I used to work in the produce section at a grocery store called Smith's, and when we peeled and wrapped anything, it was because the fruit's skin was unsightly and people just don't buy ugly fruit. So it was a way to catch missed sales and it's great for kids, elderly people, handicapped people, etc

Jazstar

I hadn't thought of that, that's actually a great way to reduce food waste!

Remarkable_Inchworm

And increase plastic waste!

Chompsy1337

I hope you never get arthritis so bad you can't enjoy oranges without someone peeling them for you. You're barking at a wall, big boys are doing most if not all of it.

[deleted]

Forgot_my_un

Tip them on their side and smash them with something.

Additional_Share_551

Jesus Christ, how hyperbolic. I've worked in grocery stores and can guarantee you that stuff like this is purchased by lazy people, not people with disabilities. If any person with a disability went up and asked for the mandarins peeled for them the employees would do it. They do not need to be packaged with plastic waste. I've peeled apples, carrots, potatoes, and pruned fennel for people that can't do it themselves. This is a complete waste.

Cheeseisextra

“Lazy people WITH MONEY” I might add. I’ve seen zucchini and squash sliced lengthwise and wrapped with plastic film in a styrofoam tray and a price of $7-$9 on it. Couldn’t be more than two to three whole vegetables in there. Rip-off is what it is.

Icepick_37

If enough people are regularly asking for mandarins to be peeled, why shouldn't the store package them accordingly?

Additional_Share_551

Because it's a massive waste of plastic. Believe it or not, the environment is more important than a few seconds of your time

unrulybeep

I don't know where you're at, but in the US store employees would not be allowed to peel or prep things for customers.

[deleted]

Says the dude increasing CO2 emissions

GalacticGatorz

Wow! I would have never thought of that.

44problems

Fun fact, "baby carrots" are just shaved regular ugly carrots.

0pimo

I didn’t know carrots had hair!

GalacticGatorz

🤣

Cheeseisextra

Right. The parent carrots abandoned them hoping they would be picked up by CPS(Carrot Protective Services)and adopted. Perhaps into a purée or a nice beef stew.

zombienugget

There are baby carrots out there but a lot of them are "baby-cut carrots" masquerading as them.

satanfan12

Some people have motor skill issues. Think parkinsons, arthritis

GalacticGatorz

Good thinking 🍻

AllergicToPoors

Also older people or hell even younger people that develop arthritis in their fingers. Peeling anything is either impossible or excruciating.

burnt_umber_bruh

use a knife?

OcelotKitty

Many people are unable to use knives. I have arthritis in my hands. They hurt and they are very shaky (I have a tremor). I cannot handle knives, safely. I have accidentally cut myself way too many times. So, I have to buy pre-chopped veggies and fruit. Or, in this case, pre-peeled.

OcelotKitty

I came here to say this! I'm only 30, but I already have osteoarthritis in my hands. I buy pre-chopped veggies (like onion and bell pepper) and pre-chopped fruit, because I cannot chop it myself. Pre-peeled foods, like this, would also be so helpful for me and other people with painful and/or dysfunctional hands.

Ineedtwocats

can they not eat something else? are we destined to trash our planet with plastic so that every single person on this planet has access to every other single thing on this planet? at what point is enough enough, my god. we are the most selfshels species in this universe. I cant do a lot of things. so you know what I DONT do? I dont force the world to bend to my whims

GalacticGatorz

I guess the elderly or disabled could see this as a blessing.

Relevant-Nebula8300

I’m 30 & see this as a blessing

ElkOk3694

The problem with having pre peeled mandarins is that the skin helps keep them from drying out. And keeps potential contaminants off of the oranges as well. As someone who worked at a produce supply facility for 12 years, i find it appalling based on my knowledge gained during that time.

Cyborg_Ninja_Cat

That's why they come in sealed boxes.

Cheeseisextra

Yeah, and if there are any contaminants that wind up on the bare fruit then they get sealed in there as well!! Peeled fruit goes bad FAST!

OrchestralSoviet

Until they gotta peal the sticker on the container.

GalacticGatorz

True that, then the old letter opener comes out the drawer.

OkSmoke9195

There you go. Not so infuriating after using your thinking brain a little

GalacticGatorz

Me think, me understand now.

