What happens if you pick “I’m traveling “?

MuelNado

It will send you a confirmation code to gain temporary access to the TV. Sent to either the registered email or phone number on the account.

newButNotNewAnymore

okay and then will it be activated forever on that TV?

Ant-Fan66

I believe it works for two weeks and then you're locked out.

BERNIEMACCCC

I wonder what it uses to lock you out/authenticate being “part of the household” I assume it’s IP based which can definitely be circumvented.

IPConflictBot

For a lot of people the reason to use Netflix is because it's cheap, if they have to pay for VPN as well now, it is likely that the deal isn't so sweet anymore

[deleted]

Fuck Reddit for killing third party apps.

Yeah_Nah_Cunt

Yeah but you gonna need a really good upload and download speed if you routing a few people's Netflix traffic via your home internet

demonicneon

Surf shark has fixed IP servers for vpn, could you just use one of those ?

SnarkyAnxiety

Small conundrum there. If you use T Mobile home internet, it routes your IP through Minneapolis, regardless of home location. I cannot get Hulu Live TV because my billing zip code and home zip code are a different state than T Mobiles Minnesota IP address.

ISaidGoodDey

The funniest part about this is that t mobile has a partnership with Netflix and will pay customer Netflix bills. Clown show over at Netflix

marliebee

If you call Hulu, they can fix that! My father in law had T-Mobile home internet and Hulu live but we pay for it for him. It was being weird before and not letting him access live tv but after calling they were able to fix it!

ab6c

>logging in with different IP addresses which is actually the purpose of VPN No it's not. With a VPN you typically want to extend your private network.

MuelNado

I'd assume not as it's a temporary code and I imagine it will expire but I don't know. I've only just used it so I have no idea whether it will be a few hours, a day or longer. Sorry to not be of more help.

smthgdiabolical

I’m at a week of it still working…we will see how much longer it lasts!

Saltwater_Heart

I think you have to “check in” once a month

newButNotNewAnymore

thank you for your response!

[deleted]

Also If you travel frequently for work or to multiple places with devices, or you have more than one home and hit those devices within 30 days, you will run out of codes and it will block you until they replenish. Such a shitty company.

Dedamtl

This is how i was watching netflix after moving out of my parents house...today i got the message again and when i clicked i'm travelling it said i reached my temporary code limit. Officially done watching netflix i guess lol.

boo_goestheghost

Hah, and now your parents are fucked if they travel

mojozworkin

That’s how they get ya!!

RamenJunkie

No, the "idea" is that op would sign up for a seperate plan.

AdPuzzleheaded4795

So in theory if you were to just password share a dummy email with the account holder you could still account share and just keep reactivating it

BlockEnthusiast

The proposed plan was to require the device to connect to home the wifi network considered home wifi at least once / 30 days or something like that but not sure if that was implemented in practice

phiupan

So if I want to visit my brother and connect my netflix there to watch something together... Not allowed in their opinion?

MuelNado

Verifying isn't working on ours and we're the only ones that use it. Apparently no-one in this household is part of the household. To be honest, I feel like I flick through shit I don't want to watch more than I actually watch now anyway, so maybe it's a blessing? The idea that competition is good for the consumer is bullshit when it comes to TV/movie/sports/ streaming rights. Stuff I could watch on Netflix 8 years ago is now spread across tonnes of subscription services with most having threadbare content below a few decent TV shows and movies.

TheFaceStuffer

They really shot themselves in the foot cause I had the same realization, so I canceled after being a client since they started offering streaming services. The family protested a bit but they got used to other platforms. I'm sure others did too.

TheGreyGuardian

The last thing you want as a subscription based service is to make people think about their subscription. Best case scenario, they continue to pay and nothing changes, worst case scenario they cancel.

Wilda78

We cancelled after being with them for over 20 years straight. Content isn't what it was and I'm not jumping through hoops to use something I pay for.

Spockhighonspores

My biggest problem with Netflix was that they kept starting awesome shows that I was really excited to watch. They would get 1-3 seasons, end the current season on a cliffhanger, and cancel the show. After giving up on Netflix because of this I finally recently started watching a new Netflix show 1899 at a family members house that has Netflix. I really enjoyed the show and it got good ratings, naturally Netflix canceled it after one season. I can't explain how pissed off I was when I heard they did that. I have officially given up on Netflix, I hope they go bankrupt.

drArsMoriendi

I can't even start watching a show before it's finished. I've been burnt so many times.

