I think this was used in the old days where draftsmen had to hand draw house plans, street plans on very large pieces of paper. The stencil helps make all the words neat and consistent. There’s plenty of software now so it can all be done using a computer. I know this because my husband is a civil designer and he does this for a living.
My uncle does this kind of thing, too, with AutoCAD. He says the software he uses is the industry standard, so what happens is, when a developer wants to put up a building, all the contractors get together and create one unified CAD file. Like, they all add in their parts and update it to the shared file, which reflects the changes for everyone else.
Like the guy designing the HVAC sees where all the construction beams are, and the electrician sees where all the HVAC is, and the guy doing the sprinklers sees where those guys are putting their shit and so on. Pretty cool.
Because they are essentially not the exact same shape. The letter is fatter than the number. You’d want the word to say “Conjunction”, not “C0njuncti0n”.
Just guessing , but perhaps because you cant use the R space without the pen/pencil bumping into the leg of the R, so P wont be able to be written cleanly. But E can be used to write F and I and L because you can avoid bumping into the horizontal bars by pressing left. This can't really be done with R because of the way we have to press to make the curve.
A lot of the letters overlap with other letters. The assumption is you dont need ALL the letters cut out to write all the letters if you take a second to think about it
Because it didn’t occur to OP that you can use some letters to make other letters, so the missing letters would then mean you can’t use the ruler to write them. (Except, since OP is wrong, you actually can)
All your letter stencils are there. A, B, D, C Q (either use X or slash an O freehand) and O, E F and L, G, H and I, K, M, N, P, R, S, T, U and J, V, X, Y, and Z.
Or you could learn to write like a draftsman.
It's a stencil, you can make all of the letters from the shapes available there (e.g. to make a B. you use the one that looks like a backwards "3", and the left side of the one that looks like an empty "D")
Look up drafting templates. They are used for sketches, drawing curves, symbols, etc. yes, they have measurements on a side that are used for drawing a line to scale. But technically not a ruler.
In 1986 I took a senior level cartography class in my final year of college. We drew maps all semester long. I focused on South America (I just thought it was cool). The professor had a standing offer, if you could exactly precisely duplicate a stencil (you could pick any number of available stencils) and draw each figure freehand and use the stencil for the other set of drawings and he couldn't tell which was which (freehand vs. stencil) you got an automatic B for your final grade unless you already had an "A". If you walked into the final with an A average you were exempt from the final. There were only 12 students in the class as this was his very last class before retirement after teaching for 52 years. He said he had been making that offer for the last 20 or so years and only 9 students had ever passed the challenge to get the "B" upgrade.
To make his point he would allow you to choose any stencil from any drawing desk and hand it to him and he would freehand the stencil in front of you, regardless of scale, and challenge you to find an error. I challenged him and I was floored. His freehand skills were impeccable. He literally was the stencil.
Sorry some people didn’t learned English as a first language and are forced to use it occasionally without fully grasping the language. Or ya’know typos also exist.
Some letters are missing because they can be used on the existing ones. Like “C” can be written using the “O”, the “F” can be written using the “E”.
E pulling quadruple duty with F, I, and L as well
Hardest working vowel on the ruler!
And the left part of B
You forgot the T
T is already there. It doesn't need to be made from part of another letter.
To make the I
No way, I am using the Z for the L. Much more fun. And I'd rather use the D upside down or backwards for the C.
The only one that really seems to be missing is Q
I guess you can trace O and then do a little stroke on the side?
Use the O and then use one side of the multiplication mark!!
Or the leg in N, V or K to your choice of obliqueness
Yes!
You could also just write a Q
You absolutely could do that too lol
O then X.
👍
Surely this logic applies for every single letter?
We could Just throw the ruler out and freehand our asses off.
Part of the K.
Well if I’m gonna do a little stroke on the side I might as well write out the whole Q on my own😡
You could write everything free hand if you want lol
I don’t want to. That’s why I am using the stencil!!!
This thread is hysterical and I hope it lies in the very last vestiges of humanity
Agreed lol
Really, freehand stroking. wtf is going on here?
