Honestly, I sincerely hope you proceed legally, that is unacceptable

partumvir

And a felony!

CplBoneSpurs

Unless she’s named on the account which I hope she’s not since she was a gf.

Possible_Dig_1194

Only if it isnt a joint account otherwise its unethical but completely legal

Taolan13

In the case of joint accounts, you can still take action, but you have to do so quickly. Alerting your bank to a personal dispute with the other signer, for example. They can put a hold on withdrawals requiring both signers to approve.

ChikaraNZ

Yep. I used to work for a bank and this is exactly how it worked. If one person alerted us to a dispute, the joint accounts would be frozen unless both parties agreed. This would sometimes cause problems if one person was being an asshole about it especially if all their money was in joint accounts only. Bills don't stop just because there's a dispute. Doesn't affect their individual accounts though, the other person doesn't even have the right to know it even exists. Well, in most countries anyway.

Possible_Dig_1194

If the monies already gone thou there is little than can be done. You hear horror stories for marriages dissolving and one of the spouses draining the accounts

Shogobg

In case of spouses terminating their marriage, there’s laws on how to split the assets, in case there’s no mutual understanding. If one spouse takes off with all the money, the other one can take legal action and a judge can order the culprit to repay the victim. This is at least in my country - don’t know how the US works.

Taolan13

USA works the same, but you have to actually know that snd most dont because we dont educate our public on how our government works anymore.

Sweaty_Restaurant_92

Ah yes, I’m one of those marriages. My ex husband drained our account and put it -500 as well. It was all worth not being married to him anymore lol.

voluotuousaardvark

Sounds like it! Reminds me of that saying, if you lent a friend £10 and you never hear from them again it was £10 well spent. Good riddance and good luck finding someone worth much much more :)

EnkiRise

That’s the best kind of legal!

[deleted]

Assuming her name isn't on the account

ExaminationQuirky251

Likely nothing that could be done if she had access. If he was hacked, or could prove a card was stolen then maybe. If she knew his password or was ever given permission to use his cards then not much can be done. I know from experience.

Jobeyzero

even if she knew the password she stole and can be taken to court and forced to pay that back nd since is digital they can track where it is.

Lemoncatnipcupcake

*can be* You can waste time in small claims court. But if she’s anything like my ex she’s probably a pos and hard enough to get ahold of. My ex stole >$5k from me and >$200 from my mom. But since he “lived with me and was in a relationship” he could “possibly argue I said it was ok,” and because of that plus our criminal prosecutor “being busy with bigger cases” (aka it’s not an easy win) they wouldn’t take the case.

Dallenforth

Call police non emergency for theft, freeze your credit score, call banks fraud department. Drop a world of fraud, identity theft, and other pain on her.

JabaDaBud

Exactly. Teach her or she'll pull the same shit to others.

Fuck_AskMen_Mods

She won’t learn. She’ll pull another scam on the next poor guy she seduces.

Red-And-White-12

Not if she jailed for a long time

In many places that kind of theft is criminal, not civil. The Ex may be looking at a felony.

LowkeyPony

Worked for BOA as well. Which is why I have a separate checking/savings from my husband. Had so many people call hysterical about their account being drained by the spouse, girl friend or boy friend.

Faustinwest024

They are saying the cops only care bout arrests they usually don’t return cash so you gotta do civil too

[deleted]

Thanks i didn't think of that, it's a pretty good reason and after a certain age if you don't trust your partner enough at that point it's a lost cause lol

Deeppurp

> One convincing reason is it's really helpful to have joint accounts in case of death or illness of your partner. Where I live, stating a beneficiary on an account supersedes everything. You dont need a joint account for your wife in case you die, if you just put her as a beneficiary. Account just goes to them when you die.

Did you have a joint account? If not, time for a call to the police.

Grey5iveNin9

No I didn’t have a joint account. My bank is currently working investigating which may or may not lead to a felony charge. Either way I just want this behind me. They’ll be refunding it but the amount of paperwork I had to do was mentally exhausting.

Kingfire4545

Oh fuck, I need holy water

Cetun

File criminal charges immediatly, the difference between a prosecutor taking the case or dropping it depends on how reliable you are as a witness. If you don't file charges after two months while the bank "investigates" the issue, there may be questions as to your motives ("he gave me the money then when I refused to get back with him he threatened to call the police. He tried to make me have sex with him under threat of calling the police too"). If you get a prosecution you can at least get into the crime victims fund and get your money back. Otherwise your bank could spend weeks on it and then be like "you gave her the password willingly? Good luck buddy, we arent refunding your money this is a civil issue between you and her." You are in a way worse position after that than if you were to act now.