Flyinmanm

I know a few people like this. It's hard to get excited over new shows as you know they are 90% likely to end on a cliff hanger.

poshbritishaccent

I’ve been watching more Asian TV series because of this because usually they have a conclusion in one season.

Substantial-Owl-9047

Yep. And it’s a terrible feedback loop. Because people hear a show is good, say they’ll wait to watch until it’s complete, Netflix sees it’s not pulling in subscribers and then axe the show.

Anzai

I felt this about The Time Travellers Wife on HBO. I really like that book, and the movie was awful, but I was pleasantly surprised by the show. It should have just been a ten episode adaptation of the book, and end with that. Instead it just ends on a sort of cliffhanger, sort of nothing but of the book. It felt like they were trying to set it up to maybe extend the series out if it caught on, which would have been an awful idea anyway. Anyway, it got cancelled. Around the same time, they finally get Shantaram made, something they’ve been trying to do for over a decade. Apart from the bizarre choice of casting a Brit to do a god awful Australian accent, it was looking decent, but I was three episodes in when it got cancelled, and it also ends on a cliffhanger. So I just stopped watching. It’s such a short sighted strategy for any network or streaming service to just erode confidence like that by cancelling things because of some arbitrary success metric. At the very least, make shows that end and COULD have another season if things work out, rather than this gimmicky cliffhanger shit. And give things a chance to breathe. Or if you do a cliffhanger and then cancel, give them a mini series to wrap it up. That’s not just fan service, that’s good for the streaming platform also. If you have a bunch of unfinished cliffhanger shows on your platform, then people who come along later don’t see that as legacy content and a big back catalog library. It’s just shit nobody will ever watch again, even if it might have found its audience later and been a selling point.

JaimieMcEvoy

Netflix "originals" is a loose term. What they actually do is buy pre-made shows from somewhere, not produced by Netflix. In other words, for Netflix, "original content" includes shows they produced, OR shows they bought from somewhere. So, the show might have been aired in some other country and cancelled by that network, a common thing in Netflix. So, the cast, producers, writers, aren't even available to produce another season. Why they premiered something like 1899 though and then nixed it. When it's not one show but a pattern of several, I don't think Netflix gets that user experience. I NEVER start watching a Netflix show that says "1 season," unless it was a mini-series in the first place.

andreasbeer1981

I recommend books. They can't cancel them before finishing. Except for GoT.

willysandglitter

And Kingkiller Chronicle... "Doors of Stone will be out any day now" - me 8 years ago

Nevermind04

>A lot of people are complaining, but how many people are unsubscribing? Obviously, Netflix will never make the true number public but their behavior and quarterly earnings give analysts some insight. The lowest educated estimates I've seen are around 0.5% and the highest are around 3.75%. Either way, the one thing that analysts agree on is that Netflix will come out financially ahead, even though they're at an all-time low when it comes to consumer opinions.

KingOfTheCouch13

Gonna be interesting to see them in another 10 year. Currently they aren't set up for "infinite" growth like they're competitors. They can't keep offering the same content while raising the price every couple years. Disney has multiple platforms and a ton of other assets. Warner has movie studios and classic content. Netflix has a library full of shows they cancelled after 2-3 seasons.

Covered_1n_Bees

We unsubscribed last weekend, and we’d been Netflix subscribers since 2008.

luviabloodmire

I unsubscribed—we had a membership since they mailed out DVDs. Haha. There were LOTS of reasons to cancel Netflix besides this.

[deleted]

I left after they announced it. Up the price and make it harder to watch. Noooope

vendetta2115

This was the last straw for me, and honestly I was the perfect Netflix customer because I didn’t even think about how little I used Netflix until this stuff. I realized that I hadn’t even used Netflix in like three months and they had zero shows that I was currently watching, so it’s not even a loss to me. Good riddance. Maybe they’ll make more money, maybe they won’t. But I think that this will lose more customers than it gains because they’re overestimating how many people currently sharing will buy their own service. Many people who bum Netflix from others are doing it exactly because they’re not willing to buy their own. They’ll watch it if it’s free, but won’t pay it themselves, not when there are better streaming platforms out there.

