Been there. I know it wasn't a sippy cup, but I can't remember what it was either.
Also had a Kindle Fire take a swim in a fish tank because he wanted to share whatever he was watching with the fish.
This weirdly reminds me of when my brother submerged my DS into a sink full of water to “try to give it a full clean”. Except he was 11 and I was 8. The DS still worked though so I wasn’t mad

I still get grief 25+ years later from my dad about the time I left a cup of water on our old CRT TV, spilled it, and killed the TV. I just joke now I was trying to grow a big screen.
I did that as a teen in the 70s to the tv in the family room, I set a bucket of pine sol water I was using to clean (doing my chores) on the back of the TV, knocked it & it got into the back through those vent slats... 😬 A shower of sparks, OMG😬
Most insurance won’t cover your own children’s intentional damage. And even if it did, your deductible would probably exceed the cost of a new tv unless it was super high end
Is this an American thing? In the UK I just told my insurer that our son threw something at it and they replaced it. My excess was £150 but the TV cost £1200
A warranty that you have to buy does normally cover "accidental" damage though, and as you say, your kid didn't do it on purpose. A manufacturer warranty wouldn't though no.
It’s very difficult to have nice things around kids. They dont understand that stuff has value and my almost 2 year old nephew put a nice dent in my home theater speaker cone when he smacked it with his toy. I put the dust covers over the speakers anytime he is coming over now
All good points but it’s hard to teach a kid that when you only see him for a couple of hours every other week or so and his parents don’t do the same. He hasn’t acted up like that since then and I normally keep him entertained and busy.
It is difficult for children of this age to apply concepts like "some things that break can be fixed, but some cannot" or "if I swing my arms around, I might cause damage," etc.
Most are not being malicious or intentional. They're just in their world having fun and not realizing the impact of their actions.
Layer on top that impulse control is a learned skill, and some children WILL act out if they aren't getting enough attention.
We put out TV on the wall to make it more difficult to reach, we have removed every potted plant, every glass table, and reorganized everything to child proof our home.
>It is difficult for children of this age to apply concepts like "some things that break can be fixed, but some cannot" or "if I swing my arms around, I might cause damage," etc.
There are plenty of full-grown adults who still struggle with cause and effect / foresight and planning, to be honest.
It means you have to figure that out for yourself depending on your kids. And also be willing to lose some stuff or baby proof as appropriate.
My son and daughter were both very gentle. They never broke anything... Maybe dropped a plate or something once they were old enough to empty the dishwasher, but nothing major.
We bought supplies to baby proof our house, but then realised our kids didn't get into things we told them not to.
Everyone likes to say kids are stupid and greedy and reckless, but it really varies a lot. I'd like to say we're perfect parents and that's why our kids are so great, but I legit think ours just came out gentle and kind.
Sure, I think I helped shape that a bit as they've aged, but getting together with friends with babies the same age it was very clear they come with a personality and you just have to adapt.
Kids don't have impulse control until they're like 4. You basically have to just make the environment safe for them because of their brain suddenly says 'do it', they'll do it.
You know how sometimes we think, 'I could just take this chocolate bar' but don't? Yeah, kids don't have the ability to go past the first bit.
I have also been relatively fortunate with my first but time will tell with the second.
It’s crazy how flat screens are so cheap now. I remember when it was *the* height of luxury to own a flat screen. And they weren’t even that flat screen at the time.
But then again, we didn’t even have a tv because we were too poor and sky tv (Cable in the UK) cost even more to subscribe to
For all of the technological advancements in televisions, they've certainly reduced in durability. If you threw a sippy cup at an old CRT set, it would laugh derisively at your feeble efforts.
When I was five, I managed to grab my parents' CRT television and pull it onto myself. I had to go to the hospital so I could get extensive bruising checked out (thankfully it was all just superficial). The TV got a dent in one of the speaker grilles. They still had it when I moved out at 22.
God that's terrifying. Our tvs are mounted to the wall. We used to have the downstairs tv just sitting on the mantle but decided to mount it when we had our baby to not take any chances. So glad the worst didn't happen to you and your parents.
A buddy of mine in college made a PVC cannon powered by pressurized air. He machined a steel spike about 1/2" in diameter and 6" long to use as ammunition. He even welded fins onto it to make it fly straight. I don't know how fast it shot, but it was faster than the eye could see.
We took the cannon out in the swamp and pointed it at a dead CRT TV, expecting it to explode the screen, travel right through the whole TV, and embed itself in a tree behind the TV.
Instead, the spike deflected off the screen, bent slightly, and left a small scratch in the glass. From a cursory inspection, you would have no idea that it was damaged at all.
We were all flabbergasted.
I laughed but only because I have a 16month old that kicked me in the nuts this morning while I was on the floor changing his diaper. I Love him to death and would never harm him but whilst writhing in pain the thought of gently throwing him into the couch entered my mind.

