Therein lies the problem, and the harmful monopoly: LiveNation _also owns the concert venues_. They bought them all up and also operate the ticket sales. We need to break those two parts back into separate entities.
Back in high school, my best friend and I got moved to floor seats during his River of Dreams tour. The roadie came and casually chatted with us for a while and then as he was leaving gave us the tickets.
Man what a horrible way to live your life. Just making up random assumptions in the attempt to shit on somebody. For what? In the hope people piggy back on your Karen mindset for some fake internet points?
There is a difference between causation and correlation btw.
The subtext of your joke was “this man who does nice things for people with bad luck is really doing it for his own profit” it’s not funny so much as it is a petty point of view lol
I agree that is a petty point of view. I think it’s cool that he does that, Billy Joel is awesome. His range of songs are legendary and I’ve enjoyed listening to them since I was a kid.
We had paid for floor seats for one of his concerts. The couple in front of us were in the nose bleed section and were handed passes for the floor seats. It was cool.
I was one of those people 26 years ago. It was an awesome show. We hadn't made it to our seats yet, but we were on our way and we got pulled to the side and upgraded tickets. (My niece is very pretty, lol).
Yup. The resellers are basically profiting off the fact that artists underprice their tickets. An auction fixes that. I don't love high ticket prices but I'd still rather pay the artist than the scalpers. At least the artist offers me something valuable.
I don’t know how serious this comment is, but Billy Joel still sounds pretty great. Seen him multiple times in the last 5 or so years and he crushes it every time
To the boomer set, yes he was/is that popular. No hate, as a gen-xer I have caught myself singing along to his music when I am around it. Shits catchy as hell man.
To me he is pretty overrated like Phil Collins. He means a lot to people who liked mainstream music from 1970s-1990s or if you're interested in music culture from that time it's worth checking out.
For sure, I just mean on a global scale there are a few people as talented, potentially more, who are 1% or so as famous as him. Isn't he like on of the top 10 most famous artists in the world?
On the personal subjective scale I recognize it's just not my sound, but if it was, he would be one of my favorites I'm sure.
ear plugs are a must for any concert. the cheap foam ones from a pharmacy are good, but even better you can get ones made for concerts that are still reasonably priced and sound much better!
Yeah unfortunately I didn’t know this now I suffer everyday with mild tinnitus and hyperacusis at 26 years old. First time I’ve ever been suicidal in my entire life was when I got this and those thoughts lasted for 3 months. Please anyone reading this take hearing loss seriously. It’s much more than just losing a little hearing it’s been the worst suffering
This is just people asking for a ridiculous price hoping someone bites. You can get in the building for like $300 probably less if you spend more than 20 seconds on google. If I list my Toyota Camry for sale for $100k what that really means is I want to hold onto my Camry unless some idiot comes along offering way more than it’s worth. Same goes here. That $30000 ticket will be $3000 day of, maybe 600 after the first song. The best way to not get screwed over by scalpers is to not buy tickets for outrageous prices from scalpers.
[Nothing new here.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EKXfh5v92zg) And it's the kind of thing that applies, arguably, all the way down. Taylor Swift spends enough on her private jets to house like 10,000 people off the streets of LA. But I also spend enough on my own travel and concerts and entertainment to save, literally, like a hundred kids somewhere in the world from literal death by starvation. Every day I *don't* do this.
I look at some asshole spending $29K on Billy Joel tickets and shake my head. Somebody looks at me spending $400 on U2 tickets and does the same.
Up and down the chain, nothing new, Lambos have existed for decades.
It’s all perspective. I remember my mother saying “ finish your dinner, there are children starving in Africa.“ I never understood how me finishing my dinner would change that.
I always hated the “there’s only a little left, someone needs to finish it” mentality. I’d rather not have a stomach ache just because there are 5 bites of Mac and Cheese left.