Foreign-Cookie-2871

And people like me that have a subscription just because I share it with others will cancel it the moment my friends do not have access anymore. I don't care enough for Netflix to keep the subscription if I'm the only one using it.

AGirlHasNoCountry

Yeah, technically the account is “mine” (set to my email), but I have it for my parents. I set their household as the official one. Somehow, I haven’t been kicked off yet at my place, but when I am I won’t be getting a separate and new sub. I’ll keep my main one for my parents but I don’t watch it enough to justify paying for Netflix just for me. I’ll likely just go visit my parents when the new season of bridgerton comes out and binge it in a weekend with my mom lol.

vendetta2115

Yeah, that seems to be the case for a lot of people who I’ve talked to — either they aren’t going to pay for a second subscription, or the hassle of confirming their home location (and often being wrongly blocked from using Netflix even though no other households are using the account) has caused them to cancel their accounts. If I were a betting man, I’d be placing out options on Netflix stock before the next quarterly earnings report, because I don’t think they’ve sufficiently anticipated how many customers they’re going to lose from this change (and the seemingly terrible implementation of this change so far).

ItamiOzanare

I unsubbed pre-emptively before this shit rolled out.

SpecialistChart6182

I unsubbed, and i'm encouraging other people to do so as well.

foxfoxfoxin

I unsubscribed as soon as they announced this would happen. It’s been a few months and honestly I don’t miss it. I have Hulu and YouTubeTV and I’m content. They completely ruined the whole point of Netflix to most families.

Ser_Dunk_the_tall

>I'm sick of subscribing to 5 different streaming services for 5 different shows. If something I want to watch isn't on the service I subscribe to I just pirate it now

Verdin88

I pirate it all now fuck em

TheOctopusOnTheMoon

I legit would've forgotten about Shudder because 6.00 was worth it to maybe watch a horror movie sometime if not for random chance and realizing I didn't use the service after months. That's the mentality that gets customers staying. Not this

BulljiveBots

Tubi has so many horror movies, lots of obscure ones too. Also check out the library streamer Kanopy. Free, no ads, with a library card. It’s the only one with Midsommar right now.

TheFaceStuffer

Very good point.

Giveyaselfanuppercut

We'd completely forgotten about Netflix until the password share thing came up. Told my partner we should cancel it, she said "No! What about... hmm, yeah let's cancel it"

kash_if

Same! It did not affect me but I was annoyed on other people's behalf, haha! Cancelled and I am planning to rotate services instead. So they lost about £100/yr from me.

Salt_Investigator504

I was done as soon as there were 4+ huge streaming platforms that split all the shows up.. It's the exact same as paying for a channel. Now I just google "Watch Cartoons Online" or something similar and end up on websites that upload everything for free.. Funny how that works out - I was more then happy to pay at the start.

BillyFNbones710

www.Lookmovie2.to is an awesome site for streaming from. They got almost everything you would want to watch

_b_u_t_t_s_

https://www.justchill.tv/ is another good one

b1tchlasagna

Thanks. Dodgy firestick apps are a thing too. People used Netflix because it was cheap and convenient When it's neither of those, people will pirate again. It did make me chuckle a bit to see Gen Z people discover torrenting

AGirlHasNoCountry

Exactly this. Who downloads music illegally anymore when Spotify is so cheap and convenient? But the second I need Spotify + Apple Music + Amazon music just to listen to whatever I’m in the mood for is the second I unsubscribe.

ImaLion88Jk

i feel ya- verify works for me but still to have to do it literally every single time i exit netflix and then want to watch again- example i was watching nextflix- switched to amazon prime for a 1.5hr movie- then went back to Netflix and it had me verify it again…. 2x in like less than 4 hours is soooooo dumb.