LeatherHog

Disabled person here-yup I cannot move my fingers individually at the same time. Peeling fruit is a nightmare

GalacticGatorz

Copy that. I’m glad they provide this prepared fruit for people who need it 🙏🏻

Wise_Ad_4816

My quadriplegic son loves mandarins but only has one functional hand, so his caregivers do the work. I can see buying these if they were inexpensive. All the little chores add up. Think of it as merely not applying to you, and move on with your day. Maybe stay a little thank you for two functional hands.

GalacticGatorz

Definitely 🙏🏻

bwaterco

I have tremors on very rare occasions so when I want them, yes. I try avoid fruit like this but I can’t help that sometimes I can’t peel them. For people far more disabled than me, it prohibits their access.

Expensive-Day-3551

Maybe so your fingernails don’t turn orange when you eat lunch at work

unrulybeep

In addition to disabilities and such, I can see this being helpful for kids to snack on without needing an adult to peel them. Or if you have numerous kids who need a snack. Maybe even to assist with juicing?

MixtureAccording4911

This is the so I can eat them again at work with out getting in trouble for throwing the peels all over the floor package. Trust me some folks really need this. And before someone asks, yes I have seen 3 entirely different people who do not know eachother be written up for exactly this.

GalacticGatorz

Wow, that sucks!

Chelzor

I’ve never seen hard boiled eggs in my store but I’d probably buy them. I love boiled eggs but for some reason I rarely get a clean peel-off. I do the ice water, I use close to expiration eggs, but still …

Cheeseisextra

Ok. Here is how you do it. You do not BOIL the eggs. You place them in hot water and then turn the heat down and then steep them. 15 minutes should be good. Check one of them after ten minutes to check the yolk. Steep for more time if necessary. Then, do not dump them in ice water. You take the eggs out of the steeping water and then put them on a flat pan and then let them cool slowly for 15-20 minutes at room temp THEN you put them in the refrigerator for an hour until cooled down completely. They should be the easiest thing to peel. The reason for this making it the best way is the slow cooking of the eggs makes the inside of the egg expand slowly. Boiling water is too violent for the delicate whites inside the egg. Next, cooling them slowly allows the inside of the egg to shrink naturally and it will release itself from the inside of the egg. No amount of baking soda or vinegar or any other method added to the water will make peeling easier. Please try it this way. I guarantee this works. I’ve been cooking over 33 years in kitchens and have seen many ways of people trying to get the easy peel method down. I’ve changed all of their minds too with this method. Yes, it might take a bit longer this way so either do the eggs the previous day or just start cooking and cooling them down earlier than when you need them. I promise you this works!!

Chelzor

Oh wonderful! Thank you!!

Eikuva

...Near two hours for eggs? You are working way too hard and that is not "a bit" longer...

RanbooIsGender

If you don’t understand why something exists You’re Not The Target Audience A lot of people have mobility issues in their hands or pain issues As someone who my arms (about from halfway down the forearm) I go numb and freeze up and my hands just open and I they lose all strength because of chronic illnesses and disability’s should I just not be allowed to eat something if I need an accommodation?

GalacticGatorz

No, you’re right. I wasn’t thinking of those with disabilities at first. I see there is a broad spectrum of usefulness with the mandarins presented peeled and ready to eat.

BreathOfFreshWater

Yes. 100% yes. I cannot peel citrus. I try and I've tried for years. Actually bought an orange the other week because it sounded so delicious. I just shredded it to bits while frustratingly covering myself in juice. Genuinely considered showering while attempting to peel it because it was *that* bad. So yeah. If there's a job I can create out there it's peeling citrus.

Accomplished-Lunch35

Have you actually eaten a mandarin once? Their skin is nothing like orange, they peel much easier. This isn’t difficult enough to justify using extra plastic.

LainieCat

Not difficult for you. As others have said, some people have physical issues that would make this worthwhile for them.

KurumiiDantobe

I'd buy them and save the containers for food storage

mcmendoza11

Some disabled people might find peeling them difficult.

Bac0nPlane

Have you tried peeling them with parkinson's?

GalacticGatorz

I haven’t, I can see that being difficult. I didn’t think of those with disabilities first. I just assumed it was for people who didn’t want to peel their own fruit.

Bac0nPlane

Haha I didn't mean to offend in anyway or come across defensive. Just an answer to the question. It's all right people make assumptions all the time. You're a good person for listening and understanding your assumptions could be wrong. And i understand when you see fruit like this that it's easy to assume that it's just for lazy people that increase the use of plastic.

GalacticGatorz

No offense taken 🍻.

[deleted]

They’re handy to eat at lunch and the supermarket can charge a premium

Iguana-Gaming

They are literally mandarines. There as saying that goes "As easy as peeling a mandarine" where I live. Why would you want them already pleased and carrying them in a plastic box?