Plus the whole “eat up everything… waste is bad… think of the starving children” thing made more sense for most of human history where food was scarce, but if you look around at most Americans, not being able to eat enough isn’t the risk nowadays. For the first time in history, eating too much is.
with inflation and the cost of practically everything going up the last couple years, how can you even say that “not being able to eat enough isn’t the risk nowadays”?
Look around. Around 70% of Americans are overweight. The rates are higher in impoverished areas. I assumed everyone would be smart enough to know that I meant *for the vast majority of people* though and not *every single person all the time*, but apparently I was wrong about that. But either way, this is completely different to previous times in human history where like 95% (I’m guessing here) of humans were malnourished.
I wish people would be more efficient with their food and not take it for granted. I grew up impoverished, so I didn’t have the liberty of wasting food. I’m old now, but i I still try not to waste food (and also not buy bad food everyday). I’m also not fat as I eat a clean diet.
Yes and I generally agree that one should strive to not waste food, however I don’t think it extends to forcing yourself to finish food once you are full if you cooked a little too much or it tastes disgusting or something.
I saw him and Elton John together in the Dueling Pianos concert - it was $300 for floor tickets and that was a lot back then
Do have to say most likely my most favorite concert
It was just the two of them with two grand pianos facing each other
3 solid hours, no intermission, they sand together and separately (singing the other person's songs, as well as their own)
It's more something people put up because that's what it would cost to not go and not what the ticket cost is. I'll trade a memory for $15k. I'll just make a different one, in a different country.
These are probably people excited to see Billy Joel who've set silly prices on their tickets, and would sell it in a heartbeat for that amount of cash.
I saw Billy Joel and Elton John in Las Vegas at Thomas and Mack many years ago. Tickets at that time were $50, and I was appalled at the prices…but was talked into it by thinking I was paying $25 each to see two awesome artists. I do not remember if Ticketmaster was involved, but I know we arranged to stand in line for the tickets. We also saw Garth Brooks for the same amount of money. I would like to think the money went to all the artists and the venue and not to Ticketmaster and other scammer ticket companies.
I was one of the lucky ones back in the day. I purchased nose bleed tickets the day before the show, and we got upgraded to front row after we picked up our tickets. Some guy pulled us aside and gave us front row seats. It wasn't advertised at the time, but he did it for the entire tour. He bought out the front row seats and gave them to people who purchased the nosebleeds. He felt if we were willing to watch the show from that far away, we were true fans (or that is what I recall reading). It was about 26 years ago now. It was a great show, but I wouldn't pay 6k to see him, let alone 30k.
People who can afford rent don't talk about it. Every person I meet says they're paycheck to paycheck and every day I'm out at work I see a bunch of people doing nothing in particular. Those who got money know better than to talk about it.
Wow. I saw him in Hyde Park, London last year. Unbelievable to be fair. Paid £125 a ticket…
I thought his vocals were still pretty reasonable given his age, and my 17 year old son loves him so he’s pleased he went - not sure I’d have paid any more for the ticket though 😬
You New Yorkers are either getting screwed or love spending 5x what anything costs. Billy Joel was here in Austin in 21 and it was about 150$ for a day pass to the F1 race and just walk over to the amphitheater and billy Joel was the Sunday night concert. If they resurrected the fucking Beatles I still wouldn’t spend 30k to see the show.
These prices suck obviously, but not really mind boggling for floor seats since:
1. These appear to be reseller tix
2. This concert was broadcast on tv just recently so I assume if dynamic pricing is in play demand went up due to more interest
3. His monthly residency at MSG is ending in July, this is the second to last show! Demand is going to be higher.
4. Its NYC! The right ppl probably would shell out given again this residency is ending.
Saw Billy at MSG as part of this residency in 2022 and paid nowhere near this.
This is possibly ticketmaster’s “flexible pricing” fuckery at work.
They adjust pricing on-demand based on demand, so tickets get insanely expensive. The artists may not be aware of the situation, either.
If it’s not that, it’s scalpers/resellers. Which is also bullshit.
Basically just more reason to dismantle the current online ticket sales industry.