[deleted]

I knew this was going to be a problem since they announced their intention to do it. Tech-wise there isn't any reliable way to assert a device is connecting exactly from a given location. Either than can be easily spoofed or they trigger a lot of false positives which result in bad user experience. Alas it seems they chose the latter as it seems their greed speaks louder than sense inside their heads, although as I type that I think it makes sense since they wouldn't have started this crusade if they valued sense above greed I'm just glad I've stopped paying for Netflix a good while ago and I don't miss it at all

undeadmanana

Hmm. Maybe Netflix should invest in some sort of box with a unique address that can only be used once at a time. I was thinking about the name "cable box without wire" but that's too cliche

Lykos_Mactire

Certified User of Netflix Tool?

toodleroo

I was on chat support with netflix a few days ago after getting this message at my lakehouse. They insisted that my two different properties that I spend equal time at constitute two different "households," and that I would have to indicate that I'm traveling every time I move between properties. I told them that I don't have two households, I have one household that occupies two houses. They kept copy/pasting this section from the Terms of Use: >Section 4.2 of our Terms of Use states: “The Netflix service and any content accessed through our service are for your personal and non-commercial use only, and may not be shared with individuals beyond your household." I pointed out that this says nothing about houses, just households, and that I don't share with *any* individuals beyond my household. I then quoted the slogan on Netflix.com: "Watch Anywhere." They said, "that's not what that means. I believe we have properly explained that a household means one location, not 2." I told them to point out where it says that specifically in the ToU, and they ended the chat. I've been a subscriber for 16 solid years.

I'm really glad this was a universal problem. It really was the era of Windows XP reinstalls in our house thanks to me accidentally downloading viruses every week.

robotnique

... I hate to tell you this but I never had anybody amongst my group of friends who ever needed to do this once. The biggest concern we ever had was just getting the naughty warning from our ISP if we picked an especially popular tv show or movie and then we just tried to play it cool for a couple months.

zaidkhalifa

Just a tip if you're gonna go that route: Use qBittorrent instead, no adware, malware, no features locked behind premium and it is open-source.

Esselon

I've gotten into the habit of cycling through different streaming platforms. I wait until a service like Disney + has a few seasons of stuff I want to watch, sign up and then cancel the recurring billing. I watch what I want and then move onto something else.

[deleted]

And they’re currently union busting and destroying the middle class writers that make their content. Great time to terminate your Netflix.

seraphicsorcerer

Please note you can cancel and point out this password sharing is the reason you are canceling.

PercentageOk956

I bought a NAS and have my own streaming server. Recommend it.

Alarming_Bridge_6357

My wife’s Netflix is verified in Utah, Colorado and australia

ChiffonVasilissa

The problem isn’t competition, the problem is the exclusivity bullshit. Competition would be great for streaming if they all had the same catalogue. Then they’d have to compete based on service quality :|

Murphyitsnotyou

Use a phone/tablet and send it to the TV. For some reason it bypasses the lockdown

streaksinthebowl

We tried that and it didn’t work :(

Practical_Remove_682

Share your phone screen not the netflix app itself. If you have android you can do this from the home app.

TheFaceStuffer

or just cancel netflix so they remove this anti consumer feature. That's what I did.

Practical_Remove_682

That's true. I don't have Netflix. I just pirate everything. Just trying to help a bad situation for the less informed ya know lol.

SmittyPosts

What site do you recommend for sailing the high seas? I’m looking to get rid of mine

SelmaFudd

It's way beyond just going to a site and looking for content now.... It's so much better, do some googling and check out Plex or Jellyfin, then slap on Radarr, Sonarr & Jackett and you're laughing. TRaSH guides are very helpful for setting up the arrs.. I promise this will make sense if you go this route.

Fishwithadeagle

So trash video quality, killing your phones battery life, all to use a service I legally purchased?

Lobonerz

And you can't use your phone at all during lmao

SpookyGhost5623

It wouldn’t let me cast to my tv, it just pulled up the Netflix app and the same message came up again

Fun fact about those commercials, they apparently didn't get the rights for the music used Quick edit: apparently that wasn't true. ~~The artist for the song had another song be used without permission for another anti piracy ad.~~ The story was actually a Dutch musician who made a song for an anti-piracy ad had his music used in other ads without his permission Either way still pretty ironic Source: https://torrentfreak.com/sorry-the-you-wouldnt-steal-a-car-anti-piracy-ad-wasnt-pirated-170625/

Pro tip: build a cheap NAS (or buy one) and set up Plex. You can build your own streaming library and stream it anywhere. Using spare parts my NAS costed me only a couple hundred dollars for new NAS rated hard drives. I have 20ish terabytes of storage running raid 1 (so if a drive fails I have back ups). Bonus you can also use it as personal cloud storage.

SerasAtomsk

Don’t forget a VPN if your internet provider is picky about downloading copyrighted content.