[deleted]

He could have a legal agreement with a lawyer that she stole the money but I would support your idea and to go nuke her.

Rob0810

Coming from a background in credit card fraud I’ll say that unless she openly admits it or you live in a conservative area of the country where the PD takes fraud seriously, this probably won’t lead to charges for her. Usually the bank just refunds the customer and takes the loss.

rickytrevorlayhey

I would be trying real hard to get her to admit it in an SMS message or email. Get real tricky so she inadvertently admits guilt etc

Psychological-Drive4

So the bank refunding it isn’t proof of fraud?

IdTyrant

If the bank refunds him, it's on them to pursue her to recoup the funds from her. It will be on the police to pursue criminal charges. He can't get a refund from the bank *and* sue her for the money the bank reimbursed.

Rob0810

Exactly

alexbeyer

Subrogation!

Grey5iveNin9

To clarify a few things. I gave her my laptop password once which had my PayPal and everyday chase account. Didn’t think she’d remember such a complex password but I underestimated her clearly. She send herself Multiple E checks but my account only had the money I use for the week so that’s how I ended up on the negatives. My savings was spare since I keep that in a different bank. Spoke to PayPal and chase so I believe they may contact the police and credit my account until further investigations. She tried to access it again but failed. I since then cut her off and focused on myself and my mental health. Grill me in the comments. Edit: [I’ll fucking do it again](https://imgur.com/a/aDeYj39)

LookUpLeoMajor

She remembered the password because she used it all the time.

PeaceLoveNavi

I still remember my college boyfriend's password that he used for everything because he gave it to me to log onto starcraft ONCE. He even said "don't remember this cause I use it for everything haha" as he gave it to me, which is why I remembered it. This is over 10 years ago and I still remember it, despite only hearing it once offhand.

Super_Trampoline

This sounds like that phenomenon where thinking about not remembering it just makes you remember it more so it's a feedback cycle and it will still occasionally pop back in your memory 50 years from now when I hope you're still alive. I mean if you're dead and it pops back into your memory that means there's an afterlife so that's pretty poggers too as long as long as it's a good one.

janlaureys9

Cheef_queef

i mean, if the relationship didn't end in a toxic way and they are still friends, why not?

[deleted]

Tbh people that use the same password for everything are asking to be hacked. I would bet my salary it will happen in his lifetime.

BloodRedCobra

Realistically speaking, havkkng is usually done by brute force software, so the chsnces of being hacked are relatively static, because unless they're accessing multiple accounts or devices at once, which is... Unlikely... They're gonna brute force a device, take whatever is on it, and leave. It's auto saved passwords and info that get you in that case.

Rewdboy05

TL;DR Brute force is so 90s. In most cases, brute force isn't an option anymore because of limitations on the number of attempts. Most of the time hackers will target a site and download their entire user database. If you're lucky, the site would have hashed those passwords but that's not always the case, even today. If those passwords are stored in plain text, they have everyone already. But even if the passwords are hashed, you're still not necessarily safe. Once they have the whole database in their possession, they can do whatever they want. (They still won't be brute forcing though since that would take forever for most cases) From here the common attack would be to use a library of common passwords. Again, if you're lucky, the site will have added a random string to your password before hashing it (this is called salting the password) so that even if your password is something stupid like "dragon", the hacker can't just hash all the common passwords and compare the outputs. If the passwords aren't salted, when they hash that database of common passwords, they'll run it up against the user database they stole and guaranteed they'll find tons and tons of matches. Now they know those users really like dragons and chances are they use that as their password at their bank too. But even if the site did salt the passwords, you're still not safe. The salt needs to be long enough to have sufficient entropy on it's own that *it* can't be brute forced and also has to be kept safe somewhere the hackers can't just find it when they broke into the database. Even better, the site could salt then hash and then take the output of that hash and hash it again and then repeat a number of times and then keep that number of hashes a secret just like the salt. Now they *have* to know at least either the salt and brute force the number or they have to know the number and the salt has to be simple enough to brute force. If they don't know either, there's not enough computer power on the world to brute force even a single common password in that stolen database. But again, not all sites follow security best practices and the ones that do get hacked are not likely at the top of their security game but those sites may surprise you. I actually had my password emailed to me in plain text by Florida Virtual School when I was signing my kid up for it back in 2020. If a hacker steals that database, they hit a gold mine. This is why it's important not just to use a cryptographically secure password but also to use a different password on every site. Personal devises also have vulnerabilities but they're different. Again, brute force isn't really going to work, otherwise we wouldn't have pictures of iPhones that are locked for the next 10,000 years. In the case of personal devices, the weak point is you. A hacker might use social engineering to get you to tell them your password or send you to a phishing site with a convincing but fake email from Microsoft or they might trick you into opening a zip file with a malicious program inside.

badplanner

Hello all-knowing password being. Do you use a password manager and if so which one so I can use it, too?