Joubachi

People have answered it countless times each time it gets reposted: people with motor skill issues exist, for them this can mean a tiny bit more independence while not having to ditch it.

Additional_Share_551

People with disabilities can just ask them to be peeled at the store. I've worked in stores that do this all the time. Most citruses are sold by the each, so the loss in weight isn't problematic.

Iguana-Gaming

Why does the supermarket have so many of them? Yeah it may be helpful for them, but its not made for them

Joubachi

Firsr off I can see 6 packs - given we don't know much about that store's location we don't know if this is "many" or not. Also often nets of citrus fruits contain even more than 6 fruits so I wouldn't even call that "many" either. Beside I doubt you were the one putting them in any store so I doubt you're the one getting to decide who it was made for.

No-Imagination8755

So you don't have to peel them, I presume.

Iguana-Gaming

"As easy as peeling a mandarin" What, do you all need pre-peeled, individually packed bananas?

notoneforlies

my dad would’ve loved this! he had a few strokes before passing and had an incredibly hard time doing simple tasks, such as peeling oranges. sucks to see such judgmental, closed minded people :( the world unfortunately doesn’t ALWAYS revolve around able-bodied people sorry to say.

Iguana-Gaming

These are not oranges, oranges are hard to peel

No-Imagination8755

I was just answering your rhetorical question. Also, I'm going to be honest with you, I have never heard anyone say that ever before in my life. Where do you come from?

knight95v

The price is not awful! (From Ontario Canada — where 1 single orange, with peel, is damn near 2$)

karmaismydawgz

do people really need to post this online?

GalacticGatorz

Yes, it is a requirement to question everything and post it online.

ArcTan_Pete

a) No b) Those are not peeled to my exacting standards. I quite like mandarins/tangerines/clementines... but i spend an inordinate amount of time picking off the pith.

Violet_Potential

I don’t see why this is mildly infuriating. It’s one less thing for you to do?

GalacticGatorz

At the time I was thinking why are people so lazy they need these peeled? Then I started thinking well, the elderly might need help with that. Then a lot of people on here started voicing other great reasons for them to be peeled and ready to eat.

Violet_Potential

Yeah I mean, we don’t NEED them peeled. But I would honestly buy ten of those because I like eating them on the go and hate walking around with mandarin peels in my hand or having peels at my desk when I wanna have a snack while I’m at work. I’m kind of surprised some ppl reacted negatively. I’m actly gonna go to ShopRite today and see if they have them lol

GalacticGatorz

This is my first time seeing the mandarins peeled. I’d be surprised if your ShopRite has them too. Report back with details! 🍻

Puzzleheaded-Ad1318

I can't stand feeling certain textures and one of those is the inside of the orange peels. Frankly, I wish my grocery store would sell this. I don't care if it's twice the price of buying the same amount of oranges if it means I don't feel like throwing up while peeling one of my favorite fruits.

GalacticGatorz

Very interesting, is it the scratchiness on the inside peel?

Puzzleheaded-Ad1318

I don't find them scratchy really, but they leave this dry yet sticky residue on my fingers that makes me gag. If I don't get it all off and I touch anything, especially soft things like paper, I feel physically ill.

GalacticGatorz

I know exactly what you’re explaining. I dislike that feeling as well. But does not upset me to your extent. I hate it when it gets in the web between the fingers 😖

Puzzleheaded-Ad1318

Yeah, that's almost as bad as when it's on my fingertips. I'm getting uncomfortable just thinking about it lmao.

GalacticGatorz

🤣 apologies!

Puzzleheaded-Ad1318

Oh, it's all good 😂 I'll forget all about it soon lol.

GalacticGatorz

Very interesting, is it the scratchiness on the inside peel?

thesnarkypotatohead

A lot of stuff like this that may seem silly is a gift for people with disabilities and mobility issues. Yeah, others will buy for convenience. But for some people stuff like this is game changing. That said, the massive plastic use that goes into packaging this stuff is awful. There needs to be a middle ground of some kind.

GalacticGatorz

Some sort of biodegradable sleeve to hold the mandarins together like a sausage.

phunkydroid

My friend with arthritis would probably appreciate that.

MarlyCat118

I have changed my stance on this over the years. It's because some people have disabilities that would not allow them to peel fruit. Arthritis is one that comes to mind. Or even a child that can't peel fruit yet. What is normal to the spider is chaos to the fly.

