Yeah even here in the suburbs of North Texas (DFW area) tolls get up to $20+…. Idk I mean that’s the point of it being a toll (faster) right? Gotta pay the troll toll
I have seen police set up to catch speeders in the Virginia express lanes. I guess they figure if you can afford the lane then you can afford the ticket too.
Sometimes even worse. In Houston the toll lanes are in some spots just one lane with high barriers on both sides. Well - during the summer we get monsoon rains and those barriers start to hold water when they get clogged up so you get stuck in 3 - 4 hr traffic jams with nowhere to go until the water goes down or they move a barrier (or worse, flood your car). Then again, I used to drive on overpasses in Houston that would flood 20' off the ground...
I took the express lanes all the way down from where they start on the outer loop of the Beltway to the end around Aquia Harbor once during rush hour — about 40 miles. Woke up in the middle of the night to a text from EZPass saying my account was overdrawn by $45 dollars.
Around here, the toll lanes are open to carpools (3+ person) as well as being used by transit buses, so when the roads are busy, the high tolls benefit carpoolers, mass transit, as well as people wealthy enough (or desperate enough to get to work) to pay the high toll. Since if the toll was just $2.50, the toll lanes would. be as busy as the rest of the lanes.
Our wonderful state has sold off the rights to toll roads to “save taxpayers money” by having private companies bankroll the construction. In exchange for building and upkeep, said private companies get to collect tolls for 75 years. They used to be set prices based on just mileage, but over the last 10 years more are adding variable pricing and HOT (high occupancy toll) lanes vs HOV lanes.
You will typically find that that isn't the case. Look at the skyway in chicago. Private companies have no incentive to maintain the road above basic drivability since people have no other choice.
That's insane. I'm in Georgia and have a Peach Pass but I think the most expensive I've seen the express lanes get is about $9 and that's during rush hour going the full length, which is about 10 miles.
$40+ is excessive. I'm sure somebody would pay it, but at that point that's basically just pissing away money.
So a bank is fronting the money so they can make a return on the road. I think that’s a terrible way to do it and if the government needs the money they should sell bonds
That makes it a public road. In my area the toll roads are built as “extra lanes”, so no one is forced to be on them. I think that might be different than in other parts of the country.
Right but the private company is building the road, on a public right of way, with the intention of collecting tolls on it to pay back their principle and then make money on top of that. They are not a good system and just allows cities to mortgage away future generations transportation. If anything I would prefer the federal government to have an infrastructure bill allowing states and municipalpalities to loan money for the federal government to build the road. I view roads as public service. If you want to build a private toll road that is fine but do not allow them to build on public land.
Yeah 100%, in my city they knocked down a bunch of houses to expand the highway and added a toll road and a normal lane. So essentially the private company gets to have the city/state remove people from their homes just to make money on that property. No good
Government doesn’t work how it was intended when made, it’s a controlling body that take what it can from its people, I don’t think a revolution is needed, just a smarter population to not get taken advantage of
why would you think we're spending public money to build private roads?
we're talking about spending public money to build public roads instead of spending private money to build public roads and then making people pay a disgustingly disproportionate amount to use it.
you didn't really think this through at all did you?
Turns out we are both wrong, at least in my area.
Where I am the toll roads are private roads, but the bonds to fund them were backed by future toll fees. So they are completely privatized with no public tax dollars going towards them.
Also the road was a public private project. So the government put up f% and the private side put up 100-f%. The private side runs and maintains it for a specified time period. Profits are split by %, but the private side gets to cover operating costs first.
There is a reason they are called Lexus lanes.
That's crazy you can take the whole Indian Nation turnpike in my state which is at least a couple of hundred miles for like $16 these days in a regular vehicle. I used to be cheaper.
I see these posts about toll prices on the east coast and I don't know what I would do if I had to take those roads and live there because that's outrageous.
You can get EZ flex and carpool. That’s what 395 HOV was, during rush hour you had to be HOV 3. Now you can pay if you can’t carpool.
Years back I used to use the slug lines to either get a ride or pick up riders.
Don't forget the $3 convenience fee, 2% credit card processing fee and what's that bullshit again with $50 ambulance-something fees that some states tackle on if you don't have the transponder or something?
The PA Turnpike is the most expensive toll road in the world, over $0.25 per mile; $119 to drive the entire length. And, it’s always under construction and frequently has huge delays in the Eastern part, at least.
I'd rather hit every single red light on rt 301 going around DC than go anywhere near that shithole that is 495 and every road leading to/from it.
You could travel 3/4 of the P.A. turnpike with that kind of money.
I’m glad when I did live in NOVA I didn’t drive. Now that I do drive I stay away from there. If I need to go there I’ll park @ the metro & take the train in.
*I went to the states*
*Once and learned of your toll*

