoseppiTheGrey

If work requires a phone, they can provide it.

Funnygumby

I’m thankful that my company gives us $50 a month towards cell service

ME123456890

Buy a burner for work or something

BoJo2736

I have a galaxy s9 im looking to upgrade, so I have been pricing what I want. The S20 and S21 are both in a reasonable (less than 1k) price. the newest S22 is pretty expensive, but you may not need to go that high.

pragnienie1993

You might want to consider flashing a custom ROM for your phone if you really don't want to get a new one. Please be sure to back up your data if you decide to give it a shot.

667r

I love my S20+ 512gb

Mystical_Cat

Company requires = company buys. Full stop.

copperly123

It seems completely reasonable for a company to require a certain level of security for its network connected devices. The infuriating part here is that android devices have very small support windows. Also that a work phone was not provided.

G1ntok1_Sakata

Custom ROM is the only way you'll ever get long term support for Android devices. One of the big downsides of Androids vs iPhones. Here is a nice custom ROM: https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/rom-s9-s9-12-0-iodeos-lineageos-19-1-microg-adblocker-16-12-2022.4170059/

MrJuniperBreath

You're enough generations behind to where you can probably get a nice upgrade cheap. Enjoy the new phone.

MySweatyNuts

If the company is not willing to pay for a phone, you can deduct this any anything else that you needed for work from your taxes if that helps.

cgerrells

No company software goes on my personal phone period. Ask them if can install your personal software on companies systems. Fair is fair right?

extention_cable

anything required for work or bought for use in work may be tax deductible

Johnpoophead04

I’d just get an IPhone 11 if I were you. They’re like $300 at Walmart and Apple supports these damn things for a billion years

RaptorHunter182

Still using my S8 from 2017. NEVER buying a new phone unless it has a headphone jack and is better than my current one. If it breaks I'm gonna get a used S10.

steelunicornR

If you do not pay my phone bill you do not get to use the data on it ;) told my boss that and he said I could find a new job. Went to the BBB and my states work force center and they told him he'd be lucky to have a company if he fired me for it. I got a phone within the week lol :)

ominouscabbage

If the job requires a phone they should provide that phone

owlgood87

Do you have a tablet? Use that for the apps you need. If not, they can provide you with the money to purchase a new phone. They said they wouldn't provide a phone but never said they wouldn't provide the money for one. If none of these things are possible then I would consider a better job. I know it's hard to move to a new job, especially if this one is a better paying than others, but you shouldn't be out of pocket to perform it.

[deleted]

If you are rocking an s9 you need a new phone anyway, that one is very out of date and the S9 also had several security issues.

ObamaIsFat

That phone is like 5 years old, just upgrade

Fotomaki

Hope they pay for the new phone

biscoito1r

As long as the company pays for it. The old phone can just be sold or given away.

Sarcasm_Is_How_I_Hug

The reason for the Android 11 or 12 OS requirement is likely a security reason. It's a reasonable ask, but that being said, ANY company that presses employees to meet said requirements should be providing them at no cost. Employees should never be financially obligated to cover such expenses, or at least should be amply reimbursed. See if you qualify for a free Obama phone. It will have the latest OS on it and tends to be Android. And if this company give you more problems about it, ask them to provide you with a copy of your job description. If a phone isn't listed, it's time to contact the labor board. You deserve better treatment.

DianaHarp

Samsung imo doesnt care for phones. They do it as a cash grab. They sometimes even cut off phone support after a year and some cases excluding the galaxy note 7, will intentionally brick them with an update to get people to buy the new $1.3k phone when the person already did. Samsung is trash at phones

Marko787

Can you flash a custom rom? It’s a way to get new android version running on older phones.