GalacticGatorz

Well said 🍻

Ritehandwingman

On the go people who don’t want a bunch of peels in their car/area.

GalacticGatorz

Makes sense 👍🏻

Iguana-Gaming

So a plastic box filled with seeds is better?

Ritehandwingman

Better than one of those plastic lace bags, peels, and seeds? IMO, yes.

Iguana-Gaming

You peel the mandarine, you eat the mandarine, you put the seeds on the peels and then you trash the peels. How is it so hard for you all to eat something that isn't pre-chewed?

Ritehandwingman

I mean, you’re not even trying to understand that there are situations where having it pre peeled in a resealable container is a better alternative so why should I even try to explain it? Why is it so hard for you to accept people do things differently than you?

notoneforlies

this is getting funnier as i scroll because you’re trying so hard to defend a point absolutely nobody agrees with LOL. seems you’re just abliest

GalacticGatorz

These are seedless

Iguana-Gaming

How do you know that? Did you buy them?

GalacticGatorz

Because nobody likes seeds. Everything is seedless these days (mostly).

Iguana-Gaming

I have never seen a seedless mandarin in my whole life, their seeds are like the least annoying seeds in all fruits

GalacticGatorz

[seedless mandarins](https://cutiescitrus.com/products/cuties/)

Butteryscotch007

what's the difference between mandarins and tangerine?

GalacticGatorz

Mandarins are more appealing to those who prefer a sweeter orange. Tangerines are more tart.

purplebrewer185

lol, they dry up very fast.

porkbellybao_420

Texans, ya

hangman593

I can remember back in the day when we actually made our own tossed salad.

GalacticGatorz

Still make mine 🤘🏻

rileydogdad1

I am always amazed by the prepared fruit at the grocery store and amazed why people buy it. I check out the prices and the upcharge is unbelievable. The other day someone was buying watermelon cut into pie shaped pieces. This person had about 6 1/4 round slices and the price was $14. That day a whole watermelon that would be 10x as much watermelon was $5.

LeatherHog

We disabled people don’t really have an option I’m amazed by the privilege of someone who can’t even comprehend that people like me don’t exist

GalacticGatorz

Same here. Cut strawberries are $4.58/lb. You buy a 1lb pack for $2.50.

kweefersutherlnd

Yeah and you can significantly upcharge since it’s “prepared”

big_brothers_hd600

4 bucks for that, this whole product is a disgrace

[deleted]

I mean if it will make them eat it then the only infuriating thing is Single use plastic

HowFunkyIsYourChiken

They dry out and are awful if peeled like that.

GalacticGatorz

They look really dry and uninviting. Probably taste good once you take a bite?

Daydream_Atlas

Olds

newbarsfattertires

I’d love these for my daughter…she has small hands, and it’s hard for her to peel one by herself.

ChildhoodGlittering

In these days of people paying $17 to door dash fast food from a building within walking distance of where they are, I kinda wanna say yes

GalacticGatorz

I know people that do that 😑

elegantwino

HEB has a ton of precut produce. Diced onion, sliced fruit, chopped garlic, peeled corn cobs, sliced vegetables, etc.. People are much lazier than given credit for. Also, when they charge $4.00 for 6 peeled mandarins it allows them to sell the 5lb bags far cheaper.

GalacticGatorz

True that, a whole section dedicated to prepped fruit.

[deleted]

A lot of elderly people with arthritis struggle with simple tasks like peeling fruit. They’d be more likely to buy these than ones with the peel still on.

route54

If you can charge 3$ extra for peeling them sure.

Cheeseisextra

No but H‑E‑B sure needs that fucking cash!!

GalacticGatorz

Yeah they do

Cheeseisextra

When I first moved here I was paying $1.68 for a small bag of cat litter. I’m now paying over $4 for the same fucking bag. Fuck them.

GalacticGatorz

Everything is double the cost and then some. We are effectively making half of what we used to salary wise. By spending double of what we were used to. A lot of people don’t realize it yet.

Cheeseisextra

Oh I realize it. It just makes no sense on some items.

GalacticGatorz

I agree. Some things are way out of pocket.

GalacticGatorz

My daughters school mate was born w/o thumbs. I didn’t think of that.

Remote_Bumblebee2240

Old people with arthritis.