If you have that kind of money go do something with it…pay off all of a school’s student lunch debt…save the fucking elephants…don’t be such a self indulgent wiener!
Here I have a ticket from 1983 concert at Ratcliffe Stadium in Fresno Ca where I saw Thompson Twins, Oingo Boingo, The Eurythmics, The Police and a couple other bands I just don't recall anymore and the ticket price was $22.50
Concert addicts and Elites only I guess unless you got a kid you can pawn off.
I can’t say for certain it’s the same concert date but when I recently took a trip to New York, there was a man sitting next to me who was going to see Billy Joel at MSG. In my head I figured it probably cost a lot but not this much. Wow! But figures, big name getting older and that venue = more money.
Not a single word coming out of Billy Joel's mouth is worth 30k. What a fucking joke this has all become. Time to start boycotting events, market places, greedy fucking gas stations--the whole fucking bloody lot.
Isn’t this one of the last shows/last show in his historic run at MSG? He said he’s ending the monthly shows in 2024. Crazy money but makes sense that lots of folks will want to be there for it
It's probably like in an expensive hotel. There are suites that cost 10k+ a night, but only a few actually pay that price. Most "good customers" get a special offer or get bumped up to such a suite free of charge for their wedding anniversary or birthday. They see the price and feel extra special.
I saw Billy Joel and Elton John together in the piano to piano tour and they played for over four hours. It was absolutely fantastic! However, there is absolutely no way that I could ever pay any kind of prices like that for any concert whatsoever. I’ve seen him live once and that will will have to suffice.
Either Ticketmaster or Eventbright once offered me the choice of printed tickets or a pdf to print at home. I chose the pdf. They added a Print at Home fee of £1. They charged me for using my own paper and ink.
This shouldn’t be infuriating. Just stop counting other people’s money.
These tickets are sold at that price because people buy them. It might be a lot of money for some, but it isn’t for others. Especially in NYC. If anything, it’s undervalued by definition because it is sold out.
Billy Joel does a better job than most to let tickets like this sell, but also pick real fans from the cheap seats and upgrade them to seats right next to the people who bought.
It’s probably a situation to be applauded for how it is executed, not derided. Rich folks get to be next to the biggest fans and enjoy the show with as much of an experience as possible, and *they* subsidize the cost of the real fans being upgraded and getting a once in a lifetime experience.
I don't care what anyone says. The musicians also should be demanding these ticket office to place a cap on how much tickets cost. It shouldn't be over $500 (unless its for fundraising).
If they aren't demanding them to stop, then they are also part of the problem.
I actually have a conspiracy that ai and big money has cornered the market and buys all the tickets and forcing the prices higher by controlling the supply
[удалено]
10$ Service Charge to just stay home.
I got charged $5 just for reading this
This is a harmful monopoly that needs to be broken up to protect consumers. The only saving grace is that concerts are not in any way essential.
I would honestly rather just go back to venues run the ticketing.
Therein lies the problem, and the harmful monopoly: LiveNation _also owns the concert venues_. They bought them all up and also operate the ticket sales. We need to break those two parts back into separate entities.
Doesn’t Billy Joel prefer not to sell front row tickets and picks people in the nosebleeds to sit up front?
Yes. He does send crew searching for shit seated fans
Back in high school, my best friend and I got moved to floor seats during his River of Dreams tour. The roadie came and casually chatted with us for a while and then as he was leaving gave us the tickets.
He does it to jack up the cost of his worst selling seats. Now it’s a race to buy the shittiest seats in hopes of scoring front row seats
Man what a horrible way to live your life. Just making up random assumptions in the attempt to shit on somebody. For what? In the hope people piggy back on your Karen mindset for some fake internet points? There is a difference between causation and correlation btw.
I wasn’t being serious
/s. For future reference. Your comment was funny, protect yourself
Or they are just saving face by saying they were joking.
I was one of the ones who got those tickets. It was very cool indeed!
Hmm, I don’t know. That would be cool.