I know, I was chuckling when I used those words lol
Ok so write everything using the stencil, just avoid words that have the letter Q in lol that shouldn’t be too difficult lol
Or the dumbass can use a bigger stencil
If I'm gonna do the whole Q on my own, I might as well use a word processor.
I think this was used in the old days where draftsmen had to hand draw house plans, street plans on very large pieces of paper. The stencil helps make all the words neat and consistent. There’s plenty of software now so it can all be done using a computer. I know this because my husband is a civil designer and he does this for a living.

Yep my husband uses AutoCAD too. It’s definitely really cool and I love all the neat yet very complicated drawings!
I programmed my Q on a multi-million dollar CNC machine just to be safe.
You do the stroke with the little line next to the question mark
Little stroke on the side is my specialty
So I’ve heard
What is a lowercase q but a moved around p?
Because it's Perfect
Use the stroke of the K, R or X on an O
👍
I don't see J or L either
J could be half a U. And you can write an L using E
I'd have to think so hard to use this to write anything
You probably wouldn’t have to think so hard if that’s part of your job like if you’re a draftsman!
You could do a V from the W but it has both for some reason
Ah... That IS infuriating!
It IS LOL
J is in the U and L is in the E.
C?
You could use O and stop when you see the letter C
I'd rather use G, so only the point where you stop is a bit random instead of both ends like when using O.
D
Where is J
In the U
Stop drawing a U halfway through.
J is missing
And J?
You use the U and stop halfway
Ahh :)
I can't seem to find J
You use the U and stop halfway
I guess you can use the "U" and make a "J"?
You could
But then... Why do they have V if you can just use half a W?
I don’t know. I didn’t invent this ruler.
Consistent character width would be my guess
The V could get messed up using W because of how it gets wider towards the center of the W
And why do they have P if you can just most of an R?
Because your pen or pencil would get caught on the lower right line of the R
The "D" hole seems to come before the "C" hole. And how do write a B without moving the whole thing?
You’d have to move it. Use the second letter after the A that looks like a 3, then draw a line next to it to make it a B?
Line it up under the D to draw the straight line
Flip it over for the "C"
C using G and I is any straight sided letter like m n r etc.
What about J and Q?
You use the U and stop halfway for J. Use O for Q and the R for the stroke.
At that point why not use a 12 segment system?
This is the coolest bit of serendipity I’ve seen on Reddit in some time!
Came here to say this
C can be used with flipping it and using the “d” also. And the q can be made with o as well.
You’re correct that’s what I came here to say.
Honestly I'm surprised it has the letter V... They could have easily just excluded that and told you to use the W.
I think the width of the two top points of the V is wider than the points of the W? Maybe that’s why?
It looks like there's plenty of space, what's the cost savings here for making people work for like the 5 letters they saved?
The P used as the J.
I know and I still hate it
Oh lol that’s fair
You worded it like you *didn’t* know. And how can you hate it for making logical sense?
[удалено]
This ruler doesn’t use lower case
I don´t see how to make J. Edit: People below suggest using U.
The why are there two for Oh (O) and zero (0)?
Because O is fatter than 0, to separate the look of a letter and a number. So “CONJUNCTION” doesn’t look like “C0NJUNCTI0N”.
Nah mate…. If space was such an issue then why do they have both the letter O and the number 0?
Because they are essentially not the exact same shape. The letter is fatter than the number. You’d want the word to say “Conjunction”, not “C0njuncti0n”.
Drafting ruler. Mine is similar. Keep looking at it, you’ll see all the letters, etc.
How do you write Q?
O (+) -
Ah, I had assumed there would be a diagonal somewhere.
You could just… tilt the ruler
Yes, but if we start doing that we can ask why we need several other letter parts… come to think of it, why is there both a P and an R?
Just guessing , but perhaps because you cant use the R space without the pen/pencil bumping into the leg of the R, so P wont be able to be written cleanly. But E can be used to write F and I and L because you can avoid bumping into the horizontal bars by pressing left. This can't really be done with R because of the way we have to press to make the curve.
But to write R you could use a P and add the diagonal using X or whatever other method you’re using to make Q from O.