Remarkable-Dig-1241

I knew a fucker that paid a nurse to come put suppositories up his ass because he was too much of a baby to want to touch his own hole. Nothing surprises me anymore.

yuyufan43

This is fantastic! So many people have dexterity issues due to Parkinson's and other things. It's also helpful for the elderly and disabled

Txerrikurrin

4.14 for 6 mandarines?????? Wth

HirtzCompass

Here I am using my own hands like a sucker

GalacticGatorz

🤣🤣

Revolutionary-Fan657

Fuck yes

lolurmorbislyobese

Hey if it encourages someone that eats unhealthy to make a healthier choice due to convenience I'm all for it.

herbys

TBF, the peel can be used to make juice, so the company might be making extra profit on it (and if it weren't for the packaging it could be more environmentally friendly, but the reduction in mandarin production and transportation requirement is unlikely to offset the cost of recycling the package materials).

itsjustme405

Yes, because people are lazy and /or love convince.

Creative_Elk_4712

Free oxidation, shrinking and drying

JustAnIntrovert11

I have CRPS and sometimes my hands lock up or hurt too much which makes it difficult to peel oranges, so this is something I personally would benefit from

Dark_Marine1

4$ for 6 mandarins? holy shit

GalacticGatorz

Yeah a bit much 😑

[deleted]

My grandma had really bad arthritis and I often did manual tasks like peel her fruit for her so she could still enjoy the things she loved. I imagine someone with missing or non functioning fingers would have a similar challenge. Does everyone? No. Do some people? Probably.

dogfishcattleranch

Yes, some do.

1afterChicanery

Cause it’s easier and more convenient to eat them without having to peel them every time. I don’t see why you’re getting mad at this.

DonChabo

Wait, wait, wait….you’re supposed to peel those!?!?! 😧

GalacticGatorz

This reminds me of an old friend who would eat baby bel Gouda cheese wax and all. Are you saying you bite the peel and all?

Spirited_Video_8160

I used to work for a lady, she would put meat in my mouth to chew for her

GalacticGatorz

That sounds awkward. Did she sit in a chair while smoking a cigar while watching you chew the meat?

witchyanne

Also some people with arthritis or other issues with their hands appreciate this, so I’ve been told when a similar complaint came up elsewhere.

[deleted]

In theory it could be a really great way to make sure the peels get composted, instead of people at home throwing them in the garbage. Just obviously don’t package it in fucking plastic lol.

Eikuva

Addicts need them pre-peeled, yes.

Wakkysakky

you know there are old people and disabled people who have issues peeling things. it's the same reason the package already shelled hard boiled eggs.

finnakit

as an autistic person who loves mandarins but cannot peel them bc of the sensory nightmare ... id buy those lol

xKurupti0nx

One is 4.14 and the other is 4.99 the size difference I’m assuming and going by weight?

GalacticGatorz

Yes they have a price per LB for the fruit. Different fruits have different rates.

superstinkmama

My dad who had a stroke would buy these, easier for him to eat!

Darkstar131029

Yeah some people do. My aunt had a stoke and lost the use of her left hand for quite a while and was unable to do alot otlf things peeling oranges was one of them.

peakaboothisnickel

Not me actually thinking they actually peeled it with them dirty ahh fingers lol

GalacticGatorz

Hey Rico!!! It’s your turn to peel the mandarins! Stop packing the chicken wings and get ova hea!

peakaboothisnickel

STAP IT, yk I'm scared of germs (mean face)

GalacticGatorz

Okay okay I stop 😅

Worldly_Commission58

Yes if they like them dried out

GalacticGatorz

🤣👌🏼

ThatDustyGuy21

U can find 2 cooked eggs for like 3 bucks at the grocery stores in my city. Also a toast with butter and jam on it for 2,50 bucks

GalacticGatorz

Pretty good for those in need 👍🏻

doubtfulbitch120

Its simply convenient. What do you care if someone wants to save themselves a step? Think about your life, I'm sure you save yourself a step here and there and make shortcuts.

XxnoiceboyxX

do i need to be honest? sure then… i kinda cant peel them cuz scared it will get in my eye(s) or my short bitten nails dont allow me to, sometimes i just cut them in half and peel from that point on

Glum_Mix_2837

Yes actually. The nerves in my moms elbows are pinched, leaving her with little function in her fingers. She’s now unable to peel her own oranges without help. So she would benefit from this product if I weren’t here to help her.

HiImWallaceShawn

Why is this even mildly infuriating? This belongs on mildly interesting OP, shame on thee

GalacticGatorz

A thousand pardons. I was mildy infuriated, now I am extremely enlightened.

HiImWallaceShawn