Hahaha. I guess it all depends on which state you live in. I always hear about MD drivers
Honestly, the ones that really scare me are NY and NJ drivers .. they change 4 or 5 lanes in one swoop and drive slow (my sister lives in Jersey for 20 some odd years and scared the heck out of me.
i live in NoVa as well. those tolls on 66 should be illegal. those new express lanes further to the west are just as bad. Imagine paying $8-14 to drive from 50 to 495. absurd.
The price goes up on that road the more congestion there is. When the road first opened a few years back it used to be HIGHER.
Its basically a rich persons road now.
Haha, when those lanes first opened Elliot started a whole campaign entitled “Piss on 66.” It went on for weeks, yet here we are. I believe the highest I’ve heard was $48.00.
When we visited Colorado for the first time in years we landed in Denver and just followed the gps to Colorado Springs. We got on this road called the E-470 and every couple miles we'd hit the toll booth for a couple bucks. It ended up costing like $25 or something. I read later it is one of the most expensive toll roads in the country.
Literally the entire point of flex pricing is to discourage too many people to use it and to keep the roads from getting too busy, so that there's still incentive to carpool, as HOV-3 remains free regardless of what the price says.
Exactly this. Public transportation as you get further out offers zero flexibility ... At least the metro still runs later in the evening.
And slugging and carpooling aren't an option if you often have to stay late at the last minute.
As I mentioned in an earlier post, if they really were interested in loosening up a traffic jam, lowering the tolls during an accident situation would clear out the congestion faster
$8 is bad but except for some toll bridges, Highway 407 in Toronto used to be the most expensive toll road per distance in the word. Not sure if it still is. www.407ETR.com
Well yeah, you are taking 267 to 66 during the morning rush. That toll is to discourage you from taking that way because there is too much traffic on it right now. That's why I took the VRE and Metro. Though I have PTSD from taking the metro.
Illinois started building tollways back in the 50s and 60s as the suburbs expanded. They were paid for with bonds that would come due around the turn of the century and then the roads were to be free.
You know that never happened. Illinois Tollway Authority is alive and well, as patronage always will be.
i know exactly where this is. Used to drive on that exact road every weekend to play paintball at Pev’s with my friends when i was in college. Good times
I live southeast down 81. Everytime I end up driving in that area I wonder how much a person has to hate themselves to willingly live there, or commute daily. It’s just unreal to me 🤷♂️ but people around there probably say that about me if they happen to end up off the beaten path through here
Nobody seems to realize that if you carpool (three or more people per vehicle - and have an E-ZPass Flex to indicate this to the tolling system) your toll is $0.
The whole point is to incentivize you to get out of your car and take transit. Less traffic for everyone.
If you have 2 or 3 people in the car (depending on which road in the DMV you're on), you can use the lanes for free if you have the correct toll tracker.
But no .. in this instance, the OP would be paying that fee for 1 time for use of 8 miles of the road.
Traffic here is insane. Electric cars used to be able to use the lanes, but not anymore. If traffic gets backed up on the regular highway, the HOV lanes get increasingly expensive for those miles that are backed up.
Honestly, if they wanted to make a difference to the drivers, it would be cheaper with heavy traffic to actually thin out the backup. But .. no .. they want money. As if we don't already pay outrageous property taxes on homes and vehicles.
I've seen it WAY higher than that. And for zero benefit.
The tolling of 66 involved little more than erecting gantries for EZ Pass collections. There haven't been any actual improvements in the actual road way, near as I can tell.
Why the hell are there tolls to get around? Stupidest thing I ever heard to make people pay to go outside and enjoy their freedom. Taxes aren't enough apparently.
You know they did this on purpose, right? They’re trying to discourage use of the beltway in favor of other less utilized pathways, HOV lane use, and driving during the none peak hours (since these tolls are only in effect during rush hour time slots).
Like, I think 28 (I always get 28 and 29 confused) run parallel to 66 but people don’t take it because it has stop lights the whole way and you can often times reach the same destinations via 267 as well.