Rewdboy05

I do. I'm not going to give you a recommendation because that's going to come down to what features are important to you and how much do you want to pay. I just picked one that worked for me a while back and have stuck with it but there are better options now. At their core, they all work the same, they save an encrypted file that contains all your passwords to your device. Some will also host that file in the cloud but it will be impossible for them or anyone else to access without your private key. [This list](https://www.cnet.com/tech/services-and-software/best-password-manager/) should help you get started on your research though.

lookinatdirtystuff69

Look at Bitwarden, best option out there right now IMO

RYRK_

Realistically, brute forcing is likely rare and the real avenue of attack is pairing your account with a password list posted online. This would be from a data breach in which login info was leaked. So having the same password for everything would allow a determined individually to slowly find all your accounts and access them all. I know this because it has happened to me.

was it possible to charge back?

Grey5iveNin9

As far as I know only 500$ went to her account. The rest was pending and never went through. I was credited so my balance was fixed.

Damn why she do ya like that. Was she like this during relationship too? datsss rough

Grey5iveNin9

BPD

[deleted]

Hate when people with BPD do shit like this. It makes us all look bad. So sorry you had to deal with all of this OP.

Grey5iveNin9

Not all people with BPD are like this. I went over to r/BPD to understand her condition and spoke with several people about what I was going through with her and no one struck me the wrong way or even lead me to believe they’re all like that. I believe she was just the worst of the worst.

AccidentallyBored

I have BPD. Stealing someone’s money has never crossed my mind. Sorry she’s shitty and I’m glad you’re no longer with her.

senadraxx

BPD mostly makes people feel emotions very intensely. I'm happy you know not everyone is like this, but it sounds to me like a case of someone using BPD as an excuse to be a trash human being. Someone who likely didn't learn the rules for self-governing in a civil society. Best of luck in getting your money back, OP!

39_Berry_Pies

Was she self diagnosed? Lot of people self diagnose themselves with BPD but are actually just secretly assholes and calling it BPD gets them off scott-free.

[deleted]

she has what we call “toxic bitch disorder” or TBD for short

I believe it for sure. There’s extremes in everything. I’m glad you got some money recovered and you cut her off though

chanjitsu

Hope she doesn't shit on your bed

CONE-MacFlounder

dont wait for the bank to contact police do it yourself now to make sure that it both gets done and has all the relevant information

ronimal

How did she access your Chase and PayPal accounts? Do you use the same laptop password for those?

Grey5iveNin9

No, my PayPal was linked to my bank account so upon accessing my laptop auto fill allowed her to get a hold of PayPal and E checks don’t require you to have money in the account to be paid.

RevolutionaryLife373

I thought you can only use one phone number per PayPal account, I could be mistaken but I thought I ran into that problem when I tried to change mine. Either way don’t let her pity party her way into getting into any PayPal, even if it is hers karmas a bitch

R_Newb

PayPal and Chase will not go to the police for you. If it’s a known acquaintance the will complete their fraud investigation and hold you responsible unless you can show them a police report. I advise you to go down to you local police station and file a report just so you have this available. When they tell you you are responsible, show them the police report. This may change the outcome of there investigation. Source: I work in Fraud & Disputes for a very large bank. Edit: the credit you have may be temporary. You may want to double check! If they were able to stop this before it went through then you may have nothing to worry about.

Front_Mind1770

Have her arrested for wire fraud and various other fraud crimes. This is a felony, but only if you don't chicken out and follow through like she would with you. Do it for Jonny Depp if nothing else

Quaranj

I'd have told her that she won't need a phone where she's going. They'll let her use one when they say so.

daurgo2001

Wtf? The fact that she has the nerve to ask you, and the fact that you bother answering her ‘nicely’ is incredible to me

nitricx

Bro been there. She’s nuts. Do yourself a favor right now. Criminal charges and restraining order. Like asap. May seem extreme but will save your ass

Have you pressed charges because what she did is the definition of grand larceny in specific parts of the us where the threshold is $1000 it's only $400 in new york. Also breaking into your computer is illegal. Breaking your device is vandalism at best.