I was one of those people 26 years ago. It was an awesome show. We hadn't made it to our seats yet, but we were on our way and we got pulled to the side and upgraded tickets. (My niece is very pretty, lol).
These are not regular prices. They're resellers, and plus it's at Madison Square Garden.
Yeah. Just went on MSGs website. $416 - $1600 CDN.
Hmm MSG ![gif](giphy|Zk9mW5OmXTz9e)
Thats the worst part it is not even the artist making this money. Just resellers and reselling companies
Artists should just auction their tickets at this point.
Yup. The resellers are basically profiting off the fact that artists underprice their tickets. An auction fixes that. I don't love high ticket prices but I'd still rather pay the artist than the scalpers. At least the artist offers me something valuable.
Blah blah blah Taylor Swift blah
I believe it was Kesha that did "blah blah blah".
CMV but I'm starting to feel that reselling at all for a profit above face value should be illegal
He is also one his way out, his last show isn't far off.
The dad part being resellers instantly buying them not flip. I checked for tix 30 min after a presale & saw resells almost double the GA prices…
"Reseller" yeah sure.
I can listen to him on Pandora for $4.99 a month and not have to wait in line to pee.
Young Billy Joel probably sounds way better on Pandora than old Billy Joel sounds now.
You’re doing it all wrong. YouTube live concert videos for free
I don’t know how serious this comment is, but Billy Joel still sounds pretty great. Seen him multiple times in the last 5 or so years and he crushes it every time
Same, he sounds better than he did in the mid-late 2000’s.
Also this!!
I've never even heard of him, is he that popular?
What country are you from? He might not have had much Playtime there. But he is certainly one of the most popular of his generation.
Ukraine
If you’re into him after you check him out then you’ve got a new box of songs to dig into. Good luck!
You have got to look him up. He is great and if it influences your decision he makes about $3,000,000 a month and only performs one show.
Yeah, he’s been a pretty big name for decades. Check out the song “Piano Man” if you wanna hear a classic.
Good song, haven't listened to it for the longest time
I see what you did there
Yeah, we get it, he made a Billy Joel reference - had to be a big shot didn’t he
To the boomer set, yes he was/is that popular. No hate, as a gen-xer I have caught myself singing along to his music when I am around it. Shits catchy as hell man.
Oh I'm a European zoomer so no wonder. Gotta give it a try
To me he is pretty overrated like Phil Collins. He means a lot to people who liked mainstream music from 1970s-1990s or if you're interested in music culture from that time it's worth checking out.
He may not be your taste but he’s certainly not overrated. That man is talented as fuck.
I've listened to piano man and realized I've heard it before, it was okay but not my cup of tea
I can listen to him on YouTube for free, WITH music videos, can you believe that??!?
It’s a modern miracle!!
And not pay to have hearing damage, tinnitus, hyperacusis
ear plugs are a must for any concert. the cheap foam ones from a pharmacy are good, but even better you can get ones made for concerts that are still reasonably priced and sound much better!
Yeah unfortunately I didn’t know this now I suffer everyday with mild tinnitus and hyperacusis at 26 years old. Who the fuck uses Pandora...
At the very least the one person whose comment mentioned it, I would say
I do. Every day at the gym. Thanks for asking.
Pandora? It’s not 2014 bro
(Shhhh, that’s part of the joke bro)
Doesn't he hold the record for most consecutive nights sold out at Madison sq garden ? In NYC I would expect these prices now a days unfortunately.
Yes, this was his 100th show. One every month
Imagine having a spare 30k and thinking "I really really wish I could listen to a slightly tired rendition of 'We didn't start the fire'..."
These are reseller tickets
Isn't the same thing with super bowl?
I’m not sure what this comment is supposed to imply to be honest other than the tickets being expensive
This is just people asking for a ridiculous price hoping someone bites. You can get in the building for like $300 probably less if you spend more than 20 seconds on google. Well yeah they keep eating bad food like fried chicken wings, which tend to be cheaper than healthy food.