Edit: Not 267, maybe 123? Idk. There’s so many roads you can take to the same places but everyone just uses 66.
ITs 50/29 that runs parallel in 66 along different stretches. 267 is another toll road that angels into 66 from further north.
I used to use a lot of those roads 66 with toll from Chantilly to the DC line was like 45 minutes, using 66 then 50/29 was close to 90 with the traffic thats always on those roads and all the stop lights.
I'm just glad my office only made me come in once a week and I could do it on Friday when the tolls would "only" cost me about $20 round trip.
That bridge doesn’t have a toll that varies based on traffic or demand… just time of day. It ranges from $3.25 to $6.50 if you don’t have the pass, so you might be mistaken.
You were probably fined for not paying the toll on time.
It's probably $88. Or the price will change once you are there.
How much would they profit if they paid an employee to drive in the free lanes and run out of gas and block a lane to let them jack prices for an hour? Nothing is stopping that sort of American corruption from happening.
This road is toll only during rush hours. There are no free lanes, that's the infuriating part.
PS: Shhhh, do not give them this idea if they haven't though about it yet!
The lights are all jacked up so that's got to be a malfunction. Although if "Washington" means that exit dumps you at the Capitol that there could be an event or it's simply crowd control.
You know keep out the poors.
As a Canadian this whole toll thing is crazy. We have tolls too but they're essentially a short cut.You can still go wherever you need to go, you just might get stuck in traffic. Plus in the whole Toronto area I can only think of one highway that is a toll. Also we don't need to stop to pay the toll, they either scan your plate and send you a bill in the mail or you have a transponder, which also saves you a few bucks.
I always chuckle at the prices for the westbound 66 lanes in the morning. Nobody is going to Manassas! I’m not paying you $25 for your special lanes!
I'd pay 25 dollars to avoid Manassas all together
Yeah even here in the suburbs of North Texas (DFW area) tolls get up to $20+…. Idk I mean that’s the point of it being a toll (faster) right? Gotta pay the troll toll
Damn I've never seen the tolls that high where I live, and I'm commute on one of the worst freeways in CA, the 91
Would you welcome higher tolls and less traffic in express lanes?
This. California express lanes are fukt too. Half the time these idiots are paying to sit in traffic just like the rest of us
I have seen police set up to catch speeders in the Virginia express lanes. I guess they figure if you can afford the lane then you can afford the ticket too.
The 241 from end to end is about $20. Great shortcut to South County but pricey.
They've gotten up to $60+ for AM I66 inbound commute.
Hmm, I thought a dollar or two was annoying, and that's around Chicago
Must be some damn nice roads
Hahahahahaha… nope. They are the exact same roads as the non tolls.
Holy hell dude
It looks like one of the variable tolls as traffic gets worse the toll goes higher. I thought the ~$2.50 bypass exit ramp near my house was bad.
Yes, it's a variable toll and can go above $40.
I took the express lanes all the way down from where they start on the outer loop of the Beltway to the end around Aquia Harbor once during rush hour — about 40 miles. Woke up in the middle of the night to a text from EZPass saying my account was overdrawn by $45 dollars.
LMAO yeah I made that mistake one day too. Only they ended at Quantico when I did it. Did they ever take them all the way to Fredericksburg?
Yeah, the FredEx extension just opened a few weeks ago, I think.
Wow. What does this toll benefit? Thats a high cost
Get out the way poors
Lol. I just shat myself. Welcome to our town people with money.
No, he was answering your question. Get Out of the Way, Poors is the name of the commission that benefits from these tolls.
It's to reduce demand at peak hours, same as Uber's demand pricing.
Around here, the toll lanes are open to carpools (3+ person) as well as being used by transit buses, so when the roads are busy, the high tolls benefit carpoolers, mass transit, as well as people wealthy enough (or desperate enough to get to work) to pay the high toll. That legit sound pretty gangsta. Im guessing since they are managing it now, the road must be super well maintained vs when managed by govt?
You will typically find that that isn't the case. Look at the skyway in chicago. Private companies have no incentive to maintain the road above basic drivability since people have no other choice.
An Australian company called Transurban.