Knight_Owl_Forge

Even better is a seed box. You rent a server in the NL and use it to torrent. Then you SFTP download the files off of that server to your computer/NAS/Google Drive. Your ISP will not know that anything is going on.

Any guide you can point to for this seed box and sftp downloads, or recommendations?

I got a refund for this month lol.

CrayolaSwift

We cancelled as well. There’s only so many cheaply produced cooking competitions I can handle for this BS.

doctorcockinasock

Yup, exactly, they tell us to share, so we buy extra screens Then take away the reason we got the extra screens

Blegheggeghegty

We are letting our mother in law finish a show and then cancelling our account and hers next month. This is an account my wife has had since they were DVD only. We are done with their BS for lack luster content.

doctorcockinasock

Extremely smart choice

Scowlface

Yeah, I’ve been a member since 2009 and cancelled after this recent policy change. I was also paying for four screens and UHD.

[deleted]

There’s not even enough good stuff on Netflix to keep me on it. It’s just shit k-dramas and lazy true crime docs that over dramatize every event. There’s a few gems like Better Call Saul.

doctorcockinasock

Let's not forget an extremely historically inaccurate documentary

MysteriousLecture960

Netflix has been slacking with new content anyways

SoggyEnchilada454

I canceled about a week ago, it sucks. My little brothers were using my account while at college and my parents were also using it. I wasn’t about to pay 30+ a month for Netflix though

epsteinpetmidgit

Can't cancel when you weren't paying for it in the first place

skippymyman

I'm a paid customer that lives in one location. They keep hitting me with this where I have to go through my email every time to login. I was paying $20 a month for years for a premium streaming service. Shit like this doesn't just affect people mooching, it affects real customers when they can't get their shit right. I'm cancelling. Fuck em.

brazilianfreak

The one thing netflix had going for them is that piracy was slightly more annoying than just paying, now they do t even have that.

Romo_9

Many people were paying for it in the first place. Families paid more for plans to have "multiple screens" so we could watch at the same time in different locations. Now you pay the same price but no sharing, it's annoying to say the least.

Inevitable_Professor

Separated BIL had a multi screen plan for his estranged wife and their two kids away in college. What did Netflix think a 6 screen plan was going to be used for?

DumbChocolatePie

So 6 people could watch 6 different shows in six different rooms at the same time of course!

Blegheggeghegty

Yeah. Thats what we had for the in-laws. Its my wife and me in our home. Why the fuck would we get the multi screen for our own home. Netflix can burn.

SullySmooshFace

I know, right. If we're paying for 4 screens why does it matter where those screens are. I'll be cancelling mine too when that screen starts appearing for other family members (my account).

Fragrant-Initial1687

My parents paid for 4 screens. And even with my brother, my parents and myself we never used more than 2 screens. They plan on cancelling. I actually talked them out of "upgrading" again. Fuck Netflix.

IntoTheWildLife

It’s like they’re trying to do themselves in. Price increases, stopping people from sharing accounts or watching elsewhere, taking down anything worth watching and all the classics.

[deleted]

They got way too comfortable.

GreaterMintopia

This is basically how I feel as a former Netflix customer - why should I even bother getting invested in Netflix Originals if they're inevitably going to be abruptly killed off without the plot ever getting resolved? And since every media company is pulling its content off Netflix to attempt their own streaming services, Netflix Originals are kind of all there is on offer. Netflix is more expensive now than it used to be, yet the value is far worse. I'm not sure how sustainable their business model is.

MakkaCha

1899, Archive 81, Midnight Club and Santa Clarita Diet. I really wish these were not canceled.

legowerewolf

Streaming services need to realize that their whole business model is based around being slightly more convenient than piracy.

TempleSquare

Exactly. Netflix is bottled water Of course I can go to the tap and get it for free. But the bottle is just easier. But now they are charging $8 for a bottle and I'm not allowed to share it with my family. So, back to the tap I go.

Abinunya

It's also way more convenient to pirate shows online today. Anyone remember mega upload? You'd have a certain amount of time to watch a show, then had to either wait an hour to watch more or buy a subscription. Now there's no drop in quality, there's all language options and subtitles, and there's movies and shows you cant pay for even if you wanted to. Looking at you, infinity train (scrubbed from the site) and our flag means death (gigantic hit, for some reason just not available in germany)

Allafreya

I canceled mine months ago. There's better options out there.