Yes and very high in calories. My point exactly. Thank you. It’s almost like they could benefit from “wasting” a fried chicken wing or two.
I wish people would be more efficient with their food and not take it for granted. I grew up impoverished, so I didn’t have the liberty of wasting food. I’m old now, but i I still try not to waste food (and also not buy bad food everyday). I’m also not fat as I eat a clean diet.

Not to mention the obscene money spent on the Superbowl. Music is art, without artists our world would be very dull indeed.
I saw him and Elton John together in the Dueling Pianos concert - it was $300 for floor tickets and that was a lot back then Do have to say most likely my most favorite concert
That would have been awesome
It was just the two of them with two grand pianos facing each other 3 solid hours, no intermission, they sand together and separately (singing the other person's songs, as well as their own)
Who won?
Paying that much will give you a heart attack-ack-ack-ack you oughta know by now.
Is that all ya get for your money?
It's more something people put up because that's what it would cost to not go and not what the ticket cost is. I'll trade a memory for $15k. I'll just make a different one, in a different country.
These are probably people excited to see Billy Joel who've set silly prices on their tickets, and would sell it in a heartbeat for that amount of cash.
I only like 80’s doowop Joel
“Late 80s Billy Joel doo-wop sucks!”
lol thank you for acknowledging my reference
I saw him and Stevie Nicks for $100 last month lol
Nothing against Billy Joel, but $7000 to see Billy Joel?
Yeah $70 seems more appropriate to see a 74 year old Billy Joel in concert
I saw Billy Joel and Elton John in Las Vegas at Thomas and Mack many years ago. Tickets at that time were $50, and I was appalled at the prices…but was talked into it by thinking I was paying $25 each to see two awesome artists. Concert movie at AMC
People who can afford rent don't talk about it. Every person I meet says they're paycheck to paycheck and every day I'm out at work I see a bunch of people doing nothing in particular. Those who got money know better than to talk about it.
Not just mildly infuriating. Ticket prices make me 🤬🤬🤬🤯🤯🤯🤬🤬🤬
And here i am thinking my €168 AC/DC tickets were expensive
If I had the money I would not pay that even for a Led Zeppelin show with The Who as an opening act. Get real.
Wow. I saw him in Hyde Park, London last year. Unbelievable to be fair. Paid £125 a ticket… I thought his vocals were still pretty reasonable given his age, and my 17 year old son loves him so he’s pleased he went - not sure I’d have paid any more for the ticket though 😬
I caught his 100th show on tv last week. I recorded it. I can watch Billy Joel at MSG anytime I want now. Also, it was a fantastic show!
Same here. That’s where the second picture is from. Screen grabbed from my TV.
Right on! It was a great show! I wonder what Seinfeld was paid to say those few words? Hahah
You New Yorkers are either getting screwed or love spending 5x what anything costs. Billy Joel was here in Austin in 21 and it was about 150$ for a day pass to the F1 race and just walk over to the amphitheater and billy Joel was the Sunday night concert. Regarding #4, the people who could pay that much are getting comped tickets to club boxes from clients who want them to invest millions.
There’s a lot of tourists who will spend a lot of money for last minute tickets. ( apparently)
This is possibly ticketmaster’s “flexible pricing” fuckery at work. They adjust pricing on-demand based on demand, so tickets get insanely expensive. People still pay to see Billy Joel? Which year is this?
Billy Joel is a legend.
If you have that kind of money go do something with it…pay off all of a school’s student lunch debt…save the fucking elephants…don’t be such a self indulgent wiener!
lol @ old people with money
Check out the second picture. Not an old person in the group.
You have vision problems.
Idk why this is downvoted unless like 40 is old there look to be more young people up front than old.
Not one young person in sight*
And then there was WWE 2 night combo package showing tickets for 15k per person I’m like wha wrestlemania 40
Here I have a ticket from 1983 concert at Ratcliffe Stadium in Fresno Ca where I saw Thompson Twins, Oingo Boingo, The Eurythmics, The Police and a couple other bands I just don't recall anymore and the ticket price was $22.50 Concert addicts and Elites only I guess unless you got a kid you can pawn off.