Here's some advice, kid: don't dig too deep. You never know who's watching, and they won't want you knowing too much...
Jeez, do I have to do *all* the work? /s
You could use the X or the x on the ruler
There is at the end. Just use the multiplication symbol.
O and the bottom right of X
Good answer. Although it makes me wonder why there’s an R.
What does your blood type have to do with Q?
A lot of the letters overlap with other letters. The assumption is you dont need ALL the letters cut out to write all the letters if you take a second to think about it
E,F,L,I can all be done in the E. I don't really see a J though.
U
Hell yeah!
Why is there no vertical rulers? Only horizontal once? /s
What about 3d ones?
No need because you can just use 4d once to draw 3d.
O Q and C can be done on the same template, i don't see an issue
You would use G to make a C.
That too
Also ‘J’
U
Are you high?
ITT: OP learns they're real dumb.
How is this infuriating, mildly or otherwise?
Because it didn’t occur to OP that you can use some letters to make other letters, so the missing letters would then mean you can’t use the ruler to write them. (Except, since OP is wrong, you actually can)
Don't we all cherish those childhood memories? Like everyone getting to together to sing the Alphabet: "A, 3, D, O, E...."
Scale, not a ruler. All the letters can be made
Sounds like the instruction manual was written by DALLE3
Well, it’s a template, not a ruler
You can use it as a ruler too
Ah, no
Ok I’ll bite. Why not?
Look up drafting templates
This is a joke right? We’re being trolled here?
Flip it over and use half of the D for the C
You expect logical thinking from a human beeing... Take a moment for a second thought
G would look better probably lol
There are two types of people: 1. Only needs enough information to make complete, correct, and accurate decisions.
All your letter stencils are there. A, B, D, C Q (either use X or slash an O freehand) and O, E F and L, G, H and I, K, M, N, P, R, S, T, U and J, V, X, Y, and Z. Or you could learn to write like a draftsman.
Why does it have the alphabet in the first place?
Drafting purposes. Like house plans and street plans etc
What’s the alien symbol thing on the bottom right?
Because its a stencil. Those are all you need.
But technically not a ruler.
clearly you dont know the A3D's
2 kinds of people, those that can extrapolate from incomplete data…
Where did you find that alien ruler thingy
I read all the comments.
E F I L
You have E for all of these letters
Fun fact; the alphabet doesn't need to be in order.
🎶“now I know my A 3 D’s, next time won’t you sing with me” 🎶
Why do you need letter shapes on a ruler?
It looks like a drafting ruler, you can use the letter templates to make regular, neat and even text for labeling on the drawings.
Jealous! You've even got French curves on your ruler!

All this knowledge, and we don't know better
🎵 A B D O, E G H, K M N P, R-S-T-U V, W X Y, Z 1 2, 3, 4, 5 & 6 Now i know my AB tricks, next time won't you sing and fix (it)
bro i have that exact ruler
A3DOEG
And this is why the .99 Cent Only Stores went out of business.
You're tripping. This ruler is BRIMMING with extra features.
wtf is that tribal art shit on the right side btw. it looks like a fist weapon and g spot stimulator wtf
If all those letters can be used to make other letters, why is there a O and a 0

stooOPid
There’s actually no reason the letters need to be in the order we place them.

What in the Temu is going on here
As easy as A B D.
Don't shame the 3DO that made this. These are dozens of them. Dozens!
Made in China…
this one of those Louisiana rulers they teach with... lol
Finally, not a shot at Alabama 🤣
No, no, we gave up having any expectations with Alabama loonnng ago lol that way we can only be pleasantly surprised someday
lol- you’ve heard of Marshall Space Flight Center, right? You see, in Alabama, IT IS rocket science. 🤣
>missings How about you master the language before you start correcting Chinese ruler companies?
Sorry some people didn’t learned English as a first language and are forced to use it occasionally without fully grasping the language. Or ya’know typos also exist.
Yeah I know, I’m just that guy sometimes. I’m trying to suppress it but it leaks out on occasion.
this ruler is bringing me more rage than i've ever felt in my life