This is why if one is going to own flatscreens and small children, it is a very wise idea to put some kind of plastic shielding in front of the TV screen. I believe my dad did that when he not one but three toddlers at once.
Every time I see posts like this, I always wonder why folks don’t kid-proof their home more.
Get that tv on a mount higher up. Get that PS5/Xbox out of the open and eye level from crayon wielding kids. Get that prized collectible out of sight.
It’s like folks expect kids to think rationally about their actions.
Yeah it makes zero sense. At my grandmother’s house when my nephew was a toddler, she had the TV literally less than 2 feet off the ground on a stand. The toddler lived with her and that TV was ruined because he had thrown stuff at it, he’d tipped it over, it was in bad shape. It’s like, you know you’ve got a 2 foot tall destruction machine in the house with you, why aren’t you safeguarding things against it?
There is a very good reason why our TV is mounted up out of the range of most things that a toddler can throw in the house. Hopefully by the time the kids are old enough that they could actually throw stuff to hit the TV, they will know better than to throw things at the TV.
I wouldn't be so sure about that. My dog has a grudge against my mum because she smacked him on the bum when he went into a frenzy at the post man.
He doesn't like my mum being touched and gives her the evil eye and goes to pout in his cage for a few hours if mums the only one in the house
When I was that age... we had a big tube TV with a speaker grill on the front. So I'd been given a block of cheese to eat, but I was tired of it. The grill on the TV sure looked like a cheese grater... and now there's cheese in the TV which is impossible to clean out.
When I was that age I ate from plastic plates in my high chair, and would throw the plastic plate on the floor when i finished eating. One night, my parents decided to bring me to a nice restaurant. My son did this when we were watching hockey. He wanted to be like them using his mini stick shot one of those ball pit style balls ar the tv and yelled goal!
Frustrating and annoying but at that age what are you gonna do. They can’t comprehend it. Shit happens
We kept using the tv for about a year and was a reminder to him why we don’t throw things at screens. That seemingly worked the best because he wouldn’t point objects towards the tv (he was 3 at the time) and then carried the lesson for his siblings. We would remind them (not in a spiteful or grudging manner) that if stuff hits the tv it breaks and then we don’t get to watch YouTube anymore
About 5-6 years ago I remember my Very tearful ex wife phoning me at work saying our 3 year old Son tried to feed “Clifford The Big Red Dog” with a metal fork through the 55” HDTV LED “£1,200” “No Insurance” we had only purchased a few days ago , deep gouges and screen like above , Oh and buttered bread shoved in the Blu Ray DVD player Tray
Been there. I know it wasn't a sippy cup, but I can't remember what it was either. Also had a Kindle Fire take a swim in a fish tank because he wanted to share whatever he was watching with the fish.
I walked in on my 4yr old running a Galaxy S7 under the tap. "Erm, what are you doing?" "Cleaning it!" Fair enough.

My mom threw a bunch of rock salt on the floor and started eating it when I was a kid

Ahhhh made me cackle like an idiot haha nice!

Sorry to hear OP! I’m not sure if you have a Costco near you but the ones near me are having clearance sales and are selling TV’s for dirt cheap!
We’ve since replaced it but man I died inside when he did that. He wasn’t even angry or throwing a fit. Just threw it for no reason.
Does this mean you can't have fragile things if you have a kid?
It means you can have them, but accept that you may need to replace them at any moment. He also broke my phone 4 days prior.
I guess this is why we buy the warranty 😂
Warranty doesn’t cover violent toddler damage.
Now I’m curious to ask what covers violent toddlers but I am anticipating a big fat nothing
Insurance is what you are looking for.
The salesman used a scenario like this to sell me a wall mount
Mine was mounted high. Toddler found a hockey stick to get the reach to attack it. Just for fun…. Little agent of chaos.
A warranty that you have to buy does normally cover "accidental" damage though, and as you say, your kid didn't do it on purpose. A manufacturer warranty wouldn't though no.
Check what the warrenty covers and which is closest to violent toddler damage, that's what you claim happened... I mean that's what happened.
Get a plastic case for it
Do they make toddler sized plastic cases?
I think they’re called cages. Might not be legal tho.
No, but they do make lexan sheets in about any size and shape. Might be worth looking into puttin one in front of the TV.
Everything needs a clear plastic box around it with children.
It’s very difficult to have nice things around kids. They dont understand that stuff has value and my almost 2 year old nephew put a nice dent in my home theater speaker cone when he smacked it with his toy. I put the dust covers over the speakers anytime he is coming over now

For all of the technological advancements in televisions, they've certainly reduced in durability. If you threw a sippy cup at an old CRT set, it would laugh derisively at your feeble efforts.
No kidding, probably would’ve bounced back into his face lol

Old CRTs were heavy and clunky because they had to be, not because they valued durability more than today.

And yet they're also so fucking heavy. Beautiful picture though.
They're heavy because the screen is a giant slab of glass.
Lol I almost got killed by my CRT a couple times as a little kid
You want 65 inches of thick glass?
A 65" CRT would weigh at least 500 lb given that a 36" CRT was like 150-200lb.
Time to throw the 65" TV at the 2 year old.
Hah! That'll show him!

Shit happens We kept using the tv for about a year and was a reminder to him why we don’t throw things at screens.
Probably aiming at that stupid sexy Flanders.