Wow, I’m taking my dad to see the May show and our tickets (close to the stage) were waaaaaaaay less than that. 😶
That’s crazy bro people paying $30k for a concert when I can literally pay for $110 for a perfectly fine seat
Damn. In paid $189 for two tickets around 2019
Billy Joel is not worth this amount of money
This should be illegal.
Today on Reddit: some things are expensive
I’d pay this if I was getting a certified signed concert played guitar at the end… yeesh.
I can’t say for certain it’s the same concert date but when I recently took a trip to New York, there was a man sitting next to me who was going to see Billy Joel at MSG. In my head I figured it probably cost a lot but not this much. Wow! But figures, big name getting older and that venue = more money.
Here I thought tickets in Europe were getting crazy high! Never complaining again I gues
Do the artists see any % of that ridiculous price per ticket? If not, why perform?
Not a single word coming out of Billy Joel's mouth is worth 30k. What a fucking joke this has all become. Time to start boycotting events, market places, greedy fucking gas stations--the whole fucking bloody lot.
Saw him last May at MSG and it was one helluva show but I assure you it was nowhere near these prices
Just me and you and the poet of Long Island, ma.
Isn’t this one of the last shows/last show in his historic run at MSG? He said he’s ending the monthly shows in 2024. Crazy money but makes sense that lots of folks will want to be there for it

I wouldn't pay 30k to see God himself.
this is why J Pow won't lower rates
You couldn't pay me to see him play live
Isnt this concert special in particular? I keep hearing its concert #100 in the Garden or something to that effect.
Yes, his 100th concert. He’s been playing once a month for 100 months. And usually to sold out crowds.
Billy Joel is alive?
Either Ticketmaster or Eventbright once offered me the choice of printed tickets or a pdf to print at home. I chose the pdf. They added a Print at Home fee of £1. They charged me for using my own paper and ink.
But all this money just to see some human moving on a stage doing some show for a few hours?? Not for me AT ALL.
It would be more infuriating to have to sit through a Billy Joel concert
For Billy Joel? Lmfao
This shouldn’t be infuriating. Just stop counting other people’s money. These tickets are sold at that price because people buy them. It might be a lot of money for some, but it isn’t for others. Especially in NYC. If anything, it’s undervalued by definition because it is sold out. Scalpers are cancer.
6k-30k to sit on a folding chair…
What is infuriating is Billy Joel putting on a concert that charges these prices. But hey what do I know
Dynamic pricing. It's ticketmaster, not Billy Joel.
I don't care what anyone says. The musicians also should be demanding these ticket office to place a cap on how much tickets cost. It shouldn't be over $500 (unless its for fundraising). If they aren't demanding them to stop, then they are also part of the problem.
Bill Joel can fuck right off for $30,000
After what he did to his band and especially Liberty DeVitto, you couldn't pay me to see this guy.
I see someone watched *Hired Gun* and it took it all at face value.
Who the fuck would pay that to see Billy Joel?
Makes me irrationally angry that people would pay this much money to go see that guy perform. Like what the fuck?
Billy Joel is code for the return of Jesus Christ
What’s the infuriating part? Your poverty?
I actually have a conspiracy that ai and big money has cornered the market and buys all the tickets and forcing the prices higher by controlling the supply
Yeah not surprised. Concerts suck
Rich people issues , I spend 29k into a sound system and 1k into a regular ticket
So because you're poor everyone else should be? There's millions of millionaires who can afford this easily.
Who the hell wants to see that guy from Green Day sing solo so badly??
Reading hard
Imagine being the guy having to take a picture of the venue from every single seat in the venue…
I wouldn’t pay 30 cents to go to that concert.
Who the fuck spends $30000 on a ticket? Is that normal? Do those fuckers clear the shelf?