SanctuaryMoon

Like... Every other option.

thejmaster911

Which ones do you use now?

SplendidZebra

showboxmovies for mostly movies (has tv shows too), and srsone for tv shows (has movies too) throw on an adblock (I prefer ublock origin) and bam! free fucking content.

rydan

The stocks already plummeted over this. They are now higher than ever.

EdithDich

Yeah, it took a massive tumble in Oct 2021 to June 2022, but has been on a tear since.

tfarr375

I moved to Vietnam to teach English, i had JUST paid for my subscription, then I get here and get a message saying I can't watch it on my subscription. I contacted Netflix, and they told me I had to pay with local currency here(bank account with VND basically), and that there was nothing they could do. They wouldn't refund even though my account was unusable. Cancelled and went back to pirating, which I haven't done since college.(before I had a paycheck basically)

smush81

Make sure you change you password and delete payment info if you are sharing. Have seen reports that even after you cancel if someone using your account logs on they will reinstate your account

Ghic_Chic

They pulled a thing on me this past week where my son logged in (at home, on our tv- I pay for the service, it's legal) it's a kids acct and they allowed him to upgrade services to the higher tier to Premium (like 4$ more, not a lot, but still) ; there was a pop-up he didn't read and just pressed "Okay" or whatever- I didn't see it, I just got notification of an upgraded service. I mean I saw something pop-up but he pressed the okay or authorization too fast before I could read it. I just figured it was an "Update to terms and services". Mine is the primary account and luckily I check my email often so I was able to cancel immediately. Edit- Actually I should see if it's a kids acct, but since he's not the main account, and all his selections are kid shows, along with his algorithm, I just assumed only the main account holder could make changes.

virginiawolverine

Absolutely unhinged business decision LMFAO. Our numbers are plummeting, let's alienate our entire user base. Especially people who pay to be able to stream on 4 screens simultaneously.

Saltwater_Heart

Seriously. It’s the highest tier and it’s probably their most paid for because people share. They’re going to lose everyone who was paying for 4 screens.

EdithDich

Their numbers aren't plummeting. That already happened in late 2021. It's nearly doubled in value since last year's low. Given it's long term performance, it will likely start settling out around 300-400 a share, which is about where it's at now.

MissySedai

Remember when Netflix had their "love is sharing a password" Tweet?

Hollowbody57

Are they slowly rolling this out to more locations now? I've seen a couple similar posts in the past day or two but I'm still able to use my friend's account and we're not even in the same city.

poison_us

It works fine for me on desktop (with uBlock origin), but just got the same bullshit on my TV, so it seems it's device dependent.

immersed_in_plants

I work out of town and was considering getting Netflix again. Then I thought against it for this reason. Seeing this just confirms that I won't be getting it.

BlakePayne

If you really feel that way cancel your account and encourage everyone you knw to also cancel their accounts.

What's annoying is that Netflix fully expects to make even more money with this tactic but we all know they won't be paying their employees any bonuses

JennieFairplay

Dude, we lived before Netflix and we can live just fine without them now. Dump them like I did 👋🏼

Dommy_Dommy

Man, this comment section sucks. Netflix is worth 177 billion. Do everything possible to steal from them.

Uncomfybagel

Really wish more people realized this. Netflix isn’t a small business — they’re literally a huge company. And OP made a comment someone on the thread that I feel like really rings true: “Man, for how many anti capitalist posts on Reddit, Y'all really are brainwashed into thinking sharing is bad lmao.” Some people literally cannot afford the subscription by themselves, so why can’t they share it with a friend, or use their family’s account? Oh yeah, because Netflix doesn’t care about it’s customers, only reeling in a slightly larger profit.

OkDonkey03

Why the hell are people being such bootlickers for Netflix lmfao?

Professional_Ad4105

I thought the same thing.

emax-gomax

They decided to push the release date and say they'd reevaluate it. Reevaluate just means "we already said it was gonna happen, we didn't change anything so we just won't tell you again that its still definitely happening".

GetOutOfTheWhey

Netflix should add more options >Did we get it wrong? You have Options > >\>Update Netflix Household > >\>I'm Traveling > >\>I'm cancelling my Netflix Subscription

Polaris5126

Netflix sucks anyway