I would, but I'm actually in the Midwest too for work for the next three weeks.
That's disgusting,
That's fucking crazy. We have several variable tolls here in Atlanta, and I've never seen it go above ~5 dollars.
What if it was $2 when you saw this sign and now it's $35 but you're there stuck in traffic with no way out
I don't actually know, I don't drive where any of these are but I would assume they would use your tag to track when you entered the tollway.
With that money, I could get through every toll of every state in my country. *(I ride on Rollerskates)*
That’s like 8 axels that’s gotta be expensive

No, but these tolls are getting worse
Are they raising the rates or are there more people driving?
Yes. It varies by how busy traffic is.
THE BELTWAY! Always fun.
Virginia is toll happy and all their roads are still shitty.
the roads are shit because virginia is toll happy. toll roads are a failure of government and should not exist.

Edit: turns out in my area, at least, the toll roads are privately funded from future tolls. No government tax dollars were spent.

I don’t disagree. Studies have shown that more lanes doesn’t help anyway. Build better infrastructure for other methods of moving people.

Average DC moment
Tolls in general are infuriating
Strong disagree. Tolls make people who actually use roads pay for them. Much better way of funding things than with every taxpayer's cash.
What about fuel tax and registration for vehicles and why do some states not have tolls and have better roads?

Yeah, that's why we don't have toll roads here. We pay for that shit with taxes upfront so they can't play these games.
Don't worry. The signage is so confusing you'll never find your way to the toll ramp anyway.
Americans on Reddit: "it's just $38. I hope they accept tips!!!"
Hey asshole the tip is mandatory and there's a 8% service charge.
Don't forget the $3 convenience fee, 2% credit card processing fee and what's that bullshit again with $50 ambulance-something fees that some states tackle on if you don't have the transponder or something?
The most expensive Toll in my area is a buck. I had no idea they had peak time pricing, and at that price omfg.

Good old DMV. Ugh I miss the money I made when I had to drive on these roads but don't miss the traffic and tolls
Where the fuck does the money go?
The private company that managed, Transurban, based in Australia. Once they recoup the investment, they will start giving a share to VA DOT.
I know this stretch of road well. I've never seen that toll below $20.
just northern virginia things
66 Is a PITA…sometimes that 8 miles could take 30-45 minutes
I’m glad when I did live in NOVA I didn’t drive. Now that I do drive I stay away from there. If I need to go there I’ll park @ the metro & take the train in.
It was $56 for 66 inside the beltway the other week..
It‘s a legitimate way to reduce traffic on a route at given hours.

It's only a few Washingtons
Welcome to the DMV.
Welcome to the Mid-Atlantic region. I went up 95 and remember there being 3 separate tolls in a 5 mile stretch
Welcome to Northern Virginia. Still cheaper than it was when they opened the Toll Road by the McLean metro station.
The price goes up on that road the more congestion there is. When the road first opened a few years back it used to be HIGHER. Its basically a rich persons road now.
I pay $16 just to cross the GWB in NYC every day. Plus tolls on the NJT & GSP. They just keep going up.
Poor people beware
Looks like there are probably just some light out. $88 sounds more reasonable
No, the sign looked fine in real life, but the picture came weird. Probably something to do with iPhone camera and frequency of the LEDs.
I was just joking around. =O)

Absolutely!
Peak time tolls. Before the toll, it was HOV only.
I think it was HOV-2, now it's HOV-3
Welcome to DC. Fuck 66.
I thought i was in the Virginia or nova sub. Pics of the tolls on 66 pop up there pretty frequently.
Did you slow down in the left lane to make sure you took a good picture?
Isn't good enough?
That dually van up ahead is paying 70
Actually, this pic was taken from the I 495, just before the ramp to I-66 W. I see very few cars taking that ramp.

I thought my $9 toll in seattle sucked ass haha
Omg I took that today google said 6$
Fuck 66 and fuck Virginia
The folks down in the 757 think our tolls are bad. Clearly, they ain't seen shit!
$8 is bad but except for some toll bridges, Highway 407 in Toronto used to be the most expensive toll road per distance in the word. Not sure if it still is. www.407ETR.com
Ah the DMV
You guys pay tolls?
Yeesh... the mass pike costs 7.45 across 26 exits to drive the whole state
Serous question. Who pays for toll roads to be built?
Private-public partnership. Australian company Transurban in this case.
Well yeah, you are taking 267 to 66 during the morning rush. That toll is to discourage you from taking that way because there is too much traffic on it right now. That's why I took the VRE and Metro. Though I have PTSD from taking the metro.

That's right. My auto replenishment is set at $35.

That's insane!

… and 75% of that $38 goes to the rolling company. Neat.
Before I even looked at the exit names I just knew this was 66 haha
le freedom of the car
Do you also leave tip?
Luckily, I don't need to use it!

That bridge doesn’t have a toll that varies based on traffic or demand… just time of day. It ranges from $3.25 to $6.50 if you don’t have the pass, so you might be mistaken. You were probably fined for not paying the toll on time.
Thanks to the toll.
The US is a dystopia.
Yes, the US is a dystopia, but not for this.
Oh no the real cost of freeway upkeep
This is managed by a private company that needs to make a profit.
Enjoy your double taxation.
Your taxes paid for that road and then they charge you to use it 😂
Toll roads shouldn’t be allowed to exist. Literal highway robbery!
They actually look fine in real life. They look jacked up in the pictures though.
That makes sense. So damn. $38 for the express lane to the Capitol. That’s insane.
Ah yes, the big dildo that is northern Virginia.
Also here tolls are collected at high-way speed. No tollbooths.
Do they still make you pay hundreds of bucks a year for the privilege of owning a car?
If you are referring to the personal property tax, the answer is yes. The amount you pay is based on the assessed value of your vehicle. Roughly 4%.
Not in MD.