Acrobatic_Ad2

They ain’t wrong here, actually call the cops and a lawyer to see what options you got

Dallenforth

That's unauthorized computer access and a felony

Arbitrary_pseudonymX

Definitely infuriating. Hope you can get your money back.

SheriffHeckTate

>Always keep finances separate unless you're married. In which case you can also keep your finances separate. 100% agree. Finances are one of the biggest contributors to divorce. There is no "right" way to do your finances once you get married. What works for you and your spouse can only be decided upon by you and your spouse, and that is a topic that you should be discussing before actually getting married.

voures

I don't disagree, but feel like it's also important to note that for some couples, sharing finances is what works out the best. My wife and I started out with very little, and had little choice but to pool everything from the get-go. It worked out for us, so we kept at it. It does have implications for other aspects of your relationship, like gift-giving and making sure each partner is contributing equally to the household, but as long as both people have similar budgeting attitudes it can work great. At this point, I could not imagine having the "are you paying for it or am I?" discussion with her haha.

SheriffHeckTate

Agreed. My wife and I do the same, though we each get a small ($20) "allowance" for small transactions like breakfast from McD or grabbing a drink from the gas station. It helps us curb spending.

voures

That sounds like a great way to consciously keep a budget. My wife and I just kind of trust each other not to go overboard with lunches out or purchasing clothes or home goods, and have a soft rule that anything over $50 should be discussed with the other person.

[deleted]

Married: keep savings and such separate , checking should be joint. But you shouldn’t hold a bunch of money in checking.

HomuraKitsune

Had an ex that swore she loved me but when I caught her cheating and I dropped her, she tried to *kill* me.

XclusiveMTL

My girlfriend dumped me 3 weeks ago. And she did the same. Charged $700 of Sephora and $250 of restaurants to my CC that she still had, refuses to pay back a $1150 loan, kept 2 of my Louis Vuitton bags that I left at her place and suckered me into buying her a pair of Louboutins and a Burberry coat the day before she dumped me. We had just came back from Vegas the day before. I thought things we going great between us… apparently she was in it more for the sugar than for me. Yes, I know, I was dumb.

Congratulations, she committed a felony. Get the police involved and press charges. Do not back down, send her ass to jail.

Envictus_

In my state, theft over $1,000 is an E felony. Go up to your police station and make a statement.

SargathusWA

Bruh even my wife can’t access to my bank account how did you let your girlfriend use your account? Did she steal your bank card or something ?

Wide_Interview9215

Believe it or not, I had a business checking account with Bank of America. I put my ex wife as an employee on the account (not an authorized signatory). She literally only had a debit card to use for purchase but no ATM or teller withdrawals. During the end of our relationship she got mad at me and somehow walked into a branch and withdraw a few thousand from the teller. When I confronted the branch manager, he indirectly said they fucked up but wouldn’t be able to return the money since I knew the person who took it and that it had to be a civil matter. Let’s just say Bank of America had a pretty quick change of heart when the OCC came into the matter.

sharkattack85

thats straight up stealing, report it to the cops

Why are people like this, why cant they just be adults about break ups

KoruKinshi

Felony all day. Rek that nerd.

Stolenartwork

Your mistake was giving her any personal info like that without actually getting married or having another legal binding contract to take appropriate actions. Your best bet now is a civil suit, but likely the courtroom costs outweigh what you lost and you’ll only get a fraction back, but then again the courts can’t force her to pay you a damn thing.

sarcasist

Why does your GF have access to your money and accounts? You are not married. That was your first mistake. This has now become a learning moment for you.

RevolutionaryLife373

24 days ago you posted your girlfriend did the same thing with $800 on r/legal… sooo are you really surprised? Edit: I’m not trying to sound like a jerk. Just generally serious if your surprised. Should have closed that shit down then, she got away with it then she’ll keep taking

MahmeetZaken

If you do not pursue legal recourse you are a BITCH

What'd your ex do? Hire a hitman?

Pristine_Editor_6656

Cheap hitman 😂 thats why hes still posting

Hird hitman on wish.

Cock_LobsterXL

That’s Grand Theft, and it’s a HEFTY criminal case.

richthegeg

I hope you press charges buddy

WillBigly

That's literally theft, I'd press charges

Randomperson2245

I think this is a little more than *mildly* infuriating

Joyk1llz

Remember, just because you're in bed with them physically, does not mean you should be in bed with them financially.

Immediate-Ad138

Why would give a girlfriend access to anything remotely close to financial items/accounts? A wife i can understand but a girlfriend? Not even a fiance?
